      Gotta say, I actually find it funny as hell that someone with ink all over their FACE, neck, etc... is so distraught about this. As a person who thinks most tattoos a little silly at best ridiculous at worst (face...check back in how cool you are in your 50s, 60s...share with us the missed opportunities in life, etc...that's if they reach their 50s) so few people will ever notice even if it was never fixed. I see tattoos, and could not care less exactly what you have. Also, this woman no doubt runs around like she's hard af, I am enjoying the schadenfreude

    When I worked at a tattoo shop, we passed around stencils for every single tattoo that had text to at least 3-4 people in the shop. Everyone had to read and approve it before it went on skin.

      The new age social media has caused a lack of respect and awareness. The internet gives off this idea that being a tattoo artist because you bought equipment off of Amazon. Maybe watched a few videos. Then decided it's good enough to start tattooing. In my opinion, that's a big disrespect towards the body modification industry. That lady tattooer let her ego get in the way. Why didn't she check the spelling before and after putting the stencil on??? What a lazy person. Tattooing isn't for lazy people who can't spell.....
      She should be fired. That tattoo was absolutely terrible anyway. It would be easy to cover up

    The appropriate way to distinguish a scenario like this is basically as follows:
    • The customer is responsible for spotting any misspellings present in the example+stencil, because they're the ones approving the entire process leading up to the needle being inked. *(tattoo = stencil)*
    • The artist is responsible for the misspelling if they messed it up _during the tattoo,_ when the stencil and customer proofed a correct example+stencil prior to ink. *(tattoo ≠ stencil)*
    This is realistically the cleanest line of responsibility, IMO. However, neither party should be verbally abusive whatsoever.
    That said, as an artist and habitual editor, regardless, I would personally be very frustrated if I didn't notice my own misspelling, or didn't notice AND VERIFY THE CUSTOMER'S INTENTION about a misspelling in _their_ example, leading to a misspelled stencil and tattoo (in accordance with the criteria above).

In my opinion it is still ethically a tattoo artist’s job to also be vigilant when it comes to these things to prevent them from happening (you know since they’re professionals) because sometimes clients/customers aren’t always paying attention in the moment. I went to a well established tattoo shop in Los Angeles to get tattooed by a well known artist. After my first session I noticed there was a misspelling but it was in a very fancy calligraphy style so the missing letter wasn’t obvious. I waited until at the end of the second and final session. (total time for the tattoo was about 10 hours. It was a 12 inch by 8 inch realistic black & grey with mini tattoos & writing at the bottom) I waited because I knew there wasn’t much that could be done. I wanted my artist fully focused on what he was doing rather than stressing about the missing letter. Also, during the first session he bought me dinner, offered the shirt off his own back that had the shop logo because they were out of new shirts to sell and he was just all around a great person to talk to. I was having the best experience. Top it off, the morning of my first session I actually saw Bob Roberts in person. So much good was happening I couldn’t care less about the misspelling. He also had shown me the drawing several times and I missed it. But he fixed it and apologized. My approach to tattooing is that it’s done by real people in real time. Of course aim for the best. But when mistakes happen, it’s okay. Worst case scenario you can black it out or get laser removal. But the memories around getting tattoos should be forever.

The tattoo was clearly overworked and the artist blocked the client on everything. That’s suspicious. I 100% don’t believe the customer cursed at her either.

    I'm glad that people aren't too hard on the artists, I'm a graphic designer and it's so easy to unsee mistakes when you've been staring at something for hours! You're focused on a million other things, spelling is up to the copywriters, and I think with tattoo artists, the client should should stop and ask, did we both spellcheck that? The client need to take some responsibility for what goes on their own body.

    📒As a tattoo artist, I've mispelled a few things. I was in spelling bees when I was a kid, and in honors classes all throughout schooling, so it's not a skill issue. The issue is when people give me mispellings or expect me to know the correct spelling of a language I don't speak. I've tattooed the name "Magdlena" on someone because she swore up and down that was her mother's name, but came back a week later wondering if we could change it to Magdalena. I tattooed an Lozengra when it was supposed to be Lozengara (client was drunk, and claimed it was spelled right). I've tattooed the wrong death date for someone's child even though I ALWAYS have people check the paper twice, check the stencil, I read it back to them, I hand them the paper and let them hold it for a moment. I do literally everything in my power to make sure I am not making a mistake, but it's always the clients. Then they try to blame it on me, despite me giving them multiple chances to change the tattoo before it's permanent...

  • @_Brandi
    @_Brandi 6 місяців тому +6

    I work in a private studio so we don’t get many walk ins and are responsible for our own schedules so I can’t relate to that stress. But every time I’ve ever done lettering, dates or names I make the client check it at least 5 times. I send the design days before, have them check it when they come to the shop, and again once the stencil is on. I probably annoy them I ask them to check again so many times 🫨 I always stress to them that once I tattoo it, I can’t change the spelling. It’s genuinely one of my biggest fears as a tattoo artist. I like to think myself good at spelling, but the simplest words start to look strange if you look at them too long and I totally get how this could happen.

    Hi Celle. I recently came across your channel and I'm hooked! 😁 I personally think that it's the artist's duty and responsibility to make sure that a word is spelled correctly before tattooing it. This is for their own benefit and protection, as well as their client's.
    Just a quick chat with the client about the word or phrase desired, followed by a spell check would clarify things. Also, if the artist notices that a client has spelled a word incorrectly, they should point that out to the client before proceeding. Of course, if the client wants it spelled incorrectly, then that's up to them, but the artist should have that in writing!

  • @TreesNotBeach
    @TreesNotBeach 6 місяців тому +16

    I don't 100% agree with the "tattoo artists have lives outside work, kids, etc, so they can get flustered, nervous, have tons of things on their mind". Yes, lives can an impact on their work but they are tattoing something that stays on the body for years. They have to make sure that what they're doing is correct.
    Would you want your doctor to be like "Ohh, got a small kid at home so I can barely hold my eyes open, I'll just poke you several times until I find veins..." No, you wouldn't.
    If an artist owns up the mistake, it's all good. But if they're making the same mistake over and over again, or getting all pissy when mistake is pointed out, then they gotta stop being an tattoo artist.

    lol my first tattoo i ever got was a ship with the name "ong ong" (a reference to a blur song), my tattoo artist printed the stencil out and placed it on me, but one of the words was missing a letter so i pointed it out. maybe its bc i was a huge fan of tattoo culture before i even got my first tattoo, it was a no brainer to me to throughly look and point out the mistake. luckily she put the missing letter back in with no problem!
    i think it's the duty of both the artist and the person getting the tattoo to ensure everything is spelt correctly, bc its two sets of eyes monitoring it. like yeah there are ways to cover up or alter a tattoo after the fact, or even in the first case you mentioned have it be hilarious -- but to berate an artist after you waived any responsibility on their part is completely irresponsible on your part :// tattooing is a mutual transaction that should be handled with respect on both ends!

    the stencil hadn't even been placed yet but he couldn't believe a spelling mistake got through so many steps.

    but the other day i was on instagram and this tattoo artist i follow posted a story with the next text tattoo she was going to do and i immediately realized it was a song title and that it was misspelled, so i quickly dmed her. she didn't know it was a song title, so even though the quote was gramatically correct, it wasn't the actual title of the song, and the client didn't catch it either (this was definitely on the client i think).

My local studio has had some really wonderful young women come and go as apprentices over the years (small shop so often they'll move on to something bigger). As an artist and a woman myself I feel totally honoured to be able to give other young women the chance to develop their craft. So I could never care if every line isn't perfect or if the ink doesn't hold in quite the same as some of my other tattoos. I got my thumb tattooed by my local's current apprentice recently and it was her first time doing a hand tattoo. That's invaluable to me. And she killed it btw it looks great. I'll always be happy to take a chance on young artists.

  • @meggy0
    @meggy0 6 місяців тому +3

    For me, the difference is in the design process, the first girls brought the sketch in, and you could see how the artist just took that and went with it, thinking of it more as a design than looking at the lettering/spelling, and he as you said, he likely didn't type it out, so it is much more understandable. In the second one, it was impromptu, and the client asked the artist if she could do that, and she said yes, and that is what makes it more on the artist in my opinion. She did the design, and with the line through it, it is a little harder to catch, and I know I would probably be more focused on the placement/font then really looking at the lettering. The client should not have spoken to her like she did, and I don't think it's all the artists fault, but that one for me is more murky.

    I'm sympathetic to these artists (especially seeing how upset they are) & I understand that mistakes happen, especially in the case of a client giving something handwritten, but this is a permanent piece on someone's body; there needs to be responsibly on both client & artist. I also sympathize that tattoo artists have a lot on their plates, but so does everyone else. When I worked with graphic design, yes, it was our job to design, but if that design had text, we had to make sure everything was spelled correctly & sounded cohesive; otherwise, we correct it or bring it to the client's attention to make sure that's how they really wanted it to read. If the client is in a hurry, they need to be slowed down, or you aren't the right artist for them; don't let the client be detrimental to the outcome. In the end, tattoo artists can save themselves a lot of trouble & grief by making sure any instances of typos are confirmed & signed off by the client as correct or fixed. It will also help them be more efficient & professional. Will this prevent all mistakes, no, but it can prevent most.

    I totally understand how these mistakes can happen. I got a tattoo of a blueberry branch and the blueberries ended up backwards (like with the "crown" part by the stem rather than on the end where theyre supposed to be) I sent my artist reference pics and was so excited for the tattoo and focused on the placement that i didnt notice the detail of the berries. I trusted my tattoo artist to do it correctly because i sent her references, but i also know i should have double checked it was correct myself. I wasnt mad at her but the situation did suck for both of us. She was super nice and apologetic when i noticed and she did her best to cover it up and fix it for free. At the end of the day, this is a risk of getting permanent art on your body. Tattoo artists are human and mistakes are bound to happen. Yes, it is the artists responsibility to be careful and check the designs, but im also sympathetic to these artists who make mistakes sometimes.
