@@Hater20X I had thought about the blackout for a coverup for years before I finally did it. To me, blackouts aren’t some little thing- my arm now makes me extremely happy versus what I had for far too long. I am also a 40 year old woman who did NOT go to a shop and do it spur of the moment. Blackouts like mine can be extremely personal and there are always methods to alter it with color if I wanted to go that route, but not anytime soon.
I do just want to point out one thing with Kat von D: even though she was born in Mexico, all four of her grandparents emigrated to South America from Germany in the 1940s. They did so because they had been affiliated with a certain political party that was not in favor anymore. I was going to say the same thing as the person above. It isn’t similar at all. Of course there are people with very dark skin, but even the darkest person I have ever seen doesn’t look anything like a blackout. Blackouts tend to look flat once they’re healed, like you see in the photos of Kat’s arms. That’s not how black people look 😂
When it comes to blackout tattoos, I don't think you could call it blackface, because if you could do the same effect with another color i'm sure people would, but black is the only thing that's going to cover tattoos. It's the only choice people have when they're in a situation where they can't laser, and they can't cover.
Look up Ephemeral Remy. He had a full body black out and in the last couple years has begun going over it in red/new tattoos. Black out is not the only solution for coverage or blast overs and blacking stuff out is not the end of the road as far as tattooing goes any more.
My favorite blackout is Davey Havok, it's so well done with little bits of his old stuff peaking through, not to erase the past but just grown out of it

Considering the potential you could get locked up in a mental hospital, and treated horrible once youre there, I COMPLETELY understand not seeing a therapist if there is even just a slight risk. If there was a 100% anonymous (even towards the therapist) way too seek therapy that would change a lot. It makes me anxious, too. I recently spoke to a woman who has some tattoos who went in to have her breast implants removed. Her surgeon told her that when he went in, he noticed that a lot of her lymph nodes are full of black ink. He told her he definitely doesn’t recommend getting anymore tattoos, bc it’s already negatively impacting her health.

As a poc, this is crazy to me that anyone thinks this is cultural appropriation or has racial tones, like the only ickness is when white people think they can draw that conclusion or “bring up the conversation” for brownie points. The only real cultural appropriation in the tattoo industry is the millions of white boys with complete Japanese(Asian) body work or sleeves, which there is way more of than black out tattoos. And the funny thing about that is that most Asian people and Asian artists actually love it because it shows unity and breaks division, shows embracing of culture.

Most of us are tatted, too, myself included. Never once in a decade did I ever get a call because of tattoos, unless it was a cardiac, cancer, or psych patient that happened to have them. Veins still pop out visibly, even with tattoos, we're trained specifically around them, and always gauge by palpating. I also just had a rare tumor, precursor to melanoma ( my Nana passed from Metastatic Melanoma), in January at 36. I have the ability, though heavily tattooed, to navigate and tattoo around most of them. I have two more that I see dermatology tomorrow about biopsies, and sending out to State research hospital. Fifteen stitches with a chunk outta my calf, just tattooed a blade with a woman inside, on the thigh the same leg to celebrate. Hope this helps, and totally understand wondering how tf it's done. 🤘😘🔥
@@ulrikesextro4187it's really not that bad as far as that goes. I've had a black out sleeve for over 8 years now. About 6 years ago my appendix ruptured and I had to have emergency surgery. I was in the hospital for around 2 weeks. Got needle poked alot in that time and they never had an issue finding veins. That's just my experience with it.
I don't have any tattoos because I always felt like there's nothing I would want on me "for-ev-er" and I'd want to change them at some point, so I think can already understand it on some level and it's really cool to see and hear the thought processes of these people with lots of them. Basically sharing examples of it being OK and fine to want to change your appearance at whatever point you feel like it no longer aligns with who you are or aspire to be! But with the blacking out the whole bodies, I'm black myself and I doooon't know how I feel about it becoming a trend lol, so that will be interesting to see what societal implications/questions arise out of that if it becomes a "mainstream" thing, but I can see why people find it offputting. I could definitely see celebrities doing this as a way to differentiate themselves and I could imagine at some point as even blackout becomes normalized that we could see more people doing body modification like that The Black Alien Project guy. I've followed him for a bit and it's weird that for some reason I never thought about him being in blackface even though his whole face and body is literally black, but I think it's because the body mods he's done on top of blacking out his skin are so jarring that it's not appropriative (to me) because he's almost trying to get away from being perceived as human at all? 😅
Well you talk about the forever but once you get to this point there is not turning back or even really being able to change anything. Also over time I think ink covering your entire body is probably not the best for it, especially as you get older and you have a lot more issue with dry skin and wrinkles and this will fade over time. Of course the lifestyle these people live he may not be around in 20 to 30 years to worry about it.
Would henna tattoos be too close to your skin tone to be noticeable? They last for only a few weeks, but I don't know if the ink has more than one shade/color.

Latin culture a colonizing culture in the same way Anglo culture is (please see the Indigenous boy in Mexico who was set on fire by his Latino classmates for speaking his native language a few years ago). The only difference between Latino & Anglo colonizing cultures is Latinos committed far more instances of sexual abuse of Natives where they then legitimized the children of & integrated them into their culture while still abusing the mother. "Índia pega no laço"'s wide usage is a prime example of how normalized abuse of natives has always been in Latino culture since it's inception.

A new study shows 93% of statistics are wrong. It's a joke, but the point is I don't believe 22%. Every person I know has tattoos. Even children, if they don't have them already,they tell me they will when they are old enough. When I see anyone without a visible tat,I notice. It is rare.
I agree with you, I really don't think it's more common to be "tattooed" than not. I mean, sure, I've seen a lot more visible tattoos and even *some heavily tattooed (arms, hands, neck, some face) people - but very FEW heavily tattooed people. I'm an older woman (62) and I started getting tattooed about 30 years ago (I know! crazy) with only a few, easy to hide, smaller tattoos. Then after I was 50 and working for myself (now I'm retired), I finally started getting the tattoos I wanted to get. Now I have a 2/3 sleeve and a 3/4 sleeve, my lower legs are covered and I'm planning a full back piece. Shockingly, I am not stared at with my arms showing. I only once got the stink eye from an older (older than me) man. I also am an American living in Europe. It is very nice not to be stared at, but I'm a little shocked, tbh that no one stares as I am the only older woman I've seen (IRL) that is this tattooed. I KNOW there are a lot of older women more heavily tattooed than me, but I haven't seen them IRL - even in a tattoo shop. I don't get tattooed to be "different" - I get tattooed because they fascinate me and I love the art. I agree I don't think tattoos are SUPER common - unless you are talking about little tattoos that a lot of people get that you can't even see (easily hidden, etc.).
I think it might depend on the region of the country and age. I’m in Orange County/ So Cal and feel like 22% sounds about right, and that’s just the visible tattoos (not accounting for 🦋 on the hip, etc). Of those 22%, I say 10% are heavily inked: necks, arms, legs. It’s not my thing but I can appreciate the artistry.
I kind of feel like blacking out tattoos is equal to a person admitting that they made a mistake when getting something PERMANENTLY placed on their body. Like, I understand changing and evolving. But getting MORE tattoos to cover up MISTAKE tattoos…. Eh?
As someone with chronic pain that controls every hour of my life, I feel a little icky about the idea of intentionally going through the pain of these blackout tattoos and coming out the other side a “different person”. But I can’t articulate even to myself exactly why I was a little taken aback. This is focusing on a totally different subject than the idea of blackface. This is my reflection on the portion that’s supposedly about seeking the very experience of pain itself and the tattoo being permanent results that a show off that pain one went through (if one chose not to be numbed or put under.) People have every right to do things to their bodies as part of self-expression, their self-discovery, their life’s journey. So I can’t place why I wasn’t impressed to hear about going through temporary intense pain with a very obvious visible display of that painful experience as the goal. Though actually, the way I just phrased it, it kinda got closer for myself. My suffering produces ugliness that will gnarl and scar my body forever. My body and suffering isn’t an artistic choice, and I guess maybe I’m jealous they have that privilege to choose. But they *should* have that privilege to choose. Pain, particularly chronic pain with no end in sight, has been especially consuming me lately, so I’m extra thoughtful and maybe a little too sensitive about it. There’s a nationwide Dilaudid shortage and my pain management has been catastrophically disrupted for several months in a row, which is extremely stressful. So there’s some anger inside me about my inability to escape pain, then seeing people *choose pain* for some allegedly deeply personal reason - but then seeing the people who choose it who are pretty infamously problematic and impulsive and good at saying BS. But I need to remember, it’s still personal. It’s their body. I’m just very aware of the vast difference in our varied relationships with pain.

I have had chronic pain for many years and unfortunately I have a failed knee replacement and being in pain 24/7 has only made my chronic pain worse, but I still sat through 4 sessions for my blackout sleeve. I finally did it to cover old things that I hated almost from the moment I had gotten them 8 years ago. It DID change me because it has allowed me to feel freedom and finally feel confident to show my arm again. The pain is temporary in respect to the actual tattooing and it’s vastly different from what I feel every single day.
Also, this reads so “well my life is so much worse than theirs and I can’t believe they would ever voice their opinion on what they thought going through this process”. I’m sorry you’re in the same boat as so many of us, but your whole rant is cringe.

I also dealt with S-H in my early 20s, along with Anorexia, because I was so angry and felt so out of control over my own body, and I wanted to grasp whatever sense of control I could. Not eating made me feel in control, and S-H made me feel a bit of power over pain. And maybe that’s what they’re doing here? They just really really want to show off those “S-H scars” as artistic, rather than hide them and try to prevent scarring like I did? I’m really trying to understand them and give them some sort of respect and understanding, I guess, beyond just being consistent in my support of freedom to do what they want with their bodies. But I’m so conflicted. And I want to point out that I recognize I’m only thinking in terms of our society and culture, not those where intentional suffering and scarring are a part of an established, meaningful coming-of-age ritual and life experience. That is different and separate. Here at hand, I think the privilege displayed by extreme blackouts is insulting for people like us. Even though we recognize that we want people to have that freedom with their bodies, we feel the gulf between their privilege and our lack of freedom to choose or reject pain. Pain is a permanent parasite for many people with chronic conditions. It sucks the life out of you, it even ravages appearance separately from the damage done by the disease that’s causing the pain, because pain ages. Pain consumes. It doesn’t make artistic statements. I hope your personal struggles have lessened, and you’re not suffering as much. ❤️

I’m someone who cares deeply about my tattoos and why I will never regret a single one as they are more like ‘time stamps’ in my life. Not everyone would like my tattoos but that doesn’t matter. I get frustrated by people who rush into tattoos, especially the fads, then give tattoos a bad name because they now regret theirs. I know little about MGK but he did his without anesthesia (nipples even) and the blackout is symbolic to him. It’s like tribal tattoos that were all the rage and now no one wants EXCEPT for the legit tribal tattoos some people have that get viewed crazily because they have them simply because tribal tattoos overall get a bad rap.
Yup- as someone who never wants to regret a single tattoo and only get's things that shout "ME!!", I can't imagine removing anything. I want my skin to be indicative of myself over my life. People that always talk about spirituality are messed up folks that has made a lot of bad decisions. Those initial tattoos bring bad awful memories but blacking out will just be another constant reminder of their fcked up life in the future.
I'm really NOT a fan of blackout tattoos. But then, I'm not going to get them, so it really doesn't matter in the end. Does it change how I treat people? No. First approach maybe, but I'm autistic, so I have difficulties approaching anyone I don't know. How I treat people depends on how they behave. Both towards me and towards others. What you do with your own body is completely up to you.

@@soude85 I agree. This style comes from the Polynesians and South Asians (I'm not sure who actually created the tattooing) so it's been around a long time. Also, I didn't say that he was the first in the US to ever have blackouts done. Just among famous people, he was there before this trend.

Just a thought cause sometimes i like looking up a certain celebs styles but i find the articles online filled with loads of pointless writing and pop up adverts. Or they leave out photos or just focus on ONE tattoo that might have went wrong. (Realised this when i was trying to see what recent tattoos cara delevigne had got but the articles kept going on about a spelling mistake) Would be cool to have them laid out and discussed on this type of platform. I don't know if it was a maturity thing, but I got my first tattoo at 25 years old. For me at least, I think waiting later in my life to settle into who I would become in life. Made my tattoos actually mean something significant to me. For a longer period of time. Rather than, " This is who I am this year so put it on me permanently." What Kat VonDee did was saying " I no longer like my tattoos I got when I was younger" "So, let's put something else on me that I feel I am now." Case and point why I waited to settle into myself first. To avoid that very situation.
I didn’t get the blackface comparisons until 14:20 because blackouts are usually pretty obviously not a skin tone, but I didn’t even think of it fading to the point it genuinely does look like actual blackface 😬
Just want to point out that blackface did not represent the actual skintone of Black people. Blackface performers used burnt cork, shoe polish, and grease paint. All of which were obviously not actual human skintone. The comparison is there (both used black paint) but it's not warranted.

Really interesting video. This is probably TLTR for most, but here it is. Anyway, aside from MGK's problematic issues with underage girls and also Kat Von D's previous (and current?) issues, I actually like the look of MGK's blackout especially. It has a bit of a very precise blastover in spots with very clean negative lines in the piece. I think it looks pretty cool. I haven't seen Kat's finished blackout, but so far, I'm not as much of a fan of hers. The one piece I saw of the man who is almost completely covered in black, except for his head, hands and feet gives me the ick - and it doesn't look like he's getting old tattoos covered, it looks like he's going for the look of being all black. I feel that's quite different than people getting a more blastover style black out with at least, skin breaks here and there or just parts of the body covered in black - not most of it covered. I like the look of the negative space (with some old tattoos peeking through) a blackout piece. It did take a while to grow on me. At first, I didn't like blackouts at all! Finally, the "black" issue is a tough one, because black ink just happens to be the best color at covering old tattoos. If you have fresh skin, it would be interesting if someone would go with some non-racial color like, blue or green, light purple? I want to say red (but for Native Americans and other cultures). It's true that the conversation on cultural appropriation can become too much. However, equating it to skin color and hair color, all of which isn't a cultural thing, just genetics and phenotypes is just as ridiculous. You could have said something like a Black person wearing traditional German clothes or Sami clothing.

"Cultural appropriation" has actually always been a difficult topic. Because ppl loving cultures anf aspects and also re-mixing them is very normal human creativity. It would not be as much of a problem if we sorted out the actual problems, which is discrimination and inequality and exploitation of ppl. There's no problem in having spaces that are traditional and others that are a wild mix. The true problem is that groups of people get discriminated against and are naturally trying to hold themselves together through that struggle. It's "boundary setting in areas of fewer consequences in the absence of possibilities to see boundaries respected where they truly matter the most". It's a trauma response and an understandable one. AND we can't stay stuck there no matter what side of that issue we find ourselves on.

I’m a Black person who is heavily tattooed and full body blackout does make me uncomfortable but I can’t exactly put my finger on why. I got a blackout tattoo back in 2015 so I’m not bothered by portions of the body being blacked out at all ….🧐 I need to think about it more. 🐙

For me, being spam called in nearly any form freaks me out- my partner or a telemarketer makes no difference, I can feel anxiety or panic attacks from this! But it doesn't mean the *intent* of the spammer is bad (like it was for the spammer of my past), so if I learn the spam calling from my partner was to try and warn me of something at home I tend to relax and try to push past that discomfort. For telemarketers, not so much as I remain rightfully upset. I feel like this might be a scenario like that...? Triggers have no rhyme or reason, if it hurts *IT HURTS*. The intent seems to be the thing that causes real harm and anything else it then falls to abuse victims to learn to be ok with in some regard. *Obviously* black trauma has more nuance as to it being ok to feel off-put by this sorta of stuff 😅 Way more daily implications for y'all. As far as further opinions on blackout pieces go: I see them as the tattoo industry’s answer to extreme body modification. There’s so many ways to extremely modify oneself, and blackout is one of them. Ofc as someone who got a blackout piece I have a biased positive opinion of them though. When it comes to trend cycles I do fear that people will start getting blackouts without fully thinking it through or considering how intense it is. It’s an extremely physically grueling tattoo to get no matter the placement, and there is truly no changing your mind later. It’s not to be taken lightly at all

When I first saw a photo blackout, I thought it was so beautiful and had a great punk essence to it. In-person, it's jarring. Time will tell if this takes off in the mainstream, tattoed on ppl other than artists, creatives, tattoo enthusiasts, etc.
I see no issues with black work if that’s what the person wants, then go for it. The picture you used for the whole body black out in the white traditional Japanese undergarments (fundoshi) is clearly a former yakuza. Tattoos in Japan are linked to the criminal underworld and blacking out his tattoos is a clear sign of him being done with the yakuza life style. It has nothing to do with culture appropriation.

To me, blackouts aren’t some little thing- my arm now makes me extremely happy versus what I had for far too long. I am also a 40 year old woman who did NOT go to a shop and do it spur of the moment. Blackouts like mine can be extremely personal and there are always methods to alter it with color if I wanted to go that route, but not anytime soon.

Blackouts tend to look flat once they’re healed, like you see in the photos of Kat’s arms. That’s not how black people look 😂

When it comes to blackout tattoos, I don't think you could call it blackface, because if you could do the same effect with another color i'm sure people would, but black is the only thing that's going to cover tattoos. It's the only choice people have when they're in a situation where they can't laser, and they can't cover.
I’ve seen plenty of black people with various skin tones who have blackouts and it looks pretty much the same on everyone.
Look up Ephemeral Remy. He had a full body black out and in the last couple years has begun going over it in red/new tattoos. Black out is not the only solution for coverage or blast overs and blacking stuff out is not the end of the road as far as tattooing goes any more.

I was thinking about that, too. Gabby Hannah (I have no idea how her vid ended up in my feed) was talking about all the heavy metals in tattoos and I was reminded, oh yeah, it's not all good and benign.
It makes me anxious, too. I recently spoke to a woman who has some tattoos who went in to have her breast implants removed. Her surgeon told her that when he went in, he noticed that a lot of her lymph nodes are full of black ink. He told her he definitely doesn’t recommend getting anymore tattoos, bc it’s already negatively impacting her health.

Everyone who is not white is okay to have traditional tribal art on their bodies? Because ALL black people have roots to native Islanders, South Americans, Indians, Alaskan, Slavic and Norse, etc.
no not just white people. millions of people cannot include tribal tattoos in their cultural heritage there are different groups than white and brown 😅 You probably just only notice famous white people being called out about tribal designs from cultures they don't hail from.
As a poc, this is crazy to me that anyone thinks this is cultural appropriation or has racial tones, like the only ickness is when white people think they can draw that conclusion or “bring up the conversation” for brownie points.
The only real cultural appropriation in the tattoo industry is the millions of white boys with complete Japanese(Asian) body work or sleeves, which there is way more of than black out tattoos. And the funny thing about that is that most Asian people and Asian artists actually love it because it shows unity and breaks division, shows embracing of culture.

@@ulrikesextro4187 Fun fact: As a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, we draw the patients that nursing staff have a difficult time with for any number of reasons. Most of us are tatted, too, myself included. Never once in a decade did I ever get a call because of tattoos, unless it was a cardiac, cancer, or psych patient that happened to have them. Veins still pop out visibly, even with tattoos, we're trained specifically around them, and always gauge by palpating. I also just had a rare tumor, precursor to melanoma ( my Nana passed from Metastatic Melanoma), in January at 36.
I have the ability, though heavily tattooed, to navigate and tattoo around most of them. I have two more that I see dermatology tomorrow about biopsies, and sending out to State research hospital. Fifteen stitches with a chunk outta my calf, just tattooed a blade with a woman inside, on the thigh the same leg to celebrate.

@@ulrikesextro4187it's really not that bad as far as that goes. I've had a black out sleeve for over 8 years now. About 6 years ago my appendix ruptured and I had to have emergency surgery. I was in the hospital for around 2 weeks. Got needle poked alot in that time and they never had an issue finding veins. That's just my experience with it.

I don't have any tattoos because I always felt like there's nothing I would want on me "for-ev-er" and I'd want to change them at some point, so I think can already understand it on some level and it's really cool to see and hear the thought processes of these people with lots of them.
Basically sharing examples of it being OK and fine to want to change your appearance at whatever point you feel like it no longer aligns with who you are or aspire to be!
But with the blacking out the whole bodies, I'm black myself and I doooon't know how I feel about it becoming a trend lol, so that will be interesting to see what societal implications/questions arise out of that if it becomes a "mainstream" thing, but I can see why people find it offputting.
I could definitely see celebrities doing this as a way to differentiate themselves and I could imagine at some point as even blackout becomes normalized that we could see more people doing body modification like that The Black Alien Project guy. I've followed him for a bit and it's weird that for some reason I never thought about him being in blackface even though his whole face and body is literally black, but I think it's because the body mods he's done on top of blacking out his skin are so jarring that it's not appropriative (to me) because he's almost trying to get away from being perceived as human at all? 😅
Well you talk about the forever but once you get to this point there is not turning back or even really being able to change anything. Also over time I think ink covering your entire body is probably not the best for it, especially as you get older and you have a lot more issue with dry skin and wrinkles and this will fade over time. Of course the lifestyle these people live he may not be around in 20 to 30 years to worry about it.
Would henna tattoos be too close to your skin tone to be noticeable? They last for only a few weeks, but I don't know if the ink has more than one shade/color.

"Latino" is a cultural term that is widely used by the people who it's attached to because it doesn't denote a specific nationality, race, ethnicity. It indicates a cultural connection Latino racial demographics are highly historically mixed & vary depending on the country & region of origin. Latinos as a standard are mixed race to varying degrees depending on the country/region however because it's a cultural term you can be Asian, Black, or White & still be "Latino" if you were raised in that culture because it's a cultural denotation...that's it.
Latin culture a colonizing culture in the same way Anglo culture is (please see the Indigenous boy in Mexico who was set on fire by his Latino classmates for speaking his native language a few years ago). The only difference between Latino & Anglo colonizing cultures is Latinos committed far more instances of sexual abuse of Natives where they then legitimized the children of & integrated them into their culture while still abusing the mother. "Índia pega no laço"'s wide usage is a prime example of how normalized abuse of natives has always been in Latino culture since it's inception.

as a heavily tatted girly i can say that even if tattoos are way more common now, most people still don't have the typical job stoppers so even if 22% of americans have more than one tattoo, it's still most likely being a butterfly on the hip, or a rose and 777 on the arm and there is nothing wrong with that, but ppl saying it's more different to NOT have tattoos these days just makes me so angry. then why do i still get stared at and discriminated? i'm very happy tattoos are getting more common, but we're not anywhere near this person thinks
A new study shows 93% of statistics are wrong. It's a joke, but the point is I don't believe 22%. Every person I know has tattoos. Even children, if they don't have them already,they tell me they will when they are old enough. When I see anyone without a visible tat,I notice. It is rare.
I agree with you, I really don't think it's more common to be "tattooed" than not. I mean, sure, I've seen a lot more visible tattoos and even *some heavily tattooed (arms, hands, neck, some face) people - but very FEW heavily tattooed people. I'm an older woman (62) and I started getting tattooed about 30 years ago (I know! crazy) with only a few, easy to hide, smaller tattoos. Then after I was 50 and working for myself (now I'm retired), I finally started getting the tattoos I wanted to get. Now I have a 2/3 sleeve and a 3/4 sleeve, my lower legs are covered and I'm planning a full back piece. Shockingly, I am not stared at with my arms showing. I only once got the stink eye from an older (older than me) man. I also am an American living in Europe. It is very nice not to be stared at, but I'm a little shocked, tbh that no one stares as I am the only older woman I've seen (IRL) that is this tattooed. I KNOW there are a lot of older women more heavily tattooed than me, but I haven't seen them IRL - even in a tattoo shop. I don't get tattooed to be "different" - I get tattooed because they fascinate me and I love the art. I agree I don't think tattoos are SUPER common - unless you are talking about little tattoos that a lot of people get that you can't even see (easily hidden, etc.).
I think it might depend on the region of the country and age. I’m in Orange County/ So Cal and feel like 22% sounds about right, and that’s just the visible tattoos (not accounting for 🦋 on the hip, etc). Of those 22%, I say 10% are heavily inked: necks, arms, legs. It’s not my thing but I can appreciate the artistry.
I kind of feel like blacking out tattoos is equal to a person admitting that they made a mistake when getting something PERMANENTLY placed on their body. Like, I understand changing and evolving. But getting MORE tattoos to cover up MISTAKE tattoos…. Eh?

As someone with chronic pain that controls every hour of my life, I feel a little icky about the idea of intentionally going through the pain of these blackout tattoos and coming out the other side a “different person”. But I can’t articulate even to myself exactly why I was a little taken aback. This is focusing on a totally different subject than the idea of blackface. This is my reflection on the portion that’s supposedly about seeking the very experience of pain itself and the tattoo being permanent results that a show off that pain one went through (if one chose not to be numbed or put under.) People have every right to do things to their bodies as part of self-expression, their self-discovery, their life’s journey. So I can’t place why I wasn’t impressed to hear about going through temporary intense pain with a very obvious visible display of that painful experience as the goal.
Though actually, the way I just phrased it, it kinda got closer for myself. My suffering produces ugliness that will gnarl and scar my body forever. My body and suffering isn’t an artistic choice, and I guess maybe I’m jealous they have that privilege to choose. But they *should* have that privilege to choose.
Pain, particularly chronic pain with no end in sight, has been especially consuming me lately, so I’m extra thoughtful and maybe a little too sensitive about it. There’s a nationwide Dilaudid shortage and my pain management has been catastrophically disrupted for several months in a row, which is extremely stressful. So there’s some anger inside me about my inability to escape pain, then seeing people *choose pain* for some allegedly deeply personal reason - but then seeing the people who choose it who are pretty infamously problematic and impulsive and good at saying BS. But I need to remember, it’s still personal. It’s their body. I’m just very aware of the vast difference in our varied relationships with pain.
this. i feel like it’s such a privileged way to think about pain, and as someone who has also dealt with chronic pain and s-h, the idea that intentionally causing yourself serious pain makes you “stronger” or more spiritual is *deeply* disturbing to me, even if it’s a personal choice
I have had chronic pain for many years and unfortunately I have a failed knee replacement and being in pain 24/7 has only made my chronic pain worse, but I still sat through 4 sessions for my blackout sleeve. I finally did it to cover old things that I hated almost from the moment I had gotten them 8 years ago. It DID change me because it has allowed me to feel freedom and finally feel confident to show my arm again. The pain is temporary in respect to the actual tattooing and it’s vastly different from what I feel every single day.
Also, this reads so “well my life is so much worse than theirs and I can’t believe they would ever voice their opinion on what they thought going through this process”. I’m sorry you’re in the same boat as so many of us, but your whole rant is cringe.

I also dealt with S-H in my early 20s, along with Anorexia, because I was so angry and felt so out of control over my own body, and I wanted to grasp whatever sense of control I could. Not eating made me feel in control, and S-H made me feel a bit of power over pain. And maybe that’s what they’re doing here? They just really really want to show off those “S-H scars” as artistic, rather than hide them and try to prevent scarring like I did? I’m really trying to understand them and give them some sort of respect and understanding, I guess, beyond just being consistent in my support of freedom to do what they want with their bodies. But I’m so conflicted.
And I want to point out that I recognize I’m only thinking in terms of our society and culture, not those where intentional suffering and scarring are a part of an established, meaningful coming-of-age ritual and life experience. That is different and separate. Here at hand, I think the privilege displayed by extreme blackouts is insulting for people like us. Even though we recognize that we want people to have that freedom with their bodies, we feel the gulf between their privilege and our lack of freedom to choose or reject pain. Pain is a permanent parasite for many people with chronic conditions. It sucks the life out of you, it even ravages appearance separately from the damage done by the disease that’s causing the pain, because pain ages. Pain consumes. It doesn’t make artistic statements.
I hope your personal struggles have lessened, and you’re not suffering as much. ❤️

I’m someone who cares deeply about my tattoos and why I will never regret a single one as they are more like ‘time stamps’ in my life. Not everyone would like my tattoos but that doesn’t matter. I get frustrated by people who rush into tattoos, especially the fads, then give tattoos a bad name because they now regret theirs. I know little about MGK but he did his without anesthesia (nipples even) and the blackout is symbolic to him. It’s like tribal tattoos that were all the rage and now no one wants EXCEPT for the legit tribal tattoos some people have that get viewed crazily because they have them simply because tribal tattoos overall get a bad rap.
Yup- as someone who never wants to regret a single tattoo and only get's things that shout "ME!!", I can't imagine removing anything. I want my skin to be indicative of myself over my life. I also kinda wanna let them all fade without touch-ups to show my age and my own brand of pride in my body and time :) But ik others may be different.

People that always talk about spirituality are messed up folks that has made a lot of bad decisions. Those initial tattoos bring bad awful memories but blacking out will just be another constant reminder of their fcked up life in the future.
I'm really NOT a fan of blackout tattoos. But then, I'm not going to get them, so it really doesn't matter in the end. Does it change how I treat people? No. First approach maybe, but I'm autistic, so I have difficulties approaching anyone I don't know. How I treat people depends on how they behave. Both towards me and towards others. What you do with your own body is completely up to you.

Blackout tattoos as last option, to cover old/bad ones, have always been around. However, the number of people getting “blackouts” as their primary tattoo choice, has definitely grown. I think that’s absolutely weird…
@@soude85 I agree. This style comes from the Polynesians and South Asians (I'm not sure who actually created the tattooing) so it's been around a long time. Also, I didn't say that he was the first in the US to ever have blackouts done. Just among famous people, he was there before this trend.

Just a thought cause sometimes i like looking up a certain celebs styles but i find the articles online filled with loads of pointless writing and pop up adverts. Or they leave out photos or just focus on ONE tattoo that might have went wrong. (Realised this when i was trying to see what recent tattoos cara delevigne had got but the articles kept going on about a spelling mistake)

I don't know if it was a maturity thing, but I got my first tattoo at 25 years old. For me at least, I think waiting later in my life to settle into who I would become in life. Made my tattoos actually mean something significant to me. For a longer period of time. Rather than, " This is who I am this year so put it on me permanently."
What Kat VonDee did was saying " I no longer like my tattoos I got when I was younger" "So, let's put something else on me that I feel I am now."
Case and point why I waited to settle into myself first. To avoid that very situation.

Just want to point out that blackface did not represent the actual skintone of Black people. Blackface performers used burnt cork, shoe polish, and grease paint. All of which were obviously not actual human skintone. The comparison is there (both used black paint) but it's not warranted.

Really interesting video. This is probably TLTR for most, but here it is. Anyway, aside from MGK's problematic issues with underage girls and also Kat Von D's previous (and current?) issues, I actually like the look of MGK's blackout especially. It has a bit of a very precise blastover in spots with very clean negative lines in the piece. I think it looks pretty cool. I haven't seen Kat's finished blackout, but so far, I'm not as much of a fan of hers. But I see why some heavily tattooed people are getting them as it's the easiest (if painful and many sessions) way to get unwanted (or grown out of) tattoos covered.
I really shouldn't comment on the racial connection with the blackout as I'm white - but I can't help myself to make a few comments. The one piece I saw of the man who is almost completely covered in black, except for his head, hands and feet gives me the ick - and it doesn't look like he's getting old tattoos covered, it looks like he's going for the look of being all black.
I feel that's quite different than people getting a more blastover style black out with at least, skin breaks here and there or just parts of the body covered in black - not most of it covered. I like the look of the negative space (with some old tattoos peeking through) a blackout piece. It did take a while to grow on me. At first, I didn't like blackouts at all!
Finally, the "black" issue is a tough one, because black ink just happens to be the best color at covering old tattoos. If you have fresh skin, it would be interesting if someone would go with some non-racial color like, blue or green, light purple? I want to say red (but for Native Americans and other cultures). Cultural appropriation is ridiculous sometimes. Some black people wear blue contacts and have blonde hair. The argument can be never ending.
It's true that the conversation on cultural appropriation can become too much. However, equating it to skin color and hair color, all of which isn't a cultural thing, just genetics and phenotypes is just as ridiculous. You could have said something like a Black person wearing traditional German clothes or Sami clothing.

"Cultural appropriation" has actually always been a difficult topic. Because ppl loving cultures anf aspects and also re-mixing them is very normal human creativity.
It would not be as much of a problem if we sorted out the actual problems, which is discrimination and inequality and exploitation of ppl.
There's no problem in having spaces that are traditional and others that are a wild mix. The true problem is that groups of people get discriminated against and are naturally trying to hold themselves together through that struggle. It's "boundary setting in areas of fewer consequences in the absence of possibilities to see boundaries respected where they truly matter the most".
It's a trauma response and an understandable one. AND we can't stay stuck there no matter what side of that issue we find ourselves on.
as with all tattoos I would be just worried to not recognize changing moles, new growths etc and therefore miss signs of skin cancer...

I’m a Black person who is heavily tattooed and full body blackout does make me uncomfortable but I can’t exactly put my finger on why. I got a blackout tattoo back in 2015 so I’m not bothered by portions of the body being blacked out at all ….🧐 I need to think about it more. 🐙

i feel like the line is definitely why they’re blacking out their skin to begin with. is it to cover up a tattoo or just to go to an extreme and ‘stand out’? if you’re doing full body black out for the latter reason it feels stranger than the former (imo) and like a gross misuse of white privileged. these tattoos are not cheap so to do a full body for what feels like no reason is just so bizarre

For me, being spam called in nearly any form freaks me out- my partner or a telemarketer makes no difference, I can feel anxiety or panic attacks from this! But it doesn't mean the *intent* of the spammer is bad (like it was for the spammer of my past), so if I learn the spam calling from my partner was to try and warn me of something at home I tend to relax and try to push past that discomfort. For telemarketers, not so much as I remain rightfully upset.
I feel like this might be a scenario like that...? Triggers have no rhyme or reason, if it hurts *IT HURTS*. The intent seems to be the thing that causes real harm and anything else it then falls to abuse victims to learn to be ok with in some regard. *Obviously* black trauma has more nuance as to it being ok to feel off-put by this sorta of stuff 😅 Way more daily implications for y'all.

Main point being, you're allowed to feel upset over something triggering to a deep pain, and I don't wish that hardship on anyone :(

Close to black face?! Lmaoo how is it “icky” I have a black out tattoo, and I’m Mexican/black. Getting a black out tattoo is a form of expression and some people just like the aesthetic. One persons tattoo experience does not revolve around someone else’s feelings and opinions.

As far as further opinions on blackout pieces go: I see them as the tattoo industry’s answer to extreme body modification. There’s so many ways to extremely modify oneself, and blackout is one of them. Ofc as someone who got a blackout piece I have a biased positive opinion of them though.
When it comes to trend cycles I do fear that people will start getting blackouts without fully thinking it through or considering how intense it is. It’s an extremely physically grueling tattoo to get no matter the placement, and there is truly no changing your mind later. It’s not to be taken lightly at all
i dont know a lot abt tattooing, so looking at roxx's work, what REALLY impresses me is her designs based around negative space!! if i wasnt going for a patchwork look, if i wanted black out tattoos, i would pay so so much money to come to america and be tattooed by her omg
I'd say most people don't like him because he said creepy stuff about young girls. So most people probably are just venting their distaste for him overall.

I may not like MGK but as far as tattoos go I don't care what he gets. If he didn't like all those tats before and laser can be difficult for people with tons of overlapping tattoos then blackout kinda sounds like your only major option left outside of leaving it all there. So it doesn't matter to me. It looks fine.
2:49 that's not a poem...that's marketing copy...some of these tattoo artists are skilled copyrighters/marketers...I like the blackouts, but I think the people who have the desire to get the blackouts have already demonstrated that they get tattoos that they end up wanting to cover, so in ten years...will they want to get rid of the blackouts? Comparing the varying shades of black people's skin to literal black ink is what's offensive.
When I first saw a photo blackout, I thought it was so beautiful and had a great punk essence to it. In-person, it's jarring. Time will tell if this takes off in the mainstream, tattoed on ppl other than artists, creatives, tattoo enthusiasts, etc.

I see no issues with black work if that’s what the person wants, then go for it. I’m Italian with olive colored skin (not bright white but not super dark either) so I don’t know if my opinion matters, but again, I see nothing wrong with any one getting black work done; original skin color doesn’t play a factor. 🐙 Love you, Cel 💜
MGK's is honestly the best choice he could have made. He went from having some trashy random drawings and coverups over his skin to a pretty descent blackout/blast over that fits him really well. I don't get why people botter so much about him specifically, even if you don't like the guy because he is/was a prick or because of the whole Eminem beef

The picture you used for the whole body black out in the white traditional Japanese undergarments (fundoshi) is clearly a former yakuza. Tattoos in Japan are linked to the criminal underworld and blacking out his tattoos is a clear sign of him being done with the yakuza life style. It has nothing to do with culture appropriation.
Oh clearly! It could easily be someone from anywhere else where white-skinned people exist. A real Yakuza would never cover his tattoos, except under clothing.

As a black man, the argument that a blackout tattoo is black face or could make people of color uncomfortable is just ridiculous and seemingly a way to find outrage over body modification. Im speaking for myself but I think blackout tattoos are awesome no matter the skin color of the person getting them, and to suggest that it’s somehow an extension of blackface is just ridiculous and ignorant. Not to mention the fact that black people don’t literally have black skin is what makes it funny to me. Don’t think just because you’re white you have to defend yourself just because a few people of color feel “uncomfortable” with blackout tattoos, obviously the intention is for body art or to coverup old tattoos in a cool way, not because they’re trying to offend black people. I like how Kat Von D’s blackout tattoos fade out into leaf designs. I love the shadow effect it gives, reminds me of sitting under a tree in the summer heat.
The whole comparing it to blackface bit sounds extremely stupid to me. Before long pale people won’t be able to bronzer or self tanner or be able to go out in the sun without ten pounds of sunscreen on without the risk being called racist for it. Just an absolute reach with that crap. No black person looks like a black out tattoo 🙄 if anything it feels more racist to even compare that to actually being black. Now if they were doing these black out styles with brown ink then you would definitely have a point. This is not me defending these kind of tattoos though. I think most of them are ugly as hell. Some of the ones with design work in it are good but most of them suck especially over time. I’ve seen plenty of black out tattoos that aren’t even that old look god awful. I’m sure these artists are probably better than most so these celebs will probably be fine but I just have a feeling the average person is gonna end up looking awful if they attempt this. Give me beautiful artwork over boring blocks of just black out any day of the week.
Exactly! I agree with you. AND, no-one seems to have a problem with the MILLIONS of dark-skinned people all over the World who regularly spend money on "bleaching lotions" or cream and do anything they can to appear lighter-skinned! I haven't heard ANY non-black people complaining about THAT!
I'm not into tattoo subculture and know very little about it. But blacking out looks damn beautiful to me, especially when previous layer of chaotic tattoos peek throught those intricate gaps as in MGK's exaple. Stunning!
