I prefer the original Japanese name/release for this game: Area 88. And all the pilots are mercenaries, with some of them there against their will. But its either shoot down the other guys, or your own superiors will put a bullet in your head when you land, plus there's a remote-detonated bomb under the ejection seat if you try to run for it.
This dude is ubertalented. I use almost every weapon that I can afford in almost every battle. This guy hardly uses anything. Incredible! One secret is--on the green truck levels, you do not need any weapons at all and you can build more money like that, too. You can ram through them shooting the whole time; believe me; you will not get out. You will flash red, but you will not get out. You can defeat them in 2 passes like this without spending any money.
This was one of the first games I owned for the SNES. I loved it so much! It was a hard game, but it was so much fun I kept wanting to play it till I beat it.
Man, the UN is cheaper and more broke in this game than in real life. Three pilots, and the dudes' gotta buy their own weapons from some old underground crazy prepper dude. Step your defense budget game up UN.
thats without mentioning they have you fly an F-8 which was ancient even in 1989. In fact the US navy retired it in 1976 and the Naval reserve, in 1987.... It's one of the early american fighter jets.
to be fair though, it's originally based on a Manga called Area 88 (also the name of the game in japan) and they are not in the UN. It's a mercenary force operating from a base called....area 88.
SNES version have much better music then Arcade version, nonlinear level order but arcade version have little more impressive last level and not identical overall. Its worth watching too.
Probably one of the best game I've ever played in my life, I was only 9 or 10 but it was so cool... the musics are awesome btw. Thanks for bringing back memories mate ;)
Little late to the party but same boat. I remember playing this a ton at my cousin’s house when we were kids and I’ve been trying so hard to find the game the last couple months. Finally FINALLY found it and couldn’t stop watching. What an awesome snes game that really isn’t talked about much. Seriously what a gem
What an awesome game this is. I've played it thousands of times over the years, but I've never come anywhere close to not getting hit. And I thought I was good at this game, lol. What you've done here is unbelievably impressive! Well done! :)
Weird, because I once borrowed the game (and still have it) from somebody, and never got around to returning it because he never asked for it back. The guy wasn't so much a direct friend though, as much as the brother of one of my brother's friends that I met a handful of times.
LOL same here, my younger brother borrowed the U.N. Squadron SNES cartridge from one of his friends and the guy moved out of the area like a year later xD
I suppose that's simply the fate of every copy of U.N. Squadron. Moral of the story: Nobody who owns U.N. Squadron today bought it when it first released. They either bought it used later on, or borrowed it from somebody forever.
@@gurvmlk Me too :)) I can't believe you guys too... lent it to a classmate 15 years ago... needless to say we're no longer classmates, never got it back
Two things. 1 - You play like a God, I can't do this well, this is incredible to watch. 2 - Level 3 was hilarious. As soon as the dingy boats show up it's like, nope, you don't get to play.
This was one of my favourite games as a kid. I remember finishing it then immediately starting again and again until i was sick to death of it but it wasn't long before i went back to it. I wish they would release it on ps4 with a graphics upgrade.
an easy way to cheat the game is to camp the air craft carrier for money by sitting in one spot after killing the 4 missile launcers and the closest aircraft port. from what i can tell you also get a free life at 30k 100k 250k 400k 550k points, probably every 150k after 100k
Another easy way to cheat the game is any level you know where a hidden extra life is grab it and collect all the pow's possible. Then suicide and repeat. That's why I never used this pilot and always chose Greg.
For me it was when I was able to buy a turbo controller that I started rocking the daylights out of this game...after all these years it is still a favorite of mine to play...especially on a 60-inch screen!
I used to play this game all the time when SNES came out. Brings back memories. But as an adult and a member of the military, I am amused at things like Desert Carriers, unrealistic sized tanks, underground bases that airplanes can fly though. Project 4 must have a multi trillion dollar defense budget. Some of those weapon systems are pretty badass though. We need Mega Crush in real life.
There is a link between this game and the _Mega Man_ series: composer Manami Matsumae. She also composed for _1943: The Battle of Midway_ and _Legendary Wings_.
God mode switch flipped right before my eyes... very impressed. This was the game I always played and died quickly then it was onto something more to my skills like Mario Paint😂
Lag is a good thing in older games. Sure, it makes your character move slower as well, but it gives the player more time to react to what's happening, and allows for easier positioning to evade incoming obstacles. I honestly don't see why people complain about slow down in older games when it serves as an aid to the player.
Dayum you're good!! And I didn't realize how hard it was to kill the minks (the battleship). I was Greg Gates all the time though, never Mickey maybe he has a better firepower level up or something.
This is my long lost play through for anyone who wishes to know. I cant find the login details for this account but will be creating a similar one soon. For those who wish to know I recorded everything you see as it happens. I did however use a turbo controller and the famous snes slow down.
So I understand why the pros like Micky so much. Micky gains double the ammunition when he gets that secret extra ammo. 4 mega crushes is very helpful in defeating the end boss and also having the ability to shoot the special top gun and shoot at the same time is a must when you want to defeat the cave boss in hard mode. This guy is legit and a pro! I can almost beat the game in hard mode now. I've been studying this guy alot. thanks for the tips man. keep on making great vids!
Holy shit I just beat the cave boss in hard mode for the first time. I used Shin last time and I died because he can shoot the the two guns at the same time. Micky rocks!!!😂😂😂
I just beat the game in hard mode!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm crossing this off my bucket list. Thanks again man I can finally go to sleep now and brag about it tommorow to my brothers who could never get this far when we were young. now I'm the grand master. lol
Michael Vasquez try gamer mode bro! The sub level is night and day compared to hard mode. Like you're dodg ing bullets the whole time going thru small spaces and coming out surprised at what you pulled off.
I love this game so much! Reminds me of my childhood. Could never find it again tho. I would love when the game would slow down due to the number of enemies on screen. Always thought that was cool haha
Masterfully done sir! I think I had a hard time with this game because I wasn't as liberal with my special weapons as you were. I would always try to beat the first three levels without buying any weapons to try and save money.
For everyone who thinks that the shield "magically" comes back into existence after it's gone, he indeed has it the whole time once he picks it up, and the shield lasts until the player has taken 3 hits. The reason it looks like it disappears early is because this video is not at the full 60 fps, and the shield animation blinks at a fast rate so sometimes when watching footage at less than 60 fps it will look like the shield is not there.
Shin is indeed a guy. But they made him look so effeminate in this game it's really hard to tell if you don't already know. I was 10 when this game first came out and I thought Shin was a girl then too. It'd be some years before I stumbled across the Area 88 OVA episodes at my local Blockbuster and realized what the game was actually based on. It's weird, but while the SNES version has superior music, the character artwork in the arcade version is higher quality and more detailed. Saki (the map guy) looks a lot different in this version. Not enough hair flowing around...lol. Anyway, will always love this game. Now if only Nintendo would put it on the VC...
Not that I have an issue with it of course, but, I'm curious as to what made Capcom create an Area 88 game and the Tenchi wo Kurau games? Are both of the manga series popular in Japan?

Fond memories of the astronomically slow frame rate during heavy gunfire. And this soundtrack still totally holds up.
I still listen to the music, just beautiful

Manami Matsumae is a genius! I had the pleasure of making the song 'Dusktone' with her :)
I agree. Some of the best video game music I've heard in an SNES game.
Seems like a lot of Capcom games had consistently good music back then.

That darn battleship trips me up every time, real hard even with Napalm. I can only beat it with a level 6 shooter.
Not bad for an jet jock. Most people don't bother playing with Mickey, usually opting for Shin. Again, great job!

True, but referring to it as lag is just quicker, and simpler.
+Milk Carton - Yes it is and no it doesn't. Lag means "to fall behind" and was a term used long before the internet was a twinkle in ARPA's eye.
