This is my review for the newly released console version of Sword & Fairy - Together Forever. The story is based on Chinese mythology and its actually the 7th mainline game in the Chinese Paladin Series. However, its the first time one of these games has been localised for the Western markets. Its sort of like a sister series to the Xuan Yuan Sword games, one of which I reviewed on this channel, link below. The game was played on a PS5 but its also available on PS4 and PC.

Seems like a cool Xianxia game. I love the aesthetics of that genre, and it's so underappreciated here in the west. Chinese fantasy can just look so rad and unique in its own way.
Absolutely agree. Some of the visuals in this game are genuinely stunning but its more than the raw graphical fidelity. As you mentioned, its the design, the music the aesthetics. All in all, a great game in my opinion. Thanks very much for watching, its appreciated!👍🏻
I love it, although i am not into the ancient chinaese or japanese theme persay. I dont hate it its just not my jam usually. But sometimes a rpg comes out with those themes and it hits, this on HITS! ITs got ALOT of problems but its so charming, i can forgive it. I love it. I imagine 8 is gonna be incredible! Id LOVE for this dev to make another RPG in this engine with this art style, but a different theme.
I also picked this up after being impressed with Xuan Yuan Sword 7, this publisher deserves some more spotlight. Hope they make some money from this port to the west so they keep these games coming.

I really enjoyed this review, out of the 4 I just watched, this is my favorite, it’s clear you have actual experience in this type of genre, so you touched on a lot of things others completely ignored. I love the Dynasty ad nSamurai games and I also love Naraka and that mobile game, Dynasty Legends 2, so when I saw this was released on PS5 on the 2nd I wanted it and just purchased it because of your review, thank you.

It was my GOTY last year when it came out on pc. Classic game...
This one has changed much in series.
RPG elements are simplified a lot.
There were tons of equipments and items to use in previous game.
In its old turn-based gameplay, it takes calculation and planning to win the fights. Summary of each fight tells you about level-up.
Back then, sidequests didn’t have any note or instruction. Players had to talk to each NPC to find it first, then conclude what needs to be done according to dialogues. Now things just got a lot easier.
That's all very true. I did do quite a bit of research into the series before I played it but I didn't really mention any of it due to this being the first Western localisation. I completely understand your points and while I've never actually played those older games, I do like this game quite a lot. Thanks a lot for your comment and for watching my video.👍🏻

@@ConsolesOnlyGaming another fact, this game was harshly treated by chinese community, by comparing to AAA titles or "already year 2021 and this still looks like ps2 graphics" flooded in comments (3dm/gamersky/ali123) or forums. Whem china has been release tons of tons of mobile/mmo games, this studio is one of the 2 companies still releasing single rpg game, which is why the community is the reason single rpg couldn't gain huge improvements, investors and budgets, till black myth wukong came out (and this still under developing after 5 years).
BTW, FS7 developed under 6 years, which 1.67m per year, imaging seeing how low is the budget for UE4 game from producer/director.
I'm familiar with the franchise as I grew up watching the Chinese live adaptation of Chinese Paladin 1. Never played any of the games but just downloaded SF7 on PS5. As a fan of Chinese Wu/Xian Xia media, I'm pretty excited to get into this game.

I ordered the normal physical release from PlayAsia. It is the Asia or Japan editions, but they do include English.

Beautiful game! 6h now and I'm in love! Brings back when i was little and played RPG! Hopefully there will be more Chinese RPg in the future

This game is a big contender for GOTY. The storyline is ABSOLUTELY incredible and the soundtrack is absolutely spot on.. specially that last battle. I look forward to the next S&F. A solid 8/10
I absolutely have to agree with you. Such a great game that almost no ones knows or cares about (comparatively). I enjoyed pretty much every moment of it and really, an issues it has are SO minor. As you said, its solid. I didn't know this until a few days ago but Sword & Fairy 6 is actually on PSN for download. I had no idea so I may check it out at some point. Some viewers have told me that while it doesn't look as good, the gameplay and story are much better. Might be worth considering? Either way, thanks very much for watching and for your comments.😊👍🏻

Yea, I expect that a LOT of people won't have ever heard of it. I think its really good and absolutely worth playing if you like action RPG's. I think this'll be like the other game I reviewed, Xuan Yuan Sword 7. Forever niche but pretty much the definition of a hidden gem lol. Definitely. Its a great game in virtually every way, as far as my opinion goes. Its absolutely going to be overlooked though and that's a bit of a shame. Also, I noticed that Sword & Fairy 6 was on sale for a very cheap price, I think I'll pick it up as a lot of people have told its good. Some people prefer it to the game in this review actually so I think its worth a look.

I just got the game. So far I do love it. the art is beautiful now I never played the other games. But I heard this one was a safe one to jump into. And I have to say so far I agree! A lot of reading!

Graphics feel like they could be a lot better for a modern title, but this seems like a running issue. Hopefully we get an elden ring visual quality xianxia game soon

This game looks solid. I like the things you said about it. I can feel that feeling of wanting to play it. As you said a game doesn't need to rival another game for it to be good, sometimes games are there own thing and are liked because of it.
Absolutely. If you've got other games that you're interested in playing, like GOW Ragnarok, I think its fine to go ahead and play that first. However, this is a great game that'll be waiting for people to play when they're ready. If you like action RPGs, I think this is definitely worth a go, at least to me. Cheers as always my friend!👍🏻

@@ConsolesOnlyGaming I played 3 hours so far. My first impressions of it are, it's a really good game with great graphics. Like you said the character models are awesome. I have seen some bad textures but that's nothing to complain about and doesn't ruin the game. What does ruin it is my controller deciding that today it will have extreme left stick drift, because of that the game became unplayable and now I have to wait until tomorrow some time for the new one to arrive. Remember kids cheap controllers bring disappointment because they aren't made well. That's the 2nd time this has happend.
Well I'm glad you're enjoying it but that's absolutely typical about the controller! Things always break when you need them the most or cant afford a new one lol. I've been using the DualSense on PS5 so I've not had any issues but to be fair, they are bludy expensive so they better work! lol. Again though, its awesome that you're enjoying it. As I said to a few other people, if you expect it to be a little less polished when compared to triple A games and make a few allowances (the odd bad texture), I think its a rather great overall. The cutscenes are pretty epic as well!
I keep seeing this game around, good to see that it's actually pretty interesting but fun action rpg game. Might have to take a look when I'm starving for some action rpg, but I'm more into a turn-based fever right now.
Yea, it seems to be one of those games that slips under the radar but gains popularity later on through word of mouth. Its definitely worth a look when you're in the mood for it.👍🏻

I don't regret my purchase! The game is fun and although the opening has a lot of exposition once the characters are all together the gameplay amps up and the moments between them are cute!
Does it have a good amount of gameplay or is it 90% story, and is the combat good and challenging?
Can you recommend games similar to this one? With strong emphasis on story, with similar relaxing atmosphere? I really like wuxia films and games and so rare to find good ones.
That's a very good question. As you said, they are very rare indeed, at least in the West. The only 2 I really know of are this one and Xuan Yuan Sword 7. I know there's a lot more out there but I've not played them myself and you'd need to be able to read/ understand Chinese to properly enjoy them. Sorry I can't be more helpful😢. Can the spirits only be used with Yue, and do they only affect her skill tree?
Yep, only Yue can. She's the last member of the Mingshu Sect that actually has that ability. The characters don't really have a skill tree. Skills/ spells for Yue become available after levelling up Yue and/or her spirits. Then you can slot/equip the ones you want to use. The Spirit I showed in the video has 2 buffs which are HP and Thunder. If you put the points into HP, Yue will have more HP and if you put them into Thunder, I believe it increases the damage of your lightning magic, if I remember correctly. The other characters gain new skills by levelling up. I hope that helps! Thanks very much for watching my review!😊

What is the fps for the PS4? 30fps or 60fps?
I didn't play the PS4 version and I wasn't given any official information regarding that versions performance BUT, from what I understand its 30fps on PS4 with some graphical downgrades.
30 or 60 fps, they're both solid standard frames. 60+ is better yes, but I personally don't care as long as the game is good.

The biggest issue i have is the translation and VA work in english. Its just bad, flat out bad. But its also CHARMING as hell! I hope they either fix up those things in this, or atleast make 8 with better VA and eng translation. My other prob is the rpg upgrade mechanics, its weird. You could level up 20 times and not know because the game doesnt tell you. And the upgrade windos and ui are just confusing. But those are minor probs, i freakin love this game i cant wait for 8 one day

I wouldn't be surprised if people didn't know about this game, that's one thing Japan does better at, and i don't mean there games are better. im talking about advertising, i don't recall seeing or hearing anything about this game. the game also came out exclusively on PC, that can be another raason. Console is where everything is known.
not that PC isn't, but people don't exclude PC from Console anymore.

Hmmm, that's a good question. Well firstly, which console do you have available? As far as my tastes go, If you have a PS5 I would probably go for Sword & Fairy. I think I enjoyed it slightly more than Xuan Yuan, plus it looks much better. If you only have a PS4, then it becomes a bit more difficult. Both games are really impressive for what they are but I still think I'd go for Sword & Fairy first. Thing is though, I'd pick up whichever one you don't buy straight afterwards because I like them both, a lot. I hope that helps in some way! Thanks for watching!

Is this game digital only
Currently yes. Originally, it was supposed to get a physical release on the same day as the digital release. However, they have now delayed the physical release until early 2023. However, they've also created a Premium Edition and a Collectors Edition which I guess is to sort of "make up" for the delay. I don't like it when they delay physical versions like this but what can you do? Thanks for watching!👍🏻
Im really excited about this one. I love Wuxia stories and chinese stuff. I just honestly hope It is better than Xuan Yuan Sword 7.... That one really disappointed me with its cluncky combat, terrible localization making the plot and dialogues hard to grasp and horrible fps drops.
This should be right up your alley then dude! Are you going to be playing on PS4 or PS5? As I said in the video, I was on PS5 and it felt a lot better during combat (as long as you lock on) and it ran at a near solid 4K 60fps. On PS4, I'm afraid I don't know how the performance is. I noticed a very small amount of grammar mistakes but I was able to follow the story with no issue. Let me know, if you pick it up, I'd love to know what you think of it. @@ConsolesOnlyGaming 3 hours into the game and so far I am loving it. The only problem I have is I bought the game for PS4 and the graphics are nothing like in your video. I know you play on PS5 but on the PS4 apart from cutscenes the game looks terrible :( It looks like it runs on 720p(even though it set on 1080 in PS4 system), everything has rough edges, shadows are from PS2 graphics, Filtering is almost nonexistant, faces are almost unrecognizable from afar and from close-up straigh up ugly. The game runs great with few bump along the road (nothing gamebraking or unplayable) but the graphics are really just really really bad on PS4 (at least for me). I feel like I have something in the option somewhere badly selected but in game setting in video settings tab I can only set brightness. So I dont know.
Oh man, that's disappointing to hear. I didn't have access to the PS4 version so I had no idea of how it would look. When I get review codes from publishers, I can only choose 1 and I usually go for PS5 as that's likely going to be the best place to play it but still, such a shame. I notice that you said the game runs well at least? I suppose that's something positive right? Besides the visual fidelity, how are you liking the game?

30 + hours of Cutscenes or unskippable conversations with about 10 hours of actual game play. More like a interactive move.
Just like Asterigos Curse of the Stars, the Sword and Fairy games are Taiwanese, not Chinese, that would be like calling a Canadian game an American game, there's a difference regardless of politics and regardless ppl want to admit it or not

DO NOT BUY this game !!! I bought it on playstation last week for my PS 4 pro. I played it for about 2 hours, and then it started to crash over and over again. It was the latest version too. The game was already crashing on the 1 boss fight, and then it started to run super slow! Sometimes, the main character or the main monster disappeared while the game was still running!! I contacted playstation, and I couldn't even get a partial refund for this particular broken product. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!! Also, the game talked so much, and it was so boring.
Wow! That sounds really bad! I did my review on the PS5 version of the game and I didnt have any of those issues at all. No crashes, bugs or glitches that I can remember. I've never played the PS4 version of the game and I'm really sorry that you've had those problems. If its that bad, Sony should have absolutely refunded you because that's unacceptable.

I finally called them, and the support didn't care or maybe he didn't fully understand the refund policy. He stated that "No refund for ALL DOWNLOADED games no matter what the reason" Then he told me to contact the software company to fix my problem!! This is completely irresponsible!! DO NOT BUY THIS GAME IF YOU HAVE A PS 4. YOu will be sorry!!
It's so bad, I don't understand the positive reviews at all..
Graphics are nice (don't look like 4k to me at all tho on PS5), however the story is cliche, combat is clunky, enemies are easy and so you barely need any strategy, equipment doesn't have any visual impact and being forced to read subtitles due to missing localization takes away from the Immersion.
I regret buying it, you play like 5 minutes just to wait out cutscenes for 10-15.
Well, I'm sorry that you didn't like it and if you think its bad then that's fine. I mean, name a game that everyone universally likes? Its just not possible lol. Not everyone is going to like this game (or any game for that matter) but personally, I loved it.
I think it looks really nice, I enjoyed the story, the combat felt pretty fun to me, the equipment thing doesn't bother me and the subtitles not being there is pretty common for Chinese and Japanese games. I do prefer English dubs but they aren't very common due to the cost.
Also, I've never really understood the problem with "cliché". I understand what it means but pretty much everything has been done and rarely is anything a brand new idea at this point. Its like saying "I enjoy eating burgers but I've had so many that its cliché and I don't like them anymore because of it."
Anyway, if you don't like it, I'm not going to say you're wrong because we're all different, we all see things and experience things in different ways. Still, even though we disagree on this game, I do appreciate you taking the time to watch my video. Cheers.👍🏻😊

Yea man, I think that's fair. I've played a lot of action RPGs and character action games in my time so its hard to say exactly what I'm used to at this point lol. Some example could be all the souls games, DMC, Bayonetta, Warriors/Musou games, Tales of Arise the list goes on. As I said in the video, the combat in sword and fairy does feel a bit off unless you lock on. For me, that felt fine but again, we're all different. I do agree on the voice acting. I always prefer English dubs but as you're probably aware, a lot of companies don't want to pay for it so, I guess it is what it is. I mean, if an Anime has an English dub, that's what I watch. If it doesn't, I can still watch it but I definitely prefer the dub.
Once again, I'm sorry that the game wasn't what you were looking for but this kinda thing happens from time to time. I've had some games on pre-order for months, looking forward to them, getting hyped and then I sit down to play it and I just didn't like it. Sucks, but what can you do? lol

Just switched to Ghost Thushima and the difference was day and night just because of English voice over.
I don't want to read everything as if it's an Anime with subtitles or a visual novel..
When I watch animes I concentrate on watching and reading subs is fine but I don't have to play at the same time as I do here.
So even though subtitles kill the Immersion here I'll still finish the game because otherwise it's a pretty nice AA Game.
Agreed. I use the English dub for Ghost of Tsushima as well. As you said, it allows you to play and listen which is better than playing and trying to read things at the same time lol. Well, despite the issues, I hope the game grows on you a bit as you playthrough it. Cheers again my friend.👍🏻

Yeah....this game looks like ass. The localization is TERRIBLE as well. Pretty typical of amateur Chinese developers.
Well, if that's how you feel then sure. I mean, not everyone is going to like it and that's fine. Personally, I think it looks really good in terms of graphical fidelity and I didn't have any issues with the translations outside of a few minor mistakes. I really enjoyed it but of you don't like the look of it, then fair enough. Even though we disagree, I appreciate you taking the time to watch my review.👍🏻
