  • We put in 340 feet of new rail and all new ties and a lot of new tie plates
    got put in on Curve 6. 78 foot sticks of new rail were two 39 footers
    that had been thermite welded together in order to eliminate some
    joints on this curve.

    Great to see your 'headache' has been taken care of. I know from watching your videos this turn 6 has been a situation that you have been concerned about for a while.
    Please let your upper-management team know that it is appreciated beyond words, that they permit yo to make these videos and post them.
    I'm willing to bet they will use many of them as training films.

    Your new owners are really making a big investment in the track! Its nice to see a company that is willing to spend that amount of money to make things very good.... instead of leaving it as 'that should get us by'! Many companies (in all fields.. not just coal) don't want to reinvest in their infrastructure.... they usually just want to count the profits and not put that back into the company or the employees.

    • @ccrx6700

      Yes they are Mike and it's really great to see happening. This

    Awesome!! NO MORE MUD😁. The smithy in me always drools every time you show that pile of spikes haha!! Everyone wants spike knives, but with the railroads rules nowadays, they will be harder to legally come by, unless you can source them from the company-at least that's my understanding. So glad that troubled curve is fixed- and beautifully!

    I know it is very hard work, but I'm glad to see that men haven't been replaced totally by automation. I feel like only a real person can see if there are real issues once replacing/installing things like this. I can't deny that massive railroad tie machine was AMAZING though lol! Saw a video of a massive railway laying machine (I think overseas). Not sure there is one in the US, but was pretty neat looking. I can't believe how the old lines from ages past are still there, yes rotting wood, but for goodness sakes, mankind is pretty incredible that they built the old lines that still can be traveled on at times sans the rock falls.
    Just started really looking into all this and I'm fascinated :) Thank you for your videos!

    Thanks for sharing Dave it’s really nice to see investment in the railway. Reducing the number of joints in jointed track is always a win. Have you considered thermite welding every other joint? Good evening, Dave. Hey, I am not late to the tonight show. Question: Did they have their cripper/ azer machine to azes the ties? They had it here at the GET when they changed out the rail here. When vision was here at the GET last year, they had wooden stripes to install in the joints when they made up the joints to keep the gap.. Just a reminder don't ever use your IR gun on the bolts and hammer on the other side of the joint. That is what brakes the anvils in the bolt guns. The curve looks great. One tie and one rail at a time. Thumbs 👍 up to you, Dave, and you company on the capital project.

    Maybe this rule only applies to the CWR (ribbon rail), but I did not think replacing rail when temps were below 85 or higher was a good idea. And yes, I do realize that necessity trumps all standards.

    • @ccrx6700
      @ccrx6700  Місяць тому

      You are right laying CWR has stringent specs to do it. We have 16.8 miles of track and 16 miles of that is jointed already. Only
      putting in a few strings of 78 foot rails will have very little affect
      expansion or contraction. Plus every 78 foot there was a joint,
      so no worries. Thanks so much for visiting with us and may you have a very good day my friend.

    That's really cool to see that the company spent the money to rehabilitate this section of track on "Curve 6". Question Dave, now that you've had these 78' "sticks" of rail installed, are there going to be thermite welds done in the future to eliminate more joints? On the railroad line in my neck of the woods, 78' sticks of rail were welded together mostly with the "full penetration" weld with an arc welder, instead of the usual thermite welds. About 4 or 5 miles of track were rehabilitated during the "Pestilence 19" lockdown and they replaced all of the rails, ties, tie plates etc in the process, including ballast. Most of this trackage had 115 Pound rail rolled by Beth Steelton in the mid 1990s / early 2000s, along with "early" Pandrol clips. This replaced the original tracks that had the B&O's 100 Pound stick rail from the mid 1930's, when a major grade crossing elimination project was done. (Some of the rails were rolled after WWII on some of the tracks) The old tracks from the 1930s had a brownish maroon colored ballast that looked a lot like oversized "pea gravel". This was slag that was used that B&O brought in hopper cars from the steel mills in PA. Not all of the 1930s era track is gone though, as there's still some old sections still in place. On the recently restored part that was abandoned in the early 1990s, this trackage was upgraded to 132 Pound rail "ribbon rail". I hope your able to rest from your labors on Saturday, as the Lord's Day is Saturday, not Sunday. (I'm an SDA Christian) Stay safe and God Bless.

    • @ccrx6700

      You are right Josh, it is really good to have them spend money on
      making our track safer. Loved the story about your rails, we had
      considered slag ballast in the past, it's really cheap but I think it
      would be really hard on my tamping tools. We have done many
      thermite welds here in the past but to do a complete welding
      of our main line will not happen. Thanks so much for visiting with us and may you have a very good day my friend.

    What criteria are used to decide that a rail has to be replaced?
    When hammering on a long spike - or whatever it is called, it would be wise to hold it with tongs.

    • @ccrx6700
      @ccrx6700  Місяць тому

      Your welcome Robin. In curves the main thing we look at is
      what is called curve wear on the rail. The inside rail head gets a
      wear to it so instead of the rail head having a normal profile of
      the rail head being pretty much at a 90 degree angle, the rail
      wears so it becomes a sloped area. The greater the curve wear
      on the rail, the greater the chances become for a rail car wheel
      to climb the rail and derail. I haven't done a video on curve
      wear yet but will at some point. Thank you very much for visiting with us and may you have a really good day my friend.

      @ccrx6700  Місяць тому +1

      They often do get a slight bend to them when pulling them out Mike. We never re use spikes, always put new ones in. Plus the old spikes do get some wear on the spike shank and don't have
      the holding power a new one does. Thank you very much for visiting with us and may you have a really good day my friend.

    Dave, I realize that given the product you haul the ballist is going to get messed up, but why not,( while you have the rail pulled) excavate the entire bed,clean the ballist , then replace it with the new ties and longer sticks of rail? Dirty ballist is the bain of ties as I’m sure you know. That said it does look better,thanks for the video.

      You are right John, that would have been the ideal way to go.
      But apparently time and money constraints negated that in that
      there was a bunch of other work that got done on main line track
      where the train goes 25 and this curve the train is only gong at about 10 leaving the prep plant. So they spend the money and
      time on working on higher speed track. But still this curve

      Yes we on occasion have welded the joints Pete. The nice thing
      is with welding it eliminates the joints which is the weak spot
      in the rail. We have no public road crossings and only a few
      private ones. You are right, we are very fortunate they are
      spending money on making our track safer. Thank you very much for visiting with us and may you have a really good day my friend.

    Hi Mr. Dave, it's always great to see a railroad kept up. Your a short line, what class 1 do you tie into i know you get don't interchange, just wandering.

    Great to see the company putting money into the track, keeping the operation running smoothly, safely and efficiently! I’m curious though 8:25 since the rail is pretty much completely removed here would it have been possible to remove the ties and use a front loader to completely remove all the clogged ballast and replace with new clean ballast? And I just mean to the depth of the ties.

      You are right about that Shaz, it is great to see them putting money into track safety. The rail on the low side of this curve
      stayed in place so it would have not been possible to take everything out like you suggested. I wish we could have done
      what you are saying tho, but time and money constraints
      prohibited it. We had other projects main line where the speed
      is 25 to do also, this curve is only 10 mph. Thank you for
      paying us a visit and may you have a very good day my friend.

      @@ccrx6700 ah thanks for the clarification! I didn’t notice the other rail stayed in place. Well this work was a great improvement and will last many years I’m sure. Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing these videos with us!

    Just a question, Dave.. how do you bend those long sticks to fit the curve? I love your vids! Keep 'em comin '!😊

      Here is a link to a video I made on how to bend rail for a curve, it's all done by hand. Glad you are enjoying the home movies. Thank you so much for taking the time to write in and to watch. May you have a very good day my friend.

    Was the complete removal of the track on this curve considered,dozing all the old dirty ballast away and pretty much starting from scratch,replacing all the ties and ballast as well as the rails?

    • @ccrx6700
      @ccrx6700  Місяць тому +1

      That was my exact suggestion to take the track out and start all
      over again RJ, but time and money constraints negated that.
      But at least we did make some major improvements and it
      is much safer now for trains. Thank you very much for visiting with us and may you have a really good day my friend.
