We all know Alicia Vikander's Oscar is for 'Ex-Machina'.
But it’s not…
She would have gone from #10 on this list to probably #6 or #5 honestly if she won for Ex Machina. A great true SUPPORTING role.
I was going to same thing, which is why I'm happy with her win.
About 1 month ago, I spied a blu-Ray of "Ex Machina" at a Goodwill store. I snapped it right up!
It was Oscar bias against genre films. Meanwhile she gets the win for arguably one of the most forgettable films ever made.
One thing I’m glad for is that Lupita has stuck around for as long as she has after her Oscar win. She could’ve easily been a flash-in-the-pan actress who won her Oscar and fell into obscurity. But she’s still out there, still knocking it out of the park, delivering excellent performances one after the other. Even when she has a film where the script isn’t that great, she seems like the one who’s trying most of everyone. The film world is such a better place with her in it.
I totally agree.
I'm still shocked that Lupita was close to 30 when filming the movie. I thought she was 16 to 20. Currently, she looks around 25; she's 41, actually.
After 35, extra pounds make one look younger. Maybe darker skin has the same effect. Excluding ones obesed with being tanned in their youth.
Lupita stole the show during that award season. She was serving fashion at every award show.
A star was really born
Knowing Lupita was going to be number 1 before I even clicked play lol
What a masterclass in acting 👏🏽
The thing with Laura Dern, when she won, she was one of the governors of the acting branch of the Academy, who already had significant influence over the people choosing the award. She ran a solid campaign, and no one really tried to fight her for it.
wow, sounds like a conflict of interests, doesn't it?
Lupita!! Still devastated by her snub in Lead Actress for Us 😢
That film was outstanding
Four out of the top five being phenomenal performances by black women ❤
If only the Academy had the same energy for Lead Actress
@@PenaltyKillah AGREED
@@PenaltyKillah💯💯💯
@@PenaltyKillahI really think Viola Davis could have won in lead for Fences that year honestly.
@@PenaltyKillahwho? What year?
It is crazy how many actresses from The Help have gone on to win Oscars.
i think maybe the subject matter of the help hasn't aged that well (in the sense that it's like, black women's struggles, but largely from a white woman's perspective) but there's no denying that was an ensemble cast for the ages
Whoever was the casting director should really get more work. It's incredible that none of the main actresses had Oscars by then and now we have Viola, Octavia, Emma, Jessica, and Allison
You didn’t mention but Laura Dern is Hollywood royalty. Her parents never won Oscars so Laura won. Think of Gwyneth Paltrow or Mira Sorvino.
Or Jamie Lee Curtis? ;)
@@johnnzboy Her, too
My Top 10 Best Supporting Actress Oscar Rankings of the 2010's
1. Patricia Arquette (Boyhood)
2. Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave)
3. Viola Davis (Fences)
4. Octavia Spencer (The Help)
5. Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk)
6. Allison Janney (I, Tonya)
7. Melissa Leo (The Fighter)
8. Laura Dern (Marriage Story)
9. Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables)
10. Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl)
So early that La La Land won Best Picture
Number 1 is correct! But would have put Viola higher (although she should have been lead)
Lupita is Amazing
Laura Dern waa over due. She is also Hollywood royalty. Her mama and papa are huge superstars
Pretty little lies was also a huge hit. She was on fire during that era
People forget that having a popped-off TV show alongside the nominated film is a huge help. Just this year alone we had Emma Stone with The Curse and Poor Things and Jodie Foster with Nyad and True Detective
I will also like to add that I believe Regina King should’ve received an Oscar nomination for Ray. I think she’s amazing as supporting actress in that movie with Jamie Foxx.
She dominated every scene she was in.
I’ll even add Jerry Maguire
My Top Ten:
1. Lupita Nyong'o
2. Patricia Arquette
3. Octavia Spencer
4. Viola Davis
5. Allison Janney
6. Anne Hathaway
7. Alicia Vikander
8. Laura Dern
9. Regina King
10. Melissa Leo
Alicia vikander was amazing in a royal affair. A must watch
I agree about Viola, she could’ve gone lead and may win, that would be such a nailbitter race. I think if that happens, Stone would be out and it would’ve come down to Huppert and Davis, with Viola probably winning since the movie is better liked than Elle. I’m interested to know who would’ve replaced Violas spot in supporting that year though, she would take Ruth Neggas spot in lead, I think and in supporting, who would’ve taken the fifth slot and who would’ve won instead? Michelle Williams for Manchester by the Sea?
I think it would have gone to Michelle.
Viola + Michelle that night would have been perfect.
And then Emma would be the lead this year anyway with Poor Things (and I love both hers and Lily’s performances)
@@DiogodocMichelle and Viola winning sounds sooooo correct
I like this 'what if' scenario
I think for the fifth supporting nom it might have been either Janelle Monae for Hidden Figures or Greta Gerwig for 20th Century Women. Either way it would have been a surprise nom as all 5 of these seemed to be locked so if Viola had gone Lead instead of supporting that 5th slot would have been a wild card more than likely.
Another good video. I enjoy the videos by yourself more than the ones with other UA-camrs.
Lupita needs more credit for other things she does as well. She is superb in Us.
If you haven't watched A Quiet Place Day 1 please do so as everything is told on Lupita's incredible face.
Haven't seen A Quiet Place Day 1 yet, do you think she has a chance to join the Oscar race?
In my world Lupita would be in the running for the A Quiet Place Day 1 performance. Alas the Academy won't highlight a horror / creature movie.
I can’t see it happening for Lupita. IMO Blunt should have been nominated for her performance in QP 1: she won SAG that year but didn’t get further for an Oscar nom.
I feel Melissa Leo is number 10! She just not that memorable in the movie, Amy Adams should have won that year. That’s just my opinion.
But she amazing
So good brian make peaple remmber her role again
Part of what helped Dern is that she's been in Hollywood for so many years (part nepo baby but also a very respected actress in multiple genres). I also remember hearing someone say that this kind of Hollywood divorce lawyer was something that a lot of people in the business recognized.
I thought Florence Pugh in LITTLE WOMEN was one of the most over-rated performances in recent years. Especially when you compare her with Kirsten Dunst in the 94 version. (Granted, she didn't play the character all the way through, but she was unforgettable and stole the show in every one of her scenes.)
Here's the reasons why I believe Regina King won the Oscar that year despite missing both SAG & BAFTA. 1. Outside of King, there really was no support for anyone else that season. Emma Stone had won 2 years prior for Lala Land, Marina De Tavira, the nomination was the win itself, no one really wanted to give Amy Adams her Oscar for such a thankless role in Vice . And Rachel Weicsz could've won if The Favorite had performed better throughout the season. And I do think her win at BAFTA was just a BAFTA thing. 2. Regina King had been putting in great performances for years prior to Beale Street. She was great in this show called Southland, She was great in the final season of The Leftovers, and she won 2 Emmys for this ABC show called American Crime, and she managed to win 2 more Emmys after her Oscar win
She was amazing in american crime. What a show.
I'm glad Allison Janney won the Oscar, in I Tonya it's hard to believe that was even her. Everyone had been wanting to give her an Oscar as she had been consistently good for so long in movies and TV and Laurie Metcalf just didn't have the same narrative. Big Little Lies season two had been airing around the same time as Marriage Story premiered so that helped Laura Dern win, she's clearly been better in other movies plus her parents are Hollywood legends. It's so cool that nearly every actresses in The Help are Oscar winners. And even though she didn't win, I'm happy Jacki Weaver was nominated for her chilling turn in the small Australian drama Animal Kingdom.
Janney did something completely different whereas Metcalf sort does the same thing as some other roles I think that’s why Janney was the clear choice.
@@kellie-nd1ypI keep saying this. I love Laurie but Allison Is One of our greatest actress.
I have always thought Regina King is an under appreciated actress. She is so good in everything she does.
Especially in Season 2 of The Leftovers and HBO's Watchmen Miniseries.
Lupita and Regina are definitely my faves. Regina should’ve had at least 2 prior nominations (Ray and Jerry Maguire) and her TV work has been fantastic and a true star was born in Lupita.
Rest of the movie aside, I definitely think Anne Hathaway deserved the win for “Les Mis”.
Unpopular opinion: I would trade Lupita N'yongo win for 12 Years to a lead role win in "Us", and give Jennifer Lawrence the oscar because her in American Hustle is her best performance for me, and of course i would take away her undeserving oscar for Silver Linings and give it to Emmanuelle Riva
Brian I LOVE Les Miz! But I’m a mother so I can completely relate to Fantine’s pain! 😢😢😢
I cried at the end of boyhood cuz when I saw it I had just Finished hs so I was masons age when the film ended so it hit me hard
Hi Brian! I’ve seen all of your fantastic videos ranking the 2010s acting winners, and I don’t know if you have it on your plans already, but I would really love to see your ranking on the 2010s best director winners. I assure you I would be first in line to see it. Greetings from Mexico!!
My Ranking:
#10 - Alicia Vikander (On a Technical because She’s Leading) - My Pick: Jennifer Jason Leigh - The Hateful Eight
#9 - Patricia Arquette (Most Underserving Acting Win of the 2010s) - My Pick: Keira Knightly - The Imitation Game (Although I would take all 5 of the Nominees Out of the List)
#8 - Laura Dern (Basically Playing Herself if she Wasn’t an Actress) - My Pick: Florence Pugh - Little Women
#7 - Regina King - My Pick: Amy Adams - Vice
#6 - Melissa Leo - My Pick: Helena Bonham Carter - The King’s Speech
#5 - Octavia Spencer - My Pick: Jessica Chastain - The Help
#4 - Anne Hathaway - Deserved
#3 - Viola Davis - Deserved
#2 - Allison Janney - Deserved
#1 - Lupita Nyong’o - Deserved
to think that Lupita Nyongo won an Oscar for her first movie is just top tier! loved her speech as well
So did Jennifer Hudson, Haing S. Ngor, Mercedes McCambridge, Anna Paquin, Eva Marie Saint, Tatum O'Neal, Barbra Streisand, Marlee Matlin, and Julie Andrews, just to name a few
Viola should have been the Lead Actress of that year.
the thing is, it works in her favor…. if she was lead, she wouldn’t have won, even though she was way better than Emma Stone…. academy history is kinda notorious for overlooking black women in lead, but I’d love to see her as lead winner
Even though it wasnt nearly as popular, I GREATLY prefer the 90's version of Les Miserables with Liam Neeson and Geoffrey Rush
This should be a good one
I loved Allison Janie’s performance
Leslie Manville for me.
Will you do Directing, Screenplay and Picture next or go straight to the 2000s?
The Helen Hunt pick is so true. She is the soul of that film, so thoughtful, and tactful, honest and charming. Is a gentle, understated performance that deserved that win. Great choice!
Leo would’ve been 10 for me (and I’ve seen all of them). It just didn’t hit with me. I like her a lot, especially in Homicide, but I just feel like she was too hammy.
My personal ranking:
1. Lupita
2. Patricia
3. Anne
4. Viola
5. Regina
6. Octavia
7. Allison
8. Laura
9. Melissa
10. Alicia
Lemme ask you something, do you intend to do like a series with the Oscar Ranking from each decade?
It would be awesome
I hope so!
Please make video about Best Pictures Oscars win in 2010s Ranked❤ Thank you🎉
And as much as I enjoyed Octavia Spencer in The Help, I'll go to my grave believing Jessica Chastain gave the better performance.
Kate Winslet was superb in Steve Jobs. She should have won in her year.
10. Melissa Leo - my least favorite win in this category
9. Alicia Vikander
8. Anne Hathaway
7. Laura Dern
6. Lupita Nyong’o
5. Regina King
4. Viola Davis
3. Patricia Arquette
2. Allison Janney
1. Octavia Spencer ( Chastain is equally great)
I just love Octavia Spencer! So glad she won for The Help
Please ranking best picture winns
Regarding Les Mis: a friend who had seen the movie twice before desperately wanted me to see the movie. I love musicals, but I was like "eh" on the trailers. But, I went. I love Hugh Jackman. I like Russell Crowe. I like Anne Hathaway and don't understand the hostility she gets. But, I was pretty much having none of this movie. Then, when the ending comes, my friend just starts sobbing, and I'm a girl who tears up at the slightest things, and I'm looking at my friend going "Why? What am I missing?" I start looking around the theater, and EVERYBODY is crying except for one guy who is doing the same thing I am -- looking around the theater baffled. Our eyes meet, and we exchange nods. Sadly, I never sought him out after the movie, because I think we could be soul mates.
Why do the Oscars tolerate category fraud?
Yes! There should be guidelines for what percentage they are in the film to qualify for supporting. (Like less than 50%)
🤔
I think it’s the studios who decide based on the For your consideration campaign. Viola should have received and won Best Leading Actress, but based on her last nomination they wanted to make sure it’s a for sure win.
@kashaud17 oh it definitely is the studio. Olivia Colman decided she was going to go for best actress in the favorite even though Emma stone and Rachel Weiss were both the co leads really. I don't think it should be up to them though! There should be guidelines in place to make this way more clear and to help eliminate category fraud
Love these videos, Brian. I too think Alison Janney is a great actor but would've preferred Laurie Metcalfe to win that year.
Another great video! I can't find myself disagreeing with you at all in this one.
My rankings:
#1: Regina King
#2: Viola Davis
#3: Allison Janney
#4: Octavia Spencer
#5: Alicia Vikander
#6: Lupita Nyong’o
#7: Anne Hathaway
#8: Melissa Leo
#9: Laura Dern
#10: Patricia Arquette
Both Dern and Arquette are massively overrated and IMO not worthy of even being nominated 🤷♂️
My ranking.
10. Alicia Vikander (I'd of voted for any of the others over her)
9. Melissa Leo (Helena Bohan Carter would of been my pick)
8. Laura Dern (J.lo in Husterls was robbed of a nomination and win)
7. Regina King (Emily Blunt in A Quiet Place was robbed of a nomination and win)
6. Viola Davis (personally my pick would of been Michelle Williams in Manchester by the sea)
5. Lupita Nyong'o (Well deserved, plus I'd of liked Margot Robbie for Wolf on Wall Street to have been nominated)
4. Anne Hathaway
3. Patrica Arquette
2. Alison Janney
1. Octavia Spencer
¨I did it all by myself¨
I would say the same like Allison lol
Dern worn for Marriage Story because the Academy also wanted to award Renata Klein. Having said that, if she had won for Little Women it would have been so much better
great video what about Jamie Lee Curtis it was a great performance
I absolutely agree with you about Helen Hunt. She was wonderful in the The Sessions and was my pick as well. And also the fact that John Hawkes wasn't even nominated for The Sessions for Best Actor is ridiculous to me. Great film. Anne deservedly won for Les Mis, but as much as I'm glad Kate Winslet (one of my favorite actresses ever) won an Oscar, Rachel Getting Married is the film that Anne Hathaway should have won for.
Allison Janney is hysterical in Drop Dead Gorgeous if you haven’t seen it. (Also has Amy Adams!)
I’m glad someone else feels the same about Les Miz. I thought Hathaway was amazing, and quite liked Eddie Redmayne and Samantha Barks, but overall, the movie was meh.
Samantha Barks was my favorite part of the movie
I would like to hear your thoughts on the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor winners of the 00s
Are we getting supporting performances of the 2000s?
This one made me laugh hard.... I despize Patricia Arquette's win, it stands for me as The Second Worst acting Oscar Win of ALL TIME, right up there with Gwyneth Paltrow.
And Anne Hathaway is just simply The Best Support Actress oscar win EVER, she was EVERYTHYNG
Anne Hathaway is the best of all time? Now that’s delusion 😳😳😳
@@garryd7748 Actually not, like, it's kinda obvious tbh... The "I Dreamed A Dream" scene alone already deserved 15 Oscars by itself:
@@bigstan5002 It’s a good scene…. Very powerful and emotive, and one of the best of that year. I don’t mind that she won the Oscar. Best of all time though? Not even close.
the cast differences between the Best lead Actress Oscar Wins vs the Best Supporting Actress Oscar wins is crazy. One is predominantly all white women and the other is majorly black women. it's like the academy award feel like no black actress is worth winning the best lead award
That’s exactly what it is!! Crazy thing is Brian is correct, Viola Should’ve been in the lead actress category, and she should have WON!! The fact that Halle Berry is still the only black women to win the actress category and it’s been more than 22 years it’s ridiculous
Yep, that’s why ish hit the fan with the whole Andrea Riseborough campaign and the Danielle Deadwyler snub. It’s also representative of a significant difference of available lead roles for black actresses who are often confined to supporting roles.
@@stephenhardy8934 it's just very sad that black actresses always have to settle for the supporting role award because that's where they have the highest chance at winning an Oscar
My favourite would be Octavia Spencer for The Help. She stole the film from Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Viola Davis in every scene she was in. A thoroughly deserved Oscar.
Viola definitely should’ve been in Lead Actress for Fences. Ruth’s performance was the safer option for the voters.
This category has had more black actresses win in this decade than any other decade in Academy history
Danish Girl was heartbreaking!❤
Laura Dern played every divorce lawyer Hollywood types ever hired.
Viola Davis ❤
I am biased as I have loved Laura Dern since Smooth Talk.
Laura Dern is great. but in that movie, I don’t know WHY or HOW she won that oscar…..
I would rank Allison Janney higher, but when I saw Viola at number five, I thought twice 😅 her spot in 6th is actually pretty good
I can say with wholehearted confidence that I completely disagree with your list. 😊 but it's fun anyway
Melissa Leo was amazing in the fighter. She stole every scene
Her oscar dress was so bad
Really enjoyable video. Just one thing, I’ve always found Regina King’s Oscar totally undeserved. She stood out for me in Beale Street for all the wrong reasons. She jumped right out the period. I’ve enjoyed her work in other things but never liked this one.
Laura Dern's Oscar win was so undeserving!
Les Mis is just a bad movie with good acting. I'm with you on that.
Can't argue with your number one choice. What a revelation!
I'm with you re: Le Mis!! I never finished the entire film in one sitting (on HBO). Also I agree, that everything comes back to The Help (supporting Cicely Tyson, David Oyelowo, etc.)
Glad to See Regina King in the top 5 of The List. One of my Favourite acting wins of the 2010s
I have never found Laura Dern compelling as an actress, so her win for Marriage Story is absolutely baffling to me
Lupita's face during "SlapGate" at the Oscars summed up the awkwardness in the room. Her roles are fantastic but it's that moment that sticks out to me the most.
My least favorite acting category. It’s usually just wife coattails nods or category frauds.
I don't see Lupita nyong'o as the best winner of the Decade, I liked Octavia spencer and Viola davis better
Alicia's win is rather bitter than bitter sweet because she was a co-lead of The Danish girl, not a side character. Her best supporting actress nom should have been more for Ex-machina.
Same with Rooney for Carol, that category was full of frauds.
I disagree with you about the 2020 race being full of weaker performances. Jojo Rabbit was my favorite movie that year mostly because of the Scarlet Johansson performance. I thought she deserved that Oscar easily.
I think that Scarlett could’ve easily won for Marriage Story too, she gives a more in depth performance than Laura Dern…. but I have to say that I agree also because of Joaquin Phoenix for Joker….. I disagree bcuz of Renee winning for Judy
I think 2020 should of gone to Jennifer Lopez or Zhao Shu-zhen
Les miserable is a terrible movie. Very long and tideous
Thank you! I thought the Danish Girl was the Maestro of its year - not terrible but self-satisfied and oblivious to its mediocrity. I'm glad to see I am not the only one who thought so.
My rankings would be similar to yours. The top 2 would be the same, although Arquette could be #1, although I would ultimately keep Nyongo as #1. I think Alicia Verkander was up for the wrong movie.
Even with Vikander as supporting, the Oscar should ve gone to Winslet instead.
I’m surprised to see so much hate for Arquette. She is just fantastic
Loved your take on Allison Janney, but no mention of how hilarious she was in Drop Dead Gorgeous?
Laura dern not memorable in a marriage story? her monologue was the most memorable thing in that film reminiscent of Marisa tomei in my cousin Vinny imo
I haven't seen if baele Street could talk. I'm not even interested in seeing it
8. Regina King as Sharon Rivers (If Beale Street Could Talk)
7. Octavia Spencer as Minnie Jackson (The Help)
6. Allison Janney as LaVona Golden (I, Tonya)
5. Lupita Nyong'o as Patsey (12 Years of Slave)
4. Mo'Nique as Mary Lee Johnston (Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire)
3. Mellisa Leo as Alice Eklund-Ward (The Fighter)
2. Viola Davis as Rose Lee Maxon (Fences)
1. Anne Hathaway as Fantine (Les Misérables)
Yet to see Boyhood and The Danish Girl.
Yes!!! I would have loved for Florence Pugh to win for Little Women. I was blown away by her ability to take my least favorite of the four March daughters and by the end of the film turn her into my absolute favorite. A huge part of that turn also has to do with Gerwig’s fantastic script, but Pugh’s performance was just perfect to me.
Patricia was also great in holes and underrated performance
Great ranking. Love, love, love Lupita, Regina, Octavia, Patricia, and Alison Janney's wins. Viola's I adore but should be in Lead. Also genuinely not fond of Laura Dern's (weakest in her category) or Alicia Vikander's wins (the category fraud of it all).
Jlo should've been nominated and won over laura dern
Spencer and Davis earned their Oscar's, The Help and Fences are my favorite movies of the 2010's.
I remember when Angela Bassett won her honorary award and she paid tribute to Halle Berry, the only Black woman to win best lead actress, then listed off the many Black women who had won Supporting... and of course they're largely among the best wins of all time, while white winners are more often legacy wins.
"White winners are more often legacy wins"? What a disgusting, embarrassing thing to say.
Regina King and Viola Davis are amongst the legacy wins and arguably not amongst the best wins of all time…
with all her fame, millions and legacy pushing the racial narrative seems hilarious considering the oscars are a dirty system. she is choosing to overlook the amazing things she has and focused on the 'i didnt get it cuz i am black' narrative
Laura Dern was hitting all the right checkpoints and Alison Janney was one of the most surprising Oscar winners because it was so unexpected
