    I’m a Grandmother raising an Autistic child for 10 years now. We have been trying so hard to navigate this winding road of therapies & techniques only to find ourselves frustrated with the run around by insurance companies and the “your doing it wrong” to the point of hopelessness. I’ve learned more on UA-cam than anywhere we’ve gone to for help and understanding. All we’ve ever wanted was help for our Grandson so that he has a chance at life. I’m so thankful that you and so many others share what you know and how we can help our children! Blessings ~

    I wish you had been my mother. I’m 26 and just finding out that my entire life has been one sensory overload after another. My parents never helped. In fact, they just assumed I hate to be touched. So I wasn’t even touched like a normal kid. I’m so glad parents like you exist

      Oh no! I am so sorry! But thank you!
      It is very frustrating to be parent not knowing what to do and not understanding what your child is going through. I still struggle with my kids. I do hope you find comfort, it must of been really hard growing up not understanding what was going on. 😢

      @@LivingWithEve I am 35 and am in tears reading this comment. I have several letter diagnoses, I say CDO(in alphabetical order like it's supposed to be), depression, GAD, PTSD, LMNOP ( LOL) and I be learned about deep pressure stimulation two days ago while watching a video about shibari. When I was little under 5 years old, I liked to be rolled up in a sleeping bag and I would beg my dad or uncle or cousin or whoever was around to put me in there. I also would take this piece of sesame street pillowcase that became my lovie and wrap up my arm or leg like I was in a cast. I'm at peace finally understanding another little piece of the puzzle that is my brain. Thank you ❣️

He can’t stay still has so much energy and always wants to touch everything, now that am aware of this i can work with him and understand him better. Too bad others don’t understand it 😢

      I was so concerned that telling my child that she has SPD and autism would "label" her I didn't even want to tell her. It turned out to be a good idea to tell her and like she said not focus on it. Because she asked later on if something was wrong with her. I just said you remember you have SPD and told her that God just made her brain different he didn't make it wrong.

    I just found out yesterday my kiddo has spd. She's 7. I've always just thought she was naughty, and it was my bad parenting. I thought I was too soft and too many choices. I'm now changing my parenting. And focusing on her. I'm going though videos ATM for advice. I do not want her to feel 💩 about who she is. I want her to be the best she can be and most important HAPPY. Great video, and great start off. Thank you.

I had an occupational therapist who taught me 2 lessons, and after a couple months of excercises I was brushing my teeth correctly and I could hold cold drinks, and none of the stuff really bothered me.

    I recently have connected the dots and I may have hypersensitivity. It was a heavy weight off my chest to realize I wasn’t crazy and instead just dealing with hypersensitivity meltdowns on a regular basis. Since having a name for it I’ve been doing research on how to deal with it better but everything I can find is for parents of young children. Regardless, having a name for my issues is really helpful because it makes me feel qualified.

      I get it! The one thing I like about “labeling” (actually the only, because I hate labeling), is that is gives people who are guiding the child an understanding of what is going on and tips on how to manage it. It also gives parents piece of mind knowing their is someone to help.

    Omg I just love you so much right now. You have NO IDEA HOW YOUR VIDEO HELPED ME.
    A little bit about my situation : I am a full time nanny who’s been working with kids for over 5 years now. Been in and out daycare and preschool centers but now working with this wonderful family who have 2 awesome kids. M is 3 and J is 15months. I’m having a challenging moment with J. Mom and I think both kids might have some sensory issue and I’m trying to find some answers online. I’m struggling a lot. I went home crying a lot of times but never gave up on helping them. J loves to play, he is a cuddle bug but omg, he won’t sit still, and CRIES and yells over little things such as changing diaper, transitioning from one activity to another. It’s been hard for me and I def don’t want to quit, I want to help them. Your video was amazing to me. It opened my eyes, I love the idea of the vibrating pillow and HE LOVES WHEN I RUB HIS HEAD. Such great tips. Can’t wait to watch the other videos. Please please if you have any idea how I can approach mom and tell things without giving the idea that I’m assuming anything or giving any diagnose on his kid I will appreciate very very much. Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon.

    • @LivingWithEve
      @LivingWithEve  4 роки тому +1

      Oh my stars, thank you!!❤️ It’s so hard to talk to Mom about concerns you have but it’s so important. Maybe show her somehow that you are coming alongside her in helping her son? That might make it easier for you. Or maybe start with questions like “Does he get upset for you when you change his diaper.” To really engage a conversation. I really think most kiddos have sensory issues. I have sensory issues! And they change through their age too. It’s such a complex topic. I just purchased a book called “Sensational Kids” and I’m plowing thorough it. I’m planning on going through some tips on this soon. Right now I have been focusing on ADHD, but a lot of ADHD, well most, have sensory issues. So do kids on the autism spectrum and Downs. I’ll probably switch over to these topics sooner now. My channel has been a mix match of a lot of things but recently (this year) I have really been focusing in on the parenting of special needs since I’m in the middle of it and those seem to be my most popular videos. (I have a few already made that are off topic but after that I’m going to really focus on those videos).
      One thing Naomi’s therapist had me do was rub her feet whenever I had free time. This is when she was a baby since feet sensitivity is very common. I would do it with a wash cloth or textured ball. Same with head rubbing. Doing it as a very soft gentle movement. Too hard does nothing for them. Anything to desensitize. We also let her play with a toothbrush before she brushes her teeth to desensitize so that time will go smoother. Occupational Therapy has been amazing for my kids because they have a gift of knowing what your kids need and give you a ton of tools to over come them. Insurance paid for ours. Maybe Mom can look into it?
      Let me know if there is anything else. Keep in touch!

You are right we could not get an IEP for sensory but we were able to get one for speech. He still has sensory hickups now & than. But with my son he wasn't diagnosed with anything. So sometimes a child doesnt have to have a illness for sensory issues.

    Hi, found you from the lunch collab. I am a mom of 2 (aspergers/hEDS/SPD/VPD and Autism/SPD/APD/VPD/possible hEDS).
    One is a sensory seeker and the other is mainly an avoider with some need needed sensory input.
    We have lots of soft blankets, a trampoline indoors, huge Costco bear, play tent, kinetic sand, squish hand toys, scooters, water table, rocking chair, lots of pillows, yoga mats and dvds, pool, sensory lights, music, piano, and used to have a ball pit.
    Oh and 2 therapy shih tzus 😊
    We did floor time therapy that was very sensory based. Also private ot and pt.
    Our biggest struggle is all the on-line time. It has been causing seizures. So our kids IEP teams have come up with some ways to help with accommodations and I bought blue light blocking glasses for both.

    I had a little boy in my children's church class that was totally fine if I was rubbing his head. I sat him beside me during the lesson, I stayed by him at the table, etc. If I needed to stop rubbing his head, a few minutes later, he would be in some random place in the room turning a flip or climbing on something. Back then, we had never heard of these processing issues that are seemingly ubiquitous today.

I tried gymnastics but he wasn’t into it. I found that I have to let him move to do school work. He needs to bounce, roll, move to concentrate. I’m stealing the head rub!!!!!

      Living With Eve I was thinking about trying a bounce ball as a seat and a monkey balance board. He is most happy when I give him solo bedtime snuggles and we chat. He rubs my face and arm and I run his back if he wants. He seems most content then and talks me up.

      My son is the best cuddler as well. He has to rub my skin. Mostly my belly when he’s relaxing or tired. My arms he likes to rub up and down and my face. He has to be touching me all the time. Loves to snuggle.

    We thought my son may be hyposensitive. But now I think he’s just a chronic toe walker because of a muscle issue.
    In my state, my sister is an OT for the school district and spd doesn’t automatically qualify you for an IEP but if spd dramatically affects academics they could get one. But you could also get a document from the pediatrician to receive tools (like the bouncy chair, vibrating seat, etc.) during school.

    • @LivingWithEve
      @LivingWithEve  5 років тому

      Yes. I think it will eventually get to the point where IEPs are issued. However I know that SPD is connected to other Conditions that IEPs cover. Like ADHD, Autism, ect...
      I was a toe walker, still am. My Mom justified it by putting me in ballet, which I excelled at. It never corrected the problem though. There are only a few positions I can’t be in without lifting my heals and it really no big deal. However, I still get made fun of... a lot.

    This was a very informative video. I'm just learning about sensory because my son who is almost 2, has the same sensory things as your son. We recently started Therapy for it as well. Also are on a waiting list for speech. The only thing he actually says is momma and he makes noises. He isn't able to communicate what so ever tho. We believe he has ASD. And are waiting for that in a month or two. He is my 3rd child, first son. Before we knew about any of this we planned to have another child so he would have a sibling closer in age, (b.c both his sisters are 5yrs & 7yrs older than him) so I just had my 4th child (&last😊) baby boy last month. But I'm so concerned and overwhelmed b.c I want to make sure I'm doing everything I need/should be doing for him. And also wondering if my baby boy will have any of the same things as my other boy. Sorry I know it's alot. Felt good to tell someone honestly.

    My son is exactly as you described your son as a toddler (mine are 20 months). He is speech delayed along with his sister (she is catching up be he only has a few words he says very sparsley, looooots of babbling trying to talk) and are in speech therapy (started a month ago). The therapist told me this past week Eren may have Spd but she wants to give it a few more sessions to weed out the novelty of newness since hes lived in lockdown for a year. We may get referred to an OT for an eval. Which I am more than happy to do and get him whatever he needs.
    Question: was your son speech delayed at all? Anyone else in the comments have this experience? He understands what we say, we just have to get his attention first.
    Note: ADHD (could be spd due to the newness of the diagnosis) runs on my husbands side heavily.
    I think its really easy as a ftp to jump to autism but no doctor so far things this is the case and he just needs constant stimulation. Because he makes good eye contact and is very social especially with his twin sister.

    • @LivingWithEve
      @LivingWithEve  3 роки тому +1

      He was not speech delayed, he was actually advanced in pretty much everything. But SPD shows itself differently in each child. Alot of kids with ADHD have SPD, they got hand in hand. Same with Autism. Some kids only have SPD.
      Good luck in your situation. Many prayers too.

      We are on the same boat. My son 2 years cant speak and not getting much help from speech therapy. We and most professionals cant figure out exactly whats wrong with him. He breastfeed multiple times during night since birth till date. He drives my wife nuts looking him after. She even can't go to bathroom easily cuz of his clinging behavior. He has marked separation anxiety and wants mother in front of him all the time. His tantrums are constant and over small things. But what most worries us is his inability to speak. To be honest we are totally confused as how we should approach towards managing his problems.

  • @shazebabrar197
    @shazebabrar197 2 роки тому +1

    My 2 years son has all signs of spd. Believe me its a sigh of relief when you compare it with possibility of asd lingering on in your mind especially when you know your child does not speak at a age of 2. In my case speech therapy is not working, should we switch to another therapist as suggested by someone. Or its a part of problem which will go away hopefully with time. Kindly share your expert opinion on this. And as he breastfeed multiple times during night time how should we approach with this problem. We want him to switch to formula feed but he throws away bottle whenever we tried. My wife is diabetic and she has no energy left after attending to his constant needs. He doesn't even allow her to go to a bathroom and wants her presence all the time.

      What the OT has told us, if we want them to get use to it, be consistent and keep doing it. So if she pulls it out, put it back in. Eventually she'll get to use to it. That's the hope.

      Consistency. It’s never to early to start putting him in time out, redirecting (getting him involved in another activity or showing him how to act appropriately), or even just telling him no, nice hands. However, you may want to speak to your pediatrician as well. Occupational therapy has ended up being a huge blessing, especially since you have a professional working with you and him on a weekly basis.
