The Ultimate Tarantula Sling Guide - Part 1

  • PLEASE READ!!!!
It has been brought to my attention that Tarantulas Bristol has a TERRIBLE reputation. PLEASE DO NOT BUY FROM HERE. Thank you to all the folks from the UK who chimed in to let me know!
Kamel Spiders is no longer open.
PART 2 COMING TOMORROW (will include Feeding, Hydration, Maintenance, Temps, and Molting)!!!!
    1. What size sling (1:40)
    2. Where to buy (5:20)
    3. Enclosures (13:25)
    4. Receiving and unpacking (25:50)
Okay, this was originally supposed to be one video, but after working on it for days, it ballooned to over an hour. I'm therefore going to post it in two parts. Unfortunately, the first part doesn't have a lot of the juicy stuff, and covers choosing the sling, ordering online, setting up enclosures, and unpacking the slings. The idea was to take someone new to the hobby through the entire process of buying, housing, and caring for a sling.
A word about the new intro/theme. I listened to dozens of songs before settling on this one. Selecting a theme can be tricky, so although some folks might not love it, I'm hoping it doesn't turn anyone off (it was almost a metal song. :) ).

Great series Tom, thanks very much. One thing though, Myself and thousands of other keepers in the UK would strongly disagree with your friends recommendation of tarantulas Bristol. When I saw their web page pop up, I thought it was going to be another warning like Backwater. Recommending new keepers to use tB is like recommending they get an obt as a first t.

Hi, Haggis. Thanks so much for the heads up on Tarantulas Bristol. I definitely don't want to send someone to a place with a bad reputation. I'll put a note in the video, and I'm also pinning your comment. Thanks again!

Agree, I read awful things about them. They were shipping T’s when no other seller was because of the weather being so cold. So I researched them and read a few horror stories. I’ve never used them but was certainly put off by the experiences of others.

This has probably been mentioned, but a word of caution when using tape to cover a hole: tape over BOTH sides of the hole. You don't want the possibility of your T getting stuck in the tape.

Don't apologize on length of video. Slings terrify me. They are so delicate. I got a 1inch and even she/he looks like I could easily hurt it. These are great videos!!!

Thanks, Diva! When I originally took notes on how to put this video together, I was thinking it was going to be about 30 minutes total. Whoops! haha They terrified me at first, too. I had to be convinced by Jamie from Jamie's Tarantulas to give them a try. I'm glad I did, because it was incredibly rewarding. Now, I almost exclusively by slings when I get a new species. Thanks so much!

Just ordered my first sling from Fear Not Tarantulas, they’re shipping it on Monday. Super easy process to set up the shipment arrangements and so far I have no doubt that they will take great care to get the sling to me in perfect condition. So glad I saw some good people recommending them because they seem like the best breeder/dealer in the states right now.

    Hey Tom!
I just want to thank you for the hours upon hours of information that you have provided me over the past few weeks! Both your Podcast and your many youtube videos (along with many others) have me thoroughly hooked on Tarantulas and am proud to say that my first Grammostola Pulchra (3/4-1in) will be shipped out tomorrow and will arrive Wednesday am. I have already ordered a Sling enclosure from Jamie's Tarantulas and have that all set up. I also ordered feeders, and a feeder set up, and a Juvenile enclosure in preparation for the T's growth. I took the morning off work Wednesday so I could immediately pick up my T on arrival. I am proud to say that thanks to you and many others I feel very prepared and confident going into this hobby, that being said I am sure my confidence will be shaken in the first week or two.
I can happily say that I listened closely to your advice and feel like I have gained so much from your experience.
Thank you for all you do for this hobby, breaking down every step and spending SOOO MUCH time helping the community.
I cannot tell you how much it means to me to see someone loving any animals as much as I do, and to think it started with arachnophobia.
    Much love

Hey Tom, unfortunately my sling has passed. I am pretty shaken by this. It was not in a death curl. It wasn’t moving much three days ago but I thought it might be getting ready to molt so I left it alone. Two days ago it didn’t respond as it usually did by running to its pre made hole when I shifted the container to check on it. Just standing on top of the leaf in its enclosure. Yesterday I took the lid off and gently stroked its legs and had no response. No death curl, just no movement or response. It had a water dish at all times. A layer of dry substrate and a layer of damp substrate. It never did any digging and it did a lot of climbing in the last few days before it stopped moving. The tarantula came from FearNot the enclosure/contents came from Jamie’sT’s. I don’t want to bother you with this. I don’t want to take up a ton of your time. I’m just hesitant now to try again. I felt so confident and it was shattered. Thanks for listening. I hope this finds you well.
      Much love
      Braeden

    • @braedeneufemia1byyby
      @braedeneufemia1byyby 4 роки тому

After much research, thinking, and listening to your podcasts over again (number 14 stuck in my mind). I think one problem was I ordered a Jamie’s enclosure because I liked them better not because I thought it would be better for the T. I could have done something wrong with the set up... Maybe I made the enclosure too cluttered or complicated. (I left out most of the sphagnum moss and I still never saw the T explore the whole enclosure) Maybe my starter burrow was not deep/dark enough. When I try again I will order a complete set from FearNot with their pre made enclosure. Hopefully having a pre made set up with instructions will minimize user error. Im sure it’s possible that the T passed from natural causes but I want to correct any error in my husbandry no matter how small. Again I understand that this is just a hobby for you, you have a life and a job and lots of other subscribers but I appreciate all the work you do and have done. Being able to go back and re listen to all your podcasts re read your husbandry guides and check your enclosures on your UA-cam videos has really helped me feel well informed. With your help I will break into this hobby successfully. I will be taking some time to do some deep diving on G. Pulchra before ordering again.
      Thanks again!
      Much love
      Braeden

Hi Tom I'm a big fan from out here in Cali, I just wanted to compliment this guide because it's so well put together. I picked up my first T a Chilean Rose at the age of 13 and it's been one of the best and most fun decisions I've made, I'm 20 now. I had old knowledge of their care and I've updated my knowledge so much thanks to your channel. Thanks to this guide I pulled the trigger on a Mexican Redknee sling about 6 months ago and he's been doing great! Muahaha I have a Gooty Sapphire😱 on the way courtesy of Fear Not Tarantulas and a freebie Nicaraguan Curly Hair;) and yes I got plenty of deli cups, cork bark, moss, plants, tongs, and water bottles at hand. Many thanks

When I first got heavy into the hobby, I actually had to be convinced to gets slings. I was the impatient sort who didn't want to wait years for them to grow, and I was terrified that I would screw up. Information on raising them was difficult to come by. I'm REALLY glad I was convinced, though, as it's so much more rewarding. My first two slings are now full-grown adults that I'm proud to have raised. Thanks so much!

    • @ViridisLeo
      @ViridisLeo 7 років тому

Yeah, I'm impatient as well which is definitely one of the downsides to me. I love the A. Chalcodes and wanted it for my first T, for example, but they take SO LONG to grow from slings. I agree, although I've never had one I assume it to be much more rewarding.

This is a FANTASTIC video! I actually appreciate the length of it, as it includes so much detailed information. This is my third time watching. I am very new to the hobby, and first-hand experienced that ordering slings online scenario, where my enclosures were way too large. PLUS, was sent an unexpected freebie... that was NOT recommended for beginners. I was so scared and nearly squashed it!😳 Also, when unboxing/re-housing in a tub, remember to block drain plug. It seems obvious, but when you're nervous, or just excited, simple things can be overlooked...to include doing in a sink...don't forget that open overflow hole in back of the sink. I tape it up. Thanks, Tom! I've learned SO much from you!😊

I'm a responsible person and have been researching care and techniques every day for the past few weeks so I am confident in making these choices. Tom Moran again, probably not recommended, but they have 1" to 1 1/4" p. Metallica slings currently. the smithi slings are only 1/3" to 1/2" so I feel they might be too fragile for someone just getting in to the hobby. I'll look elsewhere for slings that are a little more established and that I would feel confident in my ability to care for.

Just thought I would share how I do my ventilation for really small slings is to wrap a piece of copper wire around the end of the soldering tip, and use the hot copper wire to make the holes.

Great job Tom! I needed to see this and hear great information about slings care, to what size is best to buy to your simple set up for in closures. As you might know. I'm just a novice in 'this business. I would have never guess in a million years on buying a Tarantula yet alone an exotic animal of any sorts. I didn't know about stuff like this existed period until about a year ago when I took my son to the local library around October 2016 for what they called a spooky spider show lol! A local pet store owner was doing a road and teaching show for the kiddos and I thought that would great for me and my son to do and we did. After that show my son whom is 6yrs old by the way, asked me 2 days later (daddy can I have a spider) I was shell shocked at first and really didn't know what to say or do. So 2 weeks later I found the pet store here where I live and long story short, got my son his very first exotic animal. Later on as I found myself getting very involved with this purchase we made and trying to get as much info from the pet store owner and doing UA-cam research. I have found myself hooked on T's. Now my addiction has turned into 3 Tarantulas for myself and wanting more lmao! Go figure right. But I just want to say that your page on UA-cam has given valuable information that I need or trying to seek out and hence the question I do ask you from time to time and I really appreciate your advice and experience you provide for me but also your viewers. So on that note I think I have rambled way to long but that's my story for you to know and where I'm coming from and thanks again for your hospitality that you provide. Thanks Tom and keep those videos coming

Hey, Micheal! Thanks so much! I love hearing how folks get into the hobby, as it really does attract people from all walks of life. I find it amazing how many people I talk to first got hooked because their kids were interested. One guy I chat with had ZERO interest in tarantulas until his daughter saw a presentation on them at school and wanted one. He bought one for her...then one for himself. Soon, she had three and he had 30. hahaha. It an INCREDIBLY addictive hobby. I had kept a G. porteri (rose hair) for years before deciding to hop online one day to see what other species were available. I was blown away, and I remember turning to my wife and saying, "Seriously, I'm probably going to end up with 30 of these things." haha. 150 tarantulas later...My blog started out as a bit of a joke (hence why I picked the goofy name "Tom's Big Spiders") and became more serious as I started posting up more observations. I teach as a profession, so I think I just inherently enjoy passing info along and helping people out when I can. So, if you ever have questions, ask away! Thanks again!

Just purchased an L. parayhbana 1" sling from Kelly Swift / Swift Inverts, he's super friendly over email. My T came in early this morning, packed very well, lots of insulation and a heating pad. he also included about 10- 14 tiny lil mill worms labeled "just in case." I'm so glad he did because I couldn't set up my Dubia colony in time, plus the baby crickets at Petsmart are still too big to feed at the moment. Swift Inverts: 10/10 would recommend :)

I will be buying my first few Ts from SwiftInverts. His selection is Fantastic and his prices are nuts. Plus he throws in a sling for 100 dollar+ orders. I'll post in a week or two how it goes. Thanks everyone!

Got a little P. Canceredes and a curly hair sling as a freebie. The Canceredes is bigger than I expected. The curly hair is tiny, probably half the size of the Canceredes.

This is actually good timing for me to find this, and fantastic video! I’m nabbing a Hapalopus sp. Colombia off of tarantula Canada later this month for my birthday, but they’re going to be a 1/2” so I’ve been a bit nervous about taking care of them (I’m hoping it’s female but my ma is hoping it’s male lol)
I’ve had bad arachnophobia my whole life minus tarantulas (funnily enough it’s because they’re large and bulky), but I’ve only just recently convinced my parents to let one in the house (probably because I’m leaving not too long from now). My dream is to own in the future is a T. seladonia but I’m working my way up :)

very great guide! now if I can find time to literally watch all your vids! hahaha
esp liked the parts about other solid dealers. I returned to the hobby after many years and it's great you bring up a couple I had pleasant memories just getting started with. Top on my list is Kelly Swift. Very patient and answers all ?'s fast and he gives info you didn't remember to ask about haha. I'll try out Jamie's on your recommendation. heard everything great about them

Amazing video! Great tips. I’d stick tape on the inside as well. So their little feet don’t get stuck to the sticky exposed side in the hole.

Hey Tom! New to the T hobby, and would like to get my first sling. Euathlus sp red, really excited. I fell in love with the animal as soon as I saw it. I want to say thank you so much for all the information and I will definitely use your site in the future. Also a question, where can I get cork bark a sphagnum moss?
    From Canada!

Hi, Jackie! Thanks so much! Unfortunately, I'm not sure where to get the cork bark and sphagnum moss in Canada. Have you tried Amazon? They carry both here in the US. :)
