Galena, hometown of President U.S.GRANT, lots of curves in town, thats what all the flange noise is from, and its my son-in-laws railroad stomping ground! Love the new intro, it would be much better with the bell ringing as the semaphore goes from red to green!👍👍😀😀😃😃❗
Interesting history Paul! Grant probably rode trains through there. Definitely slow going with all the curves. I plan on working the bell in with the semaphore soon😃👍
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 i dont know much about the history of the Illinois Central in Grants area, as he was a general in the civil war before he became president. When Lincoln was assasinated in 1865, Andrew Johnson was his vice president, and he became president after Lincoln. When Johnsons term was over, General Grant became president, and he also had a large farm in the St. Louis Missouri area, which is now home to the Budwieser beer Clydesdale horses. You may have briefly touched on the history of the I.C. line during the video of the swing bridge/curved tunnel, but i cant remember the years that you mentioned. When my kids were young, we visited Grants farm, and those Clydesdale horses are huge, i would need a ladder to get on one, thats for darn sure! Have a safe holiday season, and i am looking forward to the intro with the bell and semaphore both operating 👍👍👍👍😀😃😀😃❗
@@paulsmith5398 I remember the Budweiser commercials from years ago around Christmas time. They had the Clydesdales pulling the wagon of beer. Great commercial. Have a great Christmas 👍
That was one long mixed manifest! It was cool to see some vintage box cars still rolling. I appreciate the shout out on the hazmat card! I pray 🙏 you and your family have a blessed and safe Christmas, Red. Thank you for the video today. It was excellent! 😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤
Good shots in Galena Red. That curve off the end of the bridge is 11.5 degree and is the tightest on the Iowa Division. They used to have "greasers" on it but am not sure now. Also the bridge used to be a jack-knife span until taken out during a derailment in the late 1970's. The Galena River was considered navigable but the movable span was never opened for river traffic after construction.
Thanks Fred! They most likely have a greaser still on that curve. That train took forever to get through there. The Galena river looked pretty good compared to our drought stricken rivers here in Iowa!
Hello Red, a very nice beginning of the video, with the semaphore signal. This is a fantastically long CN freight train, excellently filmed. Very nice, your two great dogs, I really like dogs and cats too. Thank you for the great video and wish you and your family a wonderful Christmas. Greetings from Germany. wolfgang
You're welcome Wolfgang! I ran through a whole drone battery with that train. The dogs are always up for a ride in the truck. Have a great Christmas over there!
I was the project coordinator on the new Galena wastewater treatment project. It was one of my favorite jobs. It looks like you were getting closer in the drone footage, but I'm not 100% sure it was west and south of town.
Merry Christmas Red! Thanks for another great year of train videos and the memories they bring of back "home" in Iowa. I hope Santa is good to you and yours!!
Your drone footage of Canadian National's train #M338 gave us a clever idea of the track configuration in Galena, Illinois. I was surprised to see how slowly the train traveled through Galena. I also noticed that there were no gates on the crossing to the east of the Galena train station. I presume there are not that many trains passing through Galena. The Canadian National train #L571 was short on 16 December 2023, It also had unusual foreign power on it in the form of a CSX engine. Roger seems to have grown bigger since the last time we saw him, or it just might be the angle of the camera that makes him look bigger.
Yes Thomas very curvy around Galena. Sounds like it's a 10mph speed limit on that curve after the bridge. I would guess 3 to 5 trains a day through there. Roger is definitely getting bigger. He's a eating machine!
Been through Galena numerous times but have never seen any railroad activity. Really enjoyed seeing the train move through town. Someday we’ll find out where that green car loads and unloads. Seems like you catch it about every week to two weeks. Roger is really growing, catching up with Walter!
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 I went on Google Maps Ariel and scouted the CN all the way to Sioux City checking all the tracks for anything that looked like the green car. Saw something that looked like it in the LeMars Industrial park but couldn’t tell for sure.
Was going to suggest on the tunnel video about making the little drive here, then saw you had a video for Galena. Usually can get the whole train at E. Dubuque and still beat them to Galena. I would love to explore their route between Galena and Scales Mound with all the hills, if I ever get a drone.
at Galena, I was looking around. I noticed all the architecture was different in all the houses and buildings. That is refreshing in a way. Dogs kind of ignored you, why? Seriuosly, all electronics go shut off this Holiday, so from one Red to another have a nice Christmas and a safe one.
Almost a carbon copy in terms of length and time going by like the train you caught in Dubuque. I remember writing Amtrak's Blackhawk RDC cars through here and how it was just one curve after another. The train also had quite a bit of either corn or soybeans in addition to distillers grain so the DPU was a necessity. Trusty L571 certainly was going to be dropping off enough ethanol cars to almost make up a train so some of that power will be left behind. Odd to see the four IC plain flat cars and did you notice the covered Hopper before the first one have the faces of two dogs kind of looking out for your traveling companions. True to form there was the green AEX car which is like a fixture. The Drone certainly helped to portray how rugged that area around Galena actually is and when you think about it how close it is to Wisconsin. Wishing you and your loved ones a blessed Christmas as well as our fellow viewers
Yes Paul that was a long one for sure! Had the same slow speed limit like the one in Dubuque too. Bet that RDC car went faster than the train through those curves! I replayed the video, one is definitely a dog. The other painting looked more like an alien. At least Walter can't trample Roger anymore, have a great Christmas!!
Good Day Buddy, That's a pretty little town that you were in that day. Love hearing that echo from that horn. Looks like a great little spot. I have an spur line where trains run late at night on it. It's parallel to a paved bike path. I've follow the CN540 along that bike path. "Drone Time!!!" Never gets old. What is that high pitched racket? Is it the wheels grinding again the rail (when the train goes around curves at slow speed) or something else? It doesn't always happen. The other common sounds that you hear from a train that's going slow (without the screaming racket), I could listen to that all day. Well Red, if you don't post anything until after Xmas, I would like to wish you and your loved ones A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS! CHEERS from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦🚂🧑🦽🚂
Yo Phantom! That was the wheel flanges on the curves making all that racket. Maybe need to grease the curves some more. Merry Christmas from The Tall Corn State!
Another great video Red, Man, you and your family have a merry Christmas and a happy new year and will see you on your next video my friend
Thanks Timmy! Have a great Christmas 🎄

Great catches. As soon as I saw the thumbnail I recognized the Galena depot. I first caught M338 there this summer.
Thanks fallingup90! Boy that was a long train, especially at 10 mph.

They definitely emptied the yard with that one!
That thing took forever to go through those curves!
I've been through Galena it was on the trip to go see the abandoned Chicago Great Western tunnel (aka Winston tunnel)
Interesting spot, pretty slow 🐌 moving trains there. Not sure where the Galena Junction was?
The curve coming off the bridge is very tight. Speed limit is 10 MPH
Sure is, slow going and long!
