I used to work for chili’s a few years back. They don’t make the chili fresh. It’s honestly packaged from a bag, and all they do is add it to a pot to heat it up.
@@snowflakehunterhere did you get this information from? I used to work for Wendy’s when I was in high school. It’s just packaged chili that’s heated up. They do add water to stretch it. No old hamburgers included.
The only hindrance is that it’s 4.99. I get that it’s a famous brand chili, but half of 10 bucks for one can definitely puts it on a luxury scale of foods to buy rather than something to keep you goin for a week.
When I worked at Wendy's we used meat that was left on grill too long and set aside until needed for Chile. It was panned with water and heated until moist and then we chopped it with pan lid. We used veggies that were measured and frozen until used and beans were washed before adding and a pack of seasoning was added as well as water. Used large pot to cook until done and placed in serving pans as needed. As it sat in heating bin it would thicken so water was added to get it consistent.
This is correct. At one point, they had a chili pack with the beans and seasoning all in one. I used the Blodgett oven potato rack and chopped the meat up (it is a stainless steel rack and does a better job in the long pan). You can also tell that people are half chopping the meat as you get large pieces of hamburger. There are three reasons that the chili can be thinner. 1. When the chili is freshly made, it is always thinner, just like spaghetti sauce, needed additional time to thicken up. 2. When people combine residual old with fresh chili. 3. When people mention adding water, they are not adding water to stretch the chili because you can only hold it for so long, it is being added in most cases because they are not paying attention to the heat pan, and then it starts to dry out and you no longer have a water bath and the chili starts to dry out and if you wait to long it will burn and stick in spots. So, the water is used to help reconstitute the chili into something that looks like chili and not succotash. If I knew it was burnt in spots, I would pull the pan and scoop all from the top so as not to have to throw it all out. When he mentioned the sodium level, it is listed as high on the store version, and the reason is because of the seasoning of the meat. Also, you can tell which stores partially boiled meat before chopping it up because the ones that follow the actual steps, the partially boiling and draining, remove a larger portion of the sodium. Also, for the people who feel it is icky, Kentucky Fried Chicken does the same thing to make the pot pies, as they partially boil the chicken to help remove the skin and shred it. The same was true when Popeyes did their chicken etouffee: boil, desking, shred, combine with their gravy, boil/cook, and then serve over rice.
This is an excellent review and comparison! One of the things I love about wendys chili is that slow burn you get with a cup. Good to know the can has a bit of a difference. I've been making my own copycat Wendy's Chili which also have that little bit of burn like the restaurant. I have bought extras ones to bring home with me and freeze as well. But I bought a can of Wendy's yesterday at Walmart because I wanted to see if it has that can taste like all other canned chili. If I like the can Chili it will be convenient for me when I haven't made any and don't want to go to the restaurant. So I will be visiting this video again to give my opinion.
Whenever I made a run to Wendy's for some sort of combo, my father would want only some chili and nothing else, even when I was buying. I wish I liked Skyline, but I cant get past the "pumpkin spice" flavor profile.
I've bought the canned Wendy's chili and really don't care for it I was expecting it to be the same but no...I love the restaurant chili best. I do know from eating Wendys chili at different locations the chili is made just a bit different but still love it anyway. I always get an order of French fries to eat with my chili. Bye from Ohio🌹
PRICE UPDATE: The price now on the large size chili is $4.64 (tax incl.) at my local Wendy's restaurant. The canned Wendy's chili is $4.42. Bottom line I'm buying the canned version for stocking my pantry and convenience to have on hand.
Way back in the late 90's I based my chili on Wendy's chili. I buy the Bush's Pinto and Kidney beans already in chili sauce. Then I dice a onion and a green bell pepper throw them in with 1/2 lb of ground beef while it's cooking. Put all the beans in a large soup pot with some diced tomato's then add the beef onion and bell pepper. Then I add 16 ounces of water plus a small can of tomato sauce and a 1/2 teaspoon of chili powder and mix well. Then bring it too a boil then reduce the heat to a simmer stirring every 5-10 minutes for 45 minutes. Then let it cool for 1 minute and serve.😋
I was not aware that Wendy’s had a can chili. I add cheese, sour cream and onions to the restaurant one and my Hormel chili at home gets cheese and sour cream. I will have to look for this. Thanks for another great review! Have a terrific weekend!
Regardless of taste and quality, I’m surprised it would be cheaper to purchase fresh from the restaurant. I think I’d always choose fresh over canned especially if it’s cheaper. Liked this different format video😁👍🏻. Thanks for the review Kevin.
The reason it is cheaper at the restaurant is due to the nature of licensing. Chili straight from Wendy's and made by Wendy's is cheaper because only Wendy's is involved in the process. The canned Wendy's chili is made by ConAgra through a licensing agreement between the two companies. Now, both of these companies want to make a profit on the same product. Hence the higher price. And the sad thing is, it is not even Wendy's chili, nor is it Wendy's recipe. They just made an agreement to use the Wendy's name and likeness.
@@bklondon75deliciousnesswit64It really was interesting. I was surprised. I actually learned real facts on the internet. Best comment I have looked at today. That is what UA-cam comments should be.
Someone who once worked at Wendy's told me that the meat in the chili was repurposed from the unsold hamburger patties from the previous day. For my part im OK with that. I like their chili.
I haven't tried that one but the steak and shake chili in a can is awesome for canned chili much better than hormel or armour which tastes like the can.
Damn Ken you had me so confused when at first your said the $4.42 Wendy Chili 15oz can was less expensive then the $3.49 restaurant 15oz container of hot Chili but then you corrected yourself to say the Can cost more. I hope you know the weight of any food purchased in stores does not include the container weight. Any hoot, I love Wendys chili and use to have it 2-3 times a week when I was younger and looking to save on food prices when it was just .99 cents.
Great review!!! I used to love Wendy’s chili- it’s like the kind our family in Ohio makes. Nobody in Texas eats that kind of chili, so it’s been a great treat throughout the years. However, three years ago it made me deathly ill twice and I’ll never eat it again. 😂
Didn't even know they had it in stores and saw it in the chilli aisle for $4.99. I needed to know how it compared to the restaurant and saw your video, nice review it was in depth.
What I do to bring the canned chili to store level is add water, MSG, and a little acidity from lime juice and vinegar. The canned chili lacks the acidity the restaurant chili has. I also add 3/4 TSP of cayenne & 1/4 TSP chili flakes. Tiny amount of black pepper (don’t overdo this). A little cilantro. This further improves it. Heat the canned chili on a stove, too; you can heat up and mix the chili better this way. Turned out great.
Wendy's Chili is my favorite so i'm glad i watched this so i have an idea what the can version tastes like and it sounds like ot is probably very close to tasting like the restaurant versin so i will be buying the can and trying it!
first let me say i love Wendy's chili so its naturally a good bet for me to try the can . i bought some at Walmart and it was very good not exactly like the store but still very good lots of real meat not like many chili brands were is fake meat
Have to say I am a Wendy's chili fan They make the restaurant in store chili with hamburger mistakes and bag and freeze. You read where employees say don't eat it. The problem I have too is you get different version depending on who makes it and many times it is not up to temp. I will try th he store chili to see if it is compatable in taste. Thanks for the review. t
I suspect Wendy's spent years and $$$ trying to make a canned chili close to their own. I like Hormel with beans adding extra chili powder, so who am I to judge? In a pinch, it all comes down to cost and to what I have access.
I get the Wal mart brand Chili and add a can of Rotel to it,and some Mexene,Cumin and Black pepper. Top it with Grated Cheddar , minced onions , Tabasco and some Fritos Corn Chips. All set.
I like the restaurant version better then anyone else's in fast food. The canned version good also. If you'd like more kick just put a teaspoon of your favorite pepper sauce in it or to taste. If you'd like additional sweetness my recommendation is add a half tablespoon of Karo syrup to it rather then sugar, then ending up with it to sweet.
Skyline is in a totally different category. It’s more of a sauce to be put on pasta, or they sell a thicker version for hot dog chili. Bad comparison to mention it when testing chili con carne.
I just got through eating half a can of Wendy's Chili and it so much better than those other brands it isn't even funny. It don't taste like it came out of a can either. However I have some issues with it which probably gives it that orange look. The juice is thickened with Corn Starch, Tapioca Starch and Xanthan Gum. The canned version is not as good as the restaurant version. However I will give it 4 stars out of 5. I don't think any chili lover will be disappointed in this Chili and if someone set a bowl of it in front of me without knowing that it came out of a can I wouldn't be able to tell. But I can tell about the flavor because it is just a little odd tasting.
I just can't do canned chili. Even for chili dogs, I make my own. I have certain seasonings and add-ins that canned can't even touch. I would take it to work in Pyrex bowls as Ziploc containers stain. Thank you Kevin.
What do I do when I go in Wendy’s. I tell them stirred up first. Then pull it up from the bottom. And put it in the cup. That way you get more product than a juice
I haven’t had Wendy’s chili since the 80’s and to be honest, I don’t remember it being that good? Might have to give it a try it again to see if my opinion has changed. I make a couple different homemade chili recipes (one in the crockpot and one on the stove) so I’m kind of thinking a mass market brand like this will come off as a tad bland - guess we’ll see………🤔
I bought some, tried it and thought it tasted absolutely nothing like Wendy’s chili. It looks nothing like Wend’s chili. It’s dark, extremely thick and doesn’t have that tomato flavor of Wendy’s. I threw my other two cans in the garbage.
I dont lile burn or spicey is canned one spicy like hot?do you think its better than wolf brand or cambells brand chilli or hormel which would you say is best out the cans
We had it 2 days ago and neither of us were impressed. It was no better than any other canned chili. Because of our age and health we look for shortcuts in cooking but I'll just continue to make our chili in the crock-pot.
It seems like what you're saying is that the canned version is not as spicy as the restaurant version, I wanted to try the canned one at Walmart but it was out of stock and yes, a little pricey! 😡
I just don't see how that small can is worth that much ..I just found it at a cost +10% store and it was almost 5 bucks... I love Wendy's chili but there's no way the stuff in the can compares to their restaurant chili. Just about all canned chili has that orange color and most of them are gut grenades... my uncle told me they used the leftover burger patties to make chili at Wendy's, I don't know what they do but I love it! Closest thing to homemade chili you can find anywhere!
It's supposed to have sugar and it's probably reason today other can one don't have the spice because it's supposed to have a little bit of red pepper and cayenne pepper to give it as the kick
The canned chili looked like Wolf Brand chili to me. Both canned and restaurant are more expensive than most brands which isn't good. I make my own so I control the amount of spices and ingredients.

Best canned chili I've tried so far. Not exactly like drive thru but close enough. I like it with white rice.
PRICE UPDATE: The price now on the large size chili is $4.64 (tax incl.) at my local Wendy's restaurant. The canned Wendy's chili is $4.42. Bottom line I'm buying the canned version for stocking my pantry and convenience to have on hand.
I'll just stick with Stagg chili for $2.00.
I love Stagg chili!
THX Ill try this
I was not aware that Wendy’s had a can chili. I add cheese, sour cream and onions to the restaurant one and my Hormel chili at home gets cheese and sour cream. I will have to look for this. Thanks for another great review! Have a terrific weekend!
It's brand new. Most places don't have it yet. Hopefully by this summer it will be readily available.
@@snowflakehunter thanks that was very interesting!
Easily the best "canned" chili I've ever eaten. Blows hormel out of the water
hormel is bland
I disagree. I didn’t like it. I grew up on hormel and I’ll continue eating it.
does no one like wolf brand chilli ??

Thanks Kevin for letting me know about the can chill
That's too expensive for a can of chili.
Should be 1.49 a can
Thanks for the video. I might have to try that even though it is more expensive than getting it at the restaurant lol.
Great review!!! I used to love Wendy’s chili- it’s like the kind our family in Ohio makes. Nobody in Texas eats that kind of chili, so it’s been a great treat throughout the years. However, three years ago it made me deathly ill twice and I’ll never eat it again. 😂
Oh wow!! Food poisoning??
I had my first ever experience with food poisoning from crab legs a few months ago
Bought 6 cans at sams for 3.33 each. Still good price but i figure its decent price for a quick meal substitute. Figured I'd give it a try
At $5.00 a can I can’t buy it. Way to high in cost
The canned version was expensive when i read the description but so is everything else i am absolutely a huge fan of the restaurant wendys chili
I eat Wendy's canned chili all the time. I can't stand any other canned chili. I put a little Tabasco Sauce in it to spice it up a bit. Yummy.
The price,is insane!
If they're selling the chili at walmart they really need to sell the hot chili sauce too, liquid gold.
More like liquid crack. I'll put it on other savory foods and it gets massive milage in added flavor.
@@kevinb5417more like “liquid shit” since it’s crap.
All set.
Ir ConAgra makes it it is Van Camps chili with some things added VC also makes Wolf chili.
Try Texas roadhouse chili steak&shake was my fav till i tried roadhouse 🏚
Very informative and good to know...I'll see if my Walmart has this yet. 😊
I didn’t realize that Wendy’s sold their chili in the canned. So bad they only have with beans.
Ya never know, if it is a hit, they could do that, but I doubt it. Gotta be some chili sin carne next shelf up.
For the price I'd rather go to Wendys on BOGO chili Tuesdays where you can get 2 large chilis for around $5 and YOU MUST have the hot chili sauce!
You did a Good review and had a full belly in the end 😂❤
I am surprised that it is not prepared as a frozen entree for the microwave.
Skyline is in a totally different category. It’s more of a sauce to be put on pasta, or they sell a thicker version for hot dog chili. Bad comparison to mention it when testing chili con carne.
I am in love with your review. Thanks
I'd add a dash of Cayenne pepper to give it a little kick. I'll buy a can next time i'm at Walmart.
Wolf Brand Home Style Chili is better and cheaper.Stagg Brand Chili is great too.
False advertisements must be legal now cuz it tastes nothing like Wendy's chili in the restaurant
Thanks for the comparison!
I just can't do canned chili. Even for chili dogs, I make my own. I have certain seasonings and add-ins that canned can't even touch. I would take it to work in Pyrex bowls as Ziploc containers stain. Thank you Kevin.
snob.
What do I do when I go in Wendy’s. I tell them stirred up first. Then pull it up from the bottom. And put it in the cup. That way you get more product than a juice
Stir in a figure 8, from the bottom to the top, ooohhh chilli can be served with cheese.
I didnt know they had it in stores interesting thank you
That's kind of expensive for a can of chili. Especially from Walmart.
Cool,This is on my aisle at work.🥰
I haven’t had Wendy’s chili since the 80’s and to be honest, I don’t remember it being that good? Might have to give it a try it again to see if my opinion has changed. I make a couple different homemade chili recipes (one in the crockpot and one on the stove) so I’m kind of thinking a mass market brand like this will come off as a tad bland - guess we’ll see………🤔
I bought some, tried it and thought it tasted absolutely nothing like Wendy’s chili. It looks nothing like Wend’s chili. It’s dark, extremely thick and doesn’t have that tomato flavor of Wendy’s. I threw my other two cans in the garbage.
I’m so glad you did the comparison! Thank you
I love wendy’s canned chilli!
I liked the original Wendy's chili. When they "improved" it years ago, they ruined it.
I did not know they had this. I've tried the wienerschnitzel can chili that one is good. Tastes the same.
It's supposed to have sugar and it's probably reason today other can one don't have the spice because it's supposed to have a little bit of red pepper and cayenne pepper to give it as the kick
Wendy's canned chilli made by Con-Agra. They also make TV dinners! :P
The canned chili looked like Wolf Brand chili to me. Both canned and restaurant are more expensive than most brands which isn't good. I make my own so I control the amount of spices and ingredients.
The last time I went and got their chili it was like 90 percent beans .10 percent meat.i won't buy it again
Wendys chili, back in the day,was so good.
Great great great review Kevin thank you 👍❤️💪
I hear the restaurant puts the leftover burger patties in it from the day before
I like it. Just needs the wendys hot sauce packets
I added cheese and onions like I ordered at Wendy's and its just as good to me.
Never knew there was Wendy's chili in a can. I've never seen it here in Richmond VA
When I get Wendy’s chili, I have them give me raw onion and hot sauce. These are free to add as well.
the canned wendys chili isnt bad but cause of the price i think ill stick to hormell chili :P
