I liked the idea of "pace and lead". The story is really thought-provoking.
But while you were telling the story, a few questions popped into my head.
    1. Is it okay to lie to someone because we think it will benefit them? I'm sure there are repercussions to that.
    2. Shouldn't a person try to excel in every task that is given to them (or they have opted for it themselves without knowing about their interests), irrespective of the result?
This might sound similar to the quote in Gita - "Karm Kiye Jaa, Phal Ki Iccha Na Rakh".
Should we live by this quote?

Well... Lying doesn't help! In the long run it comes back to haunt you, especially in parenting.
I think every person should find the purpose of life, vision of where they want to be, their passion, and then work their way in that direction. I personally don't follow the statement of 'Karam kar, phal ki iccha na rakh', because everything we do has to be with an intention in mind.
