Darren, another outstanding watch.... The image at 7:00 would be a perfect Postcard or even blowup, frame and hang on a wall. Again, the King of photo-fades, they sure bring the story to life. Darren your name should be "Darren the Historian." mike
My bet is the iron anchors at the start are held in with lead. They would drill a hole drop in the anchor hen pour molten lead in the hole to fill any gaps, Great video 2x👍
I live up on crookfarm caravan park, baildon moor. such a beautiful setting with great views of both urban bradford but also the countryside and the Glen, great to be based around so much positive history! I never actually realised they were these rides once up on the glen, thought it was just the tram way! Amazing to think that these rides and other attractions around salts mill were really there only entertainment
Played on them myself as a kid. I used to live in Eldwick, just in view on the aerial shots and used to help out with the Glen Tramway. The old dodgem cars were across the path from the top tramway station, where the new house is. It’s only a few years since that was demolished.
Bloody enjoying this series Darren. Love how you found the steel and holes in the rocks .then pic fade the scratch on the rock to show your spot on. Please keep this sort of content coming.
Watching this video and seeing my dog running towards you and seeing my kids playing on a rope swing in the background is mental. My wife said she remembers a man walking round the woods stopping looking round and walking off
Just catching up on all your videos about the lost attraction of Shipley Glen. I had no idea that all these used to be there - amazing! I've been on the tramway but sadly I can't really remember much about it. Love your work - keep it up!
There were definitely other Aerial Flights at Southport, Crystal Palace, Cardiff, and Munich, and claims of a few more too, including Berlin and Vienna. Stansfield himself went off to look for gold in Alaska in 1898 and wasn't heard from again after that.
Great videos. We used to love going to Shipley Glen as a family. Was lucky enough to go on the Aerial Glide a few times, never realised how extensive the attractions were until now.
Heyas Darren, I was blissfully unaware of the toboggan run and Ariel flight history when I was with my brother and cousins using the Glen rock faces as a playground. I remember the trees didnt seem as grown as they do now and the water way into the dam was always on show. I eventually bought a small caravan at Dobrudden(?) Farm overlooking the Glen. Back then it was a couple fields with small tourer type caravans and a cafe in the farmhouse. All pleasant memories. Cheers DougT
Great video Darren. Really enjoyed these. As a direct result of the Part 1 video a couple of weeks ago I took a walk from East Morton, on the canal to Roberts Park in Saltaire and had a little ride on the tram, for the first time in probably 30-35 years. Brought back a few memories from being a kid. I had no knowledge of the rides mentioned in this one, so will definitely be heading back to the locations on this video for a mooch around!
Darren you’re a star ⭐️ All that you do is fabulous mate. Especially love the photo fades with the soothing, poignant background music. Heavenly 🙏 Please continue your good cause ❤
Excellent stuff, I lived just over the hill near Baildon Golf Club and during the 60’s and 70’s Shipley Glen was my playground ( well one of them ). Often wondered about the steel and square holes in the rocks. Thanks !!
I enjoyed the video Darren, great photofades as usual. Great to see the stay bolts in the rocks. The ones at the top are forged wrought iron for sure. Cheers!
Top quality video - with great investigations to track down where things were. It would be good to see some of the local museums make use of your videos too.
Really liked this series! Brilliant that you could find where these two rides were and that something was still there after all these years! There was something similar at Devils Dyke near Brighton with a Victorian funicular and a similar aerial flight, well worth a visit as believe there are remains there too. Views up there are also stunning.
It's interesting that you profile this, because your last video was the funicular railway. Had this toboggan run been built with a funicular railway (where the two cars balance each other) the accident likely would never have happened.
I'm loving this mini series, so informative and the photo fades are amazing, learning stuff about Shipley Glen I didnt know about, keep up the awesome work 🙂
You said that it was the Glen that got you into the love of history. For me it was thre school Easter holidays in Northumberland and I never looked back.
Fascinating as always, Darren: brains as well as brown eyes, that enjoy searching for the detail! Thank goodness we live in a land where history abounds, eh?
have a recci at sunny vale pleasure gardens,Long, long gone near hipperholme,,it was the Alton towers of the day up to the50-s,nothing there of course, used to be a country club, and a stock car circuit latterly, but in my early childhood was a great theme park of the day,can you imagine that nr. halifax today
@@edwinturner1149 I used to go there as a kid to see Go Kart racing and later the stock cars. A few things remained when I first went from some of the rides and most of the frame of one ride was still there, either dodgems or a waltzer. There were riding stables not far away where we played in one of the open coaches from the miniature railway, I always wondered where that came from and it was years after when I found out. I think Darren is going to go there one day He mentioned the place on another video. There was a little video on here years ago showing boats on one of the lakes, could still be there
12:20 Top banana! Your commitment to detail and the pretty much forensic exploration of the sites you visit is shown magnificently here when you describe the possibly hundred year old trees as "new saplings." If ever a man was lost in his train of thought... Brilliant!
I’ve been going there for 30 odd years and never knew the rides you have mentioned existed or seen the works associated. I thought the rides where just a few swings and an Helter Skelter. Well researched Darren.
5:38 So the attraction relied on the novelty of flying through the air in a wagon with a couple of your mates and nothing else? It didn't go from somewhere of interest to somewhere else of interest, it would appear. Such innocent times and how different to our blasé "been there done that" attitude today.
It would be great to have a new one there! Another great spot would be from White Wells above Ilkley, just on the other side of the moor. Great detective work there, learned something new and at 76 years old that ain’t easy !
Probably wrought iron Darren as it works well in tension unlike cast iron which would have been too brittle for the purpose although it works sell in compression. The holes would have been drilled, the anchor pins inserted and then the space filled with molten lead to secure it once the lead had cooled and set.
Ok, how freaky was that? At 8m46 there's comparison pictures between the old & current rollercoaster location, with that rock having a person in almost the same position on both photos?
Hi the hole was rock drilled and the iron fixing placed in to the hole followed by molten lead as to grout the fixing within the hole, as we can see a very effective method indeed
The two benches are a good guide to where the start of the cable car was, as you captured on your video. Great work fading in the before and after shots too. Did you read the peoples names and dates that are carved into the rocks? Some of them go back years.
Hi,great vidio ,used to go there when was a kid ,think was a amusement arcade at the top, have just subscribed,am one of walk on the wild side, moderaters ,watched the blackpool blogg with you and Stephen
Been so many years since i used to visit here can't have been older than 10 so 24 years ago!
Absolutely brilliant series of Shipley love your before and after photo's
Everyday is a school day. Thanks Darren a very good series again.
The visions of the Victorian era are so much better than todays. What went wrong.?
Greed, in a word. The top 1% want more and this is what happens.

Thanks
Definitely agree a modern version would be a massive hit
Brilliant, used to explore the glen as a kid in the 1970’s totally oblivious to all this lol
I must have been a weird kid lol
My bet is the iron anchors at the start are held in with lead. They would drill a hole drop in the anchor hen pour molten lead in the hole to fill any gaps, Great video 2x👍
Dankeschön Darren das ich wieder schauen durfte. Ist eine schöne Serie voller schöner Abenteuer 👍😀
eye opening and absorbing as always
Agree with you, getting a modern toboggan run there would be brilliant, and more than a nod to the past…
Nice one Darren, shame about the accident.
With me being local in Saltaire absolutely loved your Shipley series Darren.
Just amazing. What a fab explore. Fading in and out as usual so poignant. Excellent video. Thank you Darren.

Very well done , it took me over 3 years to tie the old 'Circular Railway up with a picture
Great videos. We used to love going to Shipley Glen as a family. Was lucky enough to go on the Aerial Glide a few times, never realised how extensive the attractions were until now.

If you get over. Let me know I'll show you round.
Great video as always, looks a nice place for a rough walk shall we say rugged lol thanks for all the detail 😊

Good eye.........
Yeah I did notice lol
Yes it would be great to get a new toboggan in that area , great work as always Darren 🏆
Thanks 👍
I enjoyed the video thank you
Very interesting piece of detective work. Have blockbuster movies and video games reduced the demand for such attractions, do you think?
Needs a warning with that metal
Great find
Cant they do a temp coaster or alpine slide
Great location for dry skiing
i think those metal anchor points must have been lead filled to stop corrosion.
Hi the hole was rock drilled and the iron fixing placed in to the hole followed by molten lead as to grout the fixing within the hole, as we can see a very effective method indeed

Very nice
Superb!
Thanks a lot!
Another great video.
Darren, do you recce these places or find as you explore? Either way fantastic content 👍👍
A bit of research. The rest is what I find.
Your research is outstanding and what you actually find is impressive, keep up the good work.

At 3 15 those anchor bolts would have been secured into the rock by pouring molten lead down the hole in and around the bolt.
Did you notice all the carved + dated graffiti in the rocks ? one i remember is dated around the turn of the 20th century @AdventureMe :)
Yes I saw those
My play ground as a teen
They must of taken the rails instead of leaving them.. or people stole them afterwards
bring back the toboggan
Too right
What was that animal 10 min in running around
It was a spaniel
Third?????
Yeah the one before this and the tramway.
First!
