I got teary-eyed to hear you say Soto's name. Are you a fan of Cadillac Tramps? Punk Rock Karaoke? I already was a fan but now I really want to hang out with you 👍👍👍
Can't count how many times I've seen or met Social D. My former roommate's uncle had a lot to do with Time Bomb records. She introduced me to Mike a few times. This was back around the late mid to late '90s, around 'White Trash, White Heat. You did an amazing job on this, Adam.
I was little and my mom was dating one of the drummers of Social D...I grew up on their music! I loved seeing the little bit of history i didn't know! Thank you for the share!
Punks not dead. You a such a good guy, wanting to get that shot inside but let that person sleep well" definitely one of the main reasons why I enjoy watching you as always fun and u are really respectful to people.
The summer of "Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell" was my last summer before moving out of state to start my adult life. This was the album that played at every party that year. It was the last time I saw so many friends, many were starting careers, getting married, couple of them died later that year. Was a great summer and SOCIAL D always brings back some great memories.
On the same record as "Reach For The Sky" was the song "Don't Take Me For Granted" which was written about the passing of longtime member Dennis Darnell. That song always gives me chills knowing the story behind Mike & Dennis' friendship.
OC had a huge punk scene back in the day. I miss that. I wasn’t a punker kind of guy that was my younger brother but I still always loved a lot of the bands, especially the OC guys because of growing up in the OC. Social D, Adolescents, Agent Orange, Vandals, Offspring, US Bombs, Ignite, etc… Good times. 🤙🏻

Yes the Cukoo’s Nest! My brother got to play there in a punk band called Citizen Fear in the 80’s. The guitar player’s name was Andy Winston. He taught me how to play the Ventures Walk don’t Run when I was a kid. My older brother Frank played drums with him. In fact my parents went to the gig when my brother played there at the Cukoos Nest and saw all the punk rockers and freaked out. Made him quit the band. I am 10 years younger so by the time I was into Goth and Punk Rock they didn’t care. Ha ha. I remember seeing No Doubt at the Doll Hut when they first started. That place was tiny.

Hello Adam The Who, I am rapidly learning that SOME of my best friends from old, have become my most hurtful critics of my vlog. There is a certain loneliness to being a daily vlogger. It is really a new frontier of journalism. We are documenting some of the times and places that for the most are ignored by the traditional TV news media. For example, the other day when you talked to the older man who collects Tonka toys and he told of how he has given some of his Tonka trucks away to people passing by. That really touched my heart. My dad, when he was still alive, collected Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars and trucks. He would often give them away to children in our old neighborhood and bring them to the hospital for children. I hold such a great respect for you. In all so many ways, you inspired me to take the first steps to being a vlogger. I am finding it to be fun and also just plain hard work. Social D is my favorite band and I wouldn't be here with out them. Some of the best times of my life is driving around with them on the radio with no where to go and eventually saw them in life.
Wow Adam. Talk about memories. The last thing I did before leaving So cal was visiting Bill the owner of Black Hole Records right there on Harbor Blvd. Bill gave me a stack of Black Hole Records stickers to take with me to Nashville. I’ll never forget discovering Punk Rock walking into Black Hole Records for the first time. Seeing records nailed to the ceiling and buying Ramones records. Black Hole Records was located on Brea Blvd. in the 80’s. When I last saw Bill I thanked him for keeping Black Hole Records going. I told Bill I appreciate him. Being a punk rock kid in the 80’s in Orange County, record stores like Black Hole, punk rock shops like Erazzmatazz in the Orange Circle were safe havens for us punk rock goth kids. Discovering all the bands buying the manic panic hair dye. Those were the best of times. I didn’t know Bill closed Black Hole. They were at that location on Harbor Blvd for 20 years or more. Bill is a legend! His wife ran the vintage clothing shop. I hope he just moved the store. Thank Adam. Love your videos man. In that photo you show in your video, Bill the owner of Black Hole Records is all the way on the left. He would always where t-shirt sport coat and shades. He looked a lot like Kevin Haskins from Bauhaus. Bill will always have a special place in my heart. Great guy.
Been there many times! I was in a band called The Mechanics. Dennis and Mike use to come to our studio on Harbor and Commonwealth all the time. I'm now playing drums in Agent Orange. Cool video! I have a ton of stories!! Some of which cannot be mentioned here.😂
You had the correct location of The Cuckoo’s Nest. The building was demolished in early 2000. The first S.D. Gig was not at The Nest. I believe it was at La Vida Hot Springs. Ness was in a brawl at The Nest when part of his ear was bit off. The owner of Black Hole Records was in The Mechanics. He told me that Ness would sometimes roadie for them. Ness said he was stabbing a wall at The Black Hole when his hand slipped causing his left pinky finger to be sliced. It’s permanently damaged which gives him (part of) his guitar playing style. There’s a warehouse near Black Hole Records where many of the Fullertown bands (including S.D.) would rehearse and have parties. Lastly, Ness for a time in the 1980’s lived in a little shack behind a house in Fullerton. That’s where he wrote many of the songs that would propel the band to success. The mural is clearly an homage to the City of Costa Mesa, not S.D. The Ramones and T.S.O.L. are also depicted. Cool little video 🤙

Another nice video. I remember that about 10 years ago Mike Ness had his Lemon Heights house for sale (nice place). I liked the mural as well with the depiction of Costa Mesa landmarks, including the Paulo drive in movie theater. Thanks again!!
I’ve seen social distortion quite a few few times. Best punk shows I’ve ever been to also saw Mike Ness in Vegas still to this day for sure one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to period. His rockabilly work is some of his best.

I love Social Distortion!!! Been listening to them for about 20 years give or take and actually had the pleasure of seeing them live at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN. with my wife some years ago. Great performance and great experience with your videos everyday.
The picture at Black Hole records with the two none band members was the owners of Black Hole and Stray Cats Vintage. I frequented that place many a times in my youth along with Bionic Records, those were the two best record stores around in the Fullerton area.
My band in the 70's was called TV Violence. We played shows with the Vandals and Red Plastic Guns in Charlotte N.C. My stage name way Ricky Rat and I loved every minuet of it. Things change and like you my life is nothing like it was. I love Social D, Black Flag, and the Circle Jerks....oh yeah and the Dead Kennedy's. Cool video.
Excellent video! You should go to Manhattan & Hermosa Beach where Pennywise, Black Flag, the Descendents, the circle Jerks and more are all from. All went to my old High School, Mira Costa in Manhattan Beach. Footnote Mira Costa was also used for Hannah Montana’s high school. Also the infamous Black Flag Church in Hermosa Beach!
Ah, Black Hole Records. After Peer Records on Euclid shut down, they were the next most convenient local punker store, saving me from having to trek all the way out to Zed Records or whatever. It was Bill and Anna who first convinced me to maybe chill out on the 24/7 hardcore thrash and check out some early classic stuff like The Stooges. For the record (no pun intended,) Black Hole was actually in Brea for their first several years before they packed up and moved to Harbor Blvd in Fullerton. Don't know when they originally opened, but I went to the Brea shop for a number of years before they moved. Thanks to google it can be pinned down: opened in Brea in 1986, moved to Fullerton in 1991.
Adam, thanks for this great vlog! I grew up in Costa Mesa and lived there most of my life. Mike Ness was a resident of Costa Mesa for a very long time. Growing up in Costa Mesa it was not uncommon to see him around town driving in one of his cars or dining at a restaurant.
I love Fullerton. One of my grandparents lived there for many years. Lot’s of trees and hills. Not to mention the best park, Hillcrest. Also check out Angelo & Vinci’s restaurant off Harbor Blvd and Chapman.
Thank you, Adam. Learned a lot about these bands and some of the places they started out in. Very interesting. I enjoy learning new things. Great job. God bless you
Great video Adam Awesome ! Were the Cuckoo's Nest is at changed alot thier was a country bar in the back and a laundry Matt on the side. You should more videos on The LA Punk scene.
@TheDailyWoo I love when you do these deep dive videos... so much information! Please keep doing them for as long as you can. The Three's Company video you did is one of my favorites!
My dad sold Mike Ness a hood for the Black 1950 Chevy , It was back when Mike Ness had a house in Costa Mesa on Town street in the 1990s . After he sold the house I don't know where he is now . But I love his music .
Black Hole Records was on Brea Blvd in Dowtown Brea, before they demolished the downtown Brea area and built the new promenade. A few businesses from downtown Brea relocated to downtown Fullerton.
Didn't they have like three locations? I remeber early 90's was State Colledge by CSUF and one by Orange Park acres, possibly #3 being Costa Mesa(?) Or am I remembering another store? I do remeber Stray Cat Vintage Clothing.
Really enjoy these vlogs Adam as I find them very interesting. Also I know all the hard work you put into these so thank you.....again very much appreciated. Stay safe and much love.

I got to see Social Distortion a handful of years ago (finally) at a festival they were headlining here in socal. I think that was probably the last time I was in a moshpit also. I played a show with Agent Orange at the knitting factory in hollywood I think somewhere around 2007 or 2008. Never got to see or play a show with the Vandals though another good oc/socal punk band, but I loved some of their songs growing up as well. Your punk video from florida the other day was one of my fav videos ive seen of yours! It was really cool and interesting because ive been out here in socal my whole life so to see and hear florida perspective of the scene was great. And also Im not gonna lie Im jealous bc since Im younger than you I missed a lot of the raw punk days and kinda just grabbed the very tail end of the peak stuff. I got to go to a lot of good punk shows though out here. Ive seen Rancid moer than once, green day, bouncing souls (jealous you got to see them several times in the early days as you mentioned in the other vid!), the briggs, street dogs and so many other of my favorite punk bands. The last show I played with my old band was with Mike from Mxpx so that was great. We have some good punk bands that came out of CA here! Our main local venues growing up here were showcase theater in corona (played there a few times only), and chain reaction. Im sure youve played those venues before!!
I grew up in Costa Mesa. I think my brother played at the cuckoo’s nest before. So what about the concert factory? I don’t remember if that was the same building or somewhere near there.
Love the vid!! I'm from DFW and was lucky to call Vinnie and Dime friends. pan fucking tera was out hometown band that made it. Love seeing local history in my home now. (since 2015) I was actually inspired to pick up and move mostly by your videos!! We took a vacation to laguna beach in summer of 2014 I decided... why don't I just move here full time? lol

Thanks Adam! For all you do!
I used to work for SST Records. Fun times!
Mike Ness's son used to be my roommate.😄
Really ? How was he ? Would like to hear some storys
My favorite band!!! Thanks for the tour!!
Love this episode!.. yep more please.
Hell yeah stoked to be a punk from OC!
Thx for that! I was gonna try to hunt down the Cuckoos Nest but you provided it for me. Grateful.
Thank you, Adam. Learned a lot about these bands and some of the places they started out in. Very interesting. I enjoy learning new things. Great job. God bless you
Really enjoyed this one Adam. I really wasn't into punk much, more of a metal head myself, although I did like the Plimsols. Good stuff.
Just rolled through a majority of their discography yesterday. Always a good time.
Great video Adam Awesome ! Were the Cuckoo's Nest is at changed alot thier was a country bar in the back and a laundry Matt on the side. You should more videos on The LA Punk scene.
That is a fantastic mural! Rare to see one in black and white. Very cool.
Check his Instagram @never1959
Thank you Adam for the tour. It was awesome!
That’s awesome !
You’re getting closer to where I live. Interesting history. Fullerton changed a lot.
@@kaywoodie not sure about additional locations but the one in Dowtown Brea is the one that relocated to downtown Fullerton, along with comic mania.
@@therealjohnsquad I think there was only the one. I was thinking about Bionic Records. Shows how good my memory is, I left Anahiem, in 1995!
Really enjoy these vlogs Adam as I find them very interesting. Also I know all the hard work you put into these so thank you.....again very much appreciated. Stay safe and much love.
Dropping a thumbs up.
I still have a bunch of punk flyers in a pee Chee folder from the 80’s use to live in Hemet and we’d go to Fenders ball room in Long Beach
Any love for Fenders in the house ?
Knew it very well. I now live just a few blocks from where it was. Now its location is basically a Best Western Hotel.
Few times during my HS years
Bands that stood out
Chili Peppers , GnR , the Cult how about another long forgotten venue
the Dancing waters
in San Pedro ?
@@beachkidboy
Yea lol .that area where Fenders was cleaned up nicely , and the pike area a few blocks down , you would never realize how shady it was in the day
I got to see Social Distortion a handful of years ago (finally) at a festival they were headlining here in socal.
Glad to see that you are still employing your traveling Landscaping Crew...Haven’t heard them lately...
Digging these Band history Stories...
My first concert when I was 8 years old was Social D! Hardly know anyone born and raised in OC who isn’t a fan...love the video Adam!!
I grew up in Costa Mesa. I think my brother played at the cuckoo’s nest before. So what about the concert factory? I don’t remember if that was the same building or somewhere near there.
Same building
I've been in the Concert Factory in '83. I don't know of the building's history but I believe it is the same space.
Love the 90s punk band videos Adam. Love to see one on the Muffs, esp with Kim's passing
I was very sad to heard that . Found out a few days after and really took me by surprise . I was lucky to see them once and glad I did
Jackson Browne went to Sunny Hills High School also in Fullerton.
Late getting to see this but AWESOME! Seen Social D three times and a huge fan of 25 years!
Love the vid!! I'm from DFW and was lucky to call Vinnie and Dime friends. pan fucking tera was out hometown band that made it. Love seeing local history in my home now. (since 2015) I was actually inspired to pick up and move mostly by your videos!! We took a vacation to laguna beach in summer of 2014 I decided... why don't I just move here full time? lol
With friends like you, who needs enemies, you ain't right, you ain't never gonna be, I'm leaving you.....
