The whole series is pretty much unknown in the West, but it was supposedly a big hit in Japan, starting from PCE-CD in particular. My fav game in the series is The 4th Apocalypse on the Saturn/PSP, since it takes place in the wackiest version of the US imaginable. They're poking fun at the US in more ways than one, from mecha fights in Hollywood, through songs about being fat and eating sweets, to a singer who enchants people with her pop songs to do her bidding. Makes sense though, since the series is to a large degree based on cultural misconceptions. Also, Red Company created another famous game series in Japan, Sakura Wars - yet again fairly unpopular in the West.

The game is notoriously difficult to emulate, from what I've seen- specifically in the sound department. I downloaded and patched it myself and tested it in both VBA and No$GBA. No$GBA emulated the music properly, but only after a certain point- basically past the title screen and the intro, then complete silence barring sound effects. Meanwhile, VBA didn't emulate the sound correctly at all.

I'm trying to think if there are *any* Final Fantasy games that can make that claim. I want to say FFVIII and FFIX are extremely good about it, with only a few enemies that are palette swaps. There were even decent reasons for doing it, like it's different ranks of soldier from the same nation, or a friendly version of an existing monster type that you can rarely find.
@@0Fyrebrand0 PS1 era games are fine. There was less space back then. The thing is they even keep doing it in FFXV for the PS4 ^^ (this is not unique to them of course but is always welcomed to see a RPG with unique enemies)
Funny how the dialogue is what stuck out for you with Golden Sun. For me, it's the puzzles! Golden Sun is an excellent puzzle game wearing a jrpg costume.
I really like how the combat is shown from behind the characters like in the Phantasy Star series. I wish more RPGs did that instead of the typical side view fights. Too bad the enemies are not animated as well.
If anyone is interested.... Best way to get through the long grind encounters?! Snes9x on Wii (maybe switch and wii-u also) , the right analog stick fast forwards game play. It's like a fast battle button used in recent remakes like FF XII. This has made so many snes rpgs more tolerable years later like Breath of Fire 1 and Lufia. Try it out. Thanks for the review as usual.
I remember playing the fighting arcade game a lot when I was a kid, i didn't know there was RPG games when I play it again on MAME and search for it moves sets I found it was RPG games first and fighting game was spin-off :D
What in the world would we do without you? On one hand I appreciate finding out about games that I WANT to play but have never heard of, not to mention that nice feeling of comraderie that goes with having similar experiences with certain titles... but on the OTHER hand I hate it because I'm an adult now and can't just spend my days playing games like I used to. Thanks so much for this, had no clue this game existed and I am really interested in games like these, I got nostalgia feelings looking at this right away like FF6, Chrono Trigger and Phantasy Star.
Love your content!
Duuude. This sounds like the rpg ive been lookingfor. I have a soft spot for over the top SNES graphics
@02:00
I thought for sure you would make a Bangles reference...
I’m slightly disappointed.
Great looking game thanks for sharing
And on the cover art we have Jesse, James, Ash, and baby Misty.
Those older siblings right, there are something unique. Lol just open the gates of hell
No pallete swap enemies? Damn, even modern Final Fantasy games can't make that claim!
Golden Sun is an excellent puzzle game wearing a jrpg costume.
omg, they finally finished the translation!
I really like how the combat is shown from behind the characters like in the Phantasy Star series. I wish more RPGs did that instead of the typical side view fights.
Too bad the enemies are not animated as well.
The background and menu art has simliarties to the early shining force series. I wonder if camelot or any of the same people are behind it
If anyone is interested....
This is way better than live a live
My granda had a saying: it ain't no matter how thick or long, but the time it stays strong.
You must have had a very frank relationship with your grandmother.
I remember playing the fighting arcade game a lot when I was a kid, i didn't know there was RPG games
when I play it again on MAME and search for it moves sets I found it was RPG games first and fighting game was spin-off :D
Is that Golden Sun reference a hint???
Golden Sun series blushing 😯😀✌
What in the world would we do without you? On one hand I appreciate finding out about games that I WANT to play but have never heard of, not to mention that nice feeling of comraderie that goes with having similar experiences with certain titles... but on the OTHER hand I hate it because I'm an adult now and can't just spend my days playing games like I used to. Unless I win the lottery 🤔...
