A couple of trivia about this movie, especially the shootout: - The director wasn't happy with the sound effects used for the scene. They tried different effects but it just didn't feel right for Michael Mann. So in the end they used the real sound they recorded when they filmed the scene. That's why you can hear the echoes. - Val Kilmer reload of his weapon was so good, an army (or marine, can't remember for sure right now) instructor used to show the scene to the recruits saying "if can't be as good as an actor at reloading a gun, get the fuck out of here"
It drives me crazy when in action movies they’ll physically take out an empty magazine and then reload. No, hit that button and let it fall to the ground. My instructor said no one cares about a $5 magazine, let it fall and get a new in as fast as possible
@@Tomhyde098 ya peoples love of and the success of john wick has hopefully shown hollywood that you should just put that shit in the movie and proper because the small hints of realism just make it so much more fun to watch.
@@Tomhyde098 It depends on the type of reload I think. Once you drop it in a fight, it's hard to say if you'll have time to go and pick it up off the ground again.
The scene were Vincent (Pacino) says "Cuz she's got a GREAT ASS!" was actually not written that way and Hank Azaria going "Jesus!" was genuine as he did not expect Pacino to go nuts.
Yea I remember Azaria talking about it in an interview... they had filmed the scene a couple of dozen times with the director repeatedly telling Pacino to use more energy and eventually he got frustrated and just exploded in that one take, with Azaria unprepared, and the director loved it, lol.
The major selling point of this film is that it was the first time Pacino and De Niro worked together after decades of being considered two of the greatest current actors (technically they were in Godfather II together, but of course were never in the same scene given the separate timelines). And it's actually pretty fitting that their first onscreen meeting be a pretty quiet scene where they simply talk about their lives, and discover that despite their completely opposite jobs they're very similar guys who kind of like each other. For years people went to that restaurant just for a chance of sitting in the same booth, but unfortunately it closed a few years ago.

That bank heist scene is just masterful and pure adrenaline. And when they meet in the restaurant, just iconic. I remember i was so upset at the end becouse i really wanted them both to survive. And i had forgotten about the all-star cast. I might just have to rewatch this. Next up: Leon (directors cut) .
@@BrandonLikesMovies Its absolutely fantastic. And you are spot on and the end about the realism. The sound of the guns and the lack of background score, just makes it so intense.
I don't know if anyone's pointed it out yet, but I love heat for the reasons you had mentioned, it feels very real and organic for one, and two the guns sound powerful. Throughout the whole movie instead of using generic gun sounds they recorded the audio of real weapons with blanks in the clip, that's why you really hear the booming of gunfire in the last bank robbery scene, they're surrounded by buildings so the sound can only really either go up or echo back at you.
I vividly recall seeing this film in the cinema in London. The shootout scene left the auditorium stunned. It was as if u we’re watching a real life shoot out and the Sounddesign and camera work punched home hard. You could have heard a pin drop after that scene and felt a collective tension in the air.
Became a big fan of Michael Mann with this movie. One of my favourite movies of all time. The shootout is of course legendary, but the character work and slow build up is just as important. This way the explosion of action and violence with the shootout feels that much more intense. Now, you have characters on both sides you care for and learned to know them as full humans instead of stereotype cardboard cutouts. Some say, the movie is to slow but I disagree. Lots of quit moments with high tension (the amazing diner scene with pacino and de niro for example) and lots of great character drama to flesh out the world and help us understand them and immerse ourselves in it. Movie wouldn't work as great without that. Not one single wasted second in this movie in my opinion.
I love that you brought up the sound of the big shootout scene! This is something I talk about with people when movies come up. It is easily one of the best audio scenes I've seen in any movie, full stop. Saving Private Ryan does this very well also. Glad you picked it up!

CASINO with De Niro, Sharon Stone, and Pesci also Directed by Scorsese INSOMNIA with Al Pacino and Robin Williams Directed by Christopher Nolan BOOGIE NIGHTS with Mark Wahlberg and Burt Reynolds Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson
Mann placed microphones around the shootout and captured the sound live. As far as I know this was revolutionary and is why the shootout sounds so real. Nothing dubbed in just live action audio.
Saw this in London when it first came out. That shootout sequence was awesome on the big screen. The ending with Pacino and De Niro holding each others hands while the haunting music played always gets to me. Great commentary and reaction by the way.
The Departed is fantastic, but for something a little different, and if Brandon is interested, he could try Infernal Affairs first instead, the Hong Kong film that The Departed is a remake of. (Just gotta deal with subtitles is all.)
@@tropicalcatdetective ABSOLUTELY! Brandon, you should definitely do that. I think Heat is one of the most overlooked great films ever. So much outstanding writing, acting, direction. And you mentioned it a couple of times, but I was always impressed not only with the shootout, but with the SOUND of the gunfire. Making them sound like the canons they really are. And a perfect final scene. It's just damned good. My own recommendation for you is another outstanding and often forgotten film, L.A. Confidential. And also a little known outlier called Lonestar. I've watched you watch enough movies so far to know you'd appreciate the shit out of both of them.
Loved heat but personally my favourite Movie by Mann is last of the Mohicans. Daniel day Lewis, Wes Studi and a great score. Would love to see a reaction to it if you haven't seen it before? Another day Lewis movie that doesn't get enough attention is in the name of the father.
The Last of the Mohicans is a truly excellent film that is underrated, complex and interesting from a historical perspective. Same with In the Name of the Father. Both will have you googling history after.
I was lucky enough to get a small part in this epic movie. They shot the bank scene in my Dad's bank in downtown LA (Fair East National Bank). We spent 2 weekends shooting those scenes and DeNiro and Kilmer were great to be around. I'll never forget.....love'd your reaction.
@@BrandonLikesMovies I didn't get to meet Michael Mann until the night of the premiere. The bank scenes were shot by First Assistant Director Michael Waxman. Michael Mann and his crew were outside on the main streets working on the shootout. I think it took them 3 weekends.
14:00 I haven't seen this movie but the way they close up on Al like that looks sooooo cool, and you're right, those gun sounds and the echos are perfection.
Yep, this movie was legendary back in the day. Great script, great lines, great performances by an all star cast bringing their A-game, and that shootout scene was amazing - not only was it impressively done from an action movie perspective but it seemed absolutely real, made you feel that this is exactly what it would be like if you were in the wrong place at the wrong time and got caught up in the middle of an actual bank heist gone wrong.
Dear god, Al Pacino. I was about to say that to me his role in "heat" was one of his best creations, next to the godfather, dog day afternoon, scent of a woman, serpico... and I realised the list could go on and on. You can't get better acting anywhere. Not possible. Every character is brilliantly played. Imagine being in this film and seeing it for the first time after its shot either at premier or a screening.
One of my favorite crime epics ever made! This film is 3 hours long. I remember watching this on VHS as 2 video set in 1996. I thought it was boring, but it's a great film. The shootout sequence was filmed in 2 weeks and it is one of the best. The ending is so sad but it was DeNiro's choice that he rather die than go back to prison and he wanted revenge against Pacino after losing 2 of his friends in the process. Michael Mann is a genius. And I thank him for that.

@@lfcaaron3080 oh wow, ya that definitely makes some scenes make more sense
One of the greatest movies of all time. The build up and the tension and then BOOM, that incredible shootout with no dialogue or music, just the realistic gun sounds. Everything about this movie felt so real.
Agreed, such well done depictions of gun fights
If you haven’t seen it Inglorious Bastards is an amazing movie and Christoph Waltz does a spectacular job as the main antagonist
Definitely want to check that one out!
garbage like all QT stuff it's plagarised
YES, I'm so happy you watched this! My favorite film of all time. I just found your channel last night and was hoping you'd watch this at some point. Love it!
It's a great movie! I'm glad you found the channel!
MOby was in every movie in the late 90s for like 6 years.
I like your reactions and commentary, found you few days ago, also very good equipment set up, nice audio, video and editing.
Thank you so much for the kind words!
Who's the loner?
He's your Dad in another movie 😂😂😂
I'm a millenial and I still had my jaw wide open at that epic street shootout scene. It's incredible how good it looks and sounds for 1995.
Reaction video‘s i‘d Love to See:
- Apocalypse now
- Interstellar
- Inception
- The Revenant
- The Hunger Games
- Shutter Island
- Joker
- The Lighthouse
What an experience this film was from cinematography, tone, acting, color, the scope and atmosphere I can go on and on about this masterpiece.
YES! So many good movies latetly. Whiplash and now Heat. One of the best and most underrated action movies. The story, the acting, the dialogeus and of course the amazing choregraph.
That bank heist/street shootout is one of the best action sequences I've ever seen
Well said!
love it man! such good stuff lately..
Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos!
You hit the nail on the head, action is only great if you care about the characters involved!
@Guthwulf, Couldn't agree more and couldn't have said it better.
I love that you brought up the sound of the big shootout scene! This is something I talk about with people when movies come up. It is easily one of the best audio scenes I've seen in any movie, full stop. Saving Private Ryan does this very well also. Glad you picked it up!
Oh man what a pleasant surprise! There are many great films from that era, here are just a few other greats which involves great Cast/Director/Writing, you should consider adding from the 90s to the list..
GOODFELLAS with De Niro, Pesci Directed by Scorsese..
PULP FICTION with Sam Jackson, John Travolta, Bruce Willis, Directed by Quentin Tarantino.
CASINO with De Niro, Sharon Stone, and Pesci also Directed by Scorsese
INSOMNIA with Al Pacino and Robin Williams Directed by Christopher Nolan
BOOGIE NIGHTS with Mark Wahlberg and Burt Reynolds Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson
Mann placed microphones around the shootout and captured the sound live. As far as I know this was revolutionary and is why the shootout sounds so real. Nothing dubbed in just live action audio.
Since 20 years I've been waiting to see an action scene that compares to the bank shootout in quality.
I am still waiting.
It's amazing! Have you seen Sicario? The shootouts aren't as long as Heat's but it has amazing gun sequences
@@BrandonLikesMovies No. It's still on my list.
Saw this in London when it first came out. That shootout sequence was awesome on the big screen. The ending with Pacino and De Niro holding each others hands while the haunting music played always gets to me. Great commentary and reaction by the way.
I really enjoy your channel Brandon! If you've not see "The Departed" I highly highly recommend it. Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, and Jack Nicholson.
I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos! Thank you for the recommendation!
The Departed is fantastic, but for something a little different, and if Brandon is interested, he could try Infernal Affairs first instead, the Hong Kong film that The Departed is a remake of. (Just gotta deal with subtitles is all.)
@@tropicalcatdetective Both are terrific.
@@tropicalcatdetective ABSOLUTELY! Brandon, you should definitely do that. Infernal Affairs and Infernal Affairs 2 are absolutely great - watch them in the original Cantonese with subs, you will thank us. There was also a 3, which kind of wraps the whole story up, but it was unnecessary and wasn't anywhere near as good as the first 2 so we can just pretend it doesn't exist.
Thanks for the great video. Love your channel! This is one of my all time favourite films and am glad to see younger people discovering it for the first time. I have a fond memory seeing it theatrically. Michael Mann will always be "the Man"
Andy McNab showed those guns how to be loud and angry
Definitely need to see that one!
@@BrandonLikesMovies I second that. Will not be disappointed. Heat is one of my favorite movies of all time, but Mohicans slightly edges it out.
Brandon needs to react to : There will be Blood, best Daniel Day Lewis film ever.
Really?? That's so awesome! What an incredible experience!
@@BrandonLikesMovies I didn't get to meet Michael Mann until the night of the premiere. The bank scenes were shot by First Assistant Director Michael Waxman. Michael Mann and his crew were outside on the main streets working on the shootout. I think it took them 3 weekends.
Recommendations:
Aliens (1986)
The Thing (1982)
The Wailing (2016 Korean Horror/Thriller)
Seen all 3, great movies! The Thing is one of my favorite horrors!
The Wailing, so good!
14:00 I haven't seen this movie but the way they close up on Al like that looks sooooo cool, and you're right, those gun sounds and the echos are perfection.
react to Goodfellas, or Casino (1995).
They're on my list!
Agreed!!
Another great choice of movie my friend!
Thank you!
DUDE. ONE OF MY TOP 3 FAVORITE 1990s FILMS. ALONG WITH "TRUE ROMANCE" & "GOODFELLAS". BRAVO ON THIS CHOICE MY FRIEND. BRAVO.
Hope you enjoyed the video! Credit to those who picked it in the Patreon poll
@@BrandonLikesMovies YEAH. I CANT PICK ANYTHING. IM A POOR ASS COUNTRY BOY. THANX BOSS
Donnie Brasco is really good

Great video sir! Joined patreon cuz your videos are definitely helping to keep my spirits up during this time. Keep it up!
Thank you so much for your support!!
Dear god, Al Pacino. I was about to say that to me his role in "heat" was one of his best creations, next to the godfather, dog day afternoon, scent of a woman, serpico... and I realised the list could go on and on. He could be one of the voices in Peppa Pig and I'd love it. Great video as always! And I really like going through the comment section, seeing that other people enjoy your work as well, you're building yourself a nice community here :)
Thank you so much, I'm very grateful there's so many wonderful people that engage here!
2:18 I dont know if you realized that the detective in the tan suit, Bosko, played by Ted Levine, is the same actor as Buffalo Bill in Silence Of The Lambs.
Wow, that was a lot of scrolling I just did to find out if someone had pointed this out yet.
Yep. And I SUSPECT that the reason there's no reply to this comment is because Brandon hadn't seen The Silence of the Lambs yet, and by the time he did, he'd forgotten this.
So. Brandon. Am I right? And if i am, now that you know that Buffalo Bill was in this movie, any thoughts?
@@kelsosemail Ted Levine is also in the original The Fast & The Furious in a similar cop role as one of Paul Walker's bosses. Every time I see him in a movie I think of him saying "was she a great big fat person?" to Jodie Foster.
You should give "The Town" a shot
Definitely on my list to check out
That’s a GREAT movie.
What makes the last shot more beautiful is that you have seen Pacino shoot Michael under pressure so he is focused and sharp is established. And in the final shootout you are already familiar with Pacino's accuracy under pressure.
Exactly my thoughts shared in my post analysis 🙂
Pls react to Goodfellas and Casino. De Niro on top form
I love, love, love, that you're doing this movie. In my top five definitely, no questions asked.
Love your channel btw.
Thank you so much! I'm happy you've been enjoying the videos!
I might be alone here but I'd love to see him watch Taxi Driver or You Were Never Really Here I think they would both be right up his ally
I've seen You Were Never Really Here but not Taxi Driver, I've been dying to see that one
@@BrandonLikesMovies well if you ever get around to Taxi Driver I'm sure we would all love to see It
Cool trivia, the sound crew that arranged the gun sounds is the same on Miami Vice remake, thats why both movies shootout scenes sound so great.
do the irishman (2019) next!!
A trifecta of recommendations: Locke (2013), Bronson (2008), Perfect Sense (2011). Not exactly unknown movies, but ones that I feel deserve more attention.
Love how serene you are in your reactions and analysis, and I know I'm not just in for a 'this is so trash' attitude. Very refreshing. Keep up the good work, my dude.
Thank you so much for the kind words, that means a lot! And appreciate the recommendations!
A Perfect World (1993) by Clint Eastwood with Kevin Costner is another good movie
I'll add it to my list!
Man, that movie is so good it hurts.
3:50 in and I'm already equally blown away by all the recognizable talent. (I've never senn this either) and I've already notice Sagat from Street Fighter and now Tone Loc?!?
I'm wastching this today.
Im jealous of you. What I would give to watch for the first time!! Turn the volume up!!!
Ya I couldn't believe the cast it had!
Not sure if you've seen Raging Bull or not yet but I'd highly recommend that to you. My favorite Scorsese-De Niro movie.
It's on my watch list 🙂
Great watching with you man! Very sincere, passionate reactions. Amazing choice of films.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Maybe I missed something, but how come you hadn't seen any of these movies growing up? Are you from another timeline?
Most of them (except a couple) came out before I was born or when I was a little kid, just never got around to watching many movies that released pre-2000 until the past few years
@@BrandonLikesMovies One of those times I forgot how old I am, I guess.
The BIFF timeline!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Next Week: Watching Jurassic Park for First Time!
(omg I would die)
@@Kivalt I know what u mean 🤗, like this guy does Chernobyl & I remember that happening , it's like one day u wake up and think WTF jeez did the years go
❗❗
The reason why the gunshots sound amazing is because Mann used the uncompressed audio caught on set instead of adding the sfx later like normal, which is amazing. Same for all his movies after Heat.
Genius move. Sounds so much better
@@BrandonLikesMovies it made for an amazing effect. More films should utilize this.
You ever watched Scent of a Woman? One of Al Pacino’s best performances
I need to see it!
Don’t forget Scarface and Carlito’s Way.
You can't get better acting anywhere. Not possible. Every character is brilliantly played. Imagine being in this film and seeing it for the first time after its shot either at premier or a screening.
Glad you liked the movie! Keep up with the GREAT content! And are you going to watch breaking bad? Because if so you something to look forward to!
Thank you! I'm glad I liked it as well 😁 and Breaking Bad reactions start next Thursday!
Brandon Likes Movies cant wait to see what you think of it! Might be the best show of all time! If not definetely one of them!😀
Did you notice one of Pacino's detectives is the actor who played Buffalo Bill in Lambs?
After that shoot out he was just never the same person 😂
You should do a movie reaction for "Speed"
Really want to see that one!
Bran, you are killing it during these crap times. Thoughtful and really well structured with your insights.
Thank you so much!! That really means a lot!
Watch the movie Ronin with Robert DeNiero. Best driving scenes in a movie
Definitely want to check that one out!
One of my favorite action movies. The car chases are white-knuckle anxiety. Great criminal characters that aren't all the same.
Sat on the front row for "Ronin" and it was dizzying. That movie IS underrated.
The Duo of Pacino And De Niro is always a win.👌👌
Truth!
Hey Brandon, have you seen Leon the Professional? One of my favorites. Would love for you to react to it!
I second this, but I would also love to suggest the longer cut, not the US theatrical one.
I have! Fantastic movie
wonderful reaction brandon!! my new favorite channel!!
I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos!
React to Michael Mann's 'Manhunter'.
It's on my watch list 🙂
"What have we got...What have we GOT !!!"
- Al Pacino, 1995
If you haven’t seen Scarface I’d love to see that video
It's on my watch list!
This Movie Blew You away, that's exactly what it's meant to do. My favorite of all time. You have good taste Young Man. I'm subscribing.
Your comments on Mann’s visceral style are on point. He’s just a master; Thief, Manhunter, Collateral, The Insider and even Ali (if you’re into biopics) are awesome. Combines macho coolness and a romance for both sides of the law.
Definitely need to see more of his work
