"Vinland Saga" is a Viking themed song with lyrics we adapted from a song found in Robert Michael Ballantyne's book, "The Norsemen in the West”, written in 1872. We hope you enjoy it:)

Was this planned to release right as the National Museum of Norway puts away the painting «Leiv Eiriksson oppdager Amerika» (Leiv Son of Eric Discovers America) (Christian Krohg, 1893), or is it just a coincidence?

The greatest tragedy of the modern world is the inaccessibility of the unknown. Men crave real adventure, bring trial and hardship so long as the sweetest wine of true accomplishment is there. Ordeal most bitter is easy to swallow when you know that what you are doing matters.
We live in a world where that which matters is beyond the reach of almost everyone, and this is why, despite being more comfortable than any human beings that ever lived before, most people are miserable.
We don't want to be comfortable. We don't want to be safe. We want to be free.

Adventure is out there, it is just a matter of looking. Join the military or police, if you want something more peaceful but still quite an adventure you could join the Peace corps or serve as a Red Cross aid volunteer. Even just physical adventures such as backpacking the Appalachian trail or entering a martial arts tournament. There are plenty more places to find service and hardship. adventure is out there and worth seeking.

@@lunialation666 like most things, it depends on what your definition of “good” is. I personally have a lot of fun with the show and really enjoy it. It’s got incredible and insane action, plus the characters are interesting and fun.
But it’s definitely not for everyone. It’s in this weird middle zone where it’s both surprisingly realistic and absolutely bonkers. You have a lot of historically accurate weapons and armor. You have the brutal reality of what BOTH sides committed during this time. They even have call outs to actual significant events. Then you have a guy chucking huge logs like a canon at oncoming ships. I personally love it and find it really fun, but I understand that it might put some people off.
On top of that it is a very violent show. If killing and gore isn’t your thing this won’t be the show for you. And the story is a bit odd. The protagonist’s personal journey is a really simple one that doesn’t really do much for the overall narrative. He’s just kind of around while the historical characters do their thing. (At least in the first season, not fully caught up with the current season yet)
So if all this sounds good to you then you’ll love the show! But if you’re not one for extreme violence or if you want the main character to have more agency then it might not be your thing. But if you want epic Viking stuff I highly recommend it!

@@lunialation666 don't wanna butt in, but as a huge fan of Vinland Saga I had to speak up
for season 2 content, you can either go to crunchyroll or find some free anime site (technically piracy but eh)
Now, season 1 is certainly filled to the brim with violence and more focus is given to the side characters instead of the protagonist, but this setup is meant to give the second season some solid weight, which is focused nearly wholly on the main character this time. It's no exaggeration when we say that this arc, dedicated to developing the protagonist, is simply one of the masterpieces in manga/anime writing of all time. As a man engrossed in cruelty and violence for the first season and being practically just a war machine, Thorfinn gets a chance to reflect deeply on his actions and life so far, and figure out what kind of life it is he should be leading. This is the nadir of his journey, and when he comes up from it he is refined into an amazingly written character embodying heartfelt anti-war ideals with a new mission in life that ties into the story's title and references the historical Thorfinn Karlsefni's expedition to Vinland. It'll look a lot like a meandering story set on a farm and nothing else at first, but I hope you'll stick with it!

2:40 "Who shall sing me"? This isn't Old Norse though, it's modern Norwegian. If you wanted Old Norse, that would be something like 'Hver Skal synge min'
2:49 This should be 'hellu land', 'hellu' from 'hall' as in 'rock, flat stone', see also Hallbjorn, 'Stone Bear'. Hella-Land would be 'Death Land' in this sort of context.

Ah, yes, sometimes a few people just get bitten by the travel bug or get born with an urge for adventure in their blood. Those are our greatest explorers, adventurers, discoverers and survivalists. There be dragons and we are in the business of slaying them where ever they may be found. That is just part of our human curiosity after all. And as it happened on Earth it shall continue to drive us ever forward, to the stars in the night sky and beyond. We will go as far as we can, just to see everything we possibly can, simply to know what all there really is, no other reason required. We can, therefore we will.

I've got a conlang (constructed language) based on a crossover between Old Norse and Innu-Aimun, the language of the people who live in what the Vikings called Markland. Listening to this song instantly made me want to translate the lyrics, so here we go:
    Ve'st'at uþa't a'bu al's Vi'tutætnata'st e'
Western waves were not at all Often thought of, ever.
    Øq ve'sttat uþa't vit-'a'sit A'bu ve'sþrur akum til
And western waves, consider Not western fields til
    Tcedgisǫ'na'gehntǫqe'ni
    They have been sown.
This is all I've got time for at the moment. I'm trying to accurately translate it while sticking with the tune and using Old-Norse style alliteration poetry. I'm not sure if I can keep it up all the way through, but I'll do some more when I have time.

2:27 - Small correction on the translation of the Norwegian line given in the description: It literally means "Who shall sing me" not "Who shall sing of me".
I assume it's taken from Helvegen, where it's one line but the whole verse is one long sentence, where it makes more sense. In that sentence it's used in the same way you might say "sing me to sleep" (indeed, the question in the song is essentially, to paraphrase; who shall sing me to death-sleep when I walk the path to Hel).
