- Representatives of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange hold a press conference on Wednesday (26 June) upon his return to Australia following a plea deal with the US government.
Mr Assange’s flight arrived in Australia earlier today following his release from a UK prison as part of a plea deal with the US authorities.
More than 56,000 users were tracking the flight on online tracker FlightRadar24 as it landed in the capital Canberra at 7.37pm local time (10.37am UK).

That wasn't why he was jailed following due process. In fact, arguably he was jailed for lying - when he jumped bail and fled to the embassy he gave undertakings to the court that he would show up for proceedings. He did not. Bail jumping is not a trivial offence.

I do NOT wish to take anything away from the Australian Prime Minister, as he was instrumental in the release of Julian, and a more fair (Notice I did NOT say fair!) outcome. But, I do want to remind the world, that there were MANY Americans who stood up to political pressure and demanded that the government drop the charges against Julian. There were a lot of Americans who were duped into supporting the government in there allegations. One former U.S. President actually wanted the death of Julian, because he dared embarass them by publishing truth and exposing the crimes of the American Government. It is sad that the rest of the world were prepared to allow the U.S. to take the life of this man, under the guise of espionage. This man was a journalist, and he was targetted for death because he published the truth. So glad this is over. I hope that Julian is able to return to a normal life. Shout out to Australia.......You guys keep a good eye on this man. Don't allow "Questionable Circumstances" to be the future for this man. There are still a lot of powerful people who hold a grudge against Julian, don't ever assume that they have just "moved on".

Constitutional law protection
The Australian Constitution does not explicitly protect freedom of expression. However, the High Court has held that an implied freedom of political communication exists as an indispensable part of the system of representative and responsible government created by the Constitution. It operates as a freedom from government restraint, rather than a right conferred directly on individuals.
In Nationwide News Pty Ltd v Wills (1992) 177 CLR 1 and Australian Capital Television Pty Ltd v the Commonwealth (1992) 177 CLR 106, the majority of the High Court held that an implied freedom of political communication exists as an incident of the system of representative government established by the Constitution. This was reaffirmed in Unions NSW v New South Wales [2013] HCA 58.
Protection in State and Territory human rights laws
Section 16 of the Human Rights Act 2004 (ACT) states that:
Everyone has the right to hold opinions without interference.
Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This right includes the freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of borders, whether orally, in writing or in print, by way of art, or in another way chosen by him or her.
The rights in this act are subject to section 28:
Human rights may be subject only to reasonable limits set by Territory laws that can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.
In deciding whether a limit is reasonable, all relevant factors must be considered, including the following:
the nature of the right affected;
b. the importance of the purpose of the limitation;
c. the nature and extent of the limitation;
d. the relationship between the limitation and its purpose;
e. any less restrictive means reasonably available to achieve the purpose the limitation seeks to achieve.
Section 15 of the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 (Vic) provides:
Every person has the right to hold an opinion without interference.
Every person has the right to freedom of expression which includes the freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, whether within or outside Victoria and whether-
(a) orally; or
(b) in writing; or
(c) in print; or
(d) by way of art; or
(e) in another medium chosen by him or her.
Special duties and responsibilities are attached to the right of freedom of expression and the right may be subject to lawful restrictions reasonably necessary-
(a) to respect the rights and reputation of other persons; or
(b) for the protection of national security, public order, public health or public morality.
Basically, Australian constitution lets the government override their version of a first amendment, if people endanger public security. So, yea, if Assange exposed Australian spies and secrets he would very probably gone to jail in Australia.
