Pretty 'historic' film right here. I can't describe the hype prior to this coming out. Everyone had been wanting these two titans (Pacino and De Niro) to act opposite each other (the young 'Don' and Michael Corleone that never actually had any screen time together). By the time that diner scene came up where they were just simply two greats talking to each other, there wasn't a sound to be heard in the theatre. It was goosebumps.
“I had coffee with McCauley half an hour ago!” Gotta love how Pacino retroactively stated that Vincent was on coke the whole movie. Makes total sense and I can’t get enough of it
Heat made movie history for 2 scenes: 1st time the 2 stars were in the same scene and the heist shoot-out. Kudos for incl De Niro’s last resp in the coffee shop scene. Many reactors cut it out. But boo for completely cutting the heist scene. It’s the most realistic in any movie and is used by law enforcement in training to this day. It was also eerily similar to the real life North Hollywood shoot-out 2 yrs later.

When Neil mentions that there is someone else in his life despite being a loner, Vincent makes a mental note of it. So when he's at the hotel and sees Eady waiting in the car by herself, he hones in and catches Neil coming out.
Awesome film - De Niro was going down, and the only clue to that fact resides in the fact that they didn't call it "Heat" for nothing, lol. As a note of trivia, this is the 2nd time Michael Mann filmed this script, the first being a TV movie called L.A. Takedown, which is worth seeing if only to watch the 90 minute version that was shot in like, two or three weeks. Look up the trailer on you tube. It was clearly trying to be another Miami Vice sort of thing - a TV movie with the potential for a series spinoff - but the leads were much younger, and the extra time they took with this near-3-hour version, combined with the experience of Pacino and De Niro, clearly makes Heat the standout. But because they're so similar, I call L.A. Takedown "Pre-Heat". Its hard to find on video, but worth it to see the astonishing similarities. Its actually a good TV movie, although it lacks about an hour's worth of the character development, which can be good or bad, depending on your point of view. Also, in a case of life-imitating-art, the central shootout in this film directly inspired the lunatics involved in the North Hollywood Shootout 2 years later. It didn't take a slick, top-tier detective and his team to bring them down, but just plain old, uniformed cops swarming onto the scene before those nut jobs left the bank (probably got a little of help from SWAT). Luckily, only the perps were killed (I think), but they weren't nearly as well-prepared as their on-screen counterparts. Finally, if you liked this film, check out Den of Thieves with Gerrard Butler and O'Shea Jackson. It was heavily inspired by this film, and has a lot of commonalities in terms of style, and two teams of cops and robbers going head to head over a major heist. Check it out before they're finished making the sequel. But thanks again for the reaction/ review, and can't wait to see whatever's next!

This is definitely a Top 5 movie of mine. I probably have watched this movie once a year since ‘95. I really liked how the movie showed Neil and Vincent’s duality of commitment, tenacity and attention to detail to their chosen line of work. The coffee scene is cool to show that they both respect each other’s intelligence. Vincent was chasing shadows the whole movie and in the end he finally got one. 😉
