My wife had me sell my boat because of that kind of noise, I was dreaming about a Wharram until I saw this video... .imagine spending years building one just to find out they are this noisy.

This one of the absolute best boat tours that I’ve ever watched. And the boat is clearly one of the cleanest, most well designed and very thoughtfully outfitted sailing vessels I’ve ever seen. Just the right gear in exactly the right places, no waste or extravagance, incredibly well put together. Huge congrats to you both for this accomplishment. You have alot of space on deck, the layout is great for a crew of 3 or 4. Amazed at the rear locker. Your realy close to the sailing nature. That fold down ramp is nice. Your have a vessel many times less the cost but have traveled many thousands of miles.
So impressed with the total utility of your cat. Personally in the market for a long term boat for the rest of my retirement years while I am still relatively healthy. Your fine boat is so awesome. Thanks for the video and information.

Thanks for the tour! Watching the earlier Transatlantic trip. I didn't get the impression things were quite that cozy - or well and cleverly equipped. I could make it work. My biggest problem would be the headroom, but I expect most time is spent on deck anyway. Next time I see one of these I just might ask to come aboard and take a personal look around. Nice job!

+Rachael Wisely its our pleasure to share the boat tour with you! Yes, the Wharrams are very easy to sail and learn on. Being on a cat gives a lot more pleasure to newcomers than leaning over on a monohull. Also, the Wharrams are true sailing craft first, they are pretty quick and yet the loads on the sails are still manageable by hand. I think the best way to learn sailing first is to get in a sailing dinghy, not a cat though, and get some instructions from a friend, a small sailing club or do a short dinghy sailing course. Thats how I introduced Zaya to sailing and it gave her a ton of confidence when she set out with me on Lf. Good luck with your plans! not sure what you mean by that? Wharrams are probably the most circumnavigated catamarans out there, certainly the most proven blue water safety record. We have sailed Luckyfish over 10,000 miles including an Atlantic crossing.
@@SailingLuckyfish I want draft and moderate cockpit elevation in rough seas. I'm not saying this style is bad in any way, I'm just saying every boat has pros and cons. I would personally begin feeling nervous around 13ft. in this style. I like the useable flat deck space. That is definitely a pro.
@@kenhiett5266 makes sense if you are referring to keelboat specs. With cats, low windage and shallow draft are safety features that help prevent capsize. As far as sea-state goes, nothing beats searoom and thats more of a seamanship thing in my view. Cats are very stable in high winds, high seas under drogue or sea anchor, but sea room is required.
@@SailingLuckyfishI believe the cat vs monohull debate is about as equally matched as is possible in the world of pure physics. Each has obvious flaws and strengths. I guess I just see the air draft of your boat coupled with the known characteristics of a cat and it makes me very suspicious of it's passage worthiness. I did watch a fairly well produced video of a Wharrams doing a transatlantic crossing and was impressed, but I also noticed their trepidation when dealing with state 5 seas. Maybe the air draft of your boat is more of a mental error in judgment I'm making. You are definitely a more experienced captain than I am. I am in the process of deciding between a cat and a monohull and it has become such a difficult decision that I almost view it as my nemesis at this point.
@@kenhiett5266 When deciding on a hull configuration, think about the 99% of the time you'll be sailing underway, and it would be REALLY NICE if you could sit with a plate and a cup in front of you and have your dinner without everything sliding off onto the floor. I've done weeks at a time on monohull, and man it gets weary never being able to take your hand off anything or it rolls away. Overall quality of life issue, sounds silly but there you go, and it plays out in lots of ways 100 times a day. Catamarans (& tris) are for living on for yourself. Monohulls are for carrying craptons of cargo on the cheap, working for a master. If you look at their evolutions clear back to ancient times, that's really what they come down to. Monohulls literally can't move without at least trying to tip your ass off that seat and into the sea. So maybe you're tough enough to fight that war every minute of every day and every night, every mile, every step and reach and action you take. Maybe you're that tough. Still, do you really want to live that way? Is that living the free and relaxing lifestyle? Personally, I don't think so, not so much by comparison. The SailOceans channel is another good live-on channel, a rebuilt tri-hull done to their own needs, where they are full-time/season with 2 little boys. Yah, with kids, like 2 & 4 years old, and all that brings. I think that's pretty much proof of multi-hull livability right there. The Maori and Hawaiians used to happily load the whole tribe up for weeks at a time to journey to new shores in the open sea with multihulls. European navies with monohulls, on the other hand, had to take on prisoners who would otherwise be rotting in jail, or even literally bash guys over the head with a club and drag them on board in the night, just to get a crew. Of course, you're a free person. You can decide which way for yourself.
Very nice I startet this weekend with your video about the algorithms of the sailing channels and after checking 3-4 of your videos including the interview with James Wharram and his wife went to the Wharram site, read some history and now came to this video. I love this boat it has everything and is not such a floating luxury catamaran as most cats you see these days. Great, I also checked your sailing along part on the website and will keep this in mind when the time is right👍🏽👊🏽

Hey man, there’s a nice kid in the PNW who’s trying to refit an old home built wharram that had fallen into total disrepair, but I’m concerned he’s going about it the wrong way, making it way to complicated, overloading it with a huge cabin top and ultimately making it unsafe. His channel is called Finding Simon and the boat stuff is the Sink or Swim playlist. Would be great if you could give him some guidance on how to successfully set up a wharram for cruising. Just an idea.
+Peter Kacandes - That's real kind of you to mention Simons project. We have communicated in the past, around the time he was buying the Wharram. It already had the oversize bridge house - the whole restoration is a massive undertaking, as it is for anyone saving a Wharram thats been neglected. He knows what he is into and I would be reluctant to try to steer another's dream. It's precious when its your own. Sink or swim eh? Pretty good title, that's life out on a limb. I made sure Simon is aware of the all the Wharram resources out there - and I'm sure he's across the "sanctity of the design" which is a common thread. Low windage, low C of G, simplicity!, safety, speed. I haven't been following the progress closely. Can you please give me a quick update... and if its not to late ... where you think its going off the rails ( i.e. is the intended outcome/boat up to the intended use? have either of these been stated clearly?) we have yet to build ours yet... we received the plans 2 1/2tears ago right before I had a stroke. got rid of our small monohull and will hopefully begin building our tiki 38 in the next year or so.. fingers crossed...lololol love your boat... these boats are tank strong.

Still on the computer .. if you are lucky you might find a Tiki 38 similar to Lf for around USD100+k but I have yet to see one since Lf came on the market. We have put another 40+ into her, mostly on safety and storm gear, ground tackle, water maker and some things for comfort. Another 20 or so and we will be there :-). Consensus on the "Wharram builders and friends" group is $70K just for materials to basic sailaway... not including your labour, or electrics, electronics, second and third anchors, RTW gear.... Pro builders come in at around $80K for two unfinished hulls, $140K for very basic sailaway with one engine only... email me for contacts if you want to follow up with any builders. We have no commercial ties :-)

You could build a cabin on the deck for more room couldn't you , a 12x14 enclosure with the helm and saloon enclosing the companion ways on both hulls ?
+Frank Rice yes, quite tight, it is the compromise you make in order to get all the other benefits from the Wharram. They have narrow waterline beam, normally 12:1 or greater LWL:WLB ratio. Depending on what you want to do, the Tikis come in other sizes. I really like the 26 as a go anywhere boat for adventurous types. No Wharram over 26 foot, built to plan, has ever capsized. Good luck with your search! The age of the mono is over (I was a mono man too once)
That's the most wave slapping noise I have heard in all of the various boat channels on UA-cam. How come and how can you put up with it?? And lastly why no saloon up above?? hmm maybe that's the reason so loud but even the other boats (cats) don't seem to be that loud in the cabins. I still would take this over nothing though lol don't get me wrong I just surprised.

Thanks Paul, the pod mate, we always eat up there. Ask any cruiser... they spend 90% of time in cockpit. Interior design and apartment styling is only for boat shows :-)

Capt stew how do you manage in inclimate weather to get from one hatch to another? Seems it might be a bit precarious.....not sure I could handle the divisions of each area like that....but it is a great use of space and well maintained...
We don't tend to move around from cabin to cabin that much, particularly in rough weather or rain. We spend 95% of our time in the pod. Going forward to the head, well, we wait for a calm spot in the waves before opening the hatch, or use the "magic hole" in the centre deck :-). We do give up some of the convenience of living inside like in a bridge-house cat, but in the weather we sail in we prefer the ease of movement around the deck, space, and cooling breezes of our layout. +Quodge Great to get your comment. Im try to think of some negatives... thinking... thinking. "Confirmation bias" eh? (love it!I) It would do a dis-service to the design to put any negatives out there as the list of positives is huge. Many of them sheer genius. I guess there are a few things that take a bit of getting used to on the boat, like any boat. You need to have a certain level of joint movement, fitness, mobility etc as you can find yourself going up and down the companionways a bit. I look at that as a positive since it does keep you fit and allow you to drink and eat as much as you want without getting fat. We also have to watch how much gear we carry. We have a payload of around 1 ton, mostly safety, storm and personal gear. Its plenty for us as we dont like alot of clutter on board anyway, it affects the performance. That's true of any cat but especially so on the Wharrams with our double ended design and deep-V hulls. In return we get great speed (for a cruising yacht) from small, easily handled sails and so on. Could be an easy fix for sure but funnily enough we have grown used to it and only notice it when folks comment on it :-). In truth, the omnidirectional mic used in this vid makes the sounds louder than actual... Glad you like the Wharrams - they certainly fill an important role in the Cat world. As someone said to me yesterday, they are like the Tiny Home answer in a world of McMansions....

+harvey g Great question. The bridge house catamarans you ask about are more suited to temperate climate sailing in my view. You can shut the sliding doors and turn on the heater in the cabin. For the sailing we do, between 30N and 30S I personally prefer the bridge deck, minus the house. This is pretty much the most ideal configuration in my view. Roll up the sides of the pod and you have unrestricted 360 degree view and cool breeze straight over the bows. Something you do not get on a "modern" bridge house catamaran. This is the major difference, there are alot more including acres of deck space to sprawl on, wide un restricted side decks set inboard for ease of movement and safety, easy docking with plenty of vision and low profile/windage, the list goes on. Not to mention the neat deck hatch set into the central cockpit (the magic hole as the girls call it!). Thanks for the question! Cheers from Stew and Zaya
Hello Stew.. I love your Videos! In my childhood my father built a 26 foot plywood sharpie (black skimmer, Bolger design) sailboat which we had years of enjoyment in the panhandle of Florida. In Your interior boat tour video I can close my eyes and remember the sound of water slapping the hull in that sharpie. On passage we rarely sleep in the hulls, normally on the bunks in the pod. When we are on anchor, we all find it quite pleasant to hear the water noise outside. I guess we got used to it very quickly. The mic we used on that video didnt help! Also, if it was an issue to us, we would add some insulation. Easy enough to do, good luck with the build. @@SailingLuckyfish This is interesting to me as I want order blueprints and then custom build the catamaran and build my wharram out of 5083 grade aluminium - double hulled with Great Stuff in between to act as insulation from cold and noise; and because the cells are closed,, it will serve as keeping all (most?) of the water out in the event of striking something, running aground on a reef, etc. The hull sections that are below the water-line will not be painted because I know that I'm going to; at some point in time in the future.

I love your boat it's clean meticulous and I'm sure she can move when the wind is right. I myself am a huge fan of Trimarans. There is a gentleman here on UA-cam (Jason Gard) that sails an old Formula 40 he refitted for cruising; "Spirit" (used to be "Spirit of England") he purchased the boat here in the states and sailed her back to Australia. I love the simplicity of the boat combined with its speed. If you make up to the east coast I'm about 30 minutes from NYC or 2 hours from Newport Rhode Island would certainly like to meet you you and see your boat!! ⛵️⛵️⛵️
In 1977 my friend built a Wharram 51' cat. The Spirit of Alviso. We planned a Pacific 5 year cruise but the plan fell apart before it started. The boat didn't have a pilot house. It only had one too-small outboard mounted in the center. I can't post photos in this comment section but the Spirit of Alviso can be seen here jdonalds.smugmug.com/Vehicles/Boats/Spirit-of-Alviso/i-bVRf53P Compared to Luckfish my friend's boat was quite crude. Luckyfish is nicely finished.
+JC F We use a 12V shower on the deck and will be adding a shower to the head soon, . The deck shower is shown in the deck tour video here ua-cam.com/video/VsCa59fyNq8/v-deo.html. The Wharrams are fairly flexible in their layout, for example I have seen a dedicated shower stall in the spot where our galley on one Tiki 38. Are you looking at getting a cat at some stage? Hi, why did you wire the batteries so that both the + and - are coming off the same (first) battery? It is better to have the + coming from the first battery (going to the breaker panel) and the - from the last battery (also going to the breaker panel). Especially if you have like a battery monitor. Only then it measures correctly. For the rest: beautiful cat!
Great question - not sure what you saw in the video but we do have the +ve and -ve leads coming from the first and last batteries (Although each battery bank are currently isolated i.e. two separate systems). There was a time when we did not but this was corrected in Grenada. For anyone else reading this - this is important to give you full charging and storage of all the batteries. Same goes for the battery monitor. I do hope this clears it up? Cheers and great comment, Stew
Hi again. Ok, if you look 8:55 onwards, you show the battery installation. The three batteries are connected and both + and - minus end on the most left battery. The correct way would be to leave the outgoing connection of the + as it is, but move the outgoing - connection of the right battery to the most left battery. Anyway, both ways work, but this is just the most correct way, as you form a loop so to speak. I hope you get what I mean. Otherwise I can email you with a diagram.
Hi Marco, thanks so much, Yes you are absolutely right. That was some pre-recorded video and does show the incorrect wiring - you have a really good eye! We did correct this on the advice of the electrician from Grenada Marine. He mentioned that it was likely that only one battery was receiving most of the charge and reducing the effective storage, so we we moved one of the leads to the other end. Thanks so much for pointing this out!. Stew
You will find most Jeanneau's and Beneteau's are wired like that, eventhough it is correctly drawn up in the owners manuals. Saves cable basically. I had to rewire my Jeanneau and (professionally) some other Jeanneau's and Beneteau's too. Can't judge other boat brands.

Thanks for the tour! Watching the earlier Transatlantic trip. I didn't get the impression things were quite that cozy - or well and cleverly equipped. I could make it work. My biggest problem would be the headroom, but I expect most time is spent on deck anyway. Next time I see one of these I just might ask to come aboard and take a personal look around. Nice job!

+Rachael Wisely its our pleasure to share the boat tour with you! Yes, the Wharrams are very easy to sail and learn on. Being on a cat gives a lot more pleasure to newcomers than leaning over on a monohull. Also, the Wharrams are true sailing craft first, they are pretty quick and yet the loads on the sails are still manageable by hand. I think the best way to learn sailing first is to get in a sailing dinghy, not a cat though, and get some instructions from a friend, a small sailing club or do a short dinghy sailing course. Thats how I introduced Zaya to sailing and it gave her a ton of confidence when she set out with me on Lf. Good luck with your plans! not sure what you mean by that? Wharrams are probably the most circumnavigated catamarans out there, certainly the most proven blue water safety record. We have sailed Luckyfish over 10,000 miles including an Atlantic crossing.
@@SailingLuckyfish I want draft and moderate cockpit elevation in rough seas. I'm not saying this style is bad in any way, I'm just saying every boat has pros and cons. I would personally begin feeling nervous around 13ft. in this style. I like the useable flat deck space. That is definitely a pro.
@@kenhiett5266 makes sense if you are referring to keelboat specs. With cats, low windage and shallow draft are safety features that help prevent capsize. As far as sea-state goes, nothing beats searoom and thats more of a seamanship thing in my view. Cats are very stable in high winds, high seas under drogue or sea anchor, but sea room is required.
@@SailingLuckyfishI believe the cat vs monohull debate is about as equally matched as is possible in the world of pure physics. Each has obvious flaws and strengths.
I guess I just see the air draft of your boat coupled with the known characteristics of a cat and it makes me very suspicious of it's passage worthiness. I did watch a fairly well produced video of a Wharrams doing a transatlantic crossing and was impressed, but I also noticed their trepidation when dealing with state 5 seas. Maybe the air draft of your boat is more of a mental error in judgment I'm making. You are definitely a more experienced captain than I am. I am in the process of deciding between a cat and a monohull and it has become such a difficult decision that I almost view it as my nemesis at this point.
@@kenhiett5266 When deciding on a hull configuration, think about the 99% of the time you'll be sailing underway, and it would be REALLY NICE if you could sit with a plate and a cup in front of you and have your dinner without everything sliding off onto the floor. I've done weeks at a time on monohull, and man it gets weary never being able to take your hand off anything or it rolls away.
Overall quality of life issue, sounds silly but there you go, and it plays out in lots of ways 100 times a day. Catamarans (& tris) are for living on for yourself. Monohulls are for carrying craptons of cargo on the cheap, working for a master. If you look at their evolutions clear back to ancient times, that's really what they come down to. Monohulls literally can't move without at least trying to tip your ass off that seat and into the sea.
So maybe you're tough enough to fight that war every minute of every day and every night, every mile, every step and reach and action you take. Maybe you're that tough. Still, do you really want to live that way? Is that living the free and relaxing lifestyle? Personally, I don't think so, not so much by comparison.
The SailOceans channel is another good live-on channel, a rebuilt tri-hull done to their own needs, where they are full-time/season with 2 little boys. Yah, with kids, like 2 & 4 years old, and all that brings. I think that's pretty much proof of multi-hull livability right there.
The Maori and Hawaiians used to happily load the whole tribe up for weeks at a time to journey to new shores in the open sea with multihulls.
European navies with monohulls, on the other hand, had to take on prisoners who would otherwise be rotting in jail, or even literally bash guys over the head with a club and drag them on board in the night, just to get a crew.
Of course, you're a free person. You can decide which way for yourself.
Very nice I startet this weekend with your video about the algorithms of the sailing channels and after checking 3-4 of your videos including the interview with James Wharram and his wife went to the Wharram site, read some history and now came to this video.
I love this boat it has everything and is not such a floating luxury catamaran as most cats you see these days.

Hey man, there’s a nice kid in the PNW who’s trying to refit an old home built wharram that had fallen into total disrepair, but I’m concerned he’s going about it the wrong way, making it way to complicated, overloading it with a huge cabin top and ultimately making it unsafe. His channel is called Finding Simon and the boat stuff is the Sink or Swim playlist. Would be great if you could give him some guidance on how to successfully set up a wharram for cruising. Just an idea.
+Peter Kacandes - That's real kind of you to mention Simons project. We have communicated in the past, around the time he was buying the Wharram. It already had the oversize bridge house - the whole restoration is a massive undertaking, as it is for anyone saving a Wharram thats been neglected. He knows what he is into and I would be reluctant to try to steer another's dream. It's precious when its your own.

I made sure Simon is aware of the all the Wharram resources out there - and I'm sure he's across the "sanctity of the design" which is a common thread. Low windage, low C of G, simplicity!, safety, speed.

Can you please give me a quick update... and if its not to late ... where you think its going off the rails ( i.e. is the intended outcome/boat up to the intended use? have either of these been stated clearly?) we have yet to build ours yet... we received the plans 2 1/2tears ago right before I had a stroke. got rid of our small monohull and will hopefully begin building our tiki 38 in the next year or so.. fingers crossed...lololol love your boat... these boats are tank strong.

Still on the computer .. if you are lucky you might find a Tiki 38 similar to Lf for around USD100+k but I have yet to see one since Lf came on the market. We have put another 40+ into her, mostly on safety and storm gear, ground tackle, water maker and some things for comfort. Another 20 or so and we will be there :-). Consensus on the "Wharram builders and friends" group is $70K just for materials to basic sailaway... not including your labour, or electrics, electronics, second and third anchors, RTW gear.... Pro builders come in at around $80K for two unfinished hulls, $140K for very basic sailaway with one engine only... email me for contacts if you want to follow up with any builders. We have no commercial ties :-)

+Frank Rice yes, quite tight, it is the compromise you make in order to get all the other benefits from the Wharram. They have narrow waterline beam, normally 12:1 or greater LWL:WLB ratio. Depending on what you want to do, the Tikis come in other sizes. I really like the 26 as a go anywhere boat for adventurous types. No Wharram over 26 foot, built to plan, has ever capsized. Good luck with your search! The age of the mono is over (I was a mono man too once)

That's the most wave slapping noise I have heard in all of the various boat channels on UA-cam. How come and how can you put up with it?? And lastly why no saloon up above?? hmm maybe that's the reason so loud but even the other boats (cats) don't seem to be that loud in the cabins. I still would take this over nothing though lol don't get me wrong I just surprised.

Thanks Paul, the pod mate, we always eat up there. Ask any cruiser... they spend 90% of time in cockpit. Interior design and apartment styling is only for boat shows :-)

Capt stew how do you manage in inclimate weather to get from one hatch to another? Seems it might be a bit precarious.....not sure I could handle the divisions of each area like that....but it is a great use of space and well maintained...
We don't tend to move around from cabin to cabin that much, particularly in rough weather or rain. We spend 95% of our time in the pod. Going forward to the head, well, we wait for a calm spot in the waves before opening the hatch, or use the "magic hole" in the centre deck :-). We do give up some of the convenience of living inside like in a bridge-house cat, but in the weather we sail in we prefer the ease of movement around the deck, space, and cooling breezes of our layout. +Quodge Great to get your comment. Im try to think of some negatives... thinking... thinking. "Confirmation bias" eh? (love it!I) It would do a dis-service to the design to put any negatives out there as the list of positives is huge. Many of them sheer genius. I guess there are a few things that take a bit of getting used to on the boat, like any boat. You need to have a certain level of joint movement, fitness, mobility etc as you can find yourself going up and down the companionways a bit. I look at that as a positive since it does keep you fit and allow you to drink and eat as much as you want without getting fat. We also have to watch how much gear we carry. We have a payload of around 1 ton, mostly safety, storm and personal gear. Its plenty for us as we dont like alot of clutter on board anyway, it affects the performance. That's true of any cat but especially so on the Wharrams with our double ended design and deep-V hulls. In return we get great speed (for a cruising yacht) from small, easily handled sails and so on. I like the Wharrams but they need some noise insulation, below decks is very loud and that is with only tiny waves lapping the hulls
Could be an easy fix for sure but funnily enough we have grown used to it and only notice it when folks comment on it :-). In truth, the omnidirectional mic used in this vid makes the sounds louder than actual... Glad you like the Wharrams - they certainly fill an important role in the Cat world. As someone said to me yesterday, they are like the Tiny Home answer in a world of McMansions....

+harvey g Great question. The bridge house catamarans you ask about are more suited to temperate climate sailing in my view. You can shut the sliding doors and turn on the heater in the cabin. For the sailing we do, between 30N and 30S I personally prefer the bridge deck, minus the house. This is pretty much the most ideal configuration in my view. Roll up the sides of the pod and you have unrestricted 360 degree view and cool breeze straight over the bows. Something you do not get on a "modern" bridge house catamaran. This is the major difference, there are alot more including acres of deck space to sprawl on, wide un restricted side decks set inboard for ease of movement and safety, easy docking with plenty of vision and low profile/windage, the list goes on. Not to mention the neat deck hatch set into the central cockpit (the magic hole as the girls call it!). Thanks for the question! Cheers from Stew and Zaya

Hello Stew.. I love your Videos! In my childhood my father built a 26 foot plywood sharpie (black skimmer, Bolger design) sailboat which we had years of enjoyment in the panhandle of Florida. In Your interior boat tour video I can close my eyes and remember the sound of water slapping the hull in that sharpie.
Question, is it hard to sleep with the Tiki design hull with no insulation? all the water noise clanking..

Hey there Wyatt, great to hear your background. Bolger designs did alot for the homebuilders. Re the wave slap, it truly is not a big deal to us. On passage we rarely sleep in the hulls, normally on the bunks in the pod. When we are on anchor, we all find it quite pleasant to hear the water noise outside. I guess we got used to it very quickly. The mic we used on that video didnt help! Also, if it was an issue to us, we would add some insulation. Easy enough to do, good luck with the build. When we are on anchor, we all find it quite pleasant to hear the water noise outside. I guess we got used to it very quickly. The mic we used on that video didn't help! catamaran and build my wharram out of 5083 grade aluminium - double hulled with Great
Stuff in between to act as insulation from cold and noise; and because the cells are closed,, it will serve as keeping all (most?) of the water out in the event of striking something, running aground on a reef, etc. The hull sections that are below the water-line will not be painted because I know that I'm going to; at some point in time in the future.

There is a gentleman here on UA-cam (Jason Gard) that sails an old Formula 40 he refitted for cruising; "Spirit" (used to be "Spirit of England") he purchased the boat here in the states and sailed her back to Australia.
I love the simplicity of the boat combined with its speed.
If you make up to the east coast I'm about 30 minutes from NYC or 2 hours from Newport Rhode Island would certainly like to meet you you and see your boat!! ⛵️⛵️⛵️

In 1977 my friend built a Wharram 51' cat. The Spirit of Alviso. We planned a Pacific 5 year cruise but the plan fell apart before it started. The boat didn't have a pilot house. It only had one too-small outboard mounted in the center. Compared to Luckfish my friend's boat was quite crude. Luckyfish is nicely finished.

+JC F We use a 12V shower on the deck and will be adding a shower to the head soon, . The deck shower is shown in the deck tour video here ua-cam.com/video/VsCa59fyNq8/v-deo.html. The Wharrams are fairly flexible in their layout, for example I have seen a dedicated shower stall in the spot where our galley on one Tiki 38. Are you looking at getting a cat at some stage? Hi, why did you wire the batteries so that both the + and - are coming off the same (first) battery? It is better to have the + coming from the first battery (going to the breaker panel) and the - from the last battery (also going to the breaker panel). Especially if you have like a battery monitor. Only then it measures correctly. For the rest: beautiful cat!
Great question - not sure what you saw in the video but we do have the +ve and -ve leads coming from the first and last batteries (Although each battery bank are currently isolated i.e. two separate systems). There was a time when we did not but this was corrected in Grenada. For anyone else reading this - this is important to give you full charging and storage of all the batteries. Hi again. Ok, if you look 8:55 onwards, you show the battery installation. The three batteries are connected and both + and - minus end on the most left battery. The correct way would be to leave the outgoing connection of the + as it is, but move the outgoing - connection of the right battery to the most left battery. Anyway, both ways work, but this is just the most correct way, as you form a loop so to speak. I hope you get what I mean. Otherwise I can email you with a diagram.
Hi Marco, thanks so much, Yes you are absolutely right. That was some pre-recorded video and does show the incorrect wiring - you have a really good eye! We did correct this on the advice of the electrician from Grenada Marine. He mentioned that it was likely that only one battery was receiving most of the charge and reducing the effective storage, so we we moved one of the leads to the other end. You will find most Jeanneau's and Beneteau's are wired like that, eventhough it is correctly drawn up in the owners manuals. Saves cable basically. I had to rewire my Jeanneau and (professionally) some other Jeanneau's and Beneteau's too. Can't judge other boat brands.
