In my opinion, coders often have difficulty selecting viable business ideas. The more technically minded someone is, the harder it is to see the forest through the trees.
Google Analytics is free in this space and very mature. With that said, you may discover a unique niche with fresh eyes on the problem that creates an opportunity. Also something to be said about discovering for yourself how to build something and this certainly sounds like a great learning experience no matter the business outcome!
Yes, I'm excited about the learning experience. However the reason I believe this is a viable idea is that Google Analytics is overly complex, requires a steep learning curve and it's not GDPR compliant.
Awesome way of combining a lifestyle blog with tech talk! For the business idea, the space seems super interesting, the question though is how can you set yourself apart? I feel like with analytics there are already a ton of tools out there and still most people just use Google Analytics. But will be interesting to see how you implement it within your OneWindow application!!
Hey thank you, that’s a great question! In contrast to GA, I would love to focus on privacy and ease of use. Secondly I’m sure that in the process of making this product in the open I’ll be able to get very valuable feedback that will help inform my decisions. But I am very excited to share how Im using it myself as I go 😃
@@withmarko in the video (3:57) you said that third criteria of your start up idea - it should be something that you had experience with... didn't get how much experience you have with analytics, and what problems businesses have with tools such GA, which your solution will solve...
@@withmarkoYeah GA is definately not the only one. In the security operations space we often use Splunk, Elastic, Datadog etc. and depending on the network architecture some advanced data pipelines like Cribl Stream. A lot of them can be hosted by yourself, be it onprem or the cloud, so the privacy point is already taken into account. Definately a lot of solutions on the market. Don't want to talk you out of it, but there really is a ton of big data/analytics plattforms with it's own set of USP's. That's why the argument that not a lot of people would want to build this kind of app, doesn't quite work in my mind. There's already so many ^^' Maybe a specialization on a certain set of logs/API's with prebuilt Dashboards would be a worthwhile USP. Just like the big ones do already for the security or cloud space. Pozdrav!
@@withmarko There are many other options that respect users privacy, such as Plausible or Umami (this one can be self-hosted). But I had in the back of my head a similar idea to create privacy friendly analytics that will be easy to scale and will provider more info than just how many users visited site. Some funnels, some performance analytics
I think it is going to be some tough space to crack. If you are planning for logs, ELK stack already exists which provide a lot of options as well as it is open source. If you are planning something for metrics then Grafanaa(also open source) and datadog are widely used.
Wowwwww Dust in the wind, I love to play eletric guitar i was playing a few minutes ago and you apeared just playing hahahah thats awesome, "I close my eyes only for a moment and the moment's gone"
If you’re using postgresql consider timescaledb for better performance. Also use materialized views for precomputing analytics. A better database choice would be clickhouse as it has automatic materialized view refresh.
Wish you all the best with this project, and thank you for sharing your approach - it allowed me to reflect on how I prototype and develop web application
The difference you can make is not enabling people to log or send analytics (a lot of services already exists for this), but the way we traverse / lookup the information from the logs, analytics. Think about how developers look at logs and why, and what are the use cases. There is a lot of potential there.
Good luck with your project! Been following you for a while, enjoying all your work and beautiful Norway. Welcome to my country, Greece! Have the best time and please be careful of the scorching hot sun. Greetings from a train driver, tech enthusiast and follower of yours!

Hello Marko, I see your videos almost daily and I really like them. One suggestion regarding a project which you can make is giving a notification in windows that the text is copied, or something like that. If there is a software of this kind please let me know. Thank you so much, Keep up the good work. Regards
So first off, yay to the drawings. They are really nice and I like the fact that you're trying to integrate more of your interests in the video. Second, do you feel comfortable playing the guitar where we can hear it? I'd like to hear you play if possible. Third, I am really not experienced in app development or coding of any kind really. The most I can do with these videos is keep up and actually understand what you're talking about, but that doesn't mean I like them any less. But you do make me wish I knew how to code better so I could give you some actual decent feedback but I will just cheer you on from the comments section, you're awesome and I love you and your videos!
Hey thank you, I'm glad you like this more creative style of video, it's also more enjoyable for me to make. That intro part was me actually playing, I recorded it with a lav mic on the guitar 😄 But I'm not in great musical shape, since I don't have a guitar in Oslo, and I only know the songs I learned years ago 😄 Thank you for such a positive message, I'd be happy to help you learn more about coding if you like. Yo im a viewer for about 1 year and you inspired me to start learning coding. oh and guess what... I leave in greece, hope you have a perfect time here
What you started as a personal project already exists. From a business standpoint it rather makes sense to solve a problem where there is no solution yet or make a product that is 10x better than the best existing product.
in a benchmarking perspective, Google analytics holds even more data for a reasonable price, I wish you all the best but you have a hell of a lot of competition
Welcome to Greece mate, Hopefully you will have a great time here! The internet speeds are a common issue in greece especially in the islands, imagine that in most islands the (not all of them) the highest internet connection you can get is 24mbps, and in mainland telecommunication companies just started setting up Fiber connections with 1gbps speed... Yeah we have sun but i our internet sucks big time.
Hey thanks! 😃 I plan on having a basic script that can be used to capture simple website analytics automatically, and then an API similar to Amplitude for capturing user interaction data. I'm still considering different ways of storing the data, but from a high level it will be an analytics DB for querying and then a file store for backups 😃
I have watched your video about working in Kahoot office about year ago. I was 13, and I dreamt to have job in IT, buy macbook. Now Im FullStack Developer in government company and bought macbook😁 That video gave me a lot of motivation, thx bro!
