Love the video... simple, clear, comprehensive and very helpful. Saves a whole trip to the guitar shop. Thanks for taking the time to do it. Helped me a lot.
I was originally planning to get the schaller locks but went with the big one which is the Marvel strap locks. Can't wait for it to arrive! Thank you very much for the review!
Thank you for your comprehensive summary of strap locks, I found it very helpful.
THANK YOU! No other youtuber other than you would explain the mechanism behind each type of strap lock!
Thank you a lot! This video was very helpful!
I had never heard of Strap Locks until a few weeks ago when my guitar simply fell and luckily it didn't get any major damage but now I'm going to get strap locks on all of my guitars.
This video/demo helps me alot 👍🏻🎸🎶
Thanks Kennis!
Good info Kennis. I want to add two ideas for you and your watchers. You can find any size screw at your local hardware store, not the big box stores. They come in many different widths which are numerical such as 4, 6, 8 up to 14. After the number is the length, such as 6 X 1", 8 X 1 1/2", 10 X 2". They come in slotted and Phillips heads. Also different materials and plating such as cad, chrome and brass. Second, you can use BLUE Loctite on the strap nuts to make sure that they NEVER loosen over time. (can also find at hardware store). Blue is a medium holding agent and nuts can be removed for reuse. DO NOT use the Red Loctite, because you will usually break the bolt part, and/or strip the nut taking it off. Hope this info helps everyone.
Thank you and great lesson - I went from knowing nothing about these to knowing what I need to buy and how to install and use it. Thanks!
great presentation thanks Kennis. you answered everything I needed to know about strap locks .cheers Dave C, New Zealand
Thanks dude. Got a strap lock on second hand I bought and couldnt figure where to attach the strap. Maybe I eventyally would but your video made it easy.
Excellent demo... much appreciated. I had no idea how they worked but I'll buy some now. Cheers!
Great video man. Really filled me in as I just bought an expensive guitar myself. Will definitely have a look at buying a set.
Thanks man! Very instructive video
Thanks, Kennis! I've been wondering how these actually work. I was actually looking at the Fender Infinity Locks. 👍
The "drill a new hole" idea was a good one! I'll have to remember that one.
Thanks Kennis! This was a big help, man!
Amazing dude! comprehensive
Just got a set in from Ebay. You are absolutely correct about the cheaper ones not having enough threads. It was a SOB to install on my strap but I did it. Lesson learned...cheaper is not better. I was able to reuse the screws from the existing buttons.
Nice review Kennis. I like the Loxx strap locks on both my electric and acoustic guitars. The strap pin is a small nub of a button and the clip part that goes on the strap is similar to the two piece one you demonstrated only much smaller and comes with a small wrench to tighten it on the strap.
Thanks - just what I was looking for!
I learned a lot today thanks to your strap locks video
Actually, I liked that you showed several types, and why or how the cheaper version from China might, or might not, work in a particular situation. I also liked that you showed exactly how the lock mounted on to the strap. Nice job.
Very good and informative video! Thanks for informations that you gave us:D
I came here because I got straplocks with my new bass. I put them on and they didnt come off (like they should). Glad you explained you had to pull the knob.
Great vid dude. Thanks!
This helped a lot
My guitar came with the first set of locks, but good quality ones.
I was wondering if I needed a different set.
Now I know!
Very helpful. Thank you.
Excellent, thank u very much!
Thanx Dude, very helpful....
gracias por el vídeo, necesitaba una comparación :D
Loxx is my favorite strap lock brand. Strap lock are must have to protect instrument from dropping.
Thanks for the video very useful
Schaller just released a new version of the classic Strap locks, they are worth checking out and around 30€ in europe
also consider the diameter of the cylindrical portion of the strap lock where the strap end is wrapping around. on a long-term basis, the smaller it is, the faster it is going to rip the strap end when it pulls against it. that means, on that level, the marvel also does better.
thx for tips!
Appreciated your advice dude. Have the Schaller on my Tele, but clip has worn and now looking for alternative. Listened to your review of the Marvels but life just seems easier with the Planet Waves Planet Lock. The only issue with this is you have to buy the strap as the locks come attached, but it makes life easy. I have one already, though not so comfortable, but I see there are at least leather alternatives so off to buy one now. If you have not tried it out then check it out.
Kennis, thanks for the review, iI really appreciate it. Can you tell me if one should have a strap lock on both end or just the top ...thanks...Mark
Excelente!!!!
Thanks!!
0:41 scared the shit out of me
nice!
Grolsch straps work best. They are only $4 a set. They require no drilling or screwing and they come with free beer
Synapse2k that's gonna end up being the most expensive beer you're ever going to buy. Those rubber rings will keep loosening the screw, you'll end up constantly having to retighten screw. You are eventually going to forget to do that and you'll either end up dropping your guitar or at best damaging the screw hole.
never had that problem in 5 years using only rubber washers...
Pierfra007 I picked up a set of Schaller strap locks for €13.50. Easy to install, works great with no fear of dropping my guitar. I'd never use anything else ever again. If rubber rings work for you that's great but personally I think that the nine or so extra dollars/euros is worth it considering the hundreds you potentially risk losing because someone cheaped out on a couple of rubber rings
actually, after years of broken screws and loose locks, I sold my schallers and switched to rubber. it's now 5 years, and I've never had a problem ever.
one thing I love with rubber washers is that they let the strap stay "in it's position" while you sit, and don't turn around making the strap fall from the shoulder...
plus beer!
@kennisrussell I'll try looking for them online. And they're the Dunlop Dual Design strap locks that I have on now. And I installed them correctly.
pretty good!
thanks for the video. I'm buyin meself a set this week since i wanna jump around in my band. My strap always falls off if i jump while playing lol
Ive had the marvel ones fail me repeatedly, worn out ball-bearings and groves worn into the button have resulted in the strap not being able to rotate. Then you move around thus unscrewing both the strap from the washer and the strap button screw from the horn! And I am talking about a perfect installation with plier tight nuts and glued down screws....
*****
then again i am pretty demanding on my guitars... But basically when these are worn they will get stuck when you put force on them i.e. you are halfway trough a "guitar over the shoulder-swing" and then the whole thing screws apart and falls off!
i did but they still broke down somehow
It would be nice to know the makers of the locks.
Thanks Vic
Vic Johnson the one he prefers is the Dunlop (the big one on the left), the nickel one to the right of the Dunlop is the Schaller strap lock (the best imo). I personally wouldn't feel too confident in the ball bearings of the Dunlop holding the strap in place. Stay away from the cheap Chinese knock off's. Probably made from a cheaper more brittle metal and therefore more likely to break
The "one he prefers" is actually a Marvel lock
dforce, the dunlop is really shitty, these are not it. these are marvels, but suffer from the same problem. the retaining spring for the ball bearing wears out and your guitar falls. the schaller has a redundancy built in, never falls.
Personally I like the Grovers. Especially when using with a Gibson or Epiphone. The screws are a perfect fit so zero drilling.
i'll buy the biggest one... thank you!
I THOUGHT SO, JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE.
I just bought another acoustic guitar and it has the factory installed button on the end. Should I try to remove that button or just install my strap lock button near the orgininal?
if you have a loose strap lock put some tooth picks in there to fill in some space. worked for me.
What was the brand name of the biggest one you had? I've been researching on heavy duty strap locks for my Les Paul bass and I play pretty low to even make the Dunlop locks I have on there fall off until I had to super glue the pieces together.
I bought a dunlop strap lock, and the screws it came with are too small, i have a dean ml, what should i do?
are the thick locks (the one he said he likes best) the Gotoh??
I would add a tooth pick and a bit of wood glue to reinforce the hole of the guitar, even when using the same screw. but maybe that's just me.
I may have missed it but whats the name of that big one? Love the way it looks would like to use it
SKDK
'Marvel Guitar Chrome Straplock System' or 'MVS-501-CR'
Kennis,I had the pull-knob fall off my strap lock and now I can't remove the strap lock from the button. Do you have any ideas for how to get the strap lock off so I can screw the pull knob back onto the threaded post?
Kennis, If he has to resort to the Dremel, he might want to be very careful what kind of tape he puts on the guitar. It might mess up the finish when it's pulled off. Whatever you use, make sure that the adhesive on the tape isn't very strong. It only needs to stay put for a short time anyway. I agree with lots of layers if it's not thick tape.
The ball bearing locks are like the air fitting on an air compressor - very reliable , but bulky . I have the Schaller strap locks on my guitars - Gibson , PRS and other high end going to a cheaper , Chinese made (Harbor Freight quality) hardware is just plain dumb. You are only safe as your weakest link - buy quality
What brands were each of these?
i have used the marvel one and it keeps coming out right after i installed it. it cost me my 1 year old guitar. It broke off at the headstock. luckily it can be repaired. definitely not going to use the marvel straplock anymore.
Has the strap lock ever ruined the inside of the guitar? iv had 2 guitars and both it has killed the wood inside and ruins it.. Advice?
what's the brand name please? is that big one by Marvel?
I pick my thumb too.
Who needs expensive (sorta) strap locks when you can just buy 2 glasses of Grolsch beer (or any buckled glass) and use their rubber gasket.
You can even buy these little rubber gaskets individually in outdoor stores. It's just as effective as any other strap locks.
AnotherGuyOnUA-cam Do you talk from experience? Is it possible to do a guitar flip without the guitar flying away, with those red things?
+AnotherGuyOnUA-cam Your advice is worth precisely what is costs.
onfire4000 I talk from experience. I have those on my SG and they work perfectly.
I don't know what kind of rubber gaskets you can buy at the local store, but the ones I bought (approx, 5 cents each) were quite a tight fit.
Tight enough for me not to be able to take the straps down without cutting through the rubber.
The Grolsch gaskets are great, except when you use em for a longer period, the rubber will stretch and eventually come off. Also they won't fit on just any standard strap holder. If the holder is too narrow and your strap is made of leather (for instance), the gasket will come off easily. I should know coz I've used em for like 25 years and am encountering these exact 2 problems now.
Guitar flips look stupid, unless you have the skills, image and the money to back it up, like Vai, just to name one...
btw: in the old days I used shoelaces to secure the strap ;)
1 year delay from my part, but it's a Marvel Strap Lock if I'm correct!
Over 7 years late but thanks! I was wondering g what those were.
what guitar is that?
Nice review! Thanks. I've subscribed. I'm using the LM Sure-Lock which is totally external to the strap buttons already on the instrument. It's simple, very effective, inexpensive and made in the US. Check it out. Let me know you think.
By the way, it is the Fender strap lock.
how an asyrmatic microphone fou zone guitars works
i just use a washer:D
DO "STRAP LOCKS" KEEP SOME JIMMY FROM STEALING YOUR STRAP?
Hi kennis russel you think you could me this song on electric guitar Come on, Come on the chords are E, B , A, C# , F # , B , E You think you can do this song for me I'm just a bass player trying to play guitar message me if you can or can't do the song ? Thank you
why you put a straplock on the neck!? man, the tone of your guitar, comes from the neck! thats realy nuts! haha (Y) nice vid anyway, very well explained
your wellcome, besides will give you beter balance on the side! ;)
the view count when im watching this is 55,555
It is an old guitar with the peg glued in. That the problem.
Where can you get cheap ass ones? These things are expensive.
The ProLine chrome strap locks are defective. The male center pin will not engage with the female housing because the chrome coating prevents it. I finally figured that out after buying my second set and reading the comments on Amazon. Absolute junk. Buyer beware! ProLine should be sued for all the guitar necks they have broken.
just take a little rubber from a beerbottle.......nothing works better!
Why do a review on strap locks without mentioning the brand names? This just doesn't make sense.
Most people reading such a review are likely in the market, and it would be helpful to know the brands which can be purchased. :)
BTW - I accidentally clicked +1 that should be a minus.
