Actually a double slit velcro connection with stiff tips (think shoelaces but the harder part is on the inside) and you could swap even faster than the clip locks while having a connection that is twice as strong as the surrounding material when engaged. Basically shove them through each other's slit and press together. if you're feeding through a few inches of velcro, it's not going to separate or tear off accidentally when engaged, but when you're ready to swap straps you can just grab both ends and pull away so it slips apart easily. As long as the tips are fairly rigid and the rest of the "tabs" a bit stiff, it should work pretty much just like that.
EDIT: I'd make sure that it's got non-static generating material, just because, ever pet a cat when it's dry out lol brrrrzap.

Highly recommend D’Addario auto lock straps. A salesman turned me onto them and surprisingly he was completely right, they are awesome. Clip on instantly, faster than even a traditional strap. No modifying the guitar, no individual parts, honestly you can barely even notice it’s not a regular strap. Holds on pretty darn tight, but comes off super easy. That being said I kind of doubt they would stand up to the abuse of the road, but just in general they are awesome.

If it works for you that's great, keep doing it. But with the classic Schaller style and (I think) the Ernie Ball style you can use the factory strap button screws if you wish. You wouldn't be altering or creating any new holes in your guitar

Strap locks are a must for me. Started with the Dunlops in the late 90's and still using them. They work perfectly fine and have always been available everywhere. I like that I've just been able to use whatever strap I want. As far as the looks, I don't think any of them look all that great, so that's not really a deciding factor for me. Maybe Dunlop could make their look sound fancier by calling it an "industrial design". 😅

The Schaller redesign isn't poor. They're offered in different sizes now. Get the appropriate sized buttons, and you'll never have to worry about the screw breaking. If you're not sure what size you need, measure the used length of the threads on your factory button screws or just buy the small S-Locks. If the screws are too small, just use a few pieces of maybe a toothpick or something until the screws thread in snug. This gives you a good bite for the threads without worrying about breaking a screw or irreversibly damaging the wood of the guitar.

Schaller all the way. Have them on all my instruments and especially the new designed ones are great! Never had any issues with a screw breaking. They also sell different sized screws with the same sized head - just make sure to get the right one and don't use the thinnest.

the old schaller strap buttons still work, you dont need to use the new buttons. The fender strap lock buttons also fit the schaller perfectly and are cheap, and you can use the original screw that was in your guitar with them just like normal strap buttons

I agree 100% about not falling into our old familiar patterns just because they’re familiar. I still think Dimarzio Clip locks are the most solid choice for me personally. I am VERY tall, and Dimarzio straps are significantly longer than a standard strap. I do have to buy their extension anchors (sold separately) for guitars I have that the screw hole is in the neck heel, so they are pricey, but nothing Beats them especially if you’re a larger human than most.

I’ve tried a few now. The problem I have with ball bearing-based locks is that if your instrument is a bit heavy, the bearings will deteriorate the metal of the strap button over time. I ended up being mid set and having the strap detach. However, I was playing bass at the time and a heavy one at that.
After that, I went to the new Schallers and I think I’ve found the right fit for me. One upgrade which wasn’t touched upon in the video is the three metal spikes locking the strap in. This keeps the lock from spinning around like the old ones (if the old ones spun around they could randomly detach).

    • @Bobby_Uterus
      @Bobby_Uterus Рік тому

The older Schaller models were the best. If they were detaching when spinning around, you need to adjust the spring so more peg sits in the strap button. Stay away from the new S lock models. The fact they don’t spin like the old ones makes them bind on the strap button, twisting back and fourth, chewing up the wood threads in the guitar.

Twenty years ago, when I toured a lot, my band just screwed the straps to the guitar with a stainless screw, nylon spacer, stainless fender washer, and a stainless finish washer. It's very cheap and reliable. We would break normal strap locks or they would rip out because of the mounting point being further from the body.

I know it’s been a while since they did it, but I very much agree with what you said about the schaller locks.
I was an avid user and proponent of using them until they changed the design. I wouldn’t want to use them on a “cheap” guitar, let alone one of my high end models. It kinda baffles me that they haven’t gone back to the old way by now since it has to be most of us that don’t like the new design.

for the last 20 years i use the dunlop straplocks and i flush mount them since they have flushmount receivers. this stops the weight of the guitar from ripping the screw out, especially from jumping around and playing hard. you gotta drill into the body for the receiver, but its a permanent solution. this is the cleanest and most secure way because the strap lays flat to the guitar and leaves the guitar clean without the strap connected (unlike the dimarzio leaving straps and clips hanging around)

BTW - For anyone who really likes the original Schaller strap button design, Grover makes that exact design today, and they are completely compatible with all Schaller locks. That is what I have moved to.

I tried the Schaller first, 20 years ago, they were ok. The nut would come loose and I didn't care for the pull and slide to remove. Also didn't care for the asthetic.
When that first guitar for stolen I tried the Dunlop on my new guitar. The spring clip doesn't come loose, the thumb push and pull is much smoother, and I think it actually looks best of everything available.
I only have 4 guitars, but each one has its own strap with Dunlop locks. And when I install the buttons, I use a piece of toothpick in the screw hole. 2 guitars were gigged heavily for a couple years and I've never had an issue with them.
And they just look so good!

Loxx user on everything for 7 or 8 years here. Super fast, super secure, and they don't hold the strap a mile away from the guitar like some of the designs (I particularly hate the Dunlop ones that were fitted to my Mike Lull basses). Doesn't give you the option of using a strap without the attachments, but it's well worth that minor possible inconvenience.

I love the Dunlop dual design, but I actually don't use them as intended. Instead of locking the locks to the strap, I just put the strap on the guitar end of the lock and secure the bell lock over it. Still works, and the strap is closer to the guitar's body (common complaint with the Dunlops is they're further from the body).
The Dual Design don't have to be used with the locks to begin with - they have a classic button with the option to use the normal locks on top. I consider it a double lock because now I have the classic no-lock system holding it in place and the locking bell just guarantees it doesn't move.
Without locks, I have basses drop off regularly - even on my dad's bass that he's never had that issue with. I might just hold it differently, but it happens. I've never had a failure with the locks - even considering I use it different from the recommendation.

  • @MikeCarpenter222
    @MikeCarpenter222 Рік тому

There's a MUCH bigger problem with the new Schaller design... Since they changed the the tightening mechanism from a nut to a thumbwheel, I was never able to get it screwed tight enough on my strap to keep it from rotating. Yes, I'm aware that there is a hole to run an hex wrench through, but I didn't have one long AND thin enough to be able to get much torque. Within 15 minutes of standing while playing my brand new Les Paul, the strap side of the lock rotated 180 degrees, and the plunger failed sending my new guitar straight to the floor. It's a MIRACLE that the headstock didn't break. Fender still makes the older style Schaller design, so I just buy those instead.
I've never tried the Ernie Ball locks, but I'll give them a shot next time I need new locks.

I got the "old" Schallers a few years ago. Very happy with them for my guitars made in Europe and Asia. However, I could not use them with my USA made Les Paul. All the Schallers (and all strap locks, as far as I could gather at the time) shipped with metric sized screws. The LP however, had the original strap buttons screwed with slightly larger imperial sized screws with a wider thread. Meaning, the holes in the guitar body were slightly too big for the screws that came with the Schallers. And the heads on the LP's original screws were too big to fit in the Schaller strap lock buttons. Sure I could have ground the heads down a bit, but what the heck. Or I could have done the old toothpicks and superglue trick to plug the screw holes so that the metric screws would thread properly. I couldn't be bothererd at that point. For the LP I just use a regular strap and the rubber "beer bottle seals", same as Bonamassa uses.

Hence i used these red, rubber rings, from Grolsch beers, to put over the strap/strappin which worked. But yeah, my straps got torn everytime which has led me to Dimarzio cliplocks. So far, pretty convenient and no tears in fabric just yet. The click thingy seems rather convenient too, tho all guitars have their own strap.

As a few other people have said if you like the old style Schallers you can get them from Fender. Be aware though that unlike the old Schallers they don't come with a choice of screw lengths, and if you have some leftover screws from an old Schaller set they don't actually fit (the hole on the Fender button is slightly smaller), so you'd have to source some separately.
In every other way though they're fully compatible.
While I'm mostly happy with the new S-Locks it's true that the hex screw is not always a good fit. Also, while they will sell a "Large" version of the button/screw piece, it's not as long as the long screw that came with the old sets.
I bought a guitar onto which a previous owner had fitted DiMarzio Cliplocks. Perhaps it was just the specific one I got but I found the plastic buckle was not cleanly moulded and kept pulling threads on my clothes. That guitar now has S-Locks.

This video is impeccably-timed. Only yesterday, I was having a similar discussion with my bandmates. They both use Schaller locks. As for me, for all the various mechanical lock systems, I honestly prefer the Fender rubber rings. They are just SO EASY, and I don't need to modify anything. I simply put on the Fender rings, and the strap is not going anywhere. They also come in a variety of colours, black, red, turquoise, sea foam green, so you can easily match them to any strap.
Of course, leave it to Fender to invent the best design, simultaneously proving simplicity is always the best design.
Better still, the Fender rubber rings are also the same price as picks, so I occasionally buy them in bulk, and give them away, the same as I occasionally give away picks.
I know some people are going to talk about guitar flips, guitar spins, and indeed such stupid showboating is the entire reason mechanical locks were invented in the first place. As for me, I don't, and WON'T do any of that. I do dance about on stage, but that is the extent of what I will do, and that is WHILST I a playing. The guitar never leaves my hands, so all I need is confidence in the strap itself not coming off the pins. For that purpose, the Fender rubber washers are everything I need, everything I want.
I wholeheartedly recommend, and endorse the Fender rubber rings.

I've been using shaller strap locks exclusively since 1985 when I was in high school. Every time I moved my strap would fall off. The original design is never let me down in his never broken unlike the new ones. One thing I've noticed over the years is straps like the DiMarzio don't have a rough side on the bottom. Most guitars that you find are neck heavy even if only a little bit. The energy you spend holding the guitar up hinders your playing even if only a little bit.

Fender makes strap locks that are designed like the old Schallers. I use those because you can buy the individual strap buttons that screw into the guitar for like $5.

I recently got an Ibanez that had what I think was a Schaller strap lock, and rhe clanking noise made me go nuts so after a very short time, I changed back the strap buttons to the original and put on some of the good old fender rubber rings as I always do. I don't understand how people can just ignore that sound and use those things.

I started using the D'addario Auto lock straps because they have the same "seatbelt" feel as the Dimarzio straps but don't require you to change anything. Another issue I've had with the dimarzio's is sometimes the provides screws are a different size than the screw the manufacturer used and I'm disinclined to re-drill the hole.

Schallers kept ripping my hair out so I switched back to Dunlop. Dunlops are slightly more annoying to get set up but I have more faith in the E clip then I do a part that comes loose over time like on the Schaller. I try to remove as many variables before a show as possible. EDIT - I'm referring to the older Schallers.

I haven't tried the Ernie Ball locks yet but probably will. My favorite is DiMarzio ClipLocks, which are on 21 of my guitars. 2nd place would go to Dunlop Straplock Dual Design. Next would be the D'Addario Auto Lock strap, followed by Schaller.

I got into the DiMarzio strap locks in 1997 when I bought my first wireless system. The Shure clip did not fit well on my straps, so I always had to tape them for reinforcement. The clip lock system was perfect because when I wanted to switch guitars, I just unplugged the wireless transmitter, unclipped the strap, and switched guitars. Quick, easy, and I didn't have to buy a transmitter for each guitar I had. Theoretically, I could have done the same thing with the Dunlop system, but it was a bit of a pain in the ass to do it with one hand. The DiMarzio strap was easy to unclip with one hand.

Bought one set of DiMarzio Clip Locks for a PRS SE Singlecut. Last set I'll ever buy, for exactly the reasons you mentioned. I went with a set of gold Schaller S-locks on my Epiphone Les Paul Custom. I like them better, but they're nothing to write home about. The quality doesn't seem to be there for what I paid. They just seem to bind instead of swiveling, which is exactly what you described, with the need to oil them. Dunlop and Ernie Ball are both about half the price, and they look better. I may go with a set of each next time around to see which one I like best.

I switched to D'addario strap locks from Schaller. I love the Schaller but my Schecter E1 has a pin on the backside of the body which makes the pin stab your waist or hip. The D'addario's are way more comfortable while using close to the same design as the Schallers

The one thing that bugged me about most of the strap locks is that if you wanted to use the same strap on several different guitars, I'd have to purchase several complete sets to get enough buttons to use a single strap. It was expensive, and I had a bunch of extra locks that I didn't need sitting in a drawer. I use Dunlops, and I wrote to them asking why they didn't sell additional sets of buttons and explained my dilemma and also suggested that selling extra buttons would be another money-making opportunity for them. They never responded to my email, but a few years later, they started selling additional button sets. I don't know if it was my email that inspired them or not; there are probably a bunch of people who thought the same thing.

My brother uses this one strap for all but 2 one that is his Silvertone style P bass the original non locking strap are straps that lock D'Addario or Ernie Ball (I forget) due to how easy it is to remove and due to padding on one instrument strap a newer style Dunlop strap that locks. He needs for some cases a strap that removes easy yet will work with the original strap button due to the tight fit in the case.
