That's good to see somebody bringing attention to these misunderstood animals that are desperately needed back in our waterways. A lot of the invasive species that we're seeing today probably could have been prevented if these incredible predators hadn't been wiped out when people experienced serious hysteria in the Great lakes area. It could take decades for the populations to recover in the areas where reintroduction is being experimented with and even if we get them established it'll take decades more for them to grow large enough to do their vital ecosystem roles. It may be a bit bold of me to say, but there's a chance that the loss of this species contributed more to our loss of our fisheries than people are aware. Just the presence of an animal like this and an ecosystem changes the behavior of everything else in the ecosystem but so much damage was done to our waterways over the same 50-year period will never really know until we put the pieces back which ones were behind the collapse. Probably a combination.
Cool vid! I'm in southwestern ont canada. People around here will sometimes catch the spotted gar with a bunch of fluff on the end of a line and no hook!
I just thought of this today and this was first one I watched. They're big, have sharp teeth and I've been swimming in the brazos river all my life and never had a problem with one but I don't underestimate but this question popped in my head randomly, weird.
They're physically incapable of eating a large prey item like a human. What they do is change the behavior of small fish in the ecosystem which they can and do eat.
Probably but unless you're actively grabbing them they're not going to do anything to you. They're very comfortable in the water so they're less likely to be stressed or a danger while they are swimming. The number one way people get bit by venomous snakes is by attacking the venomous snake not the other way around. Venomous snakes always lose in a fight against an animal bigger than they are. At best they take out the thing that's going to kill them with them so they're not going to be the aggressors.

I have heard of that, and after catching some of these fish I believe it. It would be very easy for the "fluff" to get caught in their teeth.
a little advise every animal you encounter is good content! So the next time you catch a turtle on camera tell us about the turtle and show us!
