The arrival of both of these players at Old Trafford was marked with runaway success in the 90s and 2000s respectively.
The thing that most people will have Schmeichel over van der Sar is his vocality. Big Pete is very domineering and loud in your face unlike Edwin who is much more reserved. Reserved doesn’t mean you are not as good it only means you might not be that well noticed. IMO I think both of them are equally great, even David de Gea was a very good goalkeeper for Man Utd as well and it’s such a shame that he left the club in that manner after giving 12 years of service to them.

Van der Sar saving the last penalty in the 08 ucl final was not only saving ronaldo's miss but he saved his reputation and had a redemption, winning his second champions league title. Buffon has not won and juve has not won a european title since 96.
Back then, with Serie A playing style in the league, it's almost impossible for Serie A team to win UCL. Just watch 2005's Milan vs Juve video. If VAR existed back then, that match would end up with only half of the players remaining on the pitch. With the amount Gattuso brutal clashes and double feet tackles on that match, he didn't even get a single yellow card.
I’m always telling people that Edwin Van der Sar is the best goalkeeper in the history of football. The way he was saving everything with ease, catching power shots and so on, on a complete class of his own. The way he kept Fulham in the Premier League all by himself, was astonishing
Exactly! He wasnt just better than Buffon, Cech, Casillas... He is the best ALL-TIME. He actually caught shots rather than twisting his body and pushing it out.

Back to that era when the only job of GK was shot stopping, Van Der Sar was already one of the best in receiving dangerous pass from teammates and ball handling, even better than most modern GK imo
He might not be the best in history, but he's still the GK that transmitted nothing but absolute chill to the team. Ever so calm, but always ready to make an instant reflex save that's just cat-like reaction. Probably the one in my all-time 11
Great video! But you missed some footage, like when you talk about his passing (his pass on bergkamp in euro 96 against Switzerland) Or his moment with Ortega in 98 ! Or were there copyright?? And I do believe he was a starter the moment he came in after that Auxerre game with that volleybal goal from Menzo. Also a great goalie btw! But great video man!
I remember van der Sar consecutively defending free kicks from Sinisa Mihajlovic, arguably the best free-kicker of all times, even better then Kaka or Roberto Carlos. He was one of the handful few that could defend them but the only one in the world that could do it on a regular basis. A beast.

Van der Sar, as far as I am concerned, is a god-tier goalie, right next to Buffon. You would absolutely want to have him in the goal, no matter who you are up against and whatever the circumstances are
Realising the he still was a monster at 35 until he retired has literally given some new spark in me. I'm 34 and still play for my local club, seeing what he accomplished in his later 30s tells me, if he can keep improving, so can i
I remembered his name in the mid 90’s and would regularly put him and all the young footballers back then into my ‘dream team’ in Winning Eleven. Van Der Sar was already making a name for himself as this video showed he was tall, young and was world class goalkeeper. Van Der Sar’s Ajax had all the best players who would become legends in Europe later on in their careers after winning the Dutch league such as Clarence Seedorf, Edgar Davids, Patrick Kluivert, Marc Overmars etc. Only thing I didn’t know that he joined Man Utd at 35 I thought he joined around his late 20’s
I think one of the more insane moments was seeing him on the pitch at his childhood club playing a match like it was nothing at 45. Of course the quality of that game wasn’t all too high, but damn, he seemed fit and focused as ever. And also, the amount of communication on the field coming from him was very great to hear up close. He was my childhood hero, what a goalie.
A lot of people here mentioning his ability to direct his defence. I think it might be the same thing that made him such a successful technical director at ajax after he retired from playing.
One of the greatests of all time. A man I looked up to my entire life (even literally as he is HUGE), but In my opinion one of the best goalkeepers ever.
I think all Dutch ppl at the end of his juve time and during his time at Fulham thought: why isn't he at one of the biggest clubs in the world. He was insane already at Ajax around 24. He was incredibly good, up there with the top 5 of all time.
Somewhat underrated, and only briefly mentioned, is that Van der Sar was, especially for the time he started playing, exceptionally good at coming out of his goal. He wouldn't just wait in the box (the zone around the goal the goalie can use their hands?) like many others, he'd go out there and kick away the ball when he judged it to be the better option. He could also play ball enough that defenders could reliably pass the ball back to him, confident he wouldn't make a blunder (or he'd be far enough off to the side that even the worst blunder would only result in a corner kick). He also had enough awareness of his team to make, as you do say, accurate passes towards the midfield or, in some cases, directly to attackers.
every dutchmen knows Van der Sar, if you're not a fan of Ajax, then for sure for his performance on the international stage, where he was just a beast and on his own kept us in the game so many times, when he did eventually retire we really felt it, since the less experienced GK took his place and goals started to go in way more often.
Vad Der Sar is probably my favorite GK of all time. He just always seemed laid back, regardless of the occasion. He was a modern type of GK who was comfortable in possession and distribution, but also good at the other stuff. Unlike many GKs of his era, VDS could easily be able to play within any current top team. I always had a sneak feeling (or hope) he would become Schmeichels eventual replacement.
I'm not a football guy at all, but when I was little I wanted a Van de Sar shirt because I thought he was such a badass. Standing alone in the goal stopping EVERYTHING.
Very surprised to hear that Van der Sar was forgotten this much, he is seen as the best goalkeeper we ever had in the Netherlands (next to Van Breukelen)
Most underrated goalkeeper ever. Don't understand why he is never mentioned in the goat debate when it comes to goalkeepers. He was just as good as guys like Buffon and Casillas and played untill he was 40.
My little brother is a goalkeeper and he used to play for Ajax and he won the van der Sar best youth goalkeeper price. Sadly after that the injuries got him.😔

He was the best to watch. Complete panic around him and him cool as a Cucumber
every dutchmen knows Van der Sar, if you're not a fan of Ajax, then for sure for his performance on the international stage, where he was just a beast and on his own kept us in the game so many times, when he did eventually retire we really felt it, since the less experienced GK took his place and goals started to go in way more often.
"Flappie" was an incredibly great goalkeeper, an Ajax and Orange legend.
An ingenuity signing among others by Sir AG.
He was a hero for me as a kid being a united fan who played in goal
I'm not a football guy at all, but when I was little I wanted a Van de Sar shirt because I thought he was such a badass. Standing alone in the goal stopping EVERYTHING.
Great video as always 👍 would also like to see a video about Rivaldo, he was a great, great player.
Truely love the guy, have many nail bitting moments did he save, uau World class
Thank you for this video. To me he was and is the best goalkeeper ever. I have no doubt about that.
Edwin Van der Sar also a very nice and friendly guy , met him ones and he was just a very nice person.
I grew up with van der Sar being old but still playing professional, he's always had unanimous Respect from everyone.
van Der Sar was the prototype for the modern day ballplaying goalkeeper.
Neuer was that, not VDS.
@@joecrypto2459 Neuer came AFTER VdS, you understand what a prototype is?
One of the few examples of "don't give up even if you're getting older, who knows if tomorrow will be your peak day"
Yuh the VVan-der Sar's prime-was kinda crazy good
Peter Schmeichel was also campaigning to Sir Alex to sign van der Sar.
Edwin van de Sar is legend never will he go old ❤
Van Der Sar, the best goalkeeper ever!
edwin was my childhood hero. easily the best in the world at the time, and only got better as he got older.
Very surprised to hear that Van der Sar was forgotten this much, he is seen as the best goalkeeper we ever had in the Netherlands (next to Van Breukelen)
Edwin van der Sar was so damn good. I really love his time in Manchester United
Sadly after that the injuries got him.😔
can you make a video about jairzinho, he’s goated and very underrated
Edwin Van Der Sar was one of the best 5 keepers of the 00s ... Maybe top 3 depending how you stack them.
Still my best GK ever. Him, Vidic & Rio were monsters at the back.
Do a keylor navas, no trophies at age 27, now over 20 trophys and a spot as one off the all time greats at the champions league.
Guy was a monster. Didn't matter what happened you never felt they were going to score. Every shot was almost like. "Eh Edwin is gonna save it anyway"
Loved watching Van der Sar
As a newcomer, I need in depth stories like this. I want to know about the battles, seasons, players. Gimme a title I can search for describing this to maybe?
Finally someone puts some respect on his name! One of the most underrated goalkeepers!
Super underrated
Back then Casillas and Buffon were the top two goats, but you always had to give Cech and Van der Sar their props.
Great goalkeeper. He dominated all registers
