Went to school at what was usually called Bell School, but was officially Great Horton Primary School. As far as I can remember the gravestones were still in the Chapel grounds at that time 1959/60 and were only moved when Al Murad acquired the building. The chapel itself was actually used as the school hall as I believe the original hall in the school building had been converted into the library. I also seem to remember at least one or two classrooms being in there as the school population had grown. This also meant that an annex was established at the old Primitive Methodist church, just below Arctic Parade, and one of the final years classes did their lessons there. This was usually the preserve of Miss Moore, who seemed to be the only teacher to teach there. The school closed with the reorganisation of Bradford education system when what was Great Horton Secondary Modern on Cross Lane became the First school, and the school buildings became a care home. The original entrance was up the driveway now gated off, and the land to the right was Great Horton Tidefield
A wall made of headstones is a sign that there was once a burial ground and the headstones have been moved because they were getting in the way of the new plans for the area. The burials would be left untouched and people will end up walking over the graves. It's unforgivable. A final resting place should be preserved and treated with respect.
Used to visit this chapel when it was Al-murad in the early 90s. Used to see the grave stones and never thought about the bodies. I am so sorry if I unwittingly drove over former Bradfordians graves.
I went to Bell School 1965 to 1969. We used to play on the gravestones in the graveyard at the front of the chapel. The graveyard was not looked after and some of the graves and headstones were damaged and in poor condition. The chapel was used as the school hall then but it seemed common knowledge that the building was in poor condition and was not going to be used for much longer. I remember some of the gravestones being used to make a path somewhere round the chapel but that may have been just after I left. So sad to see the building and general area looking like this. Great video.
Great video, I grew up on Beldon Road in the 90s and Bell School behind this was abandoned and was very spooky indeed! Not sure if I had a vivid imagination as a child but I’m certain that I once saw bones in the green at the front of the Bell Chapel/Al Murad car park when some digging was taking place. I still think about that & I think the adults thought I was telling tales! 😮
Opposite to the entrance to Ladyhill Park in Allerton there is a small chapel with land to the side that was a cemetery . It was levelled and remains were taken out in 1973 when i was working from the park. I believe the people who cleared the remains included Les Kellett the wrestler. Unfortunately they were less than thorough , several tombs were left and kids got into the holes throwing remains around, including in the Park !! Our foreman in the park Keith Elgie , had several of us doing an early morning sweep to see if any bones were thrown around and a proper company was brought in to properly clear the land, All the gravestones were put around the perimeter wall in the same way as these , but, given the experience at this site,i wouldnt be surprised if a few graves weren't missed!!!!
I remember it in the early 60's. That car park wasn't there then to my recollection. What a shame the place has been left in such terrible condition. I do hope someone saves it.
Very interesting , in Keighley on the beginning of North Dean Rd ( just off west lane ) there is a little old cemetery , didn't even know it was there until a couple of months back
Thanks for the interesting video. I thought Southfield Lane rang a bell (no pun intended); My Great Grandfather was born at 10 Knights Fold, just off Southfield Lane.
Its not the first time Bradford council has passed planing on a graveyard. Go check out near the Delf in Eccleshill where the built houses and there's a chapel just like that one behind a pub at the top of the bank near by the graveyard.
@@BradfordThroughTheLens if I can remember rightly (it's been a long time since I was in Bradford) Between the Bank and prospect at you can see an old building that was a quacker church. If you do an about turn on the other side of the road you will see the home that were built on half of the old graveyard.
I once read of a similar story. Some years back, a builder won a contract (I won't disclose the location,) to level some land ready for some new houses to be built. Work started, and within two weeks the company owner was called about some bodies that had been unearthed. The police and other authorities were contacted, when he got to the site. There were seven bodies, in coffins, but all unmarked. It was discovered that an old church had been demolished there, and that the ground had been deconsecrated. The church said that the other bodies were exhumed, and relocated. But the question that has never been answered, is why were those seven unmarked coffins left and reburied? Dark secrets?
Maybe no permission was obtained when the car park was made, and that's why there is no record of where the bodies were moved to. Terrible to think that all the bodies may now be laying under the car park in unconsecrated ground. Shame about the state of the building.......perhaps very conveniently set on fire
If I remember correctly there's the site of the old school behind it, it's a nursing home now but I remember knocking around in the old derelict school before the nursing home was built, must be 30 years ago now that
I attended Bell school from I think it was 1967 to 1971 which was classed as junior school. After that I went to gt Horton junior high which I had also attended prior to that when it was an infant school. The chapel we used as a sports hall and I had two accidents in there. The first was when I was forced to do pe in bare feet as I had genuinely forgotten my plimsols. Jumping off the apparatus at one point I landed on pointed toes and propmply broke my right big toe which stuck out at an angle of 45 degrees. Later on another day we were running into the hall via the entrance tunnel when someone tripped me up and I went forward and my throat took the impact of one of the pew type benches stored there. I thought I was going to die as I couldn't breathe. I managed to survive though. The building was also used for the Bell Raven cubs and scouts which I was a member of later on after "defecting" from the Weslyians 😂

Thanks for sharing your detailed memories.
It really does paint a picture .

💯
Listed building in Bradford that's had a fire. Depressingly familiar. Lots of land to redevelop.
It's definitely a common theme. Thanks for your comment 👍🏼

I am sure there will be a simple explanation somewhere. 😊 Thanks

Amazing and fascinating history to this chapel! So pleased it is now 'on record' for posterity in case it has no future.
Thanks for the heads up 😉

I think it is beyond saving, too much damage.
This excellent video raises more questions than answers!

Absolutely, there are many familiar stories like this.
Dead bodies are just numbers to some people. It's sad, really 😞
Probably due to cost bunch of stingy
The first grave you looked at says “the wife of Jonathan Holdsworth” - that’s me 😳
🤔 Just pretend you didn't see it.
Are u shittin me Hayley? 😱

Surely the clock was there ! ? Its on the drawing and you wouldnt spend money 220 years ago on a false clockface .
Where is this exactly
Southfield Lane
To be exact, opposite One Love Caribbean Takeaway , Southfield Lane.
Welcome to Bradford its half way to hell on its own handcart.
😎
they should restore the grave yard it's a shame the dead should be respected too
It was my dad that put the graves there
That's amazing !
Hey, can we have a chat about the graves. You will probably know more than most if your dad use to be a part of the burials.
Very 8nteres
