Yes, I like the idea of putting the chickens in the high tunnel now that you have one. They can keep warm and clean up all the leftover vegetation and turn it into eggs.
That's a frost free hydrant. When you shut it off, all the water left inside the pipe drains out through the very bottom, into the ground. We have them on our homestead, and they are game changers!
Yup, but they only work if nothing is attached to them. Got to let air into the opening for them to back drain. Same with frost free ones on the house. Also roll flat and drain all water out of hoses if they are not pure rubber like Jason has. You can roll them up after the water is out if you need to. Leave them open both ends and dry.
We are in the central part of Saskatchewan. We just had a Arctic wave move through with windchills of -40F. Actual night time lows of -27F. We bring warm water to the barn. Our Kune kune pigs are in the barn together with our 3 cows. The barn is too big to heat but the heat the animals give off keep is somewhat doable. Still freezes the water. So warm water is great for them. I also empty the icb totes, so they don't get damaged. Good luck this winter.
We have only 3 acres for 3 years. Chickens and they're very hardy. I lost young ones because they wouldn't go up and froze 2 y ago. I was new to raising chickens. It's been hard. But I have a Bernice., a buff bramha. She's my only broody girl. I've learned so much from watching you and other shows. Keep going. God bless
Scrapple and eggs is a southern comfort food tradition. My great-grandfather Quillen wrote home mentioning he longed for his wife's version of it while he was off working as a surveyor for the Panama Canal circa 1909.
The way, I understand it, those tall hydrants are called frost free hydrants for a reason. The actual place where water sits in the hydrant is supposed to be installed below your frost line so you don’t have any problems with freezing on them. And they automatically drain once you turn the water off. We use the rubber dishes as well, and I use the end of a shovel to break the ice in the mornings. In the deep winter, I keep a kettle on the wood stove, and I use that hot water to break open their waters.
@@SowtheLand I like the idea of putting the bag over the fitting on the thousand gallon tank. I have a 1500 gallon, and what I did was cut one of those Styrofoam coolers that you get in the mail and made a custom cover for my 2 inch valve. Then I just put a cardboard box over that and put a rock on top to hold everything in place. We’ve been to -13 without a problem.
Winter on the ranch , farm was one of my favourite seasons , a time of quiet reflection, look at your accomplishments , Christmas , then start preparing for calving . Thankyou Jason , you’ve created a fine program . 😊
I read a series by Jan Karon (Mitford series) And a character in her books loved liver-mush. Id never heard of it and it sounded kind of awful but seeing Lorraines version I actually want some! I was born and raised in So Cal. but Ive been 32 years in North Dakota. Winters never get easier. I try to enjoy the no bugs, no mowing, no watering etc. But some winters are extra long
Also wanted to mention that I managed to watch all of your videos from the last 7-8 years. Amazing collection and I enjoyed most of them a lot. Best wishes for a restful Christmas and New year.
I have a black 55 plastic food grade drum that never freezes in the winter. I think the day time sun heats up the water enough for it not to freeze, even temps below 32°.
I love this channel. Glad I came across it. Reminds me of my buddy's farm where our families hang out almost every weekend. Also makes me excited for my future in homesteading. So far I'm at chickens and a garden and looking into sheep next. You guys are great.
I watch all your videos. Montreal, Canada. We get an average of 10 ft of snow in the yard and temperatures of -40 calculus. I don't have animals but make a Hugh vatable garden in the summer..
love scrapple! I am from VA and we have always called it scrapple no matter what we all call it it is soooo good Making my own this year with a mix of different meat parts cant wait
Jason, your video content is great! My hubby and I so enjoy learning from you and Lorraine. I would love to spend a couple days in the kitchen learning from her!!
Your mush would be even better if you dipped in milk, then cornmeal to fry!! I make a batch of just cornmeal mush every week for my breakfasts and it makes a difference if dipped and fried vs just fried! Yum.
I’m Minnesota an IBC tote will freeze solid. Last year we cut a heater into it and that worked ok until the heater got unplugged… yup froze like a rock! We had to wait till is thawed out in the spring. I’ve found “in Minnesota” that I water twice a day. When I start morning chores I take a hose out, fill all the water bowls. When everything is filled I shut off the hose and drain it out. The hose goes back into the house until next time. Our animals drink until they are done. When I leave after I finish chores and milking, I dump the water so it won’t freeze. The animals train themselves to that schedule and I’ve had great luck with this schedule. In the evening I do it all over again.
Am envious of you folks. Am from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia near Harrisonburg and one of the best things about a cold morning was smelling scrapple frying. The idea of that and some scrambled eggs with it is a wonderful daydream.. Can not get it down here and miss it.
Hey Jason Nothing like a layer of lard to insulate your pigs! Think of them as land walruses! The only problem I have had with chickens is some frost bite on those with tall combs! But they are pretty tough given some shelter from wind and some deep bedding to insulate if in a coop! Deep bedding makes for some hot compost come Spring ! We can get down to -20 in late winter! 🥶 No one should be out in that! Stay safe and warm Jason! Peace and blessings! 🤗😉😁
What breed is freddy. I think i have the same breed i got as my free chick from McMurray this spring and i thought he was a cochin but the coloring isnt like any in the catalog

The grass on your land has recovered a lot from when you first bought it.
Lorraine, maybe you could do a video on how to make scrapple. It looks good. Jason you are definitely a thoughtful homesteader.

game changers for sure

Every time you say Bernice it makes me smile. Bernice is my late grandmothers name. 💚

Insert that rubber water tub in an old tire with straw inside and it will be keep that water from freezing.
Unless you get -30 to -40 temperatures regularly.

The Pennsylvania Dutch people make it. The best food from my childhood.
That is very cool, ive been thru the Panama canal a couple times, its a remarkable feat of engineering

that is correct. thanks for that.

Hope you could dig a few small pond before next year raining season & keep some goose & ducks.

I loved that series. I was just thinking the other day, it is time to re read those books.

Hi, Jason! Thanks for showing us how you winterize your property. Filling the waterers in the evening is a good idea.
8:28 mark killed me haha! You're the best Jason!

In the north they use frost free hydrants, pretty simple.

Winterizing is necessary for all water access points outside .. even in town. Lots of folks don't realize that.
I always have a “poking stick” for our frozen water pans 🤣 cold week here in the smokies
My dad always liked fried cornmeal mush with syrup, especially locally tapped syrup. Yummy! 🖖💙
Hey! I live in Minnesota... lol. And I can't say I blame you.
In the Netherlands we have balkenbrij. Almost the same thing as scrapple
Pool floaties sluce down the middle put over PVC plpe 😮😂
Dang! it got up to 20 degrees here today. My little chihuahua wears boots and wants to find frozen coyote turds to throw around in the fields.
Grew up on scrapple. Now that we are in south central Va it's hard to find. Love it
It’s getting to the middle 25 degrees in Chesapeake Va. For the morning temperatures.
Good day to all.
Good day!
@SowtheLand yep, so you know, your channel has been part of my rehab, thanks and be well.
love scrapple! I am from VA and we have always called it scrapple no matter what we all call it it is soooo good Making my own this year with a mix of different meat parts cant wait
Yeah more videos ❤

Scrabble❤ My mom would make it after Thanksgiving with turkey. I love it!
I'M IN NORTH FLORIDA...I LOVE YOUR SHOWS...

Yup the cold is coming
Hello again 🎉
Great job
Stay warm guys.

WOW that's a great video. Thank you. Hello from Michigan. Take care and God blee.

Those stickers would make fun Xmas gifts.
Great video! Thanks Jason!
Thanks for watching!
Love it thanks for sharing.
Golden table syrup for the Livermush/ Scrapple
Enjoyed the video 😊
I left my smaller carrots in the ground and I think they're pretty solid now.
😂 Here in Michigan, the rubber pans freeze solid! Either dump them out and refill or use a heated waterer.
Pretty chilly 🥶 here in eastern Pennsylvania.
I bet
Water heater insulation would work well on those totes... you'd need 3 or 4 of them per tote, I would think.
Ready for winter , I am in Michigan so we do get some COLD!
Awesome video!
That looks good!
We cover the garden beds with3-4” of shredded leaves ( shredded with a mower). Earth worms get fat and happy
Wood chips works for us, then it goes on the compost pile.
Try maple syrup on the scrapple. Most grocery stores carry scrapple for those that want to try it.
Did you ever think of the quick connect for the hoses? I use them and love them
Will you make a video on how to grow the sprouts?
Can you guys do some aerial footage for perspective? Tx for the authenticity ✅✅
i love when you cant think of a word and then find it yeah thats what i meant lol hugssss
Was looking for a brown hat yesterday and all sold out, I can see why now.
Nooice! 😎 STOC
Made me laugh when you said Minnesota. My state.
😊❤😊
Ruh roh raggy we’re runnin out of rawter
Do you empty the water from the hose so you don’t have to wait for the hose to thaw?
😊😊
Won't the chickens knock down the beds, if you put them in the high tunnel? 💚🌞
❤❤❤
put them in the green house that way you have less work to do tearing things out half for chickens, half for piggies hugsssss
then all my nice hilled rows will be gone! 🥲
❤❤VIDEO ❤❤
Hello do you guys clean and wash the water and feeding bins (pigs bins or baskets) ? Just wondering 😊
❤
Do you ever screw the hose ends to each other to keep hibernating insects out?
Whats the source for the 1000 gallon water collection tote?
Do what Al Lumnah does.
Are you gonna get sheep next year?
Do you have any wooden spoons? Or don’t you make them anymore.? I think whit-tiling them in the winter would keep you busy! lol
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
What breed is freddy. I think i have the same breed i got as my free chick from McMurray this spring and i thought he was a cochin but the coloring isnt like any in the catalog
If your viewers watch the Hillary’s they’ve seen it a few times.
their
It's funny how people have different ideas what foods are now... SCRAPPLE has always been hog brains with scrambled eggs.
