This worked like a charm. Of course the placement still took good amount of thinking, careful planning, adjustment and improvising. But man!!! Just having this tool allowed for careful and proper load distribution so that you don’t bend anything. You are a genius!!! Million thanks!!!
I have a 2018 tri-glide and I went with the same washers but used a 1/2"x3" carriage bolt. The 1/2" bolt holds the first 2 washers perfectly centered. While mine did not slide in easily a slight tap with a small hammer seated the gaskets without deforming them. I used a user's comment looking at a shorter bolt and the 3" bolt gave me just enough room on the front cylinder to get it in and then tap it into place. This saved me a world of headaches.
DOOOOOOD! I'm so glad that I found this video. I just finished an exhaust install on my '08 Ultra Classic. I couldn't find the exact washers as listed but I got pretty close. I installed my tapered gaskets perfectly the first time since I took your advice. I can definitely see how it would be damned near impossible to get them in without damaging them without this tool. I would love to buy you a beer but since I can't a sub will have to do. Thanks a lot, brother!
Big Thumbs Up, worked like a dream. My gaskets were tapered on the inside, so I could only use the one washer @ 1 3/4 diameter. Also was used a little engine oil to coat the exhaust port. Slid right in. Thanks tons for sharing.
Awesome!! Thanks man, just took gasket to tractor supply and made up the jig, $1.64 out the door and worked perfect on my 2013 ultra after having exhaust ceramic coated
I built one of these this morning to install my new Cobra Slash-downs on my Low Rider. It worked amazingly well!! The gasket popped into place with a few light taps of a hammer. Seated perfectly. Genius!!!!!
I tried to Simply pushing the gasket in over 40 years of wrenching ase-certified pulling tractors motorcycles ATVs cars this is one of the best tips I ever received thank you
I made one for about $1.60 buying the stuff by the pound at Tractor supply...I used the exhaust flange on the tool to finish getting it installed flush. worked great!
Good idea, gave me the idea to use a large rubber stopper I have. The cone fits nicely on the stopper. Only problem is that my exhaust port measures 1.0895 while the gasket measures 1.0947 = no go. I'll kink the side a bit to get it in then press the gasket back out to opening.
Great hack...went out and purchased the items today. The rear cylinder gasket went in slick as snot. The front, not as easy because the frame and reflector got in the way. It started it enough though and pushed it in the rest of the way with no problem. I think I am going to make another "stubby model" for the next time. Thanks
Got to hand To you, it works like a charm. Only thing, I couldn’t find the 1 7/8 washer. No biggie, I bought a 2” attached everything to my drill press and filed the 2” to the correct size. The jig works awesome!!! Thanks
THANK YOU, THANK YOU THANK YOU.......but there was an improvement for my 2007 FX Softail Springer by lengthening the carriage bolt for the rear exhaust. I coupled two carrage bolts to 9" in length that gave me a more controlled angle & used an old cobblers hammer to gently tap it in....... Easier than last year......
Thanks a bunch for uploading this. I’ll be giving this a shot! I just got done ruining one of my new gaskets trying to install it without the right tools. Lol
I like to make my own special tools when I can. Bought a 96' Road King Police back in January. About got it road ready using used parts and some home made tools.
I went to Home Depot and I found the carriage bolt but couldn’t find all the washers. And the Home Depot customer service is horrible in cleveland. I’m going to try Lowe’s tomorrow. Thanks for showing this trick
Where did you find the 1 3/4 x & 1 7/8th x 1/2 Washers? Part numbers at what stores? Every Box store near me in Illinois did not carry them! Help others as I wasted a entire day driving all over. Autozone loand tools for free. I ended up getting a wheel bearing race installer kit on loan and used the 50mm die to easily install the Gasket by hand. Took me much longer to wait in line to get the tool kit then it was to install it.
Never owned a Harley before in my life and just purchased a custom chopper with a EVO motor..never owned a harley and was working on the exhaust the other day...studs were jacked up..so I pulled the pipe out and said to myself..what do we have here. It looked like someone had tried to "wrap" the exhaust and the remains were around the cylinder hole..so I proceeded to yank that biotch out only to find out later, that was the exhaust gasket..never seen one before like that ..but now I know..and knowing is half the battle......wait for it.
Looks awesome but can’t find 1/2 x 1-3/4 or 1/2 x 1-7/8 washers anywhere! Went to 3 hardware stores as well as home depot today only came back with 1/2 x 1-1/2 washer, bolt, and nut ... :(
I've been trying for months to find a 1 7/8" od flat washer in any size id. They must be stored with the unicorn tears because Lowe's, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Fastenal and all of the local small hardware stores don't stock it. They have 1 1/2", 1 3/4" and 2" but NO 1 7/8" flat (or fender) washers. Are you sure that you are using a 1 7/8" od washer?
Only problem I have is that Home Depot, Lowes, and Ace Hardware don’t carry washers that are 1 7/8 and 1 3/4. I made one out of what I could find (a 2” washer).
Hey Tony ! Great info, Im about to do an exhaust wrap on my 2013 Iron and also Ill try to find the source of some chirping sound my bike makes mostly on idle and deceleration... Do I need to get 2 or 4 exhaust gaskets for the job? I dont know if the stock cross-over tube thing has gaskets too LOL. As always thanks for your help man!
Same one, stock exhaust, I bought the bike with stock baffles removed, sounds loud enough for now. I mainly want to the rid of the chirping sound which breaks my balls, and since Ill have the whole thing out Ill also paint the cross-over tube (its all rusty because the previous owner had it in his garden while using V&H Short Shots) and replace the gaskets of course. Thanks bro
If you put the gasket in the freezer overnight, it will have a slightly smaller diameter, until it warms up, of course, which will make it easier to seat, but you gotta seat the seal right away, or you just wasted your time. It definitely helps.
Is there a reason you went with the 3/8 inch carriage bolt instead of a 1/2 inch carriage bolt? I noticed you said all the washers were 1/2 inch inside diameter.
You don't need all of this shit. Just get some fine sand paper and smooth out the exhaust port... remove any debris or crap stuck to it. Wipe it out with a rag. Then, start evenly inserting your new gasket with your fingers... press it in gradually and uniformly all around with your thumb. Takes about 10 minutes to do it, plus you won't F up the edges of your expensive new gaskets using this tool with sharp edges.
I wish you would have showed us how it inserted the gasket in real time. Sound great but a well rounded instructional video will always shows expected results.
Your is the best how to i looked at quick and simple the other jerk offs waffle to must thank you very much your FANTABULOUS GREAT MATE from big gaz from australia
I bought new pipes and when I took the old ones off I started removing the old gaskets. The front was a breeze but the rear was completely destroyed. I am having a terrible time trying to get the peaces out and the surface for the new gasket is terrible. Anyone ever had to deal with this?
I’m trying this! Had to replace the gaskets on my 2019 Sportster and it’s an absolute nightmare. The fit is too tight and the gaskets are so soft they fall apart if you’re not very careful.
This worked like a charm. Of course the placement still took good amount of thinking, careful planning, adjustment and improvising. But man!!! Just having this tool allowed for careful and proper load distribution so that you don’t bend anything.

great improvement on a great idea... tks
What washers did you end up using because home depot doesn't carry all listed here.
Thank for this. Lol. I was trying over and over to get it in place with no luck. This tool did it perfectly!
Tks so much for taking the time to do this...great help in installing these gaskets..Tks

Glad it helped👊👊

Brother thank you so much for this.I never had a problem till today and your tip helped me and worked as fast as you said. 😊

Glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching.
Yeah till you try and locate the washers. Big Fail!
Just what I needed! Worked perfectly. So good in fact I had to look twice to make sure it was in right. Thx
Man O Man! For under five bucks... 4 or 5 light taps with my mallet. Your a genius!
Thank you so much for sharing this on UA-cam.
Glad it worked out👊

my home depot doesnt even have these big size washers.but thank you for sharing. Great idea.
mine either! tractor supply?
Excellent home made tool. Made one myself last night and did this exact job. Worked perfectly. Thank you!!
Got to hand To you, it works like a charm. Only thing, I couldn’t find the 1 7/8 washer. No biggie, I bought a 2” attached everything to my drill press and filed the 2” to the correct size.

A very helpful tip and great job on the videos. :)

Thank you! Great tool.
Hey thanks for tip. Made my own a little different. Put 1 washer at the end. Tool goes flush with gasket. Right against the engine.
+mlunden11 no problem at all, setting those gaskets are a real pain.
Now that’s as handy as a pocket on a shirt. Very useful.. thank you
Thanks John, glad it was helpful
Thanks Tony. Great home made tool.
Glad it helped!
I like to make my own special tools when I can. Bought a 96' Road King Police back in January. About got it road ready using used parts and some home made tools.
Nice, post up some pics I love that stuff!
Man I appreciate this video more than you know. Thanks for the tip🤙🤙
It works, I seen the video got the stuff and it works just fine
I went to Home Depot and I found the carriage bolt but couldn’t find all the washers. And the Home Depot customer service is horrible in cleveland. I’m going to try Lowe’s tomorrow. Thanks for showing this trick
Thanks for watching Jim.
CANNOT FIND 1 3/4 or an 1 7/8 washer. Any idea where I can find them?
Great hack, thanks Tony
good video. i think i trashed my new gaskets trying to install. will try again with this tool
Worked perfect! Thanks for the tip.

glad I found this
Awesome tool worked perfectly
Glad it helped
Cool Tips, going to give this a try.
Very Cool ..... I see on another Vid a guy suggests using Copper Silicone high temp gasket sealant. Is that necessary ?
Tried it, worked great.. thx
No hardware store around me carry 1 1/2, 1 3/4 n 1 7/8 washers. Where can I find washers for this DIY tool
Only for Sportster? What about a 98 Evo?
I bought these exact parts from Home Depot the 1 3/4 washers are to big for the gasket. Did they change the gasket size for different year Harley’s?
How tight do you torque the exhaust bolts down M8
No such washers at Home Depot. Appreciate the video but please check your OD dimensions and correct your parts list. Thanks
some person likes the flat gasket, so I bought my Vance and hines shortshots staggered pipes, will it work.
Thanks! Had no idea!
Wow thank you

Super cool Thanks

Will this work on a 2016 Forty-Eight? Dealership want to replace it for $200. Thought of trying this at home.
Should work just fine.
Thank you sir
I use the thumb.
Hmm, make me wonder what's up with my '93 FLSTC 80ci? I never have a problem putting in exhaust gaskets as they just slip right into place....
Cool, I will try it tomorrow, Thanks
Thanks for watching
That's freakin' brilliant.
+Great Egret thank you
Thanks a million

I ones I found are 1 7/8 od. I made this video 2 year ago things might have changed thinking 2 od would work fine.
Lifesaver !
Only problem I have is that Home Depot, Lowes, and Ace Hardware don’t carry washers that are 1 7/8 and 1 3/4. I made one out of what I could find (a 2” washer).
That's true. I looked everywhere also
Friend of mine Jesse came up with this idea about 7 years ago.. he used a 1/2-inch carriage bolt.
Use copper slip to ease it in.. sorted
Rockin!
thanks
You will 2 head gaskets and 2 for the crossover. What kind of exhaust are you going with?
Same one, stock exhaust, I bought the bike with stock baffles removed, sounds loud enough for now. I mainly want to the rid of the chirping sound which breaks my balls, and since Ill have the whole thing out Ill also paint the cross-over tube (its all rusty because the previous owner had it in his garden while using V&H Short Shots) and replace the gaskets of course. What is the Actual size of the washers? If you remember thanks
He says it in the video
3/8 carriage bolt
2x1 3/4 washers
1x1 7/8 washer
1x1 1/2 washer
3/8 nut
If you put the gasket in the freezer overnight, it will have a slightly smaller diameter, until it warms up, of course, which will make it easier to seat, but you gotta seat the seal right away, or you just wasted your time. It definitely helps.
Thanks bro.
Is there a reason you went with the 3/8 inch carriage bolt instead of a 1/2 inch carriage bolt? I noticed you said all the washers were 1/2 inch inside diameter.
The 3/8 gives me alittle room to adjust the washers on the bolt.
@@TonysGarage Oh ok i thought it might have been to fit over the square end of the carriage bolt but wasn't sure.
@@TonysGarage thanks I'm going to have to find them somewhere else my home depot didn't have the 1-3/4 or 1-7/8 washers
Went to ace, lowes and HD. Nobody has the washers 😩 oh well
You can put them in the freezer over night and they will slide right in.
Totally Awesome.
Thanks Mike. It works great!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
You don't need all of this shit. Just get some fine sand paper and smooth out the exhaust port... remove any debris or crap stuck to it. Wipe it out with a rag.

Takes about 10 minutes to do it, plus you won't F up the edges of your expensive new gaskets using this tool with sharp edges.
I've done it numerous times on all different Harleys, without giving up.
May cuss a bit, but never gave up and it always comes out great.
BS, stop lying.
Stop lying already.
Nobody wants to hear your pretend stuff.
You're talking to your bathroom mirror again tonight there crazy.
I bet your parents are proud of how you came out, huh?
JCTwatWaffle is the real deal, BMX wheelie-popping, low brow momma's boy closet case, that everybody loves to make fun of.
I wish you would have showed us how it inserted the gasket in real time. Sound great but a well rounded instructional video will always shows expected results.
Can’t please everyone all the time. Be happy he shared this and stop whining. He didn’t have to show you shit
Do some work for yourself lol. I came back to subscribe and give this guy a proper thanks!
These washers are non-existent at Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Ace Hardware. Where did you get them?
This video is about 4 or 5 years old. I did buy everything from home depot.
Anyone ever had to deal with this?
thank you
Glad it helped. Thanks for watching!!!
Why go through all this when you can simply push the gasket in with your fingers?
Never had much luck doing that.
I sure have. It was easy to do on my 2007 Fat Boy.
I have done it and it can be difficult I’am sure some maybe easier.
I have done it several times, and yes it can be very difficult if you, push to hard
because it doesnt work. too tight
Jesse flores on YT did this 9yrs ago & he shows you how to install it on the motor
I’m trying this! Had to replace the gaskets on my 2019 Sportster and it’s an absolute nightmare. The fit is too tight and the gaskets are so soft they fall apart if you’re not very careful.
👍
Could’ve used this today
Home depot told me they dont carry washers this big. Help
hell ya!
You saved me!
Thanks
Glad it helped!
My home depot dont have 7/8 washer. Only 1 inch and I think that's too big
I am talking about the outside diameter not the inner
Great idea. Get a patent.
You should make and sell these
Just wanted to say this tip works slicker than shit.
Please, where were you able to locate the washers in those sizes?
🎉🙌🏻💯
You can put them in the freezer over night and they will slide right in. I just saved you 3 bucks.
Never had much luck with that. Plus I don’t have the patience🤣😂
Man, 3 hardware stores later, still no 1-7/8” washer.
KISS. Keep it simple stupid. Great, easy fix.
fucking perfect 👌 thank you
Those washers did not exist near me
Umm.
You can put it in with fingers.
If you need a tool then there is an issue .
Old gastet or rust.
Got your whining hanging Jim.
For less than $30 I’d rather buy a tool that machine made for there is no doubt room for misalignment
