A ridiculously orthodox keeper. Every keeper before that who was "great" achieved it by being a bit erratic, a bit eccentric. Seaman was just ridiculously consistent but still had all the top drawer athleticism to pull off big saves. His willingness to use his body and feet to save shots, particularly up close in one on ones, really made a difference.
His only unorthodox move was to be slightly off his line at the time opting to be a bit further up than some other keepers of his era, I always had confidence with him between the sticks

If your keeper isn't willing or able to come and sweep up then they just end up backpedalling. He wasn't quite sweeper keeper, but was definitely more willing to come to the edge of his area to touch the ball on or claim it.
It's an insane save. The fact that he got enough power behind the ball with his hand to keep it out and actually get it away from the Sheffield player. And he was 39, only a few months from turning 40.

Banks England v Brazil. Seaman Arsenal v Sheffield Udt. 2 of the best saves ever. I watch them over and over and just don't understand how both these keepers saved those shots.
When he was signed for 1.2 million in 1990 replacing the popular John Lukic he had a lot to prove to disgruntled Arsenal fans. Prove it he certainly did making the number 1 Jersey his own in his 13 years. He won four Fa cups, 3 league titles and a cup winners cup medal during his career. He was the greatest Arsenal keeper ever IMHO.
Still don’t understand how he kept that header out against Sheffield Utd. The reach, reactions and somehow still getting the strength to claw it out. Unreal…
I'm brasilian and can safely say that david seaman is one of the greatest keepers of football history, alongside dida, yashin, zoff, buffon, kahn and so on. But that is not all. He also is the keeper with perhaps the most iconic save ever, I can't decide between his save and banks' miracle against pele in mexico 70. Edit: technically higuita's scorpion kick was not an actual save because the play was stopped, but I guess that moment could join the podium. Seaman, banks and higuita, in no particular order.
U r forgetting keepers like Peter schmeichel who was better than seaman no mater how you look at it. Than keepers like casillas, kahn and plenty others. Seaman was indeed the last world class english keeper but italy always had keepers that were equal or better than seaman in the past 30 years. A few italian keepers who were better than seaman are: Francesco Toldo Angello Peruzzi Gianluca Pagliuca Gianluigi Buffon Walter Zenga

Quite interesting because I usually saw a top goalkeeper used at most 3 brands for their whole career...
Who was better : him or Chris Woods ? I like both of them. Honestly, after the 1st time I saw Woods played at Norwich City in around 1984, I found a new favorite GK : he was strong, good shot stopper and had good goal kick. But as Bobby Robson kept putting him at the bench for ageing Peter Shilton, even at WC 90, I never saw him play at major tournament. And then came the emerging David Seaman whom also impressed me; I watched him play at Euro 96 live on TV in the match vs Spain on which he became the hero for England, and became my new favorite GK. I had to forget Chris Woods because of him. However, now I remember him again and watch highlights of his saves as well as goal kick.

Seaman, 39 at the time, had a great tournament overall, best keeper after Kahn and Rustu. That was a lucky freak goal and Ronaldinho was a magician, doesn't mean Seaman was not great. Afterall everybody makes mistakes, watch Kahn in the final of that same World Cup, he made a silly mistake.
