  • Freddy Gale (Jack Nicholson) wants revenge on John Booth (David Morse), the man who accidentally killed his daughter in a drink-driving incident. When Booth is released from prison after six years, Gale vows to kill him...
This is the surprisingly moving end to the movie - with fantastic performances from Nicholson and Morse.

The most beautiful, emotional, surprising ending to any movie I have ever seen. I cried hard, still do no matter when I see it. Quite outstanding by both actors.

I recently rewatched this often overlooked classic, and I like how it shows at the end that sometimes it’s better to forgive than to retain a feeling of bitterness. What Booth did could not be undone, even though he wished with all his heart that he could take it back. Even though Freddy obviously didn’t condone what happened, it was best to just come to terms with what couldn’t be changed, forgive and move on with his life.

I still weep, for the pain men cannot express for the violence of their actions. How like me these two men are.

Such a profoundly moving film, and one of my favourites. And it’s been such a shame to see Sean Penn turn into a detestable woketard prick.

In a sense it is. But within the language of the movie, its about 2 men in so much pain, and both at some level unable to face their pain which is the first step to healing. So that final scene, where Both men finally go to the grave so they can face the pain of guilt and loss and there, they can finally begin to heal. Whuilst it may not be strictly a realistic ending, I think it is a powerful and poetic one.

It wasnt, its was perfectly fitting to the material and quite deeper than you think. But you have to have experienced actual remorse to grasp it. Understanding the damage that your actions have caused to other people, can truly devastate you like nothing else in the world. Thats true remorse and its extremely rare, in comparison to how often the word is used, extremely rare. This is the basis of the scene.

I don't see a man breaking down. I see a broken man healing by finally allowing himself to grieve.
I would like to imagine he serves his time in jail, and then comes back and tries to repair his relationship with his remaining children... and perhaps is even able to have an amicable relationship with his ex wife.

The entire plot of the film is actually about Nicholson's need - and plan - to kill his daughter's killer. It's only when he gets the chance to kill him that he realises what he really needed was to accept his daughter's killing; accept it was an accident and his daughter's killer was sorry and is suffering too; and accept that killing him wouldn't solve anything. As the old saying goes "when seeking revenge, dig two graves - one for yourself...". It's a very powerful ending.
