Hoping this post helps the newbies like me :-)
December 2021: My one-month-old FD's software does not have the "PreFrozen / Not Frozen" choice. I'm still learning the unit's particulars regarding freeze times and dry times. I've had lots of contact with Harvest Right for inquiries since what I've learned through slightly older videos (yours, Brian, and several others) doesn't jive with the current software. From what I've been told, the current units have sensors to detect the frozen-ness of the food; when the food attains said frozen-ness it goes to dry mode. IDK if that is accurate, but that is what I was advised from a HR rep.
Regardless of whether the software info jives ( :-) ), the results of the FD food is spot on!! I learn so much from you, Brian, and all of your followers. Thank you so much for taking the time to experiment and post your experiences! So very valuable!!!
Great info. What they need is an app to work with smart phone to check time n to extend time for when your out.

Hows it coming along now that you had for about 8 months?
We’ve had our freeze dryer since May 22 early on we experienced frequent vacuum failures. Initially I tried the epoxy vacuum sensor fix recommended online. It only produced minor sporadic improvements. I then checked the hose between the unit and the Premium Pump an there were no apparent issues. The next thing I inspected was the pump’s demister and found that the thread had unusual play in it. So I applied some Teflon tape on the threads. I change the tape every time I do an oil change. Since using the Teflon tape I’ve ran well in excess of 250 batches without a vacuum failure. What a simple and cheap fix!
You made sure you didn't lose the o-ring for the demister, I presume?
The freeze time is adjustable, in the "custom" menu. That will do the same thing as the new software.

Just spoke with Harvest Right & the person on the line said he’s not throughly convinced this upgrade is something he’s going to purchase himself when it becomes available. He said it has it’s positives & negatives and it’s sold on this upgrade. They’re working out the bugs.
What were the negatives?
I also talked with a man at HR who said not to get it he said you are losing control over the freeze cycle and that the samples that he did with the new software didnt have the same high quality. :( Have you noticed any quality change since your update? Im sad because I was looking forward to shorter freeze times and thus shorter batch times.
Where can we get this firmware? I just got one of these. it can with the wrong firmware. Harvest Right sent me a new firmware, but it actually rolled the version back even further.

One thing I will say, I think you said it yourself, (not first-hand knowledge, but I've heard it from many sources), any other Freeze Dryer is a piece of lab equipment, or for commercial manufacture, and costs ten times more. I like Harvest Right.
HR has a tough job. No one else will try and join the residential FDing sector. Technology and innovation are expensive, hence the cost of the machines. Many people can do a job or create (like a creating a freeze dryer) but have terrible business sense. Is this the case with Harvestright, Dunno? But like i said, the machine does what its supposed to for me for close to 3 years now and there is nothing that compares to it.
WOW I really like this As electricity cost in Australia is A$0.40c KWH This will save money and wear tear on unit. Running off Solar12v panels 5* 285w =delivering 1KW =88 amps full sun looking to further increase by 1KW. Battery Storage are deep cycle gel batteries with 9600 watt hours (8 *100 amp hours) Gel batteries can only be taken to 40% discharge B4 damage occurs to batteries The medium size unit has max wattage draw on dry cycle of 1400w approx.The large unit which I have bough On this cycle is 2000w or 50% more This is compensated by double food processing so for me is best option. Yet to take delivery At present running 2000w modified sign wave inverter I do have to buy a 2,500 pure sine wave as the FD has computer in it .The battery bank may handle freeze cycle but not the dry cycle as there no sun at night looking to solution here

Just got mine. Running first batch now. Running 5 trays of my wife’s homemade chili.
Chili works well.
After 7 months - how do you like it? I have the large unit as well along with the oil less pump. I've had it since Dec 2018. The only place I had to set up is my garage. That has had its challenges too being here in Las Vegas. Garage gets to 110 F in the summer. HR dryer is designed to run at 35 to 90 F. Had to use a ceiling fan mounted in the wall to pipe cool air through the machine and return to the house to keep it at or below 90 F. So far it's working well. It should add some heat to the house in the winter.
I run batches almost 24/7 and have put up a lot of food so far. I find it to be a nice hobby and prepping at the same time. You name it, I've probably dried it. I have 10 pounds of potato's going right now.
I use a food processor to powder certain things like milk, eggs, spaghetti sauce. I have no regrets buying this machine.
Do you have to let the freezer go through the defrost stage before you add another batch? Or can you take one out and immediately put another batch in without defrosting or thawing the machine?
if you defrost the chamber it takes about 30-60 minutes before you can add another. My freeze dryer is an older one, not sure if that has changed in the last few years. Mine will also make you wait 60 minutes to let the pump cool.
Ours has software version v5.1.15, but the menu doesn't do what yours does. There is no slow update to be found. We received notice of software upgrade to v5.19, but I can't get to the slow update option in order to turn the machine off and back on to initiate the update.
Has anyone put a GoPro in one of them? I’d like to see the various candies and jus watch the change
Hello, i replaced the computer pad and screen on my harvest right I purchased about 9 months ago and still haven’t used yet. Now the screen just says » FACTORY SETTINGS » I do not know how to set the factory settings, just the date and time. Does anyone know what I need to do?

Is there a way to reset my software to factory settings? It seems to be acting weird since I wiped the touch screen off as it had finger prints on it, I’m not talking about recalibration but software reset to factory settings, V4.1.26
Mine came with this version of the software. Would have been nice if the manual was updated with it because it had instructions for settings I didn't have, LOL.

@@nanmaco Weird. so far nothing has contaminated my oil like that. It's very light colored when new but turned to a slightly darker amber colored after several uses.
I have a pump that circulates the oil through a filter while the vacuum pump is in use. After each batch I drain the oil out of the system and filter it. Other than a little bit of water and some particles the oil comes out of the pump and circulation system pretty clean.
I don't freeze dry canned or commercial frozen food. They never come out as good as fresh produce. For the beets I cook them in a pressure cooker then let them cool. Slice them then freeze dry them. No mess or fuss.
Other produce like broccoli, carrots, green beans, etc I blanch for about 30 to 40 seconds before freeze drying them to retain the color.
@@nanmaco That maintenance schedule has changed. They don't recommend alcohol anymore. They now say to use water to flush the pump and let it run for 1 hour after the flush. It is oil free not maintenance free. I took an old coffee can and cut a hole in the side to slip over the pump vent and catch the water. Helps keep it from spraying all over the place.
@@nanmaco Yes, I would have to agree with you on that point. Just this last batch, I'm hearing new noises coming from my pump. A bit gravelly sounding. Still pulls a good vacuum but strange noises make me nervous.
Any thoughts on that?
After damage to my freeze dryer in shipping from being sent back to me after repair they gave me another unit with V5.1.16 it does not give me a choice for pre-frozen or not frozen, anyone know anything about this new software version?
This is strange. The last 2 digits on this update shows 25. I just purchased mine a couple of months ago. It came with 23. I started having vacuum problems so harvest right nailed me their latest version, which is 24. The major change only requires the vacuum pump to achieve 1500 m torr to work. This is a 2018 video and is showing update 25 which apparently doesn't exianymore.
Pay attention to the first numbers. The newest versions start with 5
What models of freeze dryer will this software work on, and how do you download it? I see no place, no 'support' section, on the HR web site.
From what i gather, it will work on all of their previous models. It has not been released as an update just yet.
Can you use this update on older machines like 2017?

Question it's just me here but growing season I waste a lot of food off my garden and you know you can't freeze a lot of it turn to crap so is this freeze dryer actually worth it?

In my opinion - yes it's worth it. With most fresh vegetables you need to blanch the vegetables before freezing or freeze drying. Having them slightly cooked helps keep them from "turning to crap".

the freeze dryer pulls the water out during the freeze drying process. It stays as ice when the cycle is complete. after you remove the food, the ice melts and drains into a container.
I just recently purchased (well, 6 months ago) a freeze dryer from them. Would I have to pay for a firmware update?
They are not offering the new software for older machines just yet. When they do offer it up i'm not sure if they will give a grace period for recent customers. You can always give them a call. Worst they can say is no.
I was told $79.00 for the update. Just for info....hey retired at 40 did you have to purchase the update? Or did you get a promo? If so how much did you pay?
@@craigolsen8057 they quoted me $150.00 Def not willing to pay that considering ive had multiple problems with my Dryer and had to buy a new pump due to the shaft seal failing. i also had to change the whole screen module and motherboard as ours went dead only a few months after owning it. I will try to phone them and talk them down in price if not get the software free considering ive had to spend alot more $$$ on the new pump due to a flaw in the pump.
Has anyone been able to confirm whether Harvest Right is allowing the previous version of the freezedryer to have it's firmware updated?

This software is available on harvestrights newer models. They started putting this software on everything shortly after this video was released.
I just purchased the version 4 upgrade from Harvestright. This is the unpolished version. It was $70. When the polished version is released it will sell for $150 but people that get the unpolished version now will receive it for free. The polished version has 3 or 4 upgrades that the cheaper unpolished version does not.
Without this software & insertinng food directly from the freezer into the FD, how many hours do you recommend setting the freeze time to?
I have been getting away with 2 hours max 3 with the software, however the software turns on the pump at the same time as the freeze which will not happen w/o the update. Try 3 hours and see what happens and let me know.
We plug our v. pump into the wall with pre-frozen food and set a 4 hr freeze (vacuum pump is running during that 4 hours). It has worked really really well. Batch times are often 10 hours shorter.
That's good to hear that it works manually w/o software. I am really diggin the shorter freeze times.

The software doesn't turn it on until you reach 0 degrees, or lower, so it depends on whether you are coming off a defrost cycle and whether or not you let it sit beyond the programmed 30 minutes. I also found that the food needs to be really solid (I ran a batch out of the freezer on my refrigerator, which was not cold enough) or else it may never finish.
Hows the power? Did it save on your bill?
It reduces the total cycle time by 1/3. I don't know exactly how much $ it saves, but it's significant.

It seems like my average batch runs from $2-4. It depends on your KWh cost also. I think ours is about 8 or 9 cents per hour.
So has your harvest right ever sucked oil into the chamber?
Mine has not. I believe that means you have a seal that is failing in the pump.
Yes - one major reason I went with the oil less pump. To me it's worth the extra money.

Retired at 40 - Can you provide a download link to the firmware upgrade? My HRFD doesn't have this update. I'm having an issue with the vacuum pulling a seal and have the valve closed, tight new hoses, the door seems to be sealing, and am thinking now it may be software that is the issue as it just hangs at >2500. Thank you!
I don't know that Harvestright is provided this software for older models as of yet. Have you contacted HR?

Retired at 40- Live.Life.Simple. Yes, thanks I followed your tutorial. After 15m it gets to 5200. I can see the door sealing and switched from the jb to the new pump; still fails.

I got my update with the trusty help of my beloved fiancé (usb wouldn’t show up in MY computer but worked fine in his 🤷♀️).
Anyway, now how do I get the update into my Harvest Right? I plugged the usb in, flipped the switch, and NOTHING. The Harvest Right just went right to its normal ol’ screen...

I was VERY Curious about this upgrade when you first mentioned it. I am not sure that i will bother with it now. If i put frozen food into the dryer i simply lower the freeze time to 5 hours, sometimes more, sometimes less(I assume with the software upgrade i would loose this). Also, do you know the sequence to tap the corners on the screen to enter into the service mode(hidden features mode...?) It might be a good video. I didn't know it existed until a Harvest Right Tech had me do it over the phone to diagnose my failing vacuum pump( witch they replaced for free under warranty)
I have heard mixed results so far. I like it because it takes the guess work out of when to switch over. I will continue to run it and give updates. I did a vacuum pump video awhile ago that briefly touched on the hidden screens but i might want to do a video on all of the options that it allows. Thanks for your support.
One of the reasons for the up grade is to ensure the food is thoroughly frozen and avoid issues with the pump. If not frozen completely moisture can be pulled into the pump shortening the life of the pump. HR cautions people not to shorten or bypass the freeze cycle.
I feel like this will never come to older machines...so frustrating.
