We are Katja, Björn and Balthazar. This video is a tour of our van Beelzebus, a Mercedes-Benz 508D from 1984, that we filmed in northern Norway 2 months ago. It is our first UA-cam video and we hope you guys like it.
You may know us from our Instagram account @Beelzebus. Here's a short story for those of you who don't know us:
It took us about one and a half year to renovate and sell our house, quit our jobs, make all our affairs in order and about 6 full months of that time we spent restoring Beelzebus. We hit the road in July 2019. There are still some things that we are planning to change/ build that we'll be sharing with you here. But after many months of hard work we felt that we needed some time to recuperate so once it was possible to move in into our van we started living in it full-time.
Now when we are finally feeling well-rested we'll be making many more videos about our build, life on the road, our furry companion Balthazar and also we are planning to start one more restoration project that we'll be sharing here and on our Instagram.
Many people asked us where we ordered our LED lights and sunvisor from.
Most of the lights we ordered from www.ljusgiganten.se and the sun visor from www.cornett.de. The underglow LED loop was ordered from www.crazyride.se. Just let us know if you have any more questions.

a little late to this tour but this is truly one of the most unique conversions imo (& i’ve seen countless) and the exterior was absolutely stunning
Thank you so so much for you kind words. This really means a lot! We felt like we had to take so many very fast decisions when we were building the interior, so we still sometimes wonder if we could have made some things different. But all in all, since Balthazar's comfort was our priority, we couldn't have done that much different back then anyway. By the way, later on we've added an underfloor shower under Balthazar's bed. We demonstrate it in our Winter Wonderland video, if you'd like to see it. :)

Absolutely love this build the exterior is sick love the underglow lighting in fact there is nothing I would change on the outside and I would of only altered the inside to suit my needs. And the best part is those engines will just keep going forever. The worst thing about these vans in the UK is RUST!! they all seem to suffer from it bad.

Kindred souls, lovers of gentle giants. Balthazar, your Irish Wolfhound (right?) looks great. He needs his own videos. I grew up with Great Danes, Dingus was 190, and Strider was 160. Lapdogs! Great build BTW, the doggy table is genius.

The 508D has one of if not the best chassis and engine ever built these things are now very sought after , europe prices recently rocketed

I LOVE LOVE LOVE your beautiful dog!!! I have a 145 lb Mastiff. It’s inspiring to see a van can accommodate a large canine. Your van is amazing

A genius design! I'm guessing we can't get this van in the US? It's perfect. It truly feels to me like a tiny house on wheels. Lots of storage, windows to bring in the light, large seating area that turns into a bed, aesthetically pleasing inside and out, and a large area for your dog and his bowls. Love it.

Beelzebus - pun on Beelzebub, a name for Satan - appropriate for the red belly lights. Very nice!
Balthazar, is the name of an ancient Babylonian king (modern Iraq) Belshezzar, who was killed because he was too big for his boots (and did not respect God). Good name for this big hairy Irish Wolfhound.
The name Beelzebub is interesting. It comes from the Canaanite god Ba'al + Zebul or Lord of the (heavenly) dwelling. It was satirized by the Israelites as Ba'al Zebub or Lord of the Flies. Later in Christian theology, Beelzebub was made into a demon of Hell. Initially a god then demoted to demon. The name however, is very Middle Eastern with an Iraqi flavor.
The name of the Babylonian King Belshazzar was disgraced, then found favor again as one of the Magi, or Wise Men, called Balthazar.
Your van is beautiful inside and out. Very good use of space, superb cabinet work, and I like the small touches like the dog bowl raised holder table and the kitchen mosaics. Really like your roof rack and the additional light bar and side/ back lights. So very smart to do that. The sun visor is very useful for a Class A bus windshield. I have a Class C with an overhanging cab bed, so I don't need one, but you sure do! By the way, the LED light bars are about $400 each on your Danish website, but only $52 - $100 on Amazon in the US. Might buy them here. They all come from China anyway.

I converted a similar size van back in the mid '70's, a Hanomag. It got 22 mpg, diesel of course. Mine is the only Hog I've ever seen in the USA, I have no idea how it ended up over here. We lived in it full time for two years, it was a great rig. Now I live on 40 acres, and have a dog that weighs 10 pounds, kind of the opposite of your dog's situation!
Coolers! the Hanomag F20 or the truck version?22 mpg is less than Beelzebus takes 👍 we are around 0.38 gallons per 10km.
Who knows how it got there? We have heard that sometimes people from the early Dakar competitions brought vehicles with them home maybe that´s a possibility? ha ha ha yeah! wish Balthazar was 10 pounds! then it would be WAY more practical 😂😂
Whenever I see van life people with a dog it's always a huge bear like creature - it's never a small dog you can fit in the glove box.
ok well most van dwellers we have seen so far have small dogs 😉

Nice people, well spoken, excellent work (elec/design/woodwork/metal work/videography), and great woof. We had a similarly sized dog, who chased several burglars out of our house about 35 years ago when we were on holiday, and one of them was so petrified that he ran right through a concrete panel wall. That broken panel wall had a policeman sitting on a chair next to it when we came back, and if I didnt see it, talk to the policeman, and see our proud of himself dog, I would never believe it. The replacement panels are visible on google earth even today, and if this wasnt the internet with many trolls, I'd print the address here. His name was Scruffy. He was eventually poisoned by future burglars and fell into our swimming pool and drowned, weak through poison as he was. It was beyond heartbreaking. Another reason I am fond of animal people and mostly despise the rest. Great work Beezlebus.

Katja used to work with car wrapping, and since we wanted to have our own unique design, we decided to do everything ourselves at Katja’s former job.:) You can probably get help both with creating your own design and fitting it specifically to your van as well as with application at any car wrapping firm.😀

Awesome bus very well put together, greetings from Palm coast fl U.S.A as a kid in South America in nazca Perù I remember seeing that type of buses use for tourists for a company called Vista tours nothing but Mercedes-Benz in their fleet

To answer someone below, you can get those van in the USA, but only as a used one of course. I just paid about $6k to have mine (2006) repainted and it isn't nearly as nice as yours. Ah well. With all that work, I hope you two enjoy it for years.
It is very expensive to have them repainted but luckily we did all the prep work ourselves and know a guy who works with painting vehicles 😉

Thank you Andre! we honestly don´t know exactly because it was a friend of ours how did the paintjob and he made his own mix from an industrial type rim colour that´s supposed to be a bit thougher than regular color and all we know is that he had put some black into the metallic grey to tone in darker. But even though we might have problems matching the exact colour later for touch ups we´re really happy with how it turned out.😀
very nice bus! but how are the emission laws in Scandinavia? for example in the Netherlands cars of a certain age can not enter some city centers anymore. you have a diesel bus from 1984, can you still go everywhere? I really like your bus :)

In most of Europe if the vehicle is an old-timer 30 years or older it´s excluded from certain
restrictions and bans or sometimes you have to be part of an motor club of any kind to get an special sticker for your vehicle and then you are allowed even in the new "green-zones" no matter the weight or fuel type. In Sweden if you´re vehicle is older then 50 years like our other project then you don´t even have to go to the vehicle inspection after you passed it once of course 😉🤘
Also in Sweden if your car is older than 30 years they do not check your emission levels any more! which is very weird 😂

Thank you 😀 The 508D is very nice that´s actually a big reason why we choose it 😉 Yes we knew it´s usually called Düdo in Germany, it was a little confusing in the beginning 😅 Beelzebus weigh in at 4,500kg fully loaded 🤗 so we had to take a C-license for trucks to be able to drive it legally 👍

hi, how much battery and solar power do you have? and does it run the 12volt fridge ok? ive got a gas fridge at the moment but would prefer one that runs on electric

I hat One 20 years Ago miss it Today.. I hat problem back then with total over 3500 kg so it can not park in citys only buspark ..

it´s on a truck C licens
We are exactly under 6m long so usually we fly under the radar as a RV like some of the new Hymers that´s above 3500 kg

I started to restore 406d 1970 MB, and its a total rust bucked i bet yours was also, or has it been in good condition? Damn your van looks so nice i am really impressed. If u ever decide to travel true Slovenia, Hit me up !
Awesome! good decision 😃👍 Yeah ours was super rusty also two of the roof beams was completely rusted of and the roof was leaking everywhere 😭 but luckily there is welding machines in the world 😃 I taught yourself how to weld MIG,
Right now i´m working on the stainless steel frame for the hatch over the shower tray and i´m learning to weld with a TIG to step things up a notch 😉😃
Where do you have the most rust problems? do you also plan on welding it yourself?
I think that the sheet metal was the hardest to weld properly without warping it 😅
@@Beelzebus Oh nice, yes im also in the same possition ill have to learn it my self since the small town i live in im one of the 3 that have 3meter high garage to fit in the van :D the wors its on the stairs for the driver and passanger, and i also have half way rusted tru the front beams the one that splits the small windov and front doors :( wow roof u say, i guess im lucky there :D do you have some fotage frome the velding and restoring for us?

@@matevzjereb288 Ok for the thin metal i can recommend MIG welder, ok well if its not to bad on the beams at least they are easier to weld because they´re thicker ;). we also had allot of rust around the front windows :( not so fun. Very nice. About the table. You can cut out an exact duplicate, place on top of the original one with hinges that you can fold out twice the size when needed. You would just have to figure out some support legs when folded out. Gd luck, be safe.

Thanks! We did all the pre-paint jobs like welding grinding etc. But a friend of ours who work with painting cars painted it for us. 🙂

Got a question about your Solar setup. You said you had 2x330wp LG panels, but i saw a Victron 100/30 solar inverter. This one caps out at 440w, so you have a huge amount of clipping (more solar then your inverter knows how to handle). any reason you didnt choose the 100/50 which caps at 700w? I'm looking to make my own solar setup, so any advice will help
Hi! Good question! thats what the company who designed our system recommended, we do run them on 24V to the charger though,
Not sure if its the reason for the 100/30 inverter or not but thats how they said it should be? maybe we could get even more power out of them then? if we change to a bigger inverter? ill send an email to the contact guy at the company and ask just in case 😉

@@Beelzebus Running it on 24v fixes the whole issue, on 24v the inverter has a 880w cap so then it should be fine.
the only disadvantage i can see is that if the rest of your system runs 12v you require a second inverter (from 24v to 12v) which also has some system losses.
I do residential solar as a living, and having some trouble translating that to Battery solar.
How big is your 24v to 12v inverter? I wasnt expecting that to be a profitable difference over a larger solar inverter, but maybe it is, which is good to know.
@@Okkebeltman But we charge the 12V battery bank with the solar inverter so we only have 12V and inverter to 230V :) but now after the build we would have gone for all 24V system instead because of the less loss ;)
