there was no such country as kyivan rus. There is only the kingdom of Rus or as the French history book i've read dalled it Le Royaume De La Rousse. And it is that Kingdom who founded both Moscow, Kiev and Novgorod. Meaning the current Russia/Ukraine war is no invasion. It is a civil war! Only it lasted much longer then the American civil war. When i say they are all the same people, i am not just saying Ukrainians are Russians. I am saying Russians are Ukrainians too. But above all, they are Slavs. So really they should be part of Yougolasvia! Ok that Yougoslavia part was a joke. But not the Slav part.
Also the kingdom of Rus was not their first nation. If it had been, then they'd call themselves the Rus and not the Slavs! There was another bigger kingdom before what you call the Kievan Rus.
Honestly, I'm relieved you didn't immediately go start telling a pro-Ukraine/NATO narrative and actually gave a detailed nuanced background of the situation, regardless of who you support (if you even do) in this conflict. Good video. Keep it up.

@Given the constant infighting that appeared with socialist republics and how quick they were to run from Russia's grasp after the Soviet Union fell? Hard to say.
Real Life Lore touched on this topic too. He mentioned one thing that Nato also attacked Serbia to stop the Bosnian Genocide, while Nato is by definition a defensive Pact. And that means that Nato can attack as well. This put Russia on a serious alert since if the separatist groups in Russia would start and uprising and Nato started helping them, Russia would lose land.
Yeah NATO reformed after the fall of the soviet union in order to 'stop evil' stuff like genocide or wars etc. So technically no, NATO cannot attack a country, but it can intervene in countries wars.
Which it does technically give a premise to help separatist movements in russia, if the russian government was going for an extermination path, and guess what, Thats what is techncially happening in Ukraine right now. Russia sees ukraine as a breakaway state (Look for Putin's speech about unity of Rus), and The West wants to support the moral right of the Ukrainian People for their Freedom. Thats why I don't think Russia has a valid claim for condemning NATO expansion. Because NATO inheritely represents the rights of self preservstion and liberty, which as proven by SMO, russia hates.
Great job simplifying that part of History without missing the most important things. Just 2-3 things I want to add: 1- "fun fact": during War of 1919-1922 (or War with Bolsheviks, as we call it in Poland) there was some tryings to make Polish-Ukrainian alliance against soon-to-be USSR (they became USSR in 1922) between Piłsudski and Simon Petlura, however it didn't worked out. 2 - about times of Polish -Lithuanian Commonwealth... You oversimplifed it, BUT you did it mostly right. Just - history of our region with relationships between Poles, Ukrainians and Russians are too complicated to fully understand by the people from the rest of the World. ( 3 - I hope that some people (more reasonable people) will soon decide that maybe it's better to first end the war with Russia, and then but Polish and Ukrainian historians together to finally put an end to our discussion about our common history (for those who don't know the context - there are still a lot of people both in Ukraine and Poland who are arguing (not always in civilized way) about some parts of our history: like Bandera, Ukrainian minority in Poland during 1920's and 1930's etc. Just... don't try to intervene or to understand: it is sth we have to "talk out" on our own). But putting those 3 things aside - as I said: great job by simplifying one of the most difficult thing in the whole World: relations between slavic nations.
The 'Nato Expansion' excuse is simply untrue. Putin was very open about wanting to offer NATO airbases inside Russia itself as late as 2012 for usage during the GWOT. If he was so concerned about NATO being a threat to Russia in the first place he would have never offered these facilities to them.
@@goshakrasovskiy7072 At the time no, troops from the US, France and the Uk even participated in the 2010 victory day parade. It only became an excuse for Russian imperialism post Euromaidan. They never made such an excuse to justify the invasion of Chechnya for example. Russia was never concerned with NATO expansionism because for decades Eastern European countries continued to join NATO with no issues from Russia. Even within Ukraine joining NATO was less popular as most people in Ukraine at the time of Euromaidan in 2014 only wanted to improve the economic and political situation by joining the European Union. It was only after the annexation of Crimea and Russia creating the DPR and LPR that the 'NATO Expansionism' lie was invented. and subsequently support in Ukraine for joining NATO increased.
Russia thought they could be friends with west basically usa who is the leader of west but usa didn't want that they always wanted some big bad (Russia) as enemy to out a tighter leash on the other western European nations Putin just realised that and did what he believed would be right for his nation.
@@TreeBeard2008 That doesn't justify their fear now of NATO, at the time Russia was a NATO partner. it doesn't give them an excuse to justify the NATO expansionism myth when they were actively supportive of providing military facilities within the borders of Russia.

I would argue, the difference between the Cuban and Ukrainian crises. In Cuba, diplomacy (barely) won. And there was no significant U.S. invasion of Cuba (besides by the CIA that failed) but ALOT of sanctions on its economy. A ‘quarantine’, bassically a blockade targeting military equipment was put on Cuba due to the U.S.’ naval superiority. Whereas in Ukraine, diplomacy failed. Ukraine is under occupation and war time conditions. Russia has no way besides military force to influence Ukraine. And is increasingly reliant on China and India rather than the west for economic growth. The war has also allowed its economy to stay afloat, but it has consequences in the future. As now, unlike in the Cold War, it’ll be the junior partner of China.
