- Even if you do not have the financial ability to invest in expensive dress shoes, but you do have shoes which are towards the lower end of the market, such as shoes with inferior leather, or plastic/rubber soles which have been cemented to the upper, it is possible to make them look like a million dollars with a little knowledge and work.
In this practical tutorial video, we will take you on a journey to improvement with a pair of inexpensive shoes from the manufacturer John White.
Using quality shoe-care products, this tutorial will demonstrate how to upgrade those cheap shoes to great looking footwear that will help create and maintain a stylish first impression for the wearer.

You're definitely a good friend. I've had friends ask me to polish their shoes and I do it for some. The others deride me about my "expensive taste" in clothes and shoes. Usually for clothes my retort is, it fits.
I find the shoe renovation/transformation process quite cathartic. I also know that my friend will now seek out more appropriate footwear, as I have opened his eyes to what can be achieved on a very modest budget.
Same here, in both topics ;).
I mostly wear medium priced (for that field) made-to-measure suits because they *fit* ;).
Shoe-wise I'm a orthopaedic shoemaker by trade, essentially a bespoke cobbler with medicine knowledge and use for his Latin ;), so I tend to buy cheap shoes and use them as test beds for all kinds of things in my free time at work, like recently buying a cheap Oxford brogue and ripping and grinding off essentially everything besides the top leather and then reconstructed it, essentially from leather leftovers into a full leather construction with a layered heel and finishing it off with an investment of JR soles.
Cost me the soles and the couple of quid for the base and ended up looking expensive.
So I completely get the shoe "beautifying" notion but, nutcase that I am, turn it up to eleven ;).
Best regards
Raoul G. Kunz
Thank you enjoyed every bit of that great information
I think that you’re quite right in what you say in another of your videos - a Chap on a budget is far better off buying used premium shoes from eBay than new shoes of poor quality such as these…..
Thanks for the tip!
Very nice work on these shoes. Nice history lesson also about John White Shoes.
Excellence.
What a finish.!
Shoe trees help.
Great history of the shoe as well.
From this video, I’ve learned that cream polish has a bit more pigment in it. I just assumed it was for nourishing dried shoes and that was it. I have the mirror wax, but in neutral so I’m going to get some more of it in black to do my new Loake Burford brown boots. I love the darker toe cap on brown shoes and boots. They really stand out. I also have a pair of Ebay bought used Loake brown shoes which are in ‘as new’ condition. EBay is a great way to get better quality shoes for a bit less money. Thanks again, Ash for this valuable chap info.
Great video as always, Ash. Can I ask who you go to to get shoes repaired/ reheeled?
Fantastic and very informative video!
Glad it was helpful!
I took a look at them on the website and they thereabouts look like Loake type of quality! You generally get what you pay for with Northampton shoes unlike those shoe companies bought out by fashion brands. Nice presentation!
Thanks for the feedback - my advice would be to look elsewhere for shoes other than John White's. They fall well short of the upper tier of Loake (1880). But as you say, pay small - get small!
Thank you for making this video!
I'll try also using Saphir products this time than replying on Kiwi's.
The after looks great man.
Very good!
Thanks!
What a difference! I'm going to buy Saphir products and get my leather shoes in top condition. Thank you for the links! Ciao!
Only problem is getting Saphir products. I’m looking up a local shoe shop to hopefully pick up some quality products..
Fabulous job. I am faced with something similar with my son-n-law's shoes, though these are even cheaper, but I have hopes. Love your videos.
You can do it!
And I did it! They came down from Massachusetts to visit us in Virginia and brought the shoes. Harry could not believe what I did. They were incredibly cheap black captoes, never polished and sitting in the closet for years. I did the whole process starting with Renovateur and ending with a mirror shine on the toe cap. I also got him a pair of Allen Edmonds which I polished to a mirror shine (whole process). And I gave him a shoe care kit with Saphir products and all the other parts. I love it!
Great stuff! Do you use the same brush for all levels and also with different polish colours!
No, a brush for each colour - 1 for black, 1 for brown.
Well done dear chap. I wonder if a mirror shine would work well with my black brogues...
I have nice pair of black brogues that are finished to a nice mirror shine and they look exquisite. It elevates them to a whole new stratosphere of use.
8:12 But when you want to pronounce it the French way, please keep in mind that the French diphthong "eu" in "rénovateur" is an [ö] phonem!
That means that the French "eu" is pronounced like the "e" in "her", the "i" in "first" or the "u" in "church".
Stressing/elongating the last syllable is a good start already; you just have to change the sound of the vowel/diphthong. 🙂
Cant understand why you dont remowe the laces before starting the work
Florsheim is another brand of men's shoes with a sterling heritage that fell victim to globalization and the trend of men wearing more and more casual shoes rather than dress shoes.
My father had a pair of Florsheim's made of buffalo hide, which looked beautiful, and wore like iron. -He had them resoled at least once, and possibly twice, and wore them just about daily.
I still have a couple of pairs of Florsheim "Imperials" which I bought in the mid-1980s, when they were still a quality brand. -Top grain leather, goodyear welted construction, and absolutely solid.
Unfortunately, my feet seem to have spread out a bit over the course of the last forty years, and although my left foot still fits comfortably in these shoes, my right foot is pinched to the point of discomfort.
I've gone from wearing a size 12 E to a size 12 EEE. -I might be able to get away with 12 EE in some brands and styles, but as we all know, if the shoes aren't comfortable, and wearable, it doesn't matter how good they look, or how well they are constructed.
It's beautiful! I wish men would dress better and wore more interesting shoes. It is so often jeans and tennis shoes, and it is so boring. Those shoes are art. Very nice informative video. Thank you.
I totally agree!
Magician ;)
Interesting you recommend saphir products Are their any UK based alternatives?
In my many years of trying the many brands on offer, I have never found anything that can compare to Saphir. The French have the edge on this occasion.
I have 2 pairs of combat boots that I wear for work. A 3rd pair of combat boots I wear as dress boots, $50
Nothing wrong with combat boots - I've worn them for work for decades. A reassuringly robust item of footwear.
@@TheChapsGuide The one pair that I wear with my going out attire has a seamless, one piece upper and gets a better shine.
The ones I wear to work, I just give a brush shine to keep my supervisors quiet.
Unrelated to the subject Ash, I just wondered what watch you were wearing?
That’s a Tudor Black Bay GMT.
I want that pocket square!
Its one of my faves, although I have absolutely no idea where I got it from!
Can I pay you to mirror shine my light tan whole cut Oxfords please?
Let me know pls
Shoe porn at its finest :P And its impossible to overstate the advantages of the Saphir range of shoecare kit.
I totally agree - Saphir makes this a pleasurable journey to undertake - hence my willingness to assist a friend in opening his eyes to the world of shoe possibility.
Why didn’t you remove the laces
Wow a german brush 😄
When she sees the shoes, she'll want to marry him all over again. :-)
My husband buys $400.00 shoes with a rubber sole
I get MTM all leather GY welt shoes made in Pakistan ( leather soles) for $110 usd and then $30 to ship. These shoe companies selling made in Asia shoes with rubber cemented soles for the same price or more are trash!
