Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby is one of the most amazing performances I've ever seen. It doesn't even feel like a performance, in the best way possible.
Every time I watch it I'm blown away - you can read her character's every emotional shift in her face and body language, and her growing distrust (and the back and forth of suspicion and denial) of those around her... it just all feels like it's happening in real time and it's so good. The movie wouldn't work without her.
Marilyn Monroe - Bus Stop Mia Farrow - Rosemary’s Baby Isabella Rossellini - Blue Velvet Mia Goth - Pearl Rita Hayworth - Gilda Julie Delpy - Before Midnight
I think the fact that actors were turned off by the film and shocking nudity and violence, as well as category confusion plus unproven actress and nepo factor(that factor either helps or works against them) all resulted in her being snubbed. And the sad thing is not only she deserved it but there was room for her in either category since we got filler s out of nowhere like Fonda in the Morning After, Tess Harper in Crimes of the Heart, Piper Laurie in Children of the lesser God.
With Demi Moore in The Substance, I feel like, if she doesn’t get in at the Oscars this year, it’ll at least give her a major career comeback that’ll open many doors for her. It could do for her what Hereditary did for Toni Collette, in a way.
Cameron Diaz really steals the show in MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING. I know it's rare to get a Supporting Actress nom for a comedy, but I think you could make a strong argument for her in that movie.
Why is Christina Ricci always left out of these conversations? She would be right up there for me. I think she should've gotten best supporting for Monster and lead for Black Snake Moan.
I mean even Charlize Theron in her Oscar speech acknowledged her as the film’s “unsung hero”. Her performance in “The Opposite Of Sex” is one of my favorites of all time. Such a mean nasty character, but you still end up loving her. One of the biggest Oscar snubs of all time.
I would also mention Christina Ricci for "Monster", Jennifer Aniston for "Cake", Drew Barrymore for "Scream", Bryce Dallas Howard for "The Help", Evan Rachel Wood for "Thirteen" and Diane Kruger for "In The Fade".
Zhang Ziyi for Memoirs of a Geisha got the SAG, BAFTA and Golden Globe nomination, but eventually missed out at the Oscars in 2006. Still baffles me till today. Her body of work is astounding, from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (BAFTA & Indie Spirit nominated) to House of Flying Daggers (BAFTA nominated), Hero, The Banquet, 2046 and The Grandmaster.
Zhang Ziyi would have been an excellent entry on this list. She should have a minimum of two nominations (CTHD + Memoirs) but as Parasite demonstrated, there's still a long way to go with Asian actors being recognised adequately at the Oscars. Some steps forward in recent years but still a ways to go. Zhang Ziyi is an absolute powerhouse.
Completely agree with you about Jennifer Lopez. I think she started out as a really good actress in her early career (gave an Oscar-worthy performance in SELENA). But around 1999-2000, when she blew up as a sex symbol and icon, her output all declined.
love your videos brian. also love that you FINALLY included diaz in one. two great video ideas: best young actors oscar snubbed (jamie bell, mae whitman, daniel radcliffe), and best actors/rising stars of this generation (zoey deutch, emma watson, miles teller, troian bellisario, etc. come to mind)
Those from the past would make a great list - Myrna Loy, Marilyn Monroe, Ann Miller, Rita Hayworth...the list could go on. Which others do you think were overlooked?
Marilyn Monroe deserved a nom for at least Some Like It Hot, Doris Day was good but definitely not at the level of the other 4 nominees. Also, she was amazing in Bus Stop and the Misfits. Rita Hayworth was robbed of a nom for Gilda. Jean Harlow did enough good films and performances and in her lifetime was already deserving of a nomination by 1935/1936 (Dinner at Eight, Wife vs Secretary, Libeled Lady). I know that Lucille Ball is usually not a common actress to think of when talking about snubs in Oscar history. Still, she has one performance in 1942 The Big Street that definitely at least came close to an Oscar nomination. Veronica Lake should have gotten an Oscar nomination in Best Supporting Actress for So Proudly We Hail. Ann Sheridan is also the best-supporting actress for The Man Who Came to Dinner, Kathleen Byron in Black Narcissus, Linda Darnell's A Letter Two Three Wives, and Barbara Leigh Hunt In Frenzy all in Best Supporting Actress, also some of those years could have definitely accepted them as nominees cause they weren't solid (1949, for instance, was a major weak year overall).
@@willnoiles2001 Unlike the other examples above, Weld did have one Oscar nomination under her belt, when she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her work in Looking for Mr. Goodbar.
Please wear more blue shirts, particularly this shade. You look GOOD and it goes with your beautiful eyes! xo So glad I found your channel. The deli scene from "When Harry Met Sally" should have earned her an Oscar all by itself. Personal note ... I'm from Baltimore and was serving in the US Navy as a journalist when they were making "Sleepless In Seattle" and one of my fellow sailors interviewed Nora Ephron while they were shooting the scenes in Seattle and I saw how they shot the scene of the boat "sailing" across the water while "Over The Rainbow" is playing.
As much as I absolutely love GHOST, I can’t really say Demi Moore gives an Oscar-worthy performance. She’s good, but is upstaged by most of the other characters.
I think Jennifer Lopez missed for Hustlers for two reasons: first, the role of Ramona was not out of her depths as an actress even though it was a good performance. The character is villainous but also glamorous, which is Jennifer Lopez in real life. Second, I think it’s her off screen personal life. The media’s obsession with her love life encumbers her fellow actors from taking her seriously. That’s not her fault necessarily but it’s clear that her fame takes precedence over her quality as an actor.
@@jonathanvelazquezph.d.2719I think people are fed up with celebrity culture and her music career has become infamous since her feud with Mariah Carey, but her acting career deserves to get recognized
Talking about single performance that should have been nominated is Drew Barrymore for Scream. She opened that movie with a bang! I know the Academy is not a fan of slasher film.. but no one can deny how deserving Drew was for her supporting performance from Scream! Hopefully Drew will come back like Jamie Lee Curtis and will make an award winning film because i think Drew Barrymore is well loved and a very talented actress.
It'll be interesting to see if she decides to take on 'serious' film roles as her role in Grey Gardens demonstrated she has more range than what we've seen. If she had been nominated for Scream, I think that would have aged incredibly well. It's one of the most memorable performances of that year, easily. I actually love when 'short' performances get recognised, for me they are well within scope of what the supporting category is there for - performances that are quality over quantity. Another great slasher performance of that period was Sarah Michelle Gellar in I Know What You Did Last Summer. I wish the film took a different turn, both her character and her performance were superior to anyone else in the film.
I was dating a guy who insisted we see HUSTLERS. I reluctantly accepted - yes I didn't want to see a movie about strippers. But I changed my mind when I saw the film! The entire cast was sooooooooo good!! I also agree with you about Tessa, Pam, and Rebecca.
Great list - many others to add: Rebecca DeMornay, Cristina Ricci, Mary Kay Place, Bridget Fonda, Parker Posey, Carrie Fisher, Drew Barrymore, Annabella Sciorra, Gong Li, Madeline Stowe, Andie MacDowell, Rosanna Arquette, Sarah Polley, Stockard Channing, Jacqueline Bisset, Amy Irving
What’s weird is that Woody Allen’s films have gotten so many nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress but Mia Farrow has never been recognized for her work in any of Allen’s films.
Her performances in Allen's Purple Rose of Cairo and Broadway Danny Rose should both have been nominated. Terrific work and completely different characters.
Mia Farrow should have been nominated for "Broadway Danny Rose", "The Purple Rose of Cairo" and probably "Alice". I think she got Golden Globes noms for those three.
Thanks for mentioning Catherine OHara - I thought she tore it up in For Your Consideration especially. Nevertheless, at least she was finally recognized at the Emmys for her iconic performance as Moira Rose.😊
Great list! I agree with all of your choices. Jennifer Lopez is such an underrated actress. Besides Selena, Out of Sight and Hustlers she was fantastic in The Cell (2000), Angel Eyes (2001), An Unfinished Life (2005), Bordertown (2007). I'd mention Gillian Anderson, Ashley Judd and Sophie Marceau too. I even think MADONNA showed phenomenal Oscar-worthy acting in Dangerous Game (1993) & Evita (1996) despite not being a good actress overall
Mia Wasikowska? I know she is still young, but she's insanely talented and underrated. And, like Rebecca Hall, most of her work is in independent films (with the exception of ‘Crimson peak’ and the ‘Alice in wonderland’ movies, the latter of which is clearly not Oscar caliber😂)
i agree about rene russo..if she had been around in the 50s, 60s, 70s..she would have AT LEAST one academy award win..like faye dunaway before her, she commands the screen..great call...
I think Kerry Washington has the Myrna Loy effect when it comes to her films, she is usually associated as someone's wife and the character is not given much to branch
Zoe Saldana is one of my favorite actresses and I think her talent is underrated (I know her commercial success is untouched). I’m not sure she’s had many shots at this kind of award, though I do think like Andy Serkis, she could’ve been nominated for Avatar - one of my favorite performances ever. I know she’s getting buzz this year for Emilia Perez but I think her nomination is coming ❤
cameron diaz not ever being nominated is a fucking war crime. she is such an iconic talent who has delivered so many brilliant, memorable performances in her career, "the mask" (1994), "there's something about mary" (1998), "being john malkovich" (1999), "any given sunday" (1999), "vanilla sky" (2001), "gangs of new york" (2002), "in her shoes" (2005), "the holiday" (2006), and "my sister's keeper" (2009). with her coming back from retirement, i cannot wait to see what she does next and hopefully to see her one day on the stage at the dolby theatre picking up her first oscar (or even just nominated).
She's probably the #1 for me - when Vanilla Sky came out I hadn't yet seen her in anything dramatic (I hadn't seen Malkovich, but did eventually) and I was like... where did this come from?? But the movie was received very strangely, which I think is why she missed. I don't think people knew what to do with Being John Malkovich either, though it was highly acclaimed.
The fact that she was in "Gangs of New York" is one of the main problems in her career. She was NOT good in it at all. And I think, sadly, it really hurt her career as a serious Oscar material actress.
Great list! I was thrilled when I saw your number 1 choice was Rebecca Hall. I am hoping for an Oscar nomination for Elizabeth Moss. I know she has done alot of Television work, but I think that the right film role could net her that Oscar nomination.
@@kellicoffman8440 unfortunately its a little boring. Was a huge hit. But Oscar worthy. Sorry, not. Maybe today, could be possible. Because there are few blockbusters dramedy. But in the early 90s was common to have this kind of films succesful at box office
Jane Horrocks, for Little Voice! She got in at Golden Globes, SAG and BAFTA. She sings, she dances, she’s funny, she’s dramatic, this movie was definitely loved and watched this year, the snub is astonishing. This would have been an Absolutely Fabulous, Oscar nomination.
The snub isn't so bothersome considering the stellar best actress lineup that year. Fernanda Montenegro was probably the one who took her spot and she was truly deserving. Little Voice only got that one nomination for Brenda Blethyn.
Cameron Diaz in Vanilla Sky still haunts me to this day. It reminded me of how, Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction was charming, cunning, desperate, and deviant with her character. Bravo for putting her on your list! 👏❤
The one actress that would have been on my list is Jacqueline Bisset. The closest she’s gotten is a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for Dancing on the Edge.’ In the last couple of years she’s won a number of film festival awards for ‘Loren and Rose,’ but she has been in so many that deserved at least a nomination, including ‘Under the Volcano’ (1985, directed by John Huston and opposite Albert Finney; was nominated at the Golden Globes), The Sleepy Time Gal’ (2003, got a Clotrudis Award nomination for Best Actress) or her work in ‘Death in Love’ (2008, won at Boston Film Festival for Best Actress). Like Rebecca Hall, she appears in a number of indies so I kinda understand why she hasn’t been nominated, but even when it’s a more promoted, awards-worthy film like ‘Under the Volcano,’ only the Golden Globes noticed. Then again, it was also the Golden Globes that awarded the correct Best Actress in 1974 (Gena Rowlands for ‘A Woman Under the Influence’)-sorry, just had to get that in there…😄
Unfortunately Bisset work is more on TV and European Cinema than in Hollywood films. Maybe one day she could have a Charlotte Rampling role. But Bissett, Sonia Braga and Geraldine Chaplin, hadnt received great roles in Hollywood Films (not TV) in the past 30 years!!!
What about Diana Scarwid. She was brilliant in Mommie Dearest. When she screams in agony, “I am not one of your fans!”, I literally felt goosebumps running up and down my spine. Shudder.
Marilyn Monroe for "Bus Stop". Her omission from the Oscars that year for either actress or supporting actress is one of the acting community's biggest blunders and a very narrow minded omission. Her role in "Some Like It Hot" and "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" should have, at the very least, been up for consideration. She was, among other things, a great comedic actress. And then there was "The Misfits". She held her own in that movie.
Here! Here! MM's performance in Bus Stop is still modern, fresh and she brings such depth to what could have been a very shallow role - ahead of her time in so many ways!
Performances from actresses without noms that i think were worthy: - Beatrice Dalle, Betty Blue - Thandiwe Newton, Beloved - Sheryl Lee, Twin Peaks - Laura Harring, Mullholland Drive ( side note: I’d have Naomi Watts nominated too as I can’t believe she wasn’t ) - Mia Goth, Pearl - Diana Rigg, Last Night in Soho ( such a small role but she was incredible and I think she could’ve snuck in for supporting actress ) - Zhang Ziyi, Memoirs of a Geisha - Olivia Hussey, Romeo and Juliet - Mia Farrow, Death on the Nile ( not mentioned in this video as a performance ) - Jodie Comer, The last Duel - Bryce Dallas Howard, The Help ( sadly outshined by some other amazing supporting performances by Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain as well as Sissy Spacek but nonetheless gives an amazing performance ) - Bridget Fonda, Jackie Brown ( plays the supporting annoying role so well ), also could argue a case for Single White Female - Rachel Roberts, Murder on the Orient Express ( Such a fabulous performance and works so well with Wendy Hiller’s Princess Dragomiroff, I wish all the ladies in the 1974 adaptation could’ve been recognised as quite frankly every single one, from Redgrave to Bacall, was Incredible. ) - Lea Seydoux, Blue is the Warmest colour - Adele Exarchopoulos, Blue is the Warmest colour ( Blows my mind that these two weren’t nominated, their acting is incredible and some of the most raw of the year. ) - Judy Parfitt, Dolores Claiborne ( absolutely gut wrenching performance alongside the legend Kathy Bates, who should’ve also got a nod for Best Actress ) - Romola Garai, Atonement ( honestly such an underrated actress )
Thank you SO much for touching on Pam in Jackie Brown that is one of the best performances ever and for whatever stupid reason, I thought she was nominated(when I was younger before doing research) but it was the Globe she was nominated for and Forster was nominated for the Oscar. I didn’t find out she was snubbed until I watched the DVD special features and Tarantino said he wanted her to be the first black woman to win best actress and how disappointed he was that she wasn’t nominated.
THANK YOU for mentioning Rebecca Hall in both Resurrection and The Night House. It's a bummer that she's been overlooked in a lot of those movies. Like, especially Resurrection, if that had been noticed a bit more, she could've gotten into SOMETHING for that! That was a revolutionary performance that I wish more people knew about. I even read interviews from the director of that film, and he said Hall was by FAR the most prepared person of anyone on set each day they filmed. That alone should tell you how dedicated she is to her craft. Hopefully she does get in for something in the future.
Excellent list, Brian. Jennifer Lopez deserved nods for Selena & Hustlers, Cameron Diaz deserved noms for Being John Malkovich, and I would have loved Mia Farrow to have earned an Oscar nomination for Rosemary's Baby (with Globe & BAFTA noms I still believe she was in 6th place with Patricia Neal beating her out with The Subject Was Roses). Pam Grier deserved an Oscar nomination for Jackie Brown. I do hope Demi Moore can do well this awards season for The Substance and I agree that Meg Ryan making it in for When Harry Met Sally would have aged very well. Great list.
Funny how Jennifer Lopez had quite a handful of reputable film performances before focusing on her music career (Selena, Money Train, U-Turn, Blood And Wine, Out Of Sight, worked with Coppola in Jack) but ever since she only had a remarkable film and/or performance here and there: The Cell, The Wedding Planner, Maid In Manhattan, Shall We Dance, Hustlers. (I guess she was ok in Enough and Monster In Law, too.)
Just to add: Thandiwe Newton was amazing in Beloved in the 90s based on Toni Morrison’s novel, I think that was definitely her best work and deserved an oscar nod.
Ellen Barkin and Andie McDowell are also famously not nominated for Oscars I really think Isabella Rossellini is win-competitive for Conclave this year. She has the narrative and the respected reputation in the industry, and all she needs is a good role and the movie to be good.
I would include Jennifer Aniston in this. She had two roles in particular that got her on the cusp. She was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for The Good Girl (best actress) and she got Golden Globe AND SAG noms for Cake (best actress). Along with being an Emmy winner and multiple nominee for her TV work, she's had a great movie presence too! She's a comedic genius in Horrible Bosses and We're The Millers. Outside of that, I love this list! Especially the Meg Ryan appreciation! So underrated for her dramatic roles as well!
Loved those choices, especially Rebecca Hall. Hard to believe she started out as a child actor in The Chamomile Lawn in the early 90s. And she’s really good in that!
Rebecca Hall in "Resurrection" was unforgettable... unfortunately that film was super divisive and strange, but holy crap, that performance is an all-timer. I'm so happy you brought her up Brian!
Julie Christie had the best performance of 1997. Just because Afterglow was sadly forgotten, doesn't mean she doesn't deserves the nom. I could replace Hunt, Winslet and even Dench for Grier
She’s my ultimate pick that year as well, and the movie actually suffers from bad reputation for being misty-foggy piece of dull, when in reality, upon a proper rewatch, it’s nothing like that and her character has the most mystique aura and presence. I’d rather replace Dench, HBC and Winslet for Grier’s iconic nomination, but not Hunt (I grew up on her decently) and specially not Christie.
Goodness, I know everyone is entitled to their opinion but to say that you’d take out Dench for Helen Hunt’s completely uninspired and forgettable performance just doesn’t make sense to me at all
• Rene Russo should've absolutely gotten in. Her or Chastain in A Most Violent Year should've gotten that fifth slot. Laura Dern in Wild was soo random and unnecessary. But they didn't even nominate Jake! So clearly they had reservations with Nightcrawler... • Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze didn't get the respect they deserved for Ghost! The Substance is absolutely bonnkers and not at all what they typically go for, but depending how the awards season goes, if a nice career honors narrative forms and the film is recognized consistently, it isn't out the realm of possibility. • I thought Jennifer Lopez should've WON for Hustlers. The fact that she missed, and for a mid Kathy Bates performances in a mid Clint Eastwood movie... It really does piss me off. They looked down upon Hustlers for the content even though it was, in my opinion, one of the best films of 2019. • I'm happy Toni Collette got that Oscar nod in 99, but the fact that Cameron Diaz was sixth place TWICE, for Being John Malkovich AND Vanilla Sky... It's truly devastating, lol. • Tessa Thompson will get nominated soon. • Pam Grier being snubbed for Jackie Brown is one of my all-time most hurtful snubs. Such a great film and performance--and it would've been the perfect way to honor her entire career. • Mia Farrow could've gotten in so many times, but Rosemary's Baby is the one she absolutely should've gotten, especially considering Ruth Gordon's win for that film.
I like Catherine O'Hara, but I can understand why FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION was completely shut out at the Oscars. It's a very bitter, cruel movie that shows a lot of disdain for Hollywood and for the Oscar campaigning process itself.
Poor Rebecca Hall. She was the co-lead of Vicky Cristina Barcelona-the titular Vicky, the Woody Allen surrogate-and she went unpictured and fourth billed on the poster. Smdh.
This person’s career is technically just starting out, but one person I’d love to shout out is Ella Purnell. She hasn’t had too many film performances as of late, and she mostly does TV shows like FALLOUT, ARCANE, and YellowJackets. That said, she’s easily one of the standouts in all of those shows. It was a shock she was snubbed at the Emmys for FALLOUT, and the trailer for her upcoming show SweetPea shows even more of her range. I think, if she lands the right role with the right director, Purnell could very easily make it into the Oscars one year.
What's doubly weird about Farrow never being nominated is that she had a decade plus artistic partnership with Woody Allen, a writer/director who has delivered so many nominations and wins to the women in his movies. She's consistently great in all of their work together and yet somehow she's the one who is always left behind.
@@craigjohnson6423 i guess she was never liked by the Academy. Not only but also not all her Woody Allen films critics were delighted by her performance. Golden Globes in the other hand loves nepobabies. So thats why she received several golden globes noms. Despite for being several times in top 10 best performance by a lesding actress. Only in Rosemary Baby and The Purple Rose of El Cairo was between 6/7
Mia Farrow gives one of my favourite performances on film in Death on the Nile from 1978. She absolutely electrifies the screen in every shot she's in of that film. Greta Lee should have been nominated for Past Lives and Janelle Monáe for Glass Onion last year and the year before respectively. Kim Novak and Tippi Hedren could have been nominated for their respective Hitchcock films and there is an alternate universe where Madonna got her Evita nomination! Eva Green is one of the finest actresses of the last twenty years and I'd love to see Lily James net a nomination one of these days.
Fun, well-thought out list! I especially agree about Russo in Night Crawler. Sorry, Meryl, you may have been one of the few highlights of the dreadful Into the Woods, but it wasn't Oscar worthy that year. And, of course, Pam Grier. Both she and Jackson deserved nominations for Jackie Brown. I haven't seen Hustlers or Passing. Going to have to check them both out. Thanks!
Here’s an idea- talk about the Least popular acting nominations of each decade 30s- Gladys George Valiant is the word for Carrie 40s- Dan Dailey when my baby smiles at me 50s- Mickey Rooney the bold and the brave 60s- Nick adams twilight of honor 70s- Glenda Jackson Hedda 80s- Norma Aleandro Gaby a true story 90s- Miranda Richardson and rosemary Harris Tom and viv 00s- Annette benning being julia 10s- Demian bichir a better life
I love Richardson and Harris in Tom and Viv. Both deserved more the Oscar than the winners. They are my winners I also like Aleandro. Ok was more an achievement award. But there were much worse nomination and wins from that decafe
Let's hope that Ralph Fiennes is finally given his much deserved and late Academy Award and at least Rossellini gets nominated. I am crossing my fingers 🤞🏻
Thandiwe Newton should have been nominated for Besieged (1998); I would also include these actresses: Maggie Cheung : 'In the Mood for Love' (2000); 'Center Stage' (1991); 'Clean' (2004); 'Comrades: Almost a Love Story' (1996) '2046' (2004); Kate Beckinsale: 'Love & Friendship' (2016); Alison Elliott: 'The Spitfire Grill' (1996) 'The Wings of the Dove' (1997); Gong Li: 'Raise the Red Lantern' (1991); 'Memoirs of a Geisha'(2005); 'Farewell My Concubine' (1993); 'Coming Home' (2014); 'To Live' (1994); 'The Story of Qiu Ju' (1992) 'Ju Dou' (1990); Audrey Tautou: 'Amélie' (2001); 'A Very Long Engagement' (2004); CCH Pounder: Out of Rosenheim/Bagdad Café (1987); Judy Parfitt: 'Dolores Claiborne' (1995); Marília Pêra: 'Pixote' (1980); 'Central Station' (1998); Franka Potente: 'Run Lola Run' (1998); Christina Ricci: 'Addams Family Values' (1993); Mia Goth: 'Pearl' (2022); Rebecca Romijn: 'Femme Fatale' (2002); Kathy Baker: 'Edward Scissorhands' (1990); Zhang Ziyi: 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' (2000); 'House of Flying Daggers' (2004); 'Memoirs of a Geisha' (2005 ); '2046' (2004); Hayley Mills: 'Tiger Bay' (1959); 'The Parent Trap' (1961); 'The Family Way' (1966); 'Twisted Nerve' (1968); Eileen Atkins for everything she does
Great list. I mean is easier with actresses than actors. I don't think Demi Moore should be in top 10, but definitive in top 25, maybe top 20. I think O Hará should replace. Also Pam Grier in Jackie Brown is one of the best performance of the 90s. But this is for actressew with more than 1 movie performance, the same of Tessa Thompson. Maybe not are in top 10, but definitive are in top 30 (Thandie Newton deserved more than Thompson place. I also think that Zhang Ziyi deserves to be at least in honorable mention. Other actresses that werent surprise Oscar nominated are Kelly MacDonald, Anna Taylor Joy and Rose Byrne, and veteran Margo Martindale

I would add Tuesday Weld to that list. While she didn’t appear in a huge number of movies, when she did, she gave it her all.
@@willnoiles2001 Unlike the other examples above, Weld did have one Oscar nomination under her belt, when she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her work in Looking for Mr. Goodbar.
@@willnoiles2001Tuesday Weld got an Oscar nomination for Looking for Mr. Goodbar
@@willnoiles2001 she was really good but she did get a nomination for Looking for Mr. Goodbard
Bryce dallas
All the ladies from the help have gotten oscar wins or nominations, except bryce dallas howard
She deserved a nom
I’m surprised she didn’t get nominated. I truly hated her character.
Justice for Ashley Judd! 😊
Bug should’ve been her chance. She would’ve been very much in a serious conversation nowadays, alas the movie went nowhere in those days
As much as I absolutely love GHOST, I can’t really say Demi Moore gives an Oscar-worthy performance. She’s good, but is upstaged by most of the other characters.
She was more deserving for A Few Good Men at BSA.
True, she is currently suffering a great dip in her popularity. It seems people don't like her persona.
Yes yes yes! I was so glad when Polley won for screenplay a few years ago 🎉
Stockard Channing and Amy Irving were both nominated. Stockard for Six Degrees of Separation and Amy for Yentl.
@@navidhudson7065 yes you are correct - my mistake
I adore Rebecca Hall. Solid #1 choice
What’s weird is that Woody Allen’s films have gotten so many nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress but Mia Farrow has never been recognized for her work in any of Allen’s films.
Such a shame. She should've WON for The Purple Rose of Cairo.
I saw that movie yesterday and I was sure that was Mia's only nomination but I found out that she had never been nominated.@@mr29
Could this be a matter of voters liking the performance but not much liking the performer? Mia Farrow isn't the most popular person in the business.
Gina Gershon, Ashley Judd, and Bridget Fonda are a few who come to mind…
Catherine O'Hara: The older I get, the more I wish Home Alone had some oscar nominations. That movie was such a game changer.
Thanks for another excellent segment, Brian. I also liked Rebecca in "The Gift," one of my favorite movies of all time.
CHRISTINE BARANSKI NEEDS TO BE ON THIS LIST
Mia Wasikowska? I know she is still young, but she's insanely talented and underrated. And, like Rebecca Hall, most of her work is in independent films (with the exception of ‘Crimson peak’ and the ‘Alice in wonderland’ movies, the latter of which is clearly not Oscar caliber😂)
Finally you included Diaz too!
She deserves much more recognition than she ever received......
i agree about rene russo..if she had been around in the 50s, 60s, 70s..she would have AT LEAST one academy award win..like faye dunaway before her, she commands the screen..great call...
I love her in Get Shorty!
I think Kerry Washington has the Myrna Loy effect when it comes to her films, she is usually associated as someone's wife and the character is not given much to branch
100% agree with you about Rene Russo, especially Nightcrawler and Get Shorty
Zoe Saldana is one of my favorite actresses and I think her talent is underrated (I know her commercial success is untouched). I’m not sure she’s had many shots at this kind of award, though I do think like Andy Serkis, she could’ve been nominated for Avatar - one of my favorite performances ever. I know she’s getting buzz this year for Emilia Perez but I think her nomination is coming ❤
The irony of Lopez not being respected for a “stripper movie” but Mikey Madison getting critical acclaim for Anora
cameron diaz not ever being nominated is a fucking war crime. she is such an iconic talent who has delivered so many brilliant, memorable performances in her career, "the mask" (1994), "there's something about mary" (1998), "being john malkovich" (1999), "any given sunday" (1999), "vanilla sky" (2001), "gangs of new york" (2002), "in her shoes" (2005), "the holiday" (2006), and "my sister's keeper" (2009). with her coming back from retirement, i cannot wait to see what she does next and hopefully to see her one day on the stage at the dolby theatre picking up her first oscar (or even just nominated).
Cameron Diaz was phenomenal in "Things you can tell just by looking at her".
I feel like once she is nominated or even in the winning conversation. She will steamroll the entire season.
@luizsmello it should have been her spot instead of Queen Latifah
Great list! I was thrilled when I saw your number 1 choice was Rebecca Hall. I am hoping for an Oscar nomination for Elizabeth Moss. I know she has done alot of Television work, but I think that the right film role could net her that Oscar nomination.
i totally agree with you Brian, for Rebecca Hall she deserves recognition... be patient it's coming soon !!!😍😍😍
Crying shame Meg didn’t get nominated for when a man 👨 loves a woman.Best work she ever did.
Stupid title
@@heaintloveu true great movie 🍿 should have had a better title
@@heaintloveuAgreed. Naming a movie after a popular old song isn't always a good idea.
@@kellicoffman8440 unfortunately its a little boring. Was a huge hit. But Oscar worthy. Sorry, not.
Maybe today, could be possible. Because there are few blockbusters dramedy.
But in the early 90s was common to have this kind of films succesful at box office
I've never been that impressed by the acting of Demi Moore or Jennifer Lopez.
JLo def deserved a nom for hustlers .. also el cantante
I really enjoyed this video, thank you.
Eva green.
Shes so good. Deserves more recognition
Great pun! "Bubble" nominated for an Academy Award. I'd like to live in that parallel universe.
The snub isn't so bothersome considering the stellar best actress lineup that year. Fernanda Montenegro was probably the one who took her spot and she was truly deserving. Little Voice only got that one nomination for Brenda Blethyn.
Oh HELL YES to your top choice!!
Performances from actresses without noms that i think were worthy:
- Beatrice Dalle, Betty Blue
- Thandiwe Newton, Beloved
- Sheryl Lee, Twin Peaks
- Laura Harring, Mullholland Drive ( side note: I’d have Naomi Watts nominated too as I can’t believe she wasn’t )
- Mia Goth, Pearl
- Diana Rigg, Last Night in Soho ( such a small role but she was incredible and I think she could’ve snuck in for supporting actress )
- Zhang Ziyi, Memoirs of a Geisha
- Olivia Hussey, Romeo and Juliet
- Mia Farrow, Death on the Nile ( not mentioned in this video as a performance )
- Jodie Comer, The last Duel
- Bryce Dallas Howard, The Help ( sadly outshined by some other amazing supporting performances by Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain as well as Sissy Spacek but nonetheless gives an amazing performance )
- Bridget Fonda, Jackie Brown ( plays the supporting annoying role so well ), also could argue a case for Single White Female
- Rachel Roberts, Murder on the Orient Express ( Such a fabulous performance and works so well with Wendy Hiller’s Princess Dragomiroff, I wish all the ladies in the 1974 adaptation could’ve been recognised as quite frankly every single one, from Redgrave to Bacall, was Incredible. )
- Lea Seydoux, Blue is the Warmest colour
- Adele Exarchopoulos, Blue is the Warmest colour
( Blows my mind that these two weren’t nominated, their acting is incredible and some of the most raw of the year. )
- Judy Parfitt, Dolores Claiborne ( absolutely gut wrenching performance alongside the legend Kathy Bates, who should’ve also got a nod for Best Actress )
- Romola Garai, Atonement ( honestly such an underrated actress )
Great video as usual. If you were just counting acting, Sarah polley should have at least been considered for honorable mention
Thandi Newton killed it in Beloved. I agree about Meg Ryan. I have never heard of Rebecca Hall, sadly.
Rebecca Hall !!!!!!!!! I could not agree more with you. Terrific whistle blown for all with eyes to pay attention to her talent and perseverance.
Such a great video 👏🏼
Great list.
When it comes to Claire Danes, my favorite performance of hers is from Steve Martin’s novella Shopgirl. She’s incredible in it, as is Steve Martin.
Robin Wright ! Forrest Gump amazing, I liked her 2049 Blade Runner as well.
Just to add: Thandiwe Newton was amazing in Beloved in the 90s based on Toni Morrison’s novel, I think that was definitely her best work and deserved an oscar nod.
Ellen Barkin and Andie McDowell are also famously not nominated for Oscars
I really think Isabella Rossellini is win-competitive for Conclave this year. She has the narrative and the respected reputation in the industry, and all she needs is a good role and the movie to be good.
Brian, you should be a consultant for the Academy Awards. I so agree with C. O'Hara and Rebecca Hall. She was amazing in Christine.
As usual, you are the best!!!!
Loved those choices, especially Rebecca Hall. Hard to believe she started out as a child actor in The Chamomile Lawn in the early 90s. And she’s really good in that!
Rebecca Hall was also great in The Gift with Jason Bateman and Joel Edgerton.
Rebecca Hall in "Resurrection" was unforgettable... unfortunately that film was super divisive and strange, but holy crap, that performance is an all-timer. I'm so happy you brought her up Brian!
Thank you for every video!!!
your pam grier take is 100
Great list! Not a Meg Ryan fan though.
Marilyn Monroe .She should have won an Oscar for "Some like it hot".
He's only including living actors
That Rebecca Hall Golden Globe nomination for Vicky Cristina Barcelona is one of my favorites ❤❤❤❤
Only in Rosemary Baby and The Purple Rose of El Cairo was between 6/7
I loved Mia Farrow in Purple Rose if Cairo.
Can they please start rewarding more comedies and genre films? Too many good performances are getting overlooked.
Demi in GI Jane. That should have been put up for an Oscar. ❤
Krysten ritter
Always playing the best friend to the main character.
She deserves recognition
She blew me away in breaking bad.
Thanks!
Rebecca Hall. Yes.
Uma Thurman in nymphomanic, what an incredible performance!
Thanks for JLO. Most people don't give her credit
Here’s an idea- talk about the Least popular acting nominations of each decade
30s- Gladys George Valiant is the word for Carrie
40s- Dan Dailey when my baby smiles at me
50s- Mickey Rooney the bold and the brave
60s- Nick adams twilight of honor
70s- Glenda Jackson Hedda
80s- Norma Aleandro Gaby a true story
90s- Miranda Richardson and rosemary Harris Tom and viv

10s- Demian bichir a better life
I love Richardson and Harris in Tom and Viv. Both deserved more the Oscar than the winners. They are my winners
I also like Aleandro. Ok was more an achievement award. But there were much worse nomination and wins from that decafe
Mia Farrow should have been nominated also for "Broadway Danny Rose". It is probably one of the best comedic film performances of all time.
Let's hope that Ralph Fiennes is finally given his much deserved and late Academy Award and at least Rossellini gets nominated. I am crossing my fingers 🤞🏻

What do you think about Gillian Anderson?
Gillian Anderson is phenomenal, but to my knowledge, all her best performances are in tv series.
Mia Farrow gives a third nomination worthy performance in Woody Allen’s Broadway Danny Rose.
Do Directors Never Nominated
