First it was Thalheimer's/Hecht's, then that moved into a newer wing and Belk moved into the old Hecht's, and finally the movie theater replaced the Belk a couple years after crosstown rival Southpoint opened
I am not sure if it was mentioned but that restaurant you looked in and said "Northgate Jam" was actually the old Chik-Fil-A in the mall. It still surprised me how even way after they closed they still kept the old soda fountain machines and everything inside the closed off area. I live in the Durham area and grew up going to Northgate in the 1990s and it used to be the place to go to on the weekends, you could always find something to get into. Sooo many memories. The last time I went to Northgate was earlier in 2019 and was never able to go back, now they have officially closed for good, so thank you for this video.
I grew up going to this mall and it was so packed and the renovations they did not help at all and they were too late. Back when southpointe mall got built they took a lot of business from Northgate mall. One of the main issues was the crime and gangs at northgate. Plus just it became less interesting and fun to go to compared to the big shiny mall southpoint. But basically northgate mall fell behind with keeping up to date.
The store near dtlr that had the chain pull down gate was a gaming cafe called game frog where you had original Xbox, ps2, game cube and whatever retro system they had on hand plus you could pay like 10 dollars per hour to game
The area near the theater is the newest construction at the mall , most of this area was never occupied. This place was a great place to go for most of my life. Like most malls nowadays they are becoming a thing of the past.
Durham native born in 1963, so I grew up going to this mall. The original movie theatre was roughly outside the Sears with entry from the inside and outside. I believe in the 1974 renovation it became a two-plex. Not sure when it closed. In the mid-70s one of the first mall Chick-fil-A's opened in the interior just beyond where there was an elaborate merry go round across from a Spencer's. The Macy's/Hechts/10 Plex theatre came much later. I moved to California in 2017 and Northgate was not in great shape though there are more stores open than you'd think, with some business services like the DMV taking up some of the retail space. Ironically this mall lasted longer than South Square, that was located in or southern part of the city. That was a traditional two-story large mall that died a painful death (demolished after it became a gang haven, now home to a Super Target and other stores) once the enormous and quite nice mixed indoor/outdoor Southpoint Mall opened even further south from downtown.
Great video 👏🏼 I grew up going to south square mall & north gate mall They’re both close now 😭😭 still live in Durham Last time I went to north gate mall was in March 2020 😭. Can’t believe the security wouldn’t let you finish filming the whole mall 🤦🏻♂️
Yep... Southern Season is gone... K&W Cafeteria is gone... the movie theater is still not allowed to reopen because of the COVID restrictions... empty storefronts all over the mall... yep, that mall is dead...
@@dianeadkins-diorio1783 It was always packed when I went there and its proximity to rich Chapel Hill demanded quality and service to go along with the specialty items. Here's another tip: if your local mall has to implement a YEP (Youth Enforcement Policy) in which guests under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult (parent, etc.) after a certain time of day, you know that mall is on its way out; Northgate had such a YEP in place, and things went downhill from there...
YEP it sure did. When I was 16 we would ride the bus there and the kids were unkept and unraised. Then you see the same ones WITH kids next generation. Then the shootings started. I got a job and moved. Next thing you know, people are talking about “going to get a piece”.
@@AjsAbandonedAdventures yes, they permanently closed as of 4 May 2020 while the state of NC was still under stay-at-home orders over COVID but just before moving into Phase 1 of reopening
FYI that movie theater used to be a Hudson belk while the sears was the same and the Macy’s used to be a hechts
Thanks for the Info 😊

North gate had a theater originally but it was destroyed by a tornado in 1984. The present on was built in the early 2000s
Thank you for doing this. I had happy childhood and Teenage memories here from the 80's and 90's.

That's not the original movie theater. The original mall only had two theaters.
Thanks for the video Mr. Aj! I went to DSA and I would go to north gate for lunch sometimes. Other times after school on a Friday
You're welcome and thanks for watching😊
It's so unfortunate my dad would take me here all the time when i was little
Yes it is sad to see places like this dwindle away☹

Wow so many memories
It's dead like West Oaks Mall in Houston, TX. Tons of empty store fronts and I think only two shops open in the food court!
Oh wow that's crazy there 😥
@@AjsAbandonedAdventures If you ever come to Houston, you should check it out.
I definitely will if I ever get out that way😊
You should’ve explored the downstairs part of the mall bunch of emptiness
I wish I had known about the downstairs I would've tried to explore it

I worked here from 2005-07. It was dying even then. It’s gone now
I wonder what they did with the Carousel?
RIP Northgate Mall... this mall officially shut down on 4 May 2020 during the COVID-19 "stay-at-home" order :(
I used to go to this time a lot when my family in Durham but this mall had a lot of crime when South Square was gone
You should go to University Place Mall in Chapel Hill NC that mall is dead
Sounds good I'll put that 1 on my agenda...Thanks 😊
