There is a huge issue with sports betting companies teaming up with media companies like ESPN.We saw how much Pat could move money lines with his bets. That’s a huge conflict of interest that can manipulate the market
That's not an issue, it's the reason for this whole thing happening. The point of the biggest sports media company partnering with a sports book is to manipulate games even further.
They talked about this during the NBA draft when Shams, employed by fanduel, tweeted something to the effect of "hey this guy is getting a lot of buzz to go #2" the night before and all of the lines changed to favour that guy going instead of the revious consensus #2. In the end the player Shams tweeted about didn't end up going #2 so the optics became "insider employed by gambling company put out information/speculation that changed the lines and made said gambling company a tonne of money". Massive conflict of interest even though for Shams it was just reporting, same thing will happen with ESPN talking heads and their new sportsbook I guess
I know ESPN got short term ratings from it, but I think the hot takes era ruined espn. They lost sight of why people like sports. They courted controversy over people's fandom of the sports. I got burnt out by it, so I shifted over to the dedicated networks like NFL network and NHL network where the games and play were central, not stupid arguments.
The reason Penn didn’t work with Barstool is because Penn expected Barstools fans to just use their gambling app even though they gave them the worst lines and promotions. If they do the same thing with ESPN it will also fail.
Also because Barstool’s fans skew young, where there isn’t nearly as much active income available. 90% of most gaming companies is made up by 5% of its user base: VIPs. VIPs are older and don’t relate to the Barstool brand at all. ESPN can improve that with a more widespread brand reputation.
I used to read articles on Deadspin and Barstool about 10 years ago. When they were small and personal, they were fun. The bigger they got the more content was useless, tasteless, time-wasting. Barstool is for 12 year old males with nothing better to do. There is a small share of the media pie for them to exploit. The bigger they are, the less watchable they are.
Couldn't have said it better myself. Anytime I see a glimpse of a Barstool video, I get a little nausea. ESPN might be putting me to sleep, but the immaturity of Barstool is like season 1 of Jackass.... and I'm grown 😂😂
I have come to love your content. I particularly love your pain and suffering as a Broncos fan and having lived through many lean years as a Chiefs fan my schadenfreude is very comforting. Your presentation of other NFL (and sports stories like this) is well done and I am happy to support you with my digital attention.
Barstool seems like the company who makes content for all the meathead jocks who got eight concussions by day and funneled five Four Lokos at parties by night.
Espn is probably the largest influence on the general outlook on players and teams. This means that any bets that are heavily based on bias, like the mvp discussion every year, are able to be manipulated in multiple ways
I wish there was a way both of these companies could disappear. ESPN is a joke at best these days and the obnoxious fratboy culture of Barstool has me just tuning out and blocking every bit of it that I see.

Barstool will never die unless Portnoy leaves or dies. Penn took a gamble and lost. Barstool’s audience skews towards college aged kids with little disposable income. For all of Portnoy’s flaws (and there a fuck ton), he’s a good evaluator of internet personalities and his “I don’t give a fuck what you think” attitude appeals to a lot of people. The problem is that Barstool has had so many scandals and that scares off so many advertisers. Penn found that out the hard way by trying to set up the sportsbook in Massachusetts. For every good thing they do for small businesses or people struck by tragedy, they do a dozen other things that are despicable. They’ll be fine, but I don’t think they’ll be as financially profitable as they could be
If they were doing anything close to "fine" a hedge fund would have happily paid a modest price to Penn and milked it for income the way they do local newspapers. You only sell something for $1 if it's already a financial boat anchor and you just want someone else to assume its liabilities.
@@shaunnichols1743 Chernin was the only real interested investor when they bought Barstool in 2016 for a reason. Barstool was viewed as a poison and could’ve tanked other investments if someone partnered with them. Barstool is a very risky investment. So many people hate barstool but these are unique talented people.
Who would bet with a sportsbook tied with the biggest sports media company in the world? Sure seems like a conflict of interest if you're ESPN
12:50 great news for old barstool fans.
I miss when it was more raw and less corporate
Are you really from Pueblo? I'm in Cañon. Would be cool too meet you so i can say I met a celebrity lol
I literally never heard of Barstool until I watched Donnie Does like... Damn a decade ago now.

Been putting a jar of minced garlic on sourdough and it's really good.
Caleb Rainey and Glenny Balls are the only thing good from Barstool , everything else is trash
Their bit was funny at first, but the shtick got old pretty quick.
WonTon Don stays as the best thing about barstool
After every big game or big moment I go straight to barstool podcasts or personalities for their reaction before I even open an ESPN app.
Wow the reporting on reporting you do is great. It being your job It's like you're an insider at the company or something. Like you're taking us behind the curtain. This and the espn one might be the best. I like the silly stuff but dam this is great 👍
You’re welcome! Keep making good content.
@thatsgoodsports hook up,the link to the Broncos food products vid?
Barstool will go down as well. Their numbers have been dipping. And Gen Z almost wants nothing to do with them.
It's not Barstool versus ESPN, it's Barstool versus Disney. What are the general issue that will be for Barstool is that, Barstool will have a hard time obtaining advertisers to do those risky things that they do. A lot of their money came from that sports betting area, and it allowed them to do a lot of the things that they do, but now they can only hope that their personalities can draw an advertisement. ESPN is on the boat if it's on. They have the money look at the situation and go "oh wow that doesn't work" and then immediately clean house and get fresher talent in a faster pace with less risk to them
I don’t think it’s espn that doesn’t want to associate with barstool, it’s definitely Disney
