Its great to see you've not lost you're sense of humour
Wink wink nudge nudge. So glad to see you back at it with a smile on your face and your sense of humour on point.
Hi James.
That's a lot of wasted storage space in the shower. Put a hinged door on the side next to the khazi, or cut an access panel through from under the dinette... You'll need access to the gulper for maintenance / cleaning.
It was nice of the plumber's merchant to deliver those fittings. ;o)
Take care, mate.
Nils bastardus carborundum.
Put a small incline on the shelf in the shower so the water runs off into the enclosure. It will stop pooling too.
I would use silicone to secure your shower tray. It is flexible as opposed to tile adhesive.
Silicone is not an adhesive it is a sealant so totally wrong for the job.
Actually silicone is used in many things and there are silicone adhesives. The particular advantage of silicone adhesive is that it stays flexible and very water resistant.
@@davej7458 There are far better adhesives than silicone based ones that are also water resistant and flexible enough and have far better adhesion for bonding a shower tray to a piece of plywood. Anyway James has more major issues to think about before he even thinks about bonding the shower tray in - such as water proofing his cheap plywood walls around the shower before tiling. It would not surprise me if he painted them with PVA glue as that seems to be his answer to everything. I only watch his videos to see how to not fit out a narrowboat. :)
Good to see you back James. 👍
Hi James, great to see the progress, you take care and stay safe.
When youre water proofing edges with PVA, its easier to dilute PVA.. it'll be easier to apply and it'll soak into the fresh wood a bit before it cures giving a better seal, plus it'll go further. Thats a good solid shower base, miles better than a hollow plastic one. Good stuff.
Really very sorry but waterproofing with any kind of PVA is a totally and utterly pointless waste of time. The stuff simply isn't waterproof or even water resistant. Epoxy is the choice of boatbuilders and that is what you should use.
Another great video!
Good to See you back !
good to see you back
Is that a ... no it can’t be ... the shower tray has arrived excellent!!! Good video thanks for the updates it’s looking good. Cheers.
Great to see you back mate !!
Glad to see you back and the charm returns as well!
lol nice one welcome back!!! great having stuff delivered :)
Your doing a great job James
Great to see you back James. Pleased to see you had so many deliveries 😜 and some were same day 😂
What service !!
Good one james👍
Nice one James good to see you back .
Good to see you back James. Great vlog
Hi James I have been watching your channel since the beginning. How the heck you have found the time to carry this project and work full-time astounds me. Hats off to you Sir.
Your'e making amazing progress. Really enjoy watching the vids and catching your updates.
Good to see you back on form mate.
Glad you can get all these things delivered 😂
Nice and informative again James. You look a lot more relaxed then in the last vlog. PS Watch out for them shower police… don’t leave the boat… they’ll have ya!!! 😉
Excellent and informative vlog ...thank you....stay safe 💕
It’s all taking shape now James. Nice one.
Nice to see you back dude
Hi James, great to see you showering on🤪 one thought, i would really be thinking of storage in that cavity your making...room for cupboard for toiletries and rolls etc or laundry bin..definitely wouldn’t be closing it off. Even access from inside your dinette would be useful as you never know when you need to get to those drain pipes.
Keep on doing what your doing, you have more friends than you know 😀
Woohoo you are back ! Missed my fix yesterday
Another very professional job done James, I can see you getting jobs fitting out other people’s narrow boats haha. Nice to see you back to your cheerful self 👍
Great to see you back and with your humor intact.
Hey! Thanks Amy. I saw your comment - thanks and hopefully that’ll be the end of it.
Evening James. Woohoo 🙌 I’ve caught up at last lol 😆 You can see why people are being so generous as your channel is absolutely fantastic 👍🏻 Hope you can get some decent rest with a brew before you do some more 😁 Cheers for all the entertainment while you building The Narrowboat that James built. Stevie 😎
Mate I can’t believe you’ve caught up. Glad you have. Now it’s the shower !!
Hi James love your channel it’s coming together nicely now mate 👍
Keep up the good work
Thanks for sharing. Nice to see the shower tray. You can get hose's from any aquatics or pond garden centre's. Stay safe, Anthony.
Great effort James taking shape now. Keep going matey. 👊🏻
Cheers mark 👍🏼
It's very chicken and the egg, getting my head around what to do first pipes /floor etc, lol you are doing great mate keep going.
Good to have the Vlogs back on track. Yes...looks amazing what can be brought to your boat when you need things? 🤫
Re shower and tilling suggest: Use a bonding agent on the walls such as bal bond sbr , cement based flexable tile adhesive and cement based grout. All from tops tiles. Possibly could use the cement based adhesive under the shower base aswell. Topps tiles do coloured silicone to match their grout aswell. I am suggesting this as showers are damp and boats vibrate and cement adhesive is stronger and more waterproof I believe, so the tiles will stay on the walls and not fall off if you bump something.
Hoses- vast selection at Midland chandlers where you said you got your skin fittings from. Use clear reinforced plastic hose. Also suggest chandlers at Wilton marina. Out of interest Norbury Wharf has a boat for sale with two cylinder air cooled diesel with gearbox that looks the same as yours. Cheers, and happy working on your home.
Hi James. Just a tip from other half. The shelf part you have put in the shower would be better with a slight slope so it will drain into the shower even if the boat is listing the wrong way.
My thoughts, too. OR.......A permanent list to provide a run off????. No, maybe not!
Really enjoying all the vlogs. Hoses of all shapes and sizes can the found at a good “aquatic shop” . Pond keepers use them for their
pumps and filter systems - just a thought!
spot on mate, hope you are well and good...Mag drill very posh, have used one a couple of times, cost a few quid but worth it, you only get one try when drilling marine so might as well do it properly, all the best bud...Alex
Top Showering Young James :-)
Looking great now, I would of lower the bump out to make a seat and a slight angle to allow water to run off,
Nice to see you building again.. Take care of yourself and looking forward to more..
Hi James love the I haven't been anywhere quips 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 you have done your shower almost the same as I always do mine you fit the shower control in the recess so no knocking into it I never use tiles in my showers what I always use is vinyl flooring fixed to the walls with impact glue as it is in sheets no gaps you just silicone down the corners never falls off the walls like tiles and will never wear out in my boat we have shades of blue and silver mosaic pattern we think it looks great
Haha! Good minds thing alike Keith !!
I’ll make an access hatch so I can use the space behind - I’ll use mosaics inside like you. Do you have a simple thermostatic mixer and hose
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt Hi yes I just use a standard thermostatic bar shower mixer like you have in a normal house shower
@@bigKDL great, thanks
That's a brillant idea, never thought of that one,, 2mm solid vinyl sheets, waterproof, tough and decorative... Thanks for that seed of info...
@@theworth123 Hi I have personally used vinyl flooring as shower lining instead of tiles on the last four of my narrowboat but sadly it wasn't my idea a friend told me about it and he had been using it for years happy to pass on the tip
James, I enjoy your vlog so much, but may I make a comment? My late husband and I restored over 17 home and one thing we did was clean up the area everyday and during each project, it makes the job so much easier. I still sorry for your troubles yesterday, but good it see you are carrying on so well.
Sharon you have such a tidy mind, and you are right too, I find it hard to motivate faced with a mess at the begining of a work day...
Shower tray at last!
Hey James,, your shower would be big enough for me on my boat, as I'd be in there for 10 minutes per month, it's a great area for a shower. Do use waterproof and flexible adhesive for the tray and tiles though then nothing will bump off in a collision.. Bytheway, if you get a fine from the police let me know I will gladly donate a bob or two towards it along with others here too I'm sure they would. Do let us all know the outcome... Keep smiling and I'm still watching in hope of the electric instal along with other stuff.
Good to see you back and progress being made
Ignore the negativity
Try Hamms in Mkt Harborough for the hose. Also a Bosch hole drill set from screwfix and a standard drill will cut all your hull holes. Just done all of mine. I’m over the road in the Marina doing the same thing if you need anything. Have a large sheet white PVC sheet I used for shower ceiling spare also. Mat.
Hi Mat
Good tip cheers. Ooh over the road looks rather nice - I popped in there once as a package got delivered incorrectly !!
Mate that shower sheet would be amazing if you’re happy to let it go if spare.
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt I’ll leave my mobile number at the wharf office so you can get hold of me and we can organise something properly socially distanced, of course.
@@matfowler that would be great. Many thanks 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
So we are going to get a video of James demonstrating the shower...? I'll have to get some wine :).
I heard that the shower tray had arrived...but im sure it's just a rumour!! Yay!!
Happy days 🛀🏻...💙👊😎
Things are really happening fast now. Can't wait till tomorrow
Hi James. Great vlog. Could you mount your shower taps on the horizontal shelf? Less to catch you elbows on?
Hi James I placed my shower tray on silicone as it will slightly move,I get all my pipe from a local aquatic centre boats coming on great
The Boat that Guy built is an interesting watch. It’s Guy Martin, British motorcycle racer, lot of historic pieces in the show that he uses on his narrow boat.
Mate i would be water proofing more before you put down the tile adhesive if there is a point open water will find it just a thought old mate
Lol. Nice one mate. Loving the shade you’re throwing. Showers taking shape. Are you getting a proper feel for it yet?
"I've run out of brushes" .....not saying a word 😉🙃
Hi James, Have you tried aquarium centers for your tube, they sell it in different sizes reinforced for filters and pumps, hope this helps.
Crack on James, don't let the jealous cretins get you down, another good vid.stay safe.
great to see you back watched half of your journey to london wow
Yes - that's the journey to and around London where he was breaking lock down rules that the police had a chat with him about - that and visiting a total stranger to pick up a propeller a few days ago.
The police visit to tell him off was I imagine nothing to do with the kids visiting like he intimated in his now deleted video - unless that is his ex-missus reported him - which is entirely possible but then I have no idea how she or her solicitor feel about their pot smoking lock down rule breaking dad.
When someone grasses you to the police for a crime you comitted it is normally someone close to you that you have upset.
@@vonasi2 If smoking pot makes you work that hard I need some. You really are a bit of a sad individual. What has it got to do with you, you don't know circumstances.
@@claire4486 I reported these to UA-cam for hate speech, unreal !
@@claire4486 A sad individual is someone who calls someone else a sad individual only when they know that they have the internet between them and the person they are calling a sad individual. I will send you a virtual broken nose in return for your lack of conversational skills.
i did not mean you james it was another couple riding to london and i thought what an exciting journey you will be having soon
I was the hundredth like I found it strangely satisfying.
Hi James, have you looked at using Shower Board? Brilliant stuff but the space might be a little debilitating.
you could try a garden centre ....pond hose...
Just a note re glass it’s recommended to store it on its edge not flat. So if possible stand it up somewhere.
Now you've come to the skin fittings, can you clarify the location and orientation of the gas locker, in particular where the drain hole will be.
No. Because it still hasn’t been decided. It’s tricky because of the shape of the boat above deck. The exit hole should be flush with the boat so we may have to mount it at the back
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt Just checking we have the same understanding of what's needed. I'm sure now we have. Good luck with it al.
Just wondering if you plan using that space under the shower shelf for storage? I get excited to see what you are doing each day.
The area underneath will house the whale gulper and a few large bottles of stuff as it’s fairly generous in there. Above it will be in the shower and will form a seat type thing and some shelves I’m thinking
Oh I forgot about the whale gulper😊
Hi James we have just found your channel having brought an ex hire boat to refurb. We were wondering where you sourced your 175 high shower screen from? We have loved your videos we have seen so far and some great tips.
Yeah there is a measurement that the valve outlet has to be from the water level weather that's 10 inches im not sure but boat yard will tell you or measure the boat next door?
www.boatsafetyscheme.org/requirements-examinations-certification/non-private-boat-standards/part-10-non-private-boats-safety-features/hull-openings/
10”, more if a hire boat.
Dont know if anyone else has suggested it but I noticed your using jointing plates for 90 degree butt joints. Have you considered a cheap pocket hole jig? Loads of choice from Amazon. Although avoid the ones that come with plain flat bottomed dowel drills, the correct drill is specially ground with a reduced diameter tip.
Hi James you're vlogs are great 😀 We're getting a 40ft saleaway lined boat that's being started next week and we are having a 4ft bathroom what size is your bathroom? it looks a little bit bigger and we're hoping we can fit everything in ours. Thanks
Further to Paul's comment a few minutes ago, if your final floor covering is hard, laying your flooring first will avoid having to cut curves in the flooring around your appliances.
Hi James Nice to see you back calmly. Good bathroom plans. I am asking you for info this time, what is the electrical tool you used to cut the slot in the floor near the side wall for the hose to come through, I've not seen one before ?. I'me not young enough to have used one when I was in the trade. (PJ)
It’s called a multi tool. It’s an oscillating blade - that was the plunge blade. It’s a neat bit of kit.
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt Many thanks looks useful
Hi James, Hypehose is a good bet if you have one near you. Automotive and Marine specialists.
Hi James - just working on a 700*700 shower just like yours and wondered where did you get your 40mm to gulper pipe reducer fitting from that's fitting to the drain assembly (at 3m52s in the video)? I've got 40mm pipe that I can't route through the floor because of the bearers, so looking to reduce down to a smaller pipe size to get it all to fit, but can't find the right fitting! Could with exactly what you've got for my shower :-) !! Cheers Mike
Mate I had a nightmare with all that stuff. I ended up taking the measurements and bits to a really good DIY shop and me and the man went through a box of stuff until we found the right fix. If I can find any brand names etc I’ll let you know
Hey James, is it possible to set the shower pump up higher than the shower tray, my shower pump is a sump pump and has to be lower so gravity fills it and it then pumps it away, ?
I'm not an authority on through the hull fittings but it would seem to me that wherever there is a through the hull fitting below the waterline or above. If the boat is sitting low in the water there should be a stopcock on that fitting so that it can be easily closed in the event that you're taking on water at that location.
Hi james Before installing the shower tray are you going to lay the shower room soft floor covering first and then the tray, stcking the floor covering maybe 20cm up the side walls to stop water running out ? just a thought .. keep welll
James, any average quality hss hole saw will easily get through your hull .
Wickes do what's called
Alusplash panels which are painted 2mm aluminium sheets in big sizes
As your not going for Aqua board ( proper job )
Alusplash not a bad alternative
Save tiling
Be mindful of your through-hull fittings being below and even close to the waterline. Ask around about standard practice. You need to be concerned about siphoning canal water into your boat.
Use a one-way valve ( available from Amazon and eBay suppliers )
Hi James are you going to put a vapour barrier between the tiles and bulkhead wall?
No I wasn’t planning on it - would tiles stick to a vapour barrier. I’m also hoping that it’ll be sealed enough !!
What size pipes do you need? how long?
Nice one , you didnt go any where.
Just started the video lmao👍😂
not gospel thought about overhead shower know there expensive could hide the pipe work in the backwall and ceiling are you fitting extracter fan advisable
JAMES!!!
Just had an awful thought! What's the depth of that shower tray?
Bearing in mind that the boat is naturally down at the stern, especially when the water tank is getting low, you have less than 3 degrees of tilt before the water from the shower wont reach the plughole, but will be flowing over a 25mm rim. Is a corner drain an option on that size tray?
Sine 3 x 550(mm from edge of drain to rear rim) = Roughly 29mm
You may want to adjust ballast / tray before final fix.
That’s what feet are for. Obviously the water will gather in the opposite corner to the plug, so I’ll just swish it about with my feet until most of it’s gone. The rest I’ll jest leave there to fester. Plan.
Also I’ll only be doing navy showers
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt Just trying to look ahead for obvious problems before it's too late. As an ex plumber, I would strongly advise setting the tray when the boat is in it's worst possible state of trim. eg. Empty water tank, full diesel tank. etc. That way, it will always drain, with minimal residual puddles to go manky.
@@sarkybugger5009 ok. So if I was to tilt the tray to bow slightly that would work.
I need 8mm of tile adhesive - could I just put a thin batten where I need it to prop it up and then whack down the blobs of adhesive
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt I would say yes to that James, just make sure it is well supported too, to stop a wonky shower tray wobbling loose..
Bathroom layout suddenly makes sense. What happened about the gas installation?
Budget happened!! I need to wait a week or so annoyingly before I can push the button on the gas man
Why on earth didn't you just fit a step it on top of the shower tray? The wasted space is phenomenal! You also have a shelf that will have water all over it every time you have a shower, it's going to be interesting to see how you seal that up, and how long it lasts with only tiles on it? I wouldn't give it more than a couple of years max before you regret no doing a proper job on this bit,
At very least I would use a couple of coats of bitumen on all shower walls and floor, with sand on top coat like on the gunnels of some boats before tiling to get a good fix, better choice would be the kit used for walk in showers and wet rooms. Available at wicks and other builders merchants maybe even screw fix?
what size pipe? How long?
I may have missed something but I'm struggling to understand why you have gone for a shower with two curved sides and then not fitted the two straight sides into a corner of the room.
I’ve tried to explain my positioning of the shower. It’s all to do with ceiling height - it’s an open bathroom so wanted to open doors and walk into room
Are you saying a "whale gulper?" What is that?? (Good to see you back. Hope everything is going to be okay.)
It's basically a pump to suction away waste water as you can't rely on gravity in a narrowboat
It pumps the water from your shower into the canal.
Whale is also the pumps brand name.
Fab job
Yeah a shower running water yeah... should have MADE IT A SEAT in the shower not just a lump in the shower.
That's a cuqboard you are building surely rather than just a boxed in area? Dirty laundry bin? Loo roll storage? Storage always seems to be a big factor on boat sales videos. I know time is against you and you can make modifications later as you work out how to organise your new way of life.
James marine fish shops for hose all sizes and fish pond supplies and there open
Hi James, we got our good quality hoses from a place in the Midlands called CAK Tanks Ltd. They’re quite old school so not sure if they’ll be fully operating during lockdown, but do recommend checking out their website : www.caktanks.co.uk.
Thanks as always for your vids ⚒🤓😀
