Dark, moody and sinister, Film Noir is a style that packs a punch with hard edged shadows and high contrast. In this tutorial Gavin Hoey takes you a simple set-up to transform a small home studio into a classic private detectives office.
Gavin shows you how props and lights combine to create the final scene and then takes you into Photoshop to give the image that Film Noir mono look.

Mr. Gavin Hoey: This is got to be the best Film Noir presentation I have ever seen on You Tube. I may try this in the future. I am always impressed by how you use composition, lighting, and post processing in all of your photographs. You make it look easy. You are a great teacher. I am impressed.

I tried this out and it worked great. I had a female model that was pretending she was a femme fatale. I added a narrow table under the window that served as either a desk or a bar. It was so much fun. She did ask me if I got the idea from Gavin ( we did the gold backdrop shoot last time) and I had to confess.

Gavin: Watched a number of your videos today and really enjoyed the info. One thing I believe that you do better than all other instructors is to be deliberate as you work with PS or LR to use the "Drop Down" menu items rather than speak in "keystroke". I think this is very helpful for those who are adding new skills as it is quite a bit more difficult to remember keystroke rather than the broader Menu Drop downs to find features being applied. Love your enthusiasm and your ability to articulate complex issues.....Thank you~!!
