Rory Gallaghers fender Stratocaster, bought in Ireland in 1961 goes under the hammer next week in Sotheby's London, expected to make 1 and a half million pounds, I predict 2 million pounds. 2.5 million u.s. Dollars.
I also wonder where Brian Jones would have been on a list, had he not died very young, a guitarist, who played slide guitar, rhythm and lead guitar, but was also a multi instrumentalist, love the early rolling Stones
What is blatantly missing is two of the best guitarists I've ever had the pleasure of watching live, namely Joe Bonamassa and Kenny Wayne Shepherd (check out his version of Voodoo Child). I'd also throw on the list, Derek Trucks, undoubtedly the best slide guitarist in the world (check out his version of The Sky is Crying...it will make YOU cry)
Better to say these are YOUR favorite guitarists. Or Favorite ROCK Guitar Players. Any list that doesn’t include Segovia, Roy Clark - who was maestro of every stringed instrument, Charlie Christian - who fed Benny Goodman 40 minutes of unique, improvised, perfect riffs in his audition fresh off the plane from OKC when he was only 23, who died too young at 25, but left an amazing legacy on vinyl, Mississippi John Hurt - God’s metronome, Johnny Winter, Doc Watson and his son Merle, John Williams, Gary Moore, Django, Albert Collins, Scotty Moore, Chet Atkins, Les Paul, Hubert Sumlin, David Bromberg, Wes Montgomery, Luther Johnson, Joe Bonamassa and even more I haven’t mentioned or don’t even know of. Even Bob Dylan, a great guitarist in his own right, admitted that he didn’t like playing Memphis because even Garbage Collectors there could play circles around the world’s best guitar players. There are more great guitar players than you can even dream about in your lists. But when you miss the ONE, that even the greatest guitar players called the Humbler, when you don’t even mention Danny Gatton, you prove you don’t know what you are talking about. You’re only making a mix. So don’t talk about Greatest, just talk about your favorites.
Without even reading the list and all the comments (which I will do after I post) I’m betting that “ The Ventures “ who created most of the modern electric quitar components of today are not even mentioned. And how many albums they have with music to die for.
List should have been called ‘My favourite popular rock guitarists of all time’. I would probably have about 8 of them if I was doing a greatest guitarist list
@@FactsVerse Thanks for the reply. Greatest ever guitarist I’d have to be predictable and say Shawn Lane. My favourite rock god would be Slash. Favourite popular rock guitarist I’ve always liked Clapton. Favourite acoustic guitarist probably someone like Mike Dawes. It’s all very much a personal preference as you know
Maybe not the most influential but definitley the most gifted and technically precise guitar musicians that have been left out are Steve Morse and Joe Satriani
I always admired all these guitarits, but I also love Paul Simon's classical guitar playing, with simon and garfunkle, also a great songwriter, he was an accomplished guitarist
My top 5: 5. Jeff Beck 4. David Gilmour 3. Steve Howe 2. Jan Akkerman 1. Ritchie Blackmore Blackmore is much more influential that many give him credit for. His influence on what would become known as neoclassical is unquestionable. He plays many styles superbly. Plus he developed techniques. Jan Akkerman is criminally overlooked. Steve Howe is a superb guitarist who is excellent in many styles. To round out my top 10: Steve Hackett, John Petrucci, Steve Morse, Uli von Roth, Yngwie Malmsteen Honorable mentions: Steve Vai, SRV, Zappa From Jazz/Fusion: John McLaughlin, Al Dimeola, Pat Metheny Let's also mention Roy Clark - wow, superb musician.
Probably should be titled greatest "classic rock" guitarists of all time. It's a good list, definitely some of the most influential and successful classic rock guitarists though a few holes, Richie Blackmore, Joe Perry, Alvin Lee, The Edge....
For me, this is a perfect or near perfect list of guitarists. Music, transcends race, where you come from, everything. I knew Jimi Hendrix would be number one, but I am glad that the older guitarists such as BB, King, and Chuck Berry were on this list. But, who is greatest can be subjective.
Yet again the title should be corrected as you state “guitarists” but then only look at electric guitarists? Alter your title or look at the greatest classical guitarists and other genres that you have ignored.
It's a cool list with very nice descriptions of the guitarists however it seems pretty obvious it wasn't formulated by a musician or if so not one who understood that much about ranking guitarist by there sheer skill and not just the magic they were able to produce. For example Eric Clapton is listed third best but johnny winter was not in this guy's top twenty. I'm sure Eric Clapton would be laughing if someone told him he was a better guitarist than johnny winter. I mean that's not even close johnny was so far above Clapton level of guitar skills as well as better then most on this list but that being said you would have to be a really good musician to know how ridiculous leaving johnny winter and others out of this top twenty list. I mean give me a break. Angus young is a more skilled guitarist than Albert collins,Freddie king, Luther tucker, And chef Atkins too ? That's OK, its all done with fun and admiration so a very enjoyable list. Thk you for this entertaining contribution. Well donel
Ask most comics their top 100 comics, typically 2-99 is whoever, but #1 is normally Richard Pryor. That's how Jimi is. It's been like that forever. Jimi Hendrix is the man.
The best or one of guitarist today whos been around since the eighties to me is Eric Johnson acoustic or electric of various formsts original or cover tunes are quite progressive a true musicians musician for everybody😂❤😮😊❤
Where us Paco DeLucia? Where is George Lynch und George Benson? Where is Sharon Isbin? Where is B.B King? Come on guys you forgot Juan Serrano, Flamenco Guitar. Let’s not forget Nancy Wilson.
ABSOLUTELY . For example, TERRY KATH - JIMI HENDRIX stated that "Terry Kath was the best guitarist in the universe" Hendrix, who used to play other musicians solo's for fun said that he could never play the solo that Kath played on this great song by "Chicago" - 25 or 6 to 4
@@tonys4396 I was thinking 25 or 6 to 4 was on Chicago V, which didn't come out 'til mid 1972. Since it was actually on II, dating from 1969, it MIGHT have predated the Jimi comment since he didn't die 'til September 1970.
Peter Green exhibits a direction connection between his heart, hands his fingers and a higher power. Peter expressed his pain through his guitar letting his playing cry for him. Peter's golden voice and writing skills made his music iconic and trend setting. Peter was known as the best guitarist during the British Blues Boom by his peers who paid tribute to Peter with numerous LP's performing his iconic songs. Rattlesnake Guitar featured many greats including Rory Gallagher, Kim Simmons, Harvey Mandel, Davebeck58 Peverretand Rod Price. Gary Moore's LP Blues For Greeny was a testament to Peter's legendary playing. Mick Fleetwood and Friends including Dave Gilmore, Peter Townsend and Gibbons led a group of legends who plaid Peter's legendary songs from his 60's music with Fleetwood Mac. The Green God was mostly appreciated by those that plaid alongside him, his peers.
Everybody has their own opinion and much of it has to do with the music you like. If you're into heavy stuff you probably rank EVH #1 or #2, he's not in my top 20 not because he doesn't have the technical skills but I just prefer other music. Duane Allman is top 3 for me with Jeff Beck and Hendrix. SRV and Tommy Emmanuel would round out my top 5. But I wouldn't argue much about this list except for one-Keith Richards wasn't even the best guitar player in his band. He admitted watching Mick Taylor in awe at time. John Mayall said Taylor was a better player than Clapton or Peter Green.
@@FactsVerse maybe you have it and I’m not aware but how about the best drummers of all time ranked in order. I know it’s a tuff call maybe brake it down by music styles. I know there a fantastic jazz drummers but rock drummers do completely different things as do a country drummer but there are greats in each field and and hardly interchangeable. You could do the best of each then rank those against each other.
Stevie Ray Vaughn should be within the top 5, if not the top. If Jimi Hendrix is your reference, SRV shreds Voodo Chile, Jimi Hendrix's staple piece. I don't think any other guitarist listed in this video can compare in style, speed, or virtuosity when compared to SRV.
First off I'll agree with you on 11 of the top 20 with Hendrix, Clapton, Beck, Page and Van Halen as the top 5. I would also include Allman, Townshend, and Santana in the top 10, I also have Walsh, Vaughn, Knopfler, and Zappa in my top 20. I will also switch in Peter Green and Angus Young as alternatives to Leslie West and Robin Trower as Mountain and Procol Harum have largely been forgotten. Now I also include Joe Satriani and Steve Vai in the top 10. Rounding out my bottom 10 are Steve Howe of Yes, David Fripp of King Crimson, Martin Barre of Jethro Tull, and The Steely Dan Guitarists, Jeff Baxter/Elliott Randall and Denny Diaz counting as 1. Heck, any of Becker's choices were great playing. Why I threw out BB and Chuck Berry; those are different genres and should have their own top 20. There are many great Blues and 50's R&R guitarists. Also Flamenco, C&W, acoustic virtuosos etc. As for Richards, Harrison, Garcia and Gilmour (I'll admit PF was a bit after my time), one should not confuse the lead guitarist from a super-group with actually being a top 20 guitarist. They certainly would make the top 50. As for Prince it appears in his videos the lead actually being played by Wendy and/or Lisa. I dunno, he's just not part of the AOR scene
@@christopherroveto5880 Yes, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter is often overlooked and is phenomenal. He played as a session musician quite a bit and has played so many great tunes. Just a great player.
That’s another thing… Everyone always mentions Duane Allman without ever mentioning Dicky Betts …. Why do that? 😮 I mean throughout the course of the Allman Brothers band Dickey would usually do the most interesting guitar work for them? 😮……
@@richarddelgado2723 He was not on Duane's level. I suck, but I can keep up with him. He did rise to the occasion on Duane's death (which was followed swiftly by Berry Oakley's) and kept the band's basic genre going, but without the great slide playing of Duane. Of course 20 yrs go by and time for advanced playing skills
@@TimLanders-m3q I attempted to track who the lead guitarist was for all the Steely Dan albums. There were several "guest" leads along the way including Rick Springfield and Mark Knopfler, I believe. The personnel is poorly documented on some of their albums, for the most part The first three albums Can't Buy, Countdown and Pretzel were Elliot Randall (staccato style intro on Reelin), Denny Diaz ( the electric sitar playing on Do it again) and Jeff Baxter mostly featured on Countdown, (the wonderful slide playing on Pearl of the Quarter).Skunk (and Michael McDonald) left after Pretzel to the Doobie Brothers. Larry Carlton was featured in the later albums like Aja and Gaucho. Diaz and Randall can be heard for the last time as a back & forth duo on the song "Aja". Becker is interesting. He was on bass for live performances and his first lead was Black Friday; a kind of an "all over the place" riff. He was more of a musician coordinator, matching the best player for each number.
Robin Trower should be in this group near the top. Rory Gallager as well. Jimmy Hendrix was not rejected by the U.S. Army. Hendrix was a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne and earned his Screaming Eagle Patch upon completion of training 11 January 1962. He received a General Discharge under Honorable Conditions later when the Army determined Hendrix had no real interest in the Army as a career. He claimed he received a medical discharge after breaking his ankle on his last jump, however there is no documentation to back that story up.
A list of who are the greatest musicians on any instrument or genre is impossible. What people love is subjective and always will be. I love guitar players and have often thought of making a list. I thought, how can I design a list with measurable criteria that most everyone would agree with. Eventually, I realized it could not be done. Maybe I would not select the correct criteria? Who can truly know who did the best riff or solo ever. You simply cannot. On this particular list, it has some great artists. Some of the best are on the list, some are not. The list seems to be more about who is most influential rather than who are the best players and for what reasons. As usual Hendricks is number 1, and he was amazing, however I think Jeff Beck was at least his equal as a player. But Hendricks had a bigger social influence. I have so many favorites and we are all very lucky to have experienced all their great tunes. Only God knows who is best and he is too busy to tell us.
I respect your opinion but just wanted to chime in…. 😂 Cause if this list was based on who is technically the best then Hendrix wouldn’t even be in the top 100 guitarist of all time…. But he is not number one for being a virtuoso…. He’s number one because of what he brought to the guitar.. His emotion … His choice of notes 🎶. I remember when I first heard like “Purple Haze” for example… The notes he chose made me feel sadness and pain… And this was before I even started playing guitar myself… This wasn’t just an ordinary, mindless composition by some Neanderthal. I’ve been playing now for awhile and my feelings still haven’t changed… Hendrix is still the best there ever was and will be in rock music…..
@@richarddelgado2723 I respect you because you actually play the guitar and I do not. I have always considered the great artists on guitar, those who play with great heart and emotion. That is what gets my heart thumping when I hear a great performance. Though I like a number of guitar players more than Hendricks, I still feel that passion when he plays. So, he is a fabulous player, no doubt about that. So, I don't really disagree with you. But it leads me back to my original point, it is subjective. But Jimi Hendrix changed the world of music, that is a fact.
And what about sticks and Boston? And you ride a heap in deep purple. There's a tremendous amount of talent out there. That was spectacular back in the 60s and 70s and there was def leopard.I couldn't even tell you all the different groups that were back then. There were so many of them and they were just as good as these guys
Like basketball, there are way too many to be considered the greatest. Some choose musical genres that I don't listen to. But I will say that I discovered Bernth on UA-cam, and his talent is mind blowing. I think he considers himself Metal, but his kind of talent would impress in all genres. I'm 67 yrs old, love most all genres (not a fan of country, opera, metal, Banda(latin regional?), I appreciate musical talent.
Pat Metheny, Kurt Rosenwinkel, John Scofield, Pat Martino, Ed Bickert, Lenny Breau, Bill Frisel, Larry Coreal, John Ambercrombie , the List is endless. There are so many great players out there . People really need to listen more and comment less about who is the best ( popular)!
Duane Allman # 20 really what world do you live in he literally created an entire genra of music when he convinced Wilson Pickett record Hey Jude. Critics have said that was the birth of Southern Rock and put Duane on Claptons radar. Really # 20 how insulting.
I often wonder why Glenn Campbell and Roy Clark are not in and amongst one of the greatest and versatile musicians. Whether it be the guitar, the banjo de violin, harmonica, Monica and other instruments, Roy Clark was a virtuoso of all kinds on match. Types, it, take it by anybody. I mean, these rock and rollers are great. But Roy Clark was amazing and Glenn Campbell. I just watched the concert from Sioux Falls way back win. And everybody should watch that concert the amount of music and the singing that he did was spectacular so give roy clark and glenn campbell a shout out up with the best
Lindsey Buckingham is some guitarist King Crimson supremo Robert Fripp, George Benson ( most famous for singing Give Me The Night ) and Pat Metheney are all technically excellent too
There is a comment here where someone says "There is no such thing as the best guitarist, there are so many excellent guitarists it is impossible to say who is the worlds best". I agree with @rogersmith5167's comment 100% to the fullest extent, and a well said comment. Not one country western star is mentioned here and there are many who could blow these rockers off stage, such as Vince Gill, Roy Clark, Glen Campbelll and more. Listen to the country duo of Brooks & Dunn. Kix Brooks is an outstanding country player. There are so many different styles, methods and sounds it is impossible to compare and choose a best. As a guitar player of over 60 years I have learned a few things. All the rockers use pedals and distortion in their rig set ups. These effects do make you sound much faster than you really are. I do experience this myself. These rockers come on stage with walls and walls of Marshall amps and speaker cabinets whereas the country players come on stage with their small but powerful Fender amps and go at it with a clean and fast sound. When I have my stratocaster plugged into my Marshall with an over drive pedal, I do sound much faster than I really am. If I switch to plugging straight into my Fender twin 12 amp with a cleaner sound, I can not do what I can through the Marshall amp with overdrive peddal. I would not pick one of these rock guitarists, except for Mark Knopfler over some of these country guitarists.

This is a ridiculous rating... Duane Allman #20???? No credibility for this AT all
I agree Richard's is higher than Beck ,King and Chuck Berry .Crazy
Agree. Skydog at #20 is total crap.
Because he was on a top 20 list?
Because he should have been higher?
You can boil all the lists down to:
-1- B.B. King
-2- Bonamassa
-3- SRV
-4- Nugent
-5- Clapton
-6- Harrison
-7- Moore
my favourite Johnny Winter, and I love so many others
I love 'Walk Don't Run'. It's iconic.
List should have been called ‘My favourite popular rock guitarists of all time’. I would probably have about 8 of them if I was doing a greatest guitarist list
Thanks for the feedback! Who is your favorite guitarist?
@@FactsVerse Thanks for the reply. Greatest ever guitarist I’d have to be predictable and say Shawn Lane. My favourite rock god would be Slash. Favourite popular rock guitarist I’ve always liked Clapton. Favourite acoustic guitarist probably someone like Mike Dawes. It’s all very much a personal preference as you know
The already mentioned Terry Kath of Chicago.and Glen Campbell both who also exhibited great vocals.
How about Roy Buchannan....

My top 5:
5. Jeff Beck
4. David Gilmour
3. Steve Howe
2. Jan Akkerman
1. Ritchie Blackmore
Blackmore is much more influential that many give him credit for. His influence on what would become known as neoclassical is unquestionable. He plays many styles superbly. Plus he developed techniques.
Jan Akkerman is criminally overlooked.
Steve Howe is a superb guitarist who is excellent in many styles.
To round out my top 10: Steve Hackett, John Petrucci, Steve Morse, Uli von Roth, Yngwie Malmsteen
Honorable mentions: Steve Vai, SRV, Zappa
From Jazz/Fusion: John McLaughlin, Al Dimeola, Pat Metheny
Let's also mention Roy Clark - wow, superb musician.
This list is void with SRV not in the top 5

Probably should be titled greatest "classic rock" guitarists of all time. It's a good list, definitely some of the most influential and successful classic rock guitarists though a few holes, Richie Blackmore, Joe Perry, Alvin Lee, The Edge....
My favorites are Angus Young, Brian Setzer, Glen Campbell, Roy Clark, Mark Knopler, David Gilmore and Chuck Berry.

You definitely don't know Michael Schenker or have heard some of the band UFO's albums.
Not even mentioned.. I'd put Gary Moore up against ANY of these guys!
yes Gary and Rory
ABSOLUTELY 💯
For me, this is a perfect or near perfect list of guitarists. Music, transcends race, where you come from, everything. I knew Jimi Hendrix would be number one, but I am glad that the older guitarists such as BB, King, and Chuck Berry were on this list. But, who is greatest can be subjective.
Yet again the title should be corrected as you state “guitarists” but then only look at electric guitarists? Alter your title or look at the greatest classical guitarists and other genres that you have ignored.
Rory Gallagher Terry Kath
Well donel
Rory Gallagher. Untouchable. Unmatched. Legend.

It should say popular guitarists
ABSOLUTELY . For example, TERRY KATH - JIMI HENDRIX stated that "Terry Kath was the best guitarist in the universe"
Hendrix, who used to play other musicians solo's for fun said that he could never play the solo that Kath played on this great song by "Chicago" - 25 or 6 to 4

I saw the Beck & Vaughan tour. It was phenomenal

What about Bireli Lagrene?

Got it, thanks for sharing your thoughts--much appreciated!
Your welcome!
What? No Robbie Krieger?!
