First has a functioning syncro when down shifting from 2nd gear but not when "upshifting" from N. There is a modification that can be done inside the 1-2 syncro ring to make it function like the 3-4 syncro ring. This fault is part of the Alfa design. A fast idle makes the problem worse, pausing for a few seconds after pushing in the clutch works well for 1st and R or selecting 2, 3 or 4 before shifting to 1 or R.
First is not synchronized from a standstill, though it is reported to be synchronized "only when moving" by a yob on a board somewhere...but I suspect it just seems synchronized when moving because everything in the transmission is already in motion. To avoid the grind in first and reverse from a stop, I always move to third initially (which is synchronized) to get the layshaft moving and then change over to first or reverse. I did the same thing for years with my early Saab 900. Works a treat! Nonetheless, this video has inspired me to take-on the (likely) ancient fluid in my transmission, too. I LOVE the pump you created - definitely going to steal that idea!
It’s not everyday you get to work on a Alfa Romeo. Is this your first? I raced one once. (Probably a 1979 model) That is the only interaction I have ever had with one. Lol!
I was in love with my Giulia and Alfa Romeo as a brand, however, I will never again buy/recommend another Alfa Romeo in my life. I had the brake by wire system fail on me and it caused me to crash and total the car. They sent someone from Bosch to diagnose the vehicle and in the charts it clearly showed that something malfunctioned (brakes were slammed 2 seconds before the impact at 40 MPH and it took more than 1.5 seconds for the speed to start going down.) Stellantis told me that they were not going to take responsibility for it and that I needed to have my insurance pay for the vehicle. Absolute garbage. I will never recommend this car brand to anyone again! Buy an AUDI, BMW or Mercedes instead!!!!

Thanks for watching
It is kinda of a Alfa quirk, for me I pop in 4th then gently push into 1st
Jobs like these are the reason I have so much respect for you Phil!
You sure get a variety of vehicles in your shop
Before putting in 1st or in reverse, move to 2nd. It works on my ‘74.
Nice video🤔👍

First one...
@@PhillipBailey Sometimes nice to work on a strange brand you don’t come across in your normal work week.
