HOW TO MAKE A STRONG, WATERPROOF BOAT SHOWER 🛀 Ep.144 Building my steel sailing yacht
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- This episode is all about making Mistress' shower space water proof (and strong too) by applying GRP/fibreglass taping to all of the corners, adding fairing filler to lay down a base that 'falls' to the drain position to drain water and then laying GRP/fibreglass over the whole base to make it all one, strong and water proof sealed area! YES indeed, HAPPY boat builder 😁 👌
Mistress is designed by one of the highly respected Dutch naval arcitects E.G. Van de Stadt, a Caribbean design, length 40ft/12m, beam 13ft/3.9m, draft 5ft/1.5m. Her hull and decks are built in mild steel and I have built her on my own and am also fitting her out on my own. I have not built any type of boat before Mistress.
There were many reasons why, but the work stopped,...
However, the work has re-started, thankfully, and I am on an exciting journey to finish Mistress and then go on my sailing adventures,...
I hope that you can join along with me!

And they say you can't teach old dogs new tricks - aparently not, good work, Bruce. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for your good comments John, appreciated and btw, I don't feel so old 😁🐕👍🏻
I have not been watching your videos for quite a while. It's good to see that you haven't relaxed your quality standards. She is looking really good!
Thanks very much not Chuck, appreciated sir 🙂👍🏻
Looks like you got an awesome result 👍 That peel ply looks satisfying too, like peeling the plastic off a new phone 😁
Hey thanks very much Darian, appreciated mate and yes I think that it's come out pretty good, especially for a complete amateur, ha! There is definitely some satisfaction in removing the peel ply, it might be a male building thing but it's also some anticipation to see what the 'wrapped' work comes out like 😆👌
Captain Bruce, that will be a roomy shower for a vessel your size. Great job and design using the hull configuration space to augment the shower size. 🐻🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks Jerry and yes you are correct, it is a roomy shower space, which was/is important to me 🙂👍
Look at you boat brother, I would put you on as a pro laminator. Outstanding work. Cheers Rossco
Hahaa, thanks very much Master composite teacher, but I reckon I'd start at 'beginner' level mate! 😁👍
This is some shower. Perfect.
Thanks very much Jean, appreciated 🙂👍🏻
That was impressive! The smile on your face after pulling up the peel ply said it all.
It definitely looks as if you're going to be giving Ross a run for his money, when it comes to fiberglass and finishing.
Thank you for sharing and well done you! 👌👍👌👍
Thanks very much for your good comments Léon, much appreciated, but I don't think that I would get even close to Rossco's professional work 🙂👍🏻
I have been shown up yet again. Love it, good onya Bruce.
@@LifeOnTheHulls Thanks again to you for your 'good oil' lessons Rossco! 😁👍
I like the editing of the last few weeks!
Thanks very much for your good feedback Baytep, appreciated 🙂👍🏻
As always, love watching you work,, can`t wait for her to be launched!!!!
Thanks very much for your good comments Ronald, appreciated 🙂👍🏻
Hello Bruce, another fine job. 👍
Thanks very much Para, much appreciated 🙂👍🏻
I remember the problems you had a while back with the epoxy(?). So nice that this came out first time!
Thanks for your good comments Steven, appreciated 🙂👍🏻
Ahh Bruce, now just think about this for a second. With all the fiberglass experience you now have you can build another boat out of fiberglass ....lol you did a great job even with all the lack of experience you had with it, but now that box can be checked , now for bigger and better projects.
Thanks for your good comments Jeff, appreciated sir and aaahhh, no thanks! 😬But yes, I definitely gained what I call 'enough' confidence to do the GRP work I need to ahead and perhaps help out others too 👍🏻
Excellent job, Bruce! I like your squeegee idea!
Thanks very much RMA, appreciated 🙂👍🏻
Another sick job completed Bruce, coming tougher just beautifully.Keep at it mate.
Bloody autospeller changed together to tougher
Thanks very much for your good comments Andrew, appreciated mate 🙂👍🏻
@@andrewmoylan6295 understood and I knew what you meant, thanks!
Looks awesome as usual! If you ever do a shower floor again you can mix sand wih resin and create a really nice slope all around to the drain then glass over it.😎
Thanks very much Paul, appreciated 🙂👍🏻
Good job man! Hot showers will be available soon I see ...and after a hard days work they will be an absolute satisfying reward of your efforts!
Thanks very much for your good comments Konstantinos, appreciated 🙂👍🏻
Well done (as always)!! 👍
Thanks very much Mats, appreciated 🙂👍🏻
Genius!
Thanks Humberto, appreciated 🙂👍🏻
Great shower !
Thanks Whitney, appreciated sir 🙂👍
good job on the glassing, looks great!
Thanks very much Kevin, appreciated 🙂👍🏻
Thanks for another great one Bruce, could feel your excitement and pleasure tearing back that peel ply!
Thanks very much supers, appreciated and yes, it was good 😁👍🏻
Fantastic job ...
Thanks very much Paul, appreciated 🙂👍🏻
An absolute credit to you Ross and of course you have earned another BRAVO ZULU from me. I always look forward to you vids and joining you on getting that Mistress, of yours, in the water and to start another chapter if your life, on the water. Cheers Ross!
Uh.... This is BRUCE, who is building SV Mistress of Freedom.
Ross, with his wife Janet, are building a catamaran and sharing with the world on their UA-cam channel Life On The Hulls.
Hey Warren, the man is Bruce not Ross.
Thanks for your good comments Warren, appreciated mate 🙂👍🏻

Thanks very much brother, appreciated 🙂👍🏻
Awesome Job!
Thanks very much Justin, appreciated 🙂👍🏻
Well you certainly have built a place to ride out the end of the world! Where will you store your rations?
😁 Thanks for your good comments Peter, appreciated and if/when needs be I would be able to stow up to ~10 months of supplies 🙂👍🏻
Great, next month I am redoing the shower and making a dedicated sump for it. You are showing me the way. Great job.
Thanks for your good comments, appreciated and all the best with your shower reno. work 🙂👍🏻
Good work. Coming along nicely.
Thanks very much, appreciated 🙂👍🏻
top job
Thanks very much Thomas, appreciated 🙂👍🏻
Great job, I know the feeling when it turns out looking, feeling good and knowing it was a good job done. Love your videos, people should share it more.
Thanks very much for your good comments, much appreciated and yes, it would be so appreciated if a lot more people could support my small channel 🙂👍🏻
Thanks mate..
Thanks Trev, appreciated 🙂👍🏻
Taking off peelply is as much fun as peeling sunburn, isn't it?
Thanks for the question Tim but I reckon that peel ply is better 😁👍🏻
@@BuildingSYMistress I'm with you Brewski. It's weirdly satisfying, especially as you know it's cutting down your sanding time.
@@timdunn2387 Indeed mate! 😁
Great result on the fibreglassing - looking really good. Feels like some great progress!
Thanks very much Dave, much appreciated 🙂👍🏻
That is such good and exacting work you do Bruce. Well done.
Thanks very much Graham, appreciated 🙂👍🏻
I have a question, cause I'm building the interior of my steelboat and I was wondering,
Aren't you scared about not being able to check for rust underneath your shower ?
It would be really helpful to have your feedback 😊
Merci/thanks for your good question Maeva, appreciated and no I am not scared because of two main reasons, the shower sole flooring is made of marine plywood and then multi coated with epoxy resin and then two layers of GRP/fibreglass and secondly I have full access underneath this sole floor in the bilges space below it!
All the best with your boat work 🙂👍🏻
Right on, truly enjoyed this episode, well done sir looking forward to seeing more of your channel, take care and thanks for sharing all that you do…
Thanks very much for your good comments Clifton, appreciated sir 🙂👍🏻
Could you tell me what the purpose of the peel ply is?
Thanks for your good question Bill, it has several great features - it really helps in smoothing out the resin film over the glass cloth, it also smooths out and feathers the cloth edges discretely, it basically stops resin sag on vertical surfaces, it absorbs any amine blush in the resin and a huge plus is that because of the matrix surface left once it's removed, no sanding is required 🙂👍🏻
is ok but nowhere did you mention the hole and drainage where does it go?
Thanks for your comments and feedback Mark, appreciated, the drainage is explained in this earlier episode - ua-cam.com/video/KegzLszwL2g/v-deo.html&ab_channel=BuildingSYMistress 🙂👍🏻
nowhere in that video does it actually show the drainage only the pump container?@@BuildingSYMistress
@@gatecrasher1970 Ok, understood and I appreciate your further interest, to explain that most things in boats are not simple, so the shower water will drain into that sump box then be pumped up to what's called a vented loop above the waterline, which prevents sea water being syphoned back into the boat, then it continues being pumped overboard through what's called a through hull fitting below the waterline. All of the main parts are installed for this which can be seen in episodes 163 and 164, however I have not put together yet the episode showing everything connected up with hoses, which will be coming out soon and make all of this much clearer.
