Concreting a Model Railway Diesel Depot - Thornley TMD

- In this video, I show how what I used to create a concrete base to my diesel traction maintenance depot - Thornley TMD.
A lot of people use card and build up layers, which I have done in the past but found that over time, the card can peel and you've also gotta be shit hot at cutting card precisely.
Others have used polyfilla but this can create a lot of mess when sanding so I was told about using tile grout, so looked into what was available out there and decided to go down the route of a flexible tile grout powder and create the mix, which is like a cake mix. It's then spread over the desired area in stages (dependant on area size) using a frame and then left to dry...preferably 36 hours. Once dry, it can be sanded down without creating the awful mess that polyfilla gives, plus I find that this looks very realistic.

Thankyou Steve I intend to. I noticed on one of your videos you have 37693 is it a Lima one? I think it was in railfreight red stripe.
Steve Smith oh is it named sir William arrol? I got the coal sector triple grey version but can't find many images of it. your layout is awesome
Steve Smith you're welcome. I'm currently building mine and used the Metcalfe engine sheds but now scratch building a 5 road engine shed two locomotives long out of a recycled crisp box and cladding it with slaters plssticard. have you got any suggestions for the doors?
Thankyou for your help. I did think plasticard and hinge it using tiny hinges using tubes and rods. Servos sound like a great idea I thought using rubber bands to pull them down and a pulley mechanism to raise them
Hi thanks looks great looking forward to seeing more
