I'm a Lightning fan that grew up in the province of Québec so that was fun in 2021, my favorite commentator is Dave Mishkin from Lghtning Radio, but I have to shoutout Pierre Houde for the Montréal Canadiens in French broadcasting, that guy is a legend!
I have a feeling Ozzy will step right in when Mickey retires (if he retires). That whole team has great chemistry. Murph has come a long way from the first season he was in the studio and Keating... well... what else can you say? I surely hope him and Ozzy start playing pranks on each other again. Those are always hilarious (like putting a very unflattering picture of each other on Comerica Park's scoreboard or just wearing random articles of clothing with unflattering face pictures of the other guy on it).
Doc Emrick was the best of the Versus/NBC Sports national crew back in the day. Sucks that the other members of that crew were Eddie Olczyk and Mike Milbury.
Accuracy and enthusiasm of the play-by-play caller, neutrality when assessing the referees, chemistry between PbP and Color, quirkiness of the particular regional network itself, ability to guide home fans psychologically through the teams‘ issues without being patronizing, communication to grow the sport, humor, and self-deprecating commentary
Hes gotta listen to ken kal and paul woods on the radio for Detroit they've been together as long as Redmond and Daniels have. Both are amazing to listen too, you learn a lot about the game as well and you get the stories because they have all been in the motorcity for awhile now.
I always enjoy it when Louie has to call a game against the Bruins. Very professional always but the proud Dad leaks through even though Jake is a Bruins fan.
What I liked about Pat Foley and Eddie O was they had no problem, especially towards the later years of the 2010's, calling out how bad the hawks were playing and how well other teams/players from the other team were playing. It never felt dull like it does with Florida or Colorado when their team is losing.
Moser is getting up there with edwards in my book. Every goal by the other team is luck or only because of xxx....he hasnt just completely called a player on the other team names yet, as far as ive seen, so edwards still the 'king'.
Agree, and I miss Keefe and Rycroft in the studio, they were like kid best friends and it was usually a pretty comedic and entertaining outcome, with Liles coming in from the Wine Cave as a third punch. Ever since they pulled Rycroft into the booth to replace McNab it hasn't been the same entertaining dynamic. Rycroft brings hockey pedigree to the booth so it's a natural fit, but I wish we still had McNab for his own qualities, and so that Keefe and Rycroft could be together. McGahey on the radio is an absolute gem in my opinion, and his voice is a welcome addition to the tv broadcast every chance he gets. He's full-blown homer and I'm okay with it.
Moser is actually really good at pointing out the highlights and good plays made by opposing teams, but I never really noticed it until after Maxi passed away. It’s Rycroft that I can’t stand.
Can't wait for the TV deal to end and everything hockey to go back on RDS. TVA sport will fold which s*cks for general sports coverage, but their hockey broadcast is sub-par compared to Pierre et Marc
He's obviously not RJ (because nobody is), but I really enjoy listening to Dan Dunleavy for the Sabres, and he balances fairness while still showing enthusiasm for the Sabres when they score/win.
He has definitely done a great job. It is hard for me to watch other broadcasts as a Sabres fan because the Sabres whole crew (Duff and Biron in between periods as well) just do a great job together
John Kelly for the blues, sad to not see him on the play-by-play list. You can walk into the other room and then come back without feeling like you missed a beat because his commentary is so concise.
Nice to see Dano get some love on here. He's so emotionally invested in the team, but is pretty impartial when it comes to analyzing penalty calls against either team
He also doesn't hesitate to criticize the Devils when they're not going good. He won't go out and kill them with stuff like "they really suck tonight", like fans in the stands might, but he'll call them out. Not all local guys will do that.
For a brief moment, Sabres broadcasts had RJ, Harry Neal and Razor. That was very nice. Having Harry Neal on made it like watching HNIC every night. What a treat. RJ, the ultimate homer. Razor, bringing the comedic and behind the scenes stories. Will miss those days. Of course, I still kinda miss Ted Darling doing TV play by play. Nothing could beat his Housley calls. Even Uwe Krupp's adventures. Or anytime Sauve, Puppa, Malarchuk or any other goalie made an amazing save. And if you wanted RJ, you always had the radio.
Gary Thorne, Dave Strader, and Kenny Albert are the play by play goats imo. Micky and Bill Clement are probably the best on the colour commentating side.
@@jon-pauljeandron4439 Same here, RIP Dave Strader as well, gone too soon. There are some good newer commentators that I like, one Icthink is Bob Wichusen, and the other is I think the LA Kings play by play guy (the young one not the old one), but he has done some other games and I really like listening to him.
Daryl "Razor" Reaugh on the Stars broadcast is the best in the biz! Really ruins any time a different network covers a game for me. Along the lines of discussing the video aspect of all the broadcasts, I think an interesting topic would be "arena feel". For instance, anytime I see a game broadcast from MSG I have to wonder if the two guys up in the rafters shining flashlights down on the ice ever get tired and have to switch arms. Seriously feels like MSG lights the arena with the ghost of a Victorian era candelabra.
My favorites are Colorado, Florida, and Arizona. My main criterion for what makes a good broadcast is the enthusiasm the broadcasters have for their own team, so those ones are definitely the top in that category
When Mick isnt in the booth, i think Ozzy is another one of those that has really developed over time. When they tried him the first couple of years he seemed kinda shy, but as he's spent more time on the intermission report and in the booth, his personality has really come out. I really like it when its a group of guys who love the game and are also just buds. I really miss Pat Foley and Eddie Olczyk for that too.
When he first started, Ozzy used to finish talking and stare straight through the camera without moving until the intermission segment ended. It always had me howling, because it was so awkward. You're right about him being much improved, though. He's a lot of fun, now.
Grew up listening to Mick and Ken and it’s pretty cool to still have them as the Wings Broadcast team after all these years. Osgood and John Keating are great too though can’t leave them out!
Awesome as a wings fan to see people outside of Detroit appreciate our broadcast. I absolutely love it. The best. I miss them when the games are on TNT or ESPN
Appreciate the shoutout for the canes broadcast duo. Mike Maniscalco on the PxP side had some HUGE shoes to fill when John Forslund left, and I think he’s improving with each passing season. He and Tripp are developing their rapport more as well. And Tripp is just a national treasure.
One thing I like about the Pens broadcast (idk if others do it) is that they will show the parlay thing and then use that to talk about whatever player or team performance that the parlay is based on. Like Crosby 3+ shots will be one, and then they'll talk about the top line's chance creation or something
Dave Strader....one of the best! When I heard he was gonna be Dallas' PBP guy after Ralph Strangis left, it felt like we hit the big time. And you knew he was really into seeing the team succeed. Gone way too soon!
@@TracyJean1972 Amen! His emotional investment in the team was truly infectious. Don't get me wrong at all...Josh Bogorad is doing a great job as pbp man, but with Strader, you got something and someone special...especially with that national background
RIP Rick Jeaneret of the Buffalo Sabres. In his prime was top shelf. I think his best wingman was Jim Lorentz. Their current play by play guy, Dan Dunleavy is a helluva nice guy, but it's so hard to follow a legend.
I really like some good banter between commentators. I also enjoy having players on the mic during intermissions to see what they're currently thinking about the game
I think one thing missing from this list is a great producer and finding different camera angles and replays really helps tell a story of what happened on a play. It also helps tremendously if the color guy can break a replay down and help educate viewers, particularly in non-Canadian markets where there’s a lot more casual viewers and/or people watching who never played the game past mites.
Commentators I like: Shorthouse, Rosen, Forslund, and Cuthbert. Least favorites: Edwards and Moser, and I'm an Avs fan. Color commentaters: Pang, Ferraro, Olczyk, Redmond, and the late Peter McNab. I miss Gary Thorne and Bill Clement.
For me Bob Kurtz was absolutely amazing, perfect voice, great chemistry between him and Tom Reid, and most importantly they explained the game really well and with passion. Its so refreshing to hear “Yeah, that’s a fairly weak call, but we will take it!”. I cant listen to a complete homer cast like “Holy Jumpin’ how is that a penalty? He just hit him from behind”
For me, Randy Hahn and Drew Remenda are gold. They even have some good hockey comedy and even like to joke around with each other. My other favorite is Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond. Those two have great chemistry and great catch phrases. The Sharks and Red Wings have been blessed with legendary broadcasters.
As a Hawk fan I have always loved Ken and Mickey they are wonderful. They hooked me when the Wings and Avs rivalry was just starting. Loved Micky as aplayer also.
Calling a national game with a fair, unbiased approach is probably the best listen, for regional broadcasts, having a "homer" in the booth, such as Pittsburgh's Mike Lange, who is fantastic, is fine. In the New York market, we are truly blessed on Ranger telecasts, with the voice of the great Sam Rosen as the play-by-play man. Mr. Rosen has been the voice of hockey in New York since 1984 and many of us have grown up listening to his flawless calls of maybe thousands of games. He has broadcasted games with legendary partners such as John Davidson and in most recent years, the great, Joe Micheletti who played under Herb Brooks at the University of Minnesota. In the New York market, we are fortunate enough to have 3 teams in our viewing market. THG mentioned a terrific color analyst, Mr. Devil, Ken Daneyko, as being an exceptional analyst. No doubt about it, Kenny is spot on as a broadcaster as is Butch Goring, who although, never hides his disdain for the Rangers, does a fine job during Islander telecasts. In the States, we were fortunate enough to be blessed with the voice of Michael "Doc" Emrick for national broadcasts. The voices of the great Jack Michaels and Jim Hughson cascaded from north of the border for guys like us down here along with Coaches Corner with Ron MacLean and the one and only Donald Stewart Cherry providing insight and entertainment for a continent. I would remise not to mention the former Islander broadcasting team of Jiggs McDonald and Eddie Westfall whose telecasts of Islander games to the New York area were also greatly appreciated by New York area hocket fans as were the broadcasts team of Jim Gordon, "The Big Whistle' Bill Chadwick, and Hall of Famer Phil Esposito. Rest in Peace one of the greatest goalies of all time Tony "O" Esposito. Great topic THG.
As an Islanders and a Mets fan, I've come to really love broadcasters that will openly call out our own players when they do something bad/stupid. It's honestly jarring when I see clips from other broadcasts
Mick is a legend. I met him when i was 13 back in the 80s in training camp. He had 4 hot dogs and didnt hesitate to put them down to sign an autograph.
The Stars have the best broadcast team IMO. They are very professional and Razor is one of the smartest people in hockey today, while entertaining at the same time.
Nice video, Shannon, very interesting. I have tried listening to the club's announcers that aren't my favorite teams. I was really surprised that there are some announcers that I have/had to change the channel. The fastest way to get me to change the channel is when I have to listen to the play-by-play announcer attempt to describe every single thing that happens. Example, "player A passes to player B, player C passes to player D, player D takes a very long shot that goes wide." ...... I don't need to hear every single thing described. Those announcers give me a headache.
Several things 1. I still miss Dan Kelly. The best ever and we lost him way too soon. 2. Living the the NYC area, we get all three local teams. Sam Rosen is the all-time best NYR announcer (almost 40 years), and I go back to the days of Norm Jary (!) and Win Elliot. 3. As a Buffalo fan, I never got to hear much of RJ but Dan and Rob are a good team, they do it well without the flamboyance of RJ. 4. As it is with basketball, the TNT studio crew is miles ahead of ESPN. 5. At least I don't have to listen to Jack Edwards!
100000% on the gambling take over. Every sport is inundated with gambling talk. I don’t get why we are promoting clear adult addictions in a family friendly sport. You can’t swear, but you can peddle gambling odds? I’d argue gambling advertising is even worse than alcohol was. The equivalent would be if during broadcast, the broadcasters started listing off their favourite IPA’s, microbreweries, types of whiskey pairings. That’s not what we turned on the TV for.
As a Seattle fan I find John Forslund to be high energy on our broadcasts. I am glad that we signed him because the other option would have been signing Kevin Calabro who is more known for his basketball commentary especially with the Sonics when they were in the NBA (Calabro went to the Portland Trail Blazers after not getting the Kraken job). Having Eddie O do the games alongside him is also a treat. Now when it comes to TNT, they are solid (better than ESPN) but their broadcasts are not as entertaining as their NBA telecasts. If the post game show for the NHL on TNT had personalities similar to Charles Barkley & Shaq (they sort of do with Biz) then it would greatly bring in more casual fans to their broadcasts.
Jack Micheals and Louie DeBrusk is an underrated elite duo. Love the way Jack calls games; the way he makes games exciting late, his anecdotes about medical terms for the nose and the Alaska Aces, etc
Back in the 90's, I always liked Gary Thorne and Bill Clement. (Will never forget the McCarty Stanley Cup winning call in 97 or Paul Kariya "off the floor, on the board!" Call. Now I'm very partial to Craig Laughlin and Joe Beninati. Ken and Mick are great. Some of the worst are Chicago and Boston. I love the Bruins but Jack Edward's is out of his mind.
What a great topic! Thanks for talking about it. I can't think of anyone whose opinion on the subject I'd trust more highly. I wish it was easier to have access to more hockey games and their respective shows.
I was about to watch something else and I clicked on this instead just to make sure Daneyko was on the board 😅. You never disappoint me brother. Favorite new channel I found this season.

Nobody touches Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond. They are elite! They make games so much fun. Worst are Bruins ones........absolutely horrendous.
Edwards and Brickley were one of the best at making a broadcast enjoyable to watch and listen to.
I'm a Lightning fan that grew up in the province of Québec so that was fun in 2021, my favorite commentator is Dave Mishkin from Lghtning Radio, but I have to shoutout Pierre Houde for the Montréal Canadiens in French broadcasting, that guy is a legend!
Sam Rosen is a fucking national treasure and I will cry when he retires.
he and Micheletti are great together
Same. What a legend.
"It's a powerplay goal!"
I'm a Devils fan and even I love Rosen
MIKKKAAAA ZIBANEJAD!!!!! ITSSSSSS A POOOOWERRRR PLLAAAYYYY GOOOOOOAL!
Mickey Redmond and Kenny Daniels are great fun imo.
Even though I am an Avs fan who lives in Toronto, I miss Mike "Doc" Emrick. He truly was the best to ever do it
I made him a sandwich at Roast&Toast in Petoskey Michigan, great guy.
Us wings fans are spoiled. Imho we have the best tv AND radio announcers. Ken kal and paul woods are awesome.
Hes gotta listen to ken kal and paul woods on the radio for Detroit they've been together as long as Redmond and Daniels have. Both are amazing to listen too, you learn a lot about the game as well and you get the stories because they have all been in the motorcity for awhile now.
Agreed. When the Wings are TNT or something, I listen to Ken and Paul and don’t feel like I’m missing out at all!
As a cats fan living outside of the US, I love listening to Goldie and Moller. Makes me so excited to watch my team play
Ken Kal and Paul Woods on 97.1 does the radio side for the Detroit Red Wings are great too.
As a wings fan I’m spoiled with Mickey as a broadcaster almost my entire life! He is absolutely a delight!
I do what you do Shannon and watch almost all games and on all types of different broadcasts. Each one definitely has a personality of its own
Jack Michaels, Louie Debrusk, and Gene Principe have great chemistry for the Oilers! Glad they at least got a mention.
😂 next you’ll tell us that bob staufer doesn’t cry and whine about the refs for half the broadcast.
Jack Michaels is a top notch play by play announcer, great voice and keeps the game exciting.
What time was that at? I couldn’t hear that
I always enjoy it when Louie has to call a game against the Bruins.
I feel that the Avalanche broadcast definitely took a step back since McNab passed away (
Moser is getting up there with edwards in my book.
People never talk about Pierre Houde and Marc Denis at RDS because of the language barrier, but they are good ! Love them
Can't wait for the TV deal to end and everything hockey to go back on RDS. TVA sport will fold which s*cks for general sports coverage, but their hockey broadcast is sub-par compared to Pierre et Marc
Josh and Razor in Dallas are so criminally underrated, I really do love their work
He's obviously not RJ (because nobody is), but I really enjoy listening to Dan Dunleavy for the Sabres, and he balances fairness while still showing enthusiasm for the Sabres when they score/win.
RJ was gonna be tough to follow up for anyone, but I think Dunleavy has done a decent job of it so far.
His dad Dan was the man. He called some big games. Good memories.
John Kelly was terrific when he worked for Colorado. I was jealous of St Louis when he went there.
I saw the title first, and my thought immediately was "have Mickey Redmond."
Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin are the 🐐s imo. Alan May, Al Koken, Alexa Landestoy too for pre/int/post. Solid all around for the Caps 🦅
I think Alan May has really grown into his role. When he started man he was rough. But Joe b. And Craig need to be much higher on this list.
fully agree
I really like that Butch is always super critical of the islanders when they are playing poorly. You can tell he loves the game and loves the team.
@@RRaquello Hes okay but i miss Chico, I listen to the radio sometimes just for him.
Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond:
Love Mickey and Ken. Also fond of chicagos guys too
Gary Thorne, Dave Strader, and Kenny Albert are the play by play goats imo. Micky and Bill Clement are probably the best on the colour commentating side.
They are the best I miss these guys so much
@@jon-pauljeandron4439 Same here, RIP Dave Strader as well, gone too soon. There are some good newer commentators that I like, one Icthink is Bob Wichusen, and the other is I think the LA Kings play by play guy (the young one not the old one), but he has done some other games and I really like listening to him.
Gary and Bill are still my favorites. Pretty sure Bill Clement still announces the Flyers, but I definitely miss Gary.
Doc???
@@rbaki94 Not my cup of tea personally.
Darryl Reaugh is off the charts as a colour commentator. Joe Beninati is the best at play-by-play.
Love Razor and Josh on the Dallas broadcasts! There's nothing better than a random Razor-ism 😂
Mickey Redmond is a treasure. ❤ #LGRW
Grew up listening to Mick and Ken and it’s pretty cool to still have them as the Wings Broadcast team after all these years. Osgood and John Keating are great too though can’t leave them out!
8:16 Reminded me of Jim Hughson and the NHL games back in the late 90s - early 00s. As an outsider was fun listening to him on Canucks and HNIC games.
Awesome as a wings fan to see people outside of Detroit appreciate our broadcast. I absolutely love it. The best. I miss them when the games are on TNT or ESPN
Anyone and I mean anyone is better than Jack Edwards, the fact he still has a job blows my mind
He is absolutely dreadful. He sounds like a random drunk spectator was tossed in the broadcast booth.
If Bruins fans tune in at a level they are happy with, there is your answer. That being said, I won’t listen to him, but I’m not a Bruins fan.
Doesn’t even know the names of opposing players.
Without question, the 2 most unwatchable feeds to watch are Boston's and Washington's.
Edwards and Brickley were some of the best at making a broadcast enjoyable to watch and listen to.
Like Crosby 3+ shots will be one, and then they'll talk about the top line's chance creation or something
i like the flames when rick ball and kelly hrudy are doing it a lot
A whole heartedly agree with you on the gambling talk from here in New Jersey.
I absolutely love Razor for Dallas, his vocabulary adds so much to the commentary lol
Still remember his call on the replay of Kronwall's hit on Clowe "there are hits, and then there are CALAMITIES"
Mind Vitamins
he's incredible !
“More moves than a snake falling out of a tree”
Shit, I forgot the best one from Downey's one-punch on Boulerice: "DISCARD WHAT YOU DON'T NEED"
Dave Strader....one of the best! When I heard he was gonna be Dallas' PBP guy after Ralph Strangis left, it felt like we hit the big time. And you knew he was really into seeing the team succeed. Gone way too soon!
He was with Dallas for so short a time, but we got a treasure with him. Gone way too soon. RIP
@@TracyJean1972 Amen! His emotional investment in the team was truly infectious. Don't get me wrong at all...Josh Bogorad is doing a great job as pbp man, but with Strader, you got something and someone special...especially with that national background
Blues fans miss Panger.
Him and JK were magical together.
I listened to the Chicago feed for the last Blues/Hawks game and it was like the old days. I hope Hawks fans know how lucky they are to have Pang.
I also like Jack Michaels and Louie Debrusk on Rogers Sportsnet doing Oilers games
listening to a Boston broadcast is the most painful thing one can do. I feel like the game is in slow motion , it’s infuriating lol
Edwards and Brickley were some of the best at making a broadcast enjoyable to watch and listen to.
Edmonton has a gem in Jack Michaels
Commentators I like: Shorthouse, Rosen, Forslund, and Cuthbert. Least favorites: Edwards and Moser, and I'm an Avs fan. Color commentaters: Pang, Ferraro, Olczyk, Redmond, and the late Peter McNab. I miss Gary Thorne and Bill Clement.
On radio..The Leafs duo of Joe Bowen and Jim Ralph..Homers, ya..but great fun..
Hey Shannon, the Flyers are still broadcasted by NBCSports like San Jose and Chicago
I miss Bob Kurtz. Joe O'donnell is ok but I dont like his voice and I dont think he paints as good a picture as bob.
Ralph and Razor will always be iconic for Stars fans
Mickey Redmond must be protected at all cost
The only things you don't need are Jack Edwards or Pierre Maguire and your broadcast will be fine.
And I'm a lifelong Bruins fan
The TSN 1200 Ottawa crew is legendary. Gord and Dean are world-class commentators
Several things
Brian Boucher was brutal the other night on TNT.
Videos have been insane good lately. Thank you so much!
I really expected to see Dave Goucher for the Golden Knights on here, really miss him in boston
Still miss Doc
Mike was the G.O.A.T.
I was thinking this when I was watching the Rangers Wings game the other day. I don't miss the color commentary though.
Doc made EVERY play sound exciting...legit one of the best.
Unfortunately he was paired with Pierre so often down the stretch.
I was about to watch something else and I clicked on this instead just to make sure Daneyko was on the board 😅. You never disappoint me brother. Favorite new channel I found this season.
Blessed growing up with Ken Wilson in Saint Louis on TV&Radio. Joe Micheletti was solid color guy too with him.
Also, you need a catch phrase. “Oh baby” is legendary
