This week, for the first time ever, porsche has provided us with official information about the upcoming 911 hybrid, and while they're still keeping many things a secret, they've given us a few very revealing pieces of information.
Now I just want to say something to the porschefiles, to the automotive purists out there: this is not the beginning of the end.
I know you're seeing a lot of comments about the internal combustion engine going away in a few years, but you can disregard those comments because they are incorrect. The internal combustion engine is going to be around for a very long time, and it's only going to get more efficient and more powerful. And Porsche has stated that they are committed to internal combustion engines and I promise you the foreseeable future of the Porsche 911 is going to be bright.
In this weeks announcement from Porsche about the 911 hybrid, they stated 3 things: they've tested the hybrid drivetrain for approximately 3.1 million miles, the car achieved a nurburgring lap time of seven minutes and 16.934 seconds, and it is going to be revealed on May 28th.
It's being widely reported that the incoming hybrid will be the 911 Carrera S or the Carrera GTS, and when I say widely reported, I mean pretty much every automotive media outlet is saying this, but the new hybrid not going to be the carrera S or the GTS, and we know this because the ultra fast 992 Turbo S completed the Nurburgring in seven minutes and 17.3 seconds, almost 1 second slower than the 911 hybrid, and porsche is not about to make the 911 carrera S or GTS faster than the 911 Turbo S.
We know for sure that the new 911 hybrid is going to be an ultra high performance model but it will most likely be a new stand alone trim, and not a replacement for any of the models in Porsche's current 911 lineup.
The 911 hybrid is what's called a mild hybrid, which means the added electric system only serves as a performance booster, and is not meant to power the entire car. Also, it will not be a plug-in hybrid, Instead it will rely on a multi-stage brake energy recuperation system, and a variable-geometry turbine within the exhaust tract to allow it to generate power under acceleration.
The electric motor was developed by Porsche, Bosch and Williams Advanced Engineering and is likely a modified version of the motor currently powering the 963 LMHd racecar. The new motor drives several components, including the front wheels, an integrated starter generator for the six-cylinder internal combustion engine, and a high-voltage 2 kWh battery. It may also assist the spooling of the turbos to further increase acceleration.
Increased weight has been a major consideration of Porsche, and to reduce the weight of the new hybrid system as much as possible, porsche has utilized a 400V system which keeps the electric components small and light. The new hybrid system has been reported to only weigh 200lb, which is incredibly light. And to further offset the weight, Porsche may be using carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic for some of the body panels, and polycarbonate for the windows.
As of now we're not sure which internal combustion engine is powering the 911 hybrid, but it is most likely a modified version of the 3 liter motor found in the current carrera lineup. And this probably goes without saying, but there will not be a manual transmission option. Now in the video that porsche released this week, we actually got a pretty good view of the new interior, so let's take a closer look at that.
The dash has been blurred out but we can see three distinct large gauges, that from this image, look to feature metal bezels, which contradicts the prediction of the all digital dash that most people were expecting. I know that this effect can be recreated digitally, but that looks like an actual metal reflection, and that reflection is not found on the other 2 gauges which leads me to believe this is actual physical metal on all three gauges, which is a big change from the 992.1 911, which only had 1 metal bezel. The left gauge looks to be providing up to date tire pressure readings, and possibly current power readings for the internal combustion and electric motors. The center gauge is a tachometer and it appears to have a white or silver background with black numbers, and the gauge on the right looks to be providing live readings for 7 or 8 different vehicle systems.
It's interesting to see that porsche has gone with a 3 gauge set up, which is more akin to the cayman and boxster, rather than the 5 gauge setup typically associated with the 911.

I am hearing that the hybrid will be used in the GTS, Turbo, and Turbo S. Carrera and Carrera S will remain ICE powered only with a power bump.

His logic is the lap time is too fast to be a non turbo model is incorrect it’s gonna be a gts model and it will be fast, refreshed turbo and s will be faster that this first hybrid release

It will be very exciting ! Two mysteries as far as I’m concerned : what with downsizing the naturally aspirated 4.0 engine to 3.6 liters ? And will the 992.2 GT3 be hybrid powered in order to have better performance than the current 510 PS 4.0 flat-6 ? Because I can’t very well see a 3.6 naturally aspirated flat-6 doing any better without some kind of assistance ! 😎

Great video - as always, thanks.
How about this? Your video shows the three dial dash. What if this is actually a 912?
A new “entry level” 911. Hydrid, with the 4 cylinder turbo from the 718.
Could it be that Porsche scraps the 911 base model, with this 912 instead. It is the lowest price car
Then the 911 S and GTS get a significant price increase and keep the 6 cylinder.
They position the 912 as a lightweight (relatively) bare bones drivers car.
    Just an idea.

The car in the video is the 992.2 GTS. The GTS embroidery has been spotted in the video from Porsche. One thing is certain, the analog tach is dead across the 992.2 range. 🪦

Hybrid sports cars are too fast to screw around with manual gear boxes. Once uve driven one and felt the shifts. The thought of putting a manual gear box in one makes no sense.

A Porsche purist doesn't modify a car from the factory. It is not someone afraid of progress. So get your hand off your knob, enjoy a DCT, insist on a twin turbo and welcome the hybrid system. Either that or go buy a 1948 356 with 35 hp and drum brakes.

I agree, however what i think the scariest part to people to grasp is "this was & is the best, how can it any get better", especially when we're talking about a hybrid and especially when thinking about the weight. The handling will, most likely, feel different from the current version, especially because of the batteries BUT... Porsche is known to literally defy physics, or at least manage to make it seem as such. Think about that rear engine. I bet they will take this opportunity to bring that center of gravity to the front. The weight will still be there, but I trust that Porsche will integrate the hybrid system and dynamics in such way that it will feel fast, agile & overall the same if not better to drive, and that people will love it. I know they will not stray away from the DNA of the 911.

So far I know the new Model will be compared with the 911 Carrera 4S. As it is the only model that fits to the "8 Seconds better time" on the Nordschleife. Also later there will be the new Turbo S with the new Setup. As the Engineer stated that they "start" with the model they show now at the 28th this month.
