Every time I hear about such a project I'm ready to cry happy tears. We live in dry Colorado. The soil is so poor and doesn't hold water that even up in the mountains where it's relatively green, the ground mostly stays beige colored. Last year our town got rain for almost every day in the summer, but one day without rain and it looked miserable again, because the ground does not hold water. Three years ago I started regreening project in my own yard, I chose hugelkulture method. I collected natural debris in and around town, avalanche wood, piles of branches, I had many people bringing me hundreds bags of leaves that they would just take to the landfill, also got trucks after trucks of free wood chips. I can't move mountains of materials like this, so have to pay for the tractor, since ours stayed in another town where we used to live, but all of the things that people mindlessly get rid of, I asked to bring to me. My soil is growing! I can already see the results of my hard work! After watching videos like this one, I now want to improve at least part of my in-laws property. They own around 200-300 acres of desert. We own an excavator, so I'll ask their permission and will start digging swales. I really hope that will make at least small change in Colorado. I love people there dearly, but boy, beige color depresses me to the point that I want to leave.
Biochar is the best and only treatment that is more or less permanent. Adding organic material is great but a very small amount of that material becomes humus which is what lasts a long time, the rest breaks down relatively fast, a few years and 90% of that material is gone. Whereas nearly 100% of biochar mass will remain in the soil, and is far more able to house microbial life, which is in turn what makes soil fertile. Amazonian Terra Preta is what it is largely due to biochar. Just remember, when using biochar, to charge it first (or expect stunted growth the first year). After you make a batch, or empty a purchased bag into a tote, make sure its sufficiently pulverized, and then throw a fairly heavy amount of fertilizer, preferably organic, such as tomato-tone, and mx it around a little before you water it in a bit. Then you let it sit for a week or so before applying

I live in Germany, and I'm happy to see this kind of effort in such a country like India. Many people in the developed world take their basic necessities for granted: water, electricity, internet, welfare. It's so impressive to see these hard working and smart people raise up from a dusty desert to build a thriving ecosystem. It's much more impressive than all of the huge skyscrapers and airports that China is trying to flaunt, like in some kind of competition that destroys the environment. India is the biggest democratic country in the world, and I see so much hope there.
All that, but with the caveat that the dusty desert is one of their own making (even though western companies have had a hand or three in it as well). As for the democracy, well, with centralized media and religious fearmongering it gets you someone like modi, who is basically hindu-hitler trying hard to go to war with pakistan. This is not developed by a well functioning democratic state, this is the work of a random bollywood star and local initiative.

Well after 9/11 America start a war against terrorism but at the same time 26/11 Mumbai attack india didn't did anything but approach diplomacy & show to world about culprits. But still non of the OIC Islamic country raised any objection. 1million Islam followers there, shame on their so called Islamic nation) I'm a Hindu, i will never accept hindu-india. We do believe in secular india. But at the same time if a country which is based on islamic religion send their jihadi to kill our citizens then they will called terrorist but why not radical islamic terrorist? There are 1.3bilion Hindus in world but how much hindu-national there? But what about islam & other religion there n number of country where islam is state religion even if you want to get citizenship you must be an islam followers otherwise you can't, even their state of the head must be a islam follower. But if we ask questions on it so we are called Islamophobia. Great then go to hell, we are proud for our country & proud for a such a diversity multi faith world largest democracy, "DEMOCRACY ". Talking about this projects i know although we have more GDP than France & UK still we face such types of problems, that's because of ours colonial era rules & regulations & paper work which leads delay & even cancel more project. Another one there's low GDP per capital income which is another abstraction for Being self sufficient. Well It will solved in another one or two decade completely. Well thanks

Hi guys, Been a while since I'd seen this video and commented. Nice to know and see people mustering around a great cause. And sorry, saw comments only today.. Dunno how I missed them. Extremely grateful to see water reaching the hinterlands. From a religious perspective as Anand here has asked I'd like to reply with all due respect that religion was supposed to make life easy for mankind. Along the way if it looks like a pain it is because it was hijacked by satanical nut cases or at least people influenced by such nut cases... Am speaking about my home pitch problems... I belive in calling a spade a spade. 'Do not make people loath religion' -Prophet Muhammad (God's peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The best of what a man leaves behind are three: a righteous child who supplicates for him, ongoing charity the reward of which reaches him, and knowledge that is acted upon after him.” All Islam says is do good, don't harm, give everybody and everything it's rightful place.. Worship the supreme, formless, nirankar creator and none of the creation. I don't see anything wrong in calling my earth my mother.. I came from her, she feeds me by the leave of God and I shall return to her lap one day.. . . Until then I need to walk humbly in the earth. Allah says: “And turn not your face away from men with pride, nor walk in insolence through the earth. Verily, God likes not each arrogant boaster.” (Qur’an, 31:18)
This is what humans are here for, to make things better! It is so very encouraging to see all the good that is being done here. It makes me happy to be a member of the human race. It also gives so much hope for the future. Many thanks to the noble souls that made this happen!
andrew I know how you are feeling after witnessing the water revolution....I have been a part of paani foundation as a JALMITRA (people living in cities can go for shramdaan to their nearest villages and do the labor work on 1st may which is known for labor day also) I also had experienced similar feeling after the day ends with my body tired after doing the physical labor work which iam not use to. paani foundation has a dedicated team of professionals and they have prepared this after looking into each and every minute details and they have tried to fill all the loop holes in the competition. good that you are spreading this around the world.
Yes! People can really learn all over the world from the work of the Paani Foundation and all of the volunteers who made such an epic and massive transformation of the landscape, water cycle, and economy.
Really thrilled to see that competitions like this can yield such relevant outcomes towards a sustainable future. In the 'prosperous village competition' pani foundation can include another very important topic of indigenous seed conservation to create more and more seed banks.
Namaste.. I love very much this kind of rain water harvesting and store it for agriculture and other purposes.. When I was in Karnataka, I like to visits many farm and water storage management.. Now I am introducing this system in Indonesia and Cambodia.. Dhanyavadh...
All done by hand...not a mechanical shovel in sight. This is the most impressive aspect of this and other farm projects in India's poor regions. People coming together...kids and adults, working in the hundreds, for a common good. Well done Paani Foundation. Noble Peace Prize should be given.
I am from one of the drier regions of Maharashtra, we moved out into cities because it was too risky surviving there, i occasionally used to visit my home town, and i have experienced the water scarcity, people fighting over water, crops failing, having to buy water to drink, its too sad. And now since the population is set to grow, its even more pressure on the water tables and other sources. I really hope this becomes a world wide trend because after india it will be other countries experiencing water scarcity. I thank Paani Foundation for their work which mightve saved thousands of lives and set a trend which will help the humanity eventually. I also thank Andrew Millison for this great documentary which provided me and my fellow people with insights about the situation.
One of the best videos I have seen in a long time. I believe this sort of action turns the clock back millions of years. Needs to be replicated in all low rainfall regions and more sustainable ecology than big concrete dams.

That sounds so fantastic for these villages to not having to worry during the dry season. Increase in the quality of the lands with healthier soil for crops to grow all year long. All these people have the benefit of new friends as well!
Apart from all the important, even life saving aspects, just imagine how beautiful the planet would be if all agriculture looked roughly like this. And also, permaculture seems to me to be the only way to make possible the coexistence of more and more people and nature.
WOW this is amazing! I'm a civil engineering student and my goal is to become a missionary by going to underdeveloped countries and designing water treatment systems based on their culture. This video definitely changed some of my perspective on how I can achieve that. Thank you so much for this vid I will definitely look into them. I am so happy that the social mindset of the village got changed in addition to the water systems changing.
Imagine how much more difficult it would have been to deal with the Coronavirus situation this year without any water in the villages. An added spread vector in the form of water tankers and the rush to fill water
ofcourse it can be. it just needs a team of like minded people. Just to let you know Paani foundation is almost a 100 % "volunteer" work. the villagers "Donated" their time and effort to make this possible. Men women children came out in hoards to chip in. a small group of women also created "cooking camps" where they cooked for all the volunteers so that nobody even takes a break to go back to their respective homes for food.
What a blessing to see these good works implemented amongst people and their labors prospering so well! Good work and GOD BLESS your hopes and aspirations
This is A NEW DESIGN FOR POSITIVE CHANGE. IT WILL BE A NEW DESIGN FOR LIVING. This is going to be a greater revolution than the GREEN REVOLUTION. Decentralization of resources, power in all forms, is the catalyst here. The common man in India comes from the village and it is here any change is expected. This will cure the malady at its source. Let there be LIGHT to all here.
Many countries are spending money on sea defences because of rising sea levels when they should be spending money in drought areas to store more water.
Thank you for informing us Indians about work being done in our own country, by our own people. It is embarrassing that such good work is completely ignored by the media. There is also a political aspect to it, always having a water scarcity problem so that they can make big promises after each summer.
Challenging the villages into a competition is a clever idea: you get much more buy-in from the villagers and the skeptics from the start. I'm glad to see that these kind of initiatives are taking place across the world. The human race has ruined so much of the planet with little thought for consequence until now.

I wish that this project is implemented in other Indian states as well.. This initiative is an inspiration that our ecosystem can be restored and so much prosperity and self-reliance can be brought into the lives of our farmers.
I think it works because it is not the government. They are always full of regulations and paper pushers, nothing gets done. Because this is from the ground up with a lot of time spent into getting the villagers discussing and working together that it is truly their project that they did. So they have the interest and commitment to seeing that it continues, as there will be ongoing maintenance.
Such excellent works are not shown in our TV. Congratulations to the Project managers, and all the people who participated in this project. This is single example to show how if people get united leaving out all their prejudices and infightings and keeping politicians away they can envision and execute great projects for the common good and benefit of their own villages. The core theme is assured clean safe water round the year with the conservation and enriching of soil and preservation of natural ecosystem and totally chemical free agriculture, horticulture agro forestry animal husbandry fisheries mixed organic farming. We need to create such golden model villages so that the idea catches on and spreads across length and breadth of this country to create great awareness and also health wealth and prosperity for our rural and urban population.

The media all over the world loves disaster and hates good news.
Looks like some say local media shows it. Global media is likely owned by same people...banks & churches/"the powers"
Media will not publish otherwise they get benefits for it.
Indian media is trash
@@aenorist2431
Hindu-Hitler trying to go war with Pakistan? Ha ha how funny you are. To be honest if someterrorist from one country came & kill 200s of your citizens, then you must not do anything against them & bow head & welcome again for another terrorist attack according to you . Well after 9/11 America start a war against terrorism but at the same time 26/11 Mumbai attack india didn't did anything but approach diplomacy & show to world about culprits. Well whole world knows which country citizens get involved in 26/11 terrorist attack except some peoples like you, even David headly which is another culprit for supplying map/drone video footage now in US jail. Well he's a Pakistan origin American citizens.
In 26/11 attack these terrorist attacked narimon house, which is a little house for Israel people. Terrorist which is caught alive accepted that orders from their akka(terrorist handler) was if you killed one Judaism then it will equal to kill 10 hindu. But still they are called terrorist but not a radical islamist, but if any one question or talk about it then these terrorist sympathy people will call you Islamophobia. It's bitter truth man. But still we are staying happily with 200milion islam followers Indian citizens for n number of decade.(none this kind of multi faith country you found in this 'world ', even looking to Chinese & their treatment with uighur Islam followers, even there's bann on name 'Mohammed ', latest satellite images where clearly seen large number of "detection camp" & destroying 'domb' structural houses, repainting with Chinese communists style. But still non of the OIC Islamic country raised any objection. 1million Islam followers there, shame on their so called Islamic nation)
I'm a Hindu, i will never accept hindu-india.
Well thanks

Hi guys,
Been a while since I'd seen this video and commented.
'Do not make people loath religion'
-Prophet Muhammad (God's peace and blessings be upon him).
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The best of what a man leaves behind are three: a righteous child who supplicates for him, ongoing charity the reward of which reaches him, and knowledge that is acted upon after him.”
All Islam says is do good, don't harm, give everybody and everything it's rightful place..
Verily, God likes not each arrogant boaster.” (Qur’an, 31:18)
Indeed, an amazing success story of modern times for the world to follow from the great people of India! The world sure loves India!

Such a wonderful video. Educational, entertaining and more than anything else inspirational. It teaches us that in country where the Politician and the Media is apathetic to the plight of the common man, we should take charge of our own destinies. Armed with knowledge and team work, anything is possible. Thank you for making a video empowering our communities.

Wonderful, educational and uplifting video.
Beautiful work Andrew and congratulations India!
Paani Foundation has done much more than any leader could have ever done to the nation. It helped the once abandoned people in building self-reliance and self sufficiency. The more I watch the changes in the barren villages, the happier I feel. It was a real revolution for the right reasons.
