I've seen Billy live 3 times and was incapacitated with laughter for the duration. He is the master story teller, so observant and there will never be another comedian to portray Scottish people and their mentality quite like him. Frankie Boyle is close, but as you say its Billy's actions that add other level to the story. A total performer

Watching this and reading your post made me think about his visit to NZ and the small town show I was blessed to see. He had been pinched for speeding on his trike earlier in the day, the cop that pulled him was in the audience.
Poor cop suffered the humiliation of a thousand laughs on him for the 4 hours Billy was on stage.
Amazing night and an amazing man, thanks Billy.

Scotland and Ireland were the last countries to have written language so there is a deeper culture of story telling as a legacy from that. Also on the early nights of winter historically you had fuck all to do when 6 hours of light in a day 🤣 so stories would have been central. An echo in our culture from centuries ago.

2:19 "I wonder who papered that ceiling" was even funnier.
Printed wallpaper was the rage when i was growing up, and still in Scotland it seems at this time. So no Leonardo masterpiece known to the two Scotsmen, just someone deciding to continue the redecorating from the walls to the whole circular ceiling.
It's the mental images Billy paints :)

The way you describe Billy Connolly was how my dad used to describe him, as a master of his craft.
He'd say Billy Connolly was a craftsman in comedy and Tom Sharp (and then later Terry Pratchett) were people who had surpassed the term author and writer and had become wordsmiths.
A lovely way to differentiate them from others when Billy was in a different class from other comedians at the time.

I think this was from the "Secret policeman's ball" in about 1978. The cast were largely university educated types. Billy Connolly was of course from a very different background. Hence the line about leaving school before the age of 21.
The Green Hughie/Hughie Green reference. Hughie Green was a talent show host in the 1970s on UK tv. Hence the audience response. I believe he was Canadian. My stepfather, who was also Canadian, said Hughie left Canada to work here because they couldn't fucking stand him anymore.

It is ironic how so many words in the Dutch subtitles are closer to the Scots words (or just accent) than the more standard English Billy uses so that international audiences understand.
Shooders, haun, gang, (although that’s a bit archaic) loup, yin, keek, gie us, breeks…

Billy Connolly's family are of Irish decent, I think he might be 1st generation Scottish. His family , not sure which side, are from connemara in the west of Ireland. I think the ancient tradition of story telling in Ireland is uniquely expressed in Billy and Dave Allen's comedy style. The Seanachi, were story tellers in Ireland, that was their job, they went from house to house and told stories to entertain people. People would come from the village to the house of an evening to listen to the Seanachi (phonetic spelling). The Seanachi would get a meal, a few drinks and some money and do the same the next night. This is how Irish people entertained themselves in the oral tradition of story telling where people could not read or before TV and radio. The better story teller the more popular you were and could earn your way in the village.

When Connolly talks about influences, he locates it firmly in the shipyard. Oh, and Gerry Rafferty.
