The labor market is completely broken. One reason why “nobody wants to work anymore” is they are sick and tired of being treated like a “disposable dish rag.”

You should do an episode on accepting a higher job position and feeling like you’re not qualified. For example I accepted a job offer as Design manager position but I’ve never been a manager before and I’m so anxious and scared to be a failure even tho I know I can be a good leader and mentor. How to get out of that insecure mindset.

Need pay to match all these extra studies n such. back in the day employers still gave raises and promotions even though they upskilled their workers. Now employers are not doing any of that. This year some jobs are not even doing the measly 4% raises, just nothing. No incentives to learn or skill up, and no raises. There is a reason workers not only feel replaceable but demoralized. Why work so hard or extra if there is literally no extra rewards or incentive.

Don't make more than what it's supposed to be. If there are people who make their work their life, that's their life. But work by its nature is transactional. You work to get paid, to be able to get the stuff you need to live a good life. No more, no less.

I'm one of the 53% that feel replaceable...I'm sick of tired of places of employment (including my previous IT job at a CPA firm) giving me offers of employment that let me work, develop, and evolve just for them to turn around a short 6 months to year and half later giving me the lying, lame excuse for letting me go as "Sorry, you're not a company fit that we were looking for" or "I've got a friend/family member that wants your job, resign or face being fired"
The bottom line is there are people like me that are being undervalued and being thrown back out in the unemployment line for no dumb reasons that need to STOP!!!

Dude, my company has professional development goals for us, but we are worked to death that there's no time to do any of the development unless you do it on your own time. It would be better if they did more to give you the time to develop and skills.

To be honest, almost everyone is replaceable unless your job is highly highly specialized and barrier to entry and learning curve is extremely high like a surgeon, doctor, lawyer etc. I'm a software engineer and do a great job and have alot of knowledge in my area but I can always be replaced by another.

My boss goes out of her way to tell me how much she appreciates me almost daily. If I don't hear the words, she sends an email. At my annual review, she told HR I am irreplaceable. Exactly that word. I was hand picked to replace someone who was in the position for 25 years. I have just celebrated my one year anniversary and the other "new" person on the team has been there a decade. The boss has been there since graduating college in the 90s. They also had me sign a five year employment contract with a generous raise schedule when they hired me. The initial offer for pay was more than I was expecting to negotiate for.
I thank God every single day and I often say "I get to go to work today" instead of "I have to go to work today".
So yes, I've heard it and I hear it enough to know I've got it good. I am beyond grateful.

I left a career in higher ed because there was no clear path to develop my skills and move up in leadership. And every time someone resigned, they would scramble to hire someone completely new instead of promoting from within. It was chaos, and when I finally left (after seven years without a pay raise), about a dozen other people left within a month or two as well-we all realized we would never get to move up in our professorships.

We must work for the same company! All my coworkers talked me into applying for the manager position, which I wanted. The director unfortunately is a very jealous competitive person and does not like to see people succeed. I always felt something was off about her and she calls me her “friend”. We knew each other outside of work. She never gives praise and always makes sure she talks about herself. It’s very strange. The manager she hired previously that just left became her party buddy. She was completely worthless as a manager. She did nothing but sit on her IG/FB because that’s what she learned from this director. I’m on my last 3 days at this job.

Everyone is replaceable which is why you need more than one skill or occupation. I have 3 teaching credentials and an allied health license. I don't want to be unemployed. I transferred my credentials to two other states that I may want to live in at some point. It's so important to be forward looking.

I think the issue is that everyone knows they are replaceable, and its multiplied by also not feeling appreciated. Employers demand that their employees give everything they have to the place they work, but they would also throw you to the curb without batting an eye.

I am currently on my last week at a very well known luxury company who continuously takes away any incentive and training opportunities so there OSS no room for growth. Then his incompetent management while passing up amazing internal employees. The director does not know how to manage a team well. Everyone dislikes her. So, I’m leaving bad management.

Well you should try to change that by having great relationships and making sure you are always in the top 20% of performance.
In fairness, the bottom 53% of employees in many large companies are not very good employees. They are working for the check and not very ambitious about advancing the vision/goals of the organization. Great leaders can change that or try to hire better.

Everyone is replaceable, you’re simply a cog in the wheel. Your value is the labor or intellectual property you provide to your company. In the age of “shareholder value” nothing matters but stock price, even a private company has owners who want to maximize the value. Bluntly loyalty is not a two way street and never has been, the company sees you as a tool, if your not providing enough value your out the door. I work for what would pass as a great company, but I understand that if the owners decide they can make more money doing something else, my butt is on the street with a box of my stuff wondering how long it’s going to take to find a new job. It’s a zero sum game, revenue is X, I cost Y, the owner wants Z as income, that has to equal out, there is no loyalty there.

  • @jaystucky845
    @jaystucky845 Місяць тому

You are making the assumption that "leadership" wants their employees to feel wanted or needed. In a world that celebrates consolidation and loyalty in the work place only goes one direction, lack of engagement is only going to get worse.

It's OK to be completely replaceable. Just be prepared when you're replaced. Keep an interview pipeline ongoing even when you have a job. Maybe Josh Fluke is onto something. Putting effort into internal advancement doesn't fit the private equity firm investment model. The company itself is replaceable once it has been gutted and its assets harvested.

53%? that is way too low.
100% of employees should feel replaceable.
The person who feels s/he is not replaceable has an inflated ego.
Employment is a contract between the employee and the employer.
The moment the employee stops adding value s/he will be replaced in efficient companies.
The get the greatest value out of employees the company should provide the best opportunities for growth.
The three things that matter to employees are perception of fair pay, interesting work, and solid working relationship with boss.
For an employee to be employable s/he needs to have or acquire skills that are in demand.
Those "special" studies ain't gonna cut it.

nope. i want to feel irreplaceable. call it egotistical but i don’t care. i am here for money & will do whatever i can to make myself so valuable i can leverage my skills & so the company will essentially give me what i want. i’ve got other companies wanting me ? you better match their offer. they can either struggle to find someone else or give me what i want. that’s how this is gonna work. that’s just the game. please stop being delusional.
