Can we talk about how while they knew 3D would sell more (The First Trailer and the one for Mouthful Mode got more views than Bayonetta 3’s and Xenoblade 3’s trailers respectively) they didn’t just stop there? They could’ve just yelled “3D Kirby. That’s the gimmick” and called it a day. Yet they did pretty much everything in their power to make this game feel grand.
The whole setting of the game is an abandon civilization. They fully followed into that, because The Level design feels natural rather than there being magic floating platforms for challenge. These feel like real places people could inhabit rather than obstacle courses specifically designed for the player. And the level designs are actually quite unique. Like Originull Wasteland being a dried up ocean, complete with Beach resorts and windmills, while the actual Beach world: Everbay Coast is a Power Plant/Hotel that got flooded.
All of the characters in this game are so expressive. The neat touch of Waddle Dees waving back to the player if you waved to them was a neat touch but the Beast Pack really shines in terms of detail just due to how accurate most of them are to their real life counterparts.
The music is some of the best the series has had so far. Almost all of the level themes are amazing to listen to and perfectly fit the mood. Dedede’s theme gets the most praise, but in my opinion, the first two themes in World One, that appear constantly throughout the soundtrack deserve just as much. Welcome to the New World pretty much puts Jump Up, Superstar to shame.
They also knew they couldn’t fit in as many abilities in as previous games, so not only did we get mouthful mode, but Upgrading Abilities is so much fun. The Challenge Roads also d a great job at testing your skills
If this kind of passion is included in future 3D games, Kirby is going to have a very bright future. Happy 30th Anniversary

51:05 Another thing about the Morpho Sword is that it has more attacks that are kinda hidden because no other hability has something similar. While you are blocking, holding the attack button on the ground will spawn two Fecto ilusions that orbit arround Kirby and home in on enemies. Doing the same in the air results in the shockwave attack that flips your screen.

Also for some reason people never talk about needle having 3 different moves, rather than the two most associate with (attack, moving attack, and jumping while holding attack. The jump actually does a multi-hit spin which makes it functionally different, even if it's still mostly useless compared to just spamming attack button). And ice also has a quirk where exiting from guard also does a small hit. And is actually relevant since ice is now being incorporated into speedruns because that extra hit makes guard->attack spam freeze bosses very fast.

It's funny how despite Forgotten Land's title, this game managed to deliver a genuinely unforgettable gaming experience; I seriously hope this game gets some sort of award, Forgotten Land definitely deserves to become ForGOTYen Land
I'd like to throw my hat in the ring and praise more of this game's music; "Decisive Battle: Ultimate Z", the battle theme in The Ultimate Cup Z does such a wonderful job at making bosses feel intense, and I think it's one of the best songs in the franchise
"Faded Dream of a Psychomeddler" was briefly mentioned in the video, but I think this song is phenomenal at setting the mood for Isolated Isles, ESPECIALLY with its piano

Then the giant fireball and rubble section came. Debris rained down on my ice shield, not hurting one bit. Then the giant fireball swooped in and ended me. I sort of saw Fecto Elfilis to be more like Dark Matter with the whole taking over worlds and posessing things idea, with Chaos Elfilis (more specifically phases 3 and 4) being more like Zero, with a plot to conquer the universe with beings of its own creation while hiding in a realm it made, attacking with what was part of itself, and the red-and-white coloring to top it all off.

I already had high expectations for this game leading up to release, and it still blew me away. As much as I love Planet Robobot, and as much as I enjoyed Star Allies, this is probably the most fun I’ve had with a Kirby game since Triple Deluxe, and the most fun I’ve had with a video game in years. The level design was great, the music was phenomenal, the visuals were fantastic, and the bosses, especially in the post-game, were insane! I’m not sure if Forgotten Land is my absolute favorite Kirby game, but it’s definitely in my top three.
Also, loved the detail of Dedede jumping up and smacking his tambourine when playing his new theme. Which, by the way, nearly made my jaw drop upon first hearing it. Seriously, it’s SO GOOD!

My first Kirby game, and now I think I’m hooked on the series. I’ve investigated the lore before, and it was cool, but I didn’t think I’d get into the games. Boy was I wrong.
53:56 you are not alone. I beat the arena on spring breeze mode, and I never figured out that attack until I watched a video that showed it.
54:52 so that’s where the side route is, damn.
Also, I got my own lore theory, so spoilers for the Forgotten Land:
So we learn that the prior residents of this forgotten land were technologically advanced due to catching Fecto Elfilis, then they left for “a land of dreams.” I heard one theory that they were the ancients, which makes some sense, since in prior games, we learn the Ancients are responsible for a lot of the relics that are seen in Dreamland. However, there’s: one thing that doesn’t sit right with me. The ancients were split into two branches, one specializing in science and the other magic. There’s no mention of magic in this game (as I remember). However, we have never actually seen a scientific ancient. So my theory is that the ancients as a catch all term pulls a classic history move, and lumps two entirely distinct groups together as one. The scientific ancients were a completely different group than the magic ancients, and they might’ve just had an alliance.
A bolder theory, the scientific ancients were humans. One obvious guess from this games design is that this is s version of Shiver star, either from a different time or after the ice age ends (we don’t know how long Kirby characters live, so thousands of years could be happening between games, so the ice age could’ve ended). A lot of the locations in Forgotten land are very familiar (especially the ice realm). It’s a bit far fetched, but humans being the scientific ancients and being long since mostly extinct is a very fun idea, and would mean we aren’t just dealing with a post apocalyptic earth, but an incredibly old earth, and these games are far in our future, when we’ve gained the technology to become gods, but are brought down by some unknown means.

3:43 Huh? That's a strange take... Its intense power and evasiveness makes it easily the best ability (not including tier 4s) for taking on bosses, metaphorical hands down.
The only "environmental" thing about it is that some surfaces can't be dug into, which is rare enough that it's not a very big deal.
bad takes on the low placement of the drill evos, too
I didn't notice that I needed to climb the debris, either. I thought it was like, a wall to hide behind.
    Rankings of Secondary abilities:
    10. Cluster Needle. Cool reference, gameplay's fine but we have a high standard here and it just doesn't do a lot.
    9. Chain Bomb. It's cool to set the bombs up but really makes the lack of bomb drop a glaring issue. Guard and attack to bomb drop would've been nice.
    8. Fleur Tornado. Very similar to the original Tornado gameplay-wise but it's stylish at least.
    7. Frosty Ice. Cool in concept (I hate that I didn't notice the accidental pun immediately), but it feels like I didn't get a lot of time with it before swapping to Blizzard Ice. Cute tho
    6. Volcano Fire. Very samey, but good.
    5. Chakram Cutter. It's like Cutter, but 2. I prefer it to the third evolution and the weird controls are interesting.
    4. Pencil Drill. The projectile is cool, but this is mostly carried by Drill itself being good and also Pencil Drill just being very cute, especially since you're literally encouraged to draw circles. If only you could dot the eyes... Well, at least it certainly adds a big ol' smile to me!
    3. Noble Ranger. It's like Chakram Cutter, but with Ranger. Also that fully charged attack is funny.
    2. Gigant Sword. I love how unique it is and how it ties into the Morpho Knight sword. Plus big and strong.
    1. Toy Hammer. Cute, powerful, fast, mobile, good stuff.
    Rankings of Tertiary abilities:
    10. Homing Bomb. It feels like the homing actively goes against the idea of setting up chains for enemies to run into, and it's hard to get all the explosions to hit when the bombs will move out of sync, leading to just one explosion actually hitting the enemy. Bomb Drop would've been nice as a way of having them NOT home so that you can have the best of both worlds. Kinda cute at least.
    9. Buzz-Saw Cutter. Has a bit of Megalomania going on but it feels a bit unwieldly with the way the riccochet works. Good for REALLY enclosed spaces but too situational. Fairly satisfying but less interesting than Evo 2.
    8. Crystal Needle. The caltrop trail seems lacking, and that feels like the biggest thing about it, other than a simple upgrade to an ability that sorta feels outclassed anyway.
    7. Dragon Fire. The dash attack is cool in concept but feels slower than it really should, at least not without having HUGE power. Something about turning with the fire breath feels slower, too. Big and Slow but without the Big. Very strong tho.
    6. Blizzard Ice. Nothing particularly wrong with it, just lacking in personality. Pretty crown tho.
    5. Stone Hammer. I like big numbers and extremity.
    4. Meta Knight Sword. It's very cool and stuff.
    3. Space Ranger. Adorable and cool.
    2. Storm Tornado. Running through The Beast Pack's Final Stand as a tornado of destruction striking down all within proximity while having wonderful speed to boot was extremely satisfying. So much greatness in an end-game ability.
    1. Twin Drill. It's a Teto reference, it's an extremely powerful version of the normal drill, it's fast, it has that enhanced stand-still aerial attack so that you can finally dot the eyes, it makes you extremely hard to hit, it's easily the best ability in the game barring maybe some Fourth evos, and even then I personally prefer Twin Drill and it's pretty close.

Absolutely loved this new Kirby experience can’t wait to see where the games go from here.
That said I do think Forgotten Land has a few key flaws that keep it from being the best. Namely how while the soundtrack is good, it never quite reaches the heights of previous soundtracks like SSU and I don’t think most of this soundtrack is memorable outside of the King Dedede remix. Also, the Beast Pack is rather underwhelming as the big bads and the weird timeskip offscreen credits redemption felt really out of place and disconnected. The new characters introduced in this game in general were not Kirby’s best.
Despite all that the level design is the best in the series by far and if they fix the weaker areas I think we will have something truly special in the future.

I know it's subjective, but I found this game to have easily my favorite kirby soundtrack and it's not even close. The amount of bombastic orchestral tracks with interesting melodies and progression made the soundtrack so great for me. Also this from what I can tell is the first kirby soundtrack to have an actual orchestra. I have always though kirby soundtracks were pretty good, but this game just blew me away. Most other kirby tracks stay very simplistic with the progression and the instrumentation, where the tracks often have the same mood, intensity and instrumentation the whole way through. In this game though in a single track you often have a huge variation and different melodies instruments and different sections throughout each track which makes them really dynamic and great to listen to without them getting boring quickly. Also how a lot of tracks build up to their climax tends to be extremely satisfying compared to the older titles (at least for me). It definitely shows that this soundtrack (at least from my perspective) has a lot more effort put into it than any other kirby soundtrack.
Again these are just what I prefer in music and since a lot of older game soundtracks don't have the features that I enjoy in music I tend to prefer newer soundtracks, but in no way do I think I'm somehow right and objectively correct these are just my opinions on this.
Also even if someone somehow isn't a fan of the final boss track you have to applaud the amount of effort that went into making that track, since it has so many different sections with a huge amount of different overlapping elements not to mention that they had to make 14 different fully orchestrated sections that transition between phases 1 and 2 while each of the transitions having to change the atmosphere smoothly. Also note that the song has about 9 minutes worth of really complex composition while having almost no repetition of any kind not to mention having it be composed for an orchestra which tends to be far more difficult.

@@somethin7020 Hate to burst your bubble (I like the soundtrack a lot too, even if it's not one of my favorites) but I'm like 95% sure it doesn't use a real orchestra. The final boss theme in particular is almost _definitely_ not orchestrated since the instruments in it sound like the exact same instruments Hirokazu Ando has been using for final boss themes since CROWNED. Doesn't make the songs any less good imo but I thought I'd mention it.

My rankings (with explanations, of course)
    Base abilities:
12: Crash. Never used the base form, I don’t like the vulnerability if you don’t one shot the enemy.
11: Needle. It looks too naked, and I guess I haven’t recovered from its uselessness in other games.
10: Sleep. I mean, it does heal, but so does food.
9: Ice. Very underwhelming, takes too long to deal damage, and I didn’t discover it could glide over lava and mud until I upgraded it.
8: Bomb. The hat looks so awkward, and it’s a little lacking for damage.
7: Tornado. Does little damage and is kinda hard to control.
6: Cutter. Vastly improved over other games, but mostly here because I like the other ones more.
5: Sword. Classic, but it gets so much better. It’s kinda basic right now, so I usually opted for other abilities.
4: Drill. Once I learned about the circle thing, I was abusing undergroundness for bosses like nobody’s business.
3: Fire. I wish it had an aerial attack, but it’s just fun.
2: Ranger. Gun is funni, but it’s not quite as satisfying to use as its evolutions.
1: Hammer. whack. What can I say
    2nd tier:
12: Pencil Drill. It feels so weak! Have you ever tried to stab something with a pencil?
11: Toy Hammer. It’s supposed to be powerful, and it just doesn’t feel like it.
10: Frosty Ice. Yeah, it’s cute, but it’s just disappointing. Those Frosty snowmen just clutter up the screen.
9: Volcano Fire. It’s just mid. I never used it when I could avoid it.
8: Gigant Sword. Slow, can’t roll, just not my thing.
7: Fleur Tornado. Felt weak, and still hard to control. Looks good, though.
6: Clutter Needle. Honestly, I’m surprised how high up this is. I didn’t use it much, but it was inoffensive when I did.
5: Chakram Cutter. Wonderful chaos, and it’ll only go up from here.
4: Chain Bomb. DAMAGE. So much better than regular bomb.
3: Noble Ranger. Guns got good and me like. Was my go to before I had tier 3.
2: Deep Sleep. he. has. a. bed. It’s adorable. Also, he doesn’t immediately fall asleep, heals to full, and gets buffs. Nice!
1: Time Crash. Definitely the most satisfying one to use, and he’s wearing a top hat. I love steampunk top hats. This is catering to me.
    Tier 3 (and 4)
12: Wild Hammer. Slow, and didn’t do enough damage to make up for it.
11: Homing Bomb. Great for staying far away and focusing on dodging, but makes boss fights long and tedious. Also, the moving bombs make the chain break so easily.
10: Crystal Needle. Definitely the best Needle, but I didn’t use it too much because there were just better abilities.
9: Meta Knight Sword. I KNOW, I know. It’s down here because the fact that it has crescent beams when at full heart makes me place an unreasonable emphasis on staying at full health, and I’m just sad when I can’t camp with it.
8: Space Ranger. Great ability, but the aiming is slow. Mostly just here because I like all the other stuff.
7: Storm Tornado. Felt powerful, and by this point in the game I’d learned to control it. Great ability.
6: Buzz Saw Cutter. Definitely felt powerful. The screen pause when it ricochets is amazing. I just didn’t use it much.
5: Dragon Fire. First tier 3, so it has a special place in my heart. I love burning enemies alive and then it still doing damage after you have to stop actively breathing fire on them. And the flying? Amazing.
4: Twin Drill. Used it for so many bosses. It felt powerful, and the only real downside is there are places in the game where it’s practically useless because of metal.
3: Dedede Hammer. It’s DUAL WIELDING HAMMERS. There is nothing cooler than that, full stop. Definitely felt the most powerful of any ability, and does actually disgusting damage. What did I expect from a tier 4 though? It’s so much better than Wild Hammer, and the fire tornados are a great touch.
2: Blizzard Ice. You might be surprised to see this so high up on the list. The reason it’s here is because it’s what I used to beat Morpho Knight. I was holding R like nobody’s business. I understand why other people don’t like it, but I am a huge fan of being a fricking tank and just *existing* during a huge, powerful attack, and then being right close by to get in a freeze. Felt great, loved the block so much that I didn’t even notice it couldn’t dodge roll until after I’d 100%ed the game.
1: Morpho Knight Sword. What else could be here? It’s the perfect ability. Crescent beams at full health? Check. Two completely unique attacks with inputs exclusive to this ability? Check (that Fecto Forgo ghost attack is great for camping, btw). Perfect mixture of regular Sword and Gigant Sword? Check. Unreasonable damage output? Check. Fricking teleportation? Check. LIFESTEAL? WHY NOT? This ability is absurd and overpowered and I love it. And somehow I still managed to lose to Chaos Elfilis twice. It even looks great (Morpho Knight has the best design of any of the Knights (Meta, Dark Meta, Galacta, etc.), I’ll fight you). And to top it all off, I didn’t play Star Allies, so I’m not traumatized from Morpho Knight’s first appearance-I have the benefit of only hearing his FL theme, which is a fricking banger. Great fight, great ability, great game, and I’m done.
Edit: I lied. The place I learned mixing was in this game was The Beast Pack’s Final Stand. I inhaled a tornado guy and a needle hedgehog (don’t know their names, ik, I’m ashamed) and got…Time Crash. Amazing.

Honestly, Meta Knight Sword is my favorite ability in the game. Yes, even above the Tier 4 abilities, including Meta Knight Sword's own upgrade. Morpho Knight Sword is just... not fun for me. The teleport dodge removes the fun from dodging by making it comedically easy, the lifesteal makes it so you don't have to worry about taking minor hits because you can just heal them off, and the massive charge attack negates the difficulty of dealing damage. Put it all together, and you get an ability that plays like "dodge everything effortlessly and wait for the boss to get stunned so you can hit them with your Large Angry Bonk Sword and instantly win". It feels like Archer all over again. I just don't enjoy it. Meanwhile, Meta Knight Sword has Final Caliber, a powerful multi-hitting attack that can utterly shred bosses. The hitstun of the attack lets you get the whole thing out if you connect it, and being able to drift while doing it lets you leave the attack in interesting ways. However, do it at the wrong time, and you'll just get bonked as soon as you finish the attack. It creates an interesting feedback loop. Wait for an attack, perfect-dodge it and move in, Final Caliber, and retreat. Dodge, then counter. It's thrillingly fun. Plus, Final Caliber's damage-to-speed ratio is ridiculous. A damage-buffed, fully-upgraded Meta Knight Sword can kill Phantom Sillydillo before he gets a single attack out, which feels awesome to pull off. It's precise, and it's difficult, but if you can use it to its fullest potential, it becomes a force to be reckoned with. Meta Knight Sword supremacy!

Really enjoyed the review. Though I'm surprised you found this arena to be easier without abilities than planet robobot since in that most bosses are easily doable without taking damage since they follow basically the same pattern every attempt. Even the final boss is basically free until the heart phase if you memorize exactly where to go at what time. Though I did set limitations (such as not sucking up the orbs around chaos elfilis) to myself in both arenas which definitely mattered more in ultimate cup z, so that might've also made it harder for me, but also most of the bosses seemed to be less predictable and have far more changing patterns in ultimate cup z.
Though if you want a challenge try to do the ultimate cup z with level 1 sword without power boost/ buying items/ paying to retry. That was at least for me the hardest challenge I've done in any nintendo game.

Honestly, it's mostly because dodging is so OP in this game. EVERY boss is free if you know how to dodge properly.

    • @somethin7020
      @somethin7020 Рік тому

@@sinteleon I didn't notice this comment earlier so this is kind of a late reply, but I don't entirely agree. While dodging is pretty OP and trivializes some attacks there's plenty of bosses that don't become free unless you use a really powerful ability (which in this game using no abilities is actually very powerful). I tried every arena with the basic sword power in every game starting from triple deluxe. Both triple deluxe and planet robobot i beat on my first try with basically a full hp bar left, while both soul melter ex and ultimate cup z took me nearly 10 hours to beat. I'd hardly call that free compared to triple deluxe and planet robobot.

51:50 This retry system was very much needed. The flaw of the True Arena type modes was especially apparent to me in Star Allies as your made to fight bosses you haven't seen before and you only have one chance per try to learn their moveset before being sent 10/15/20 mins back to the start of the mode. I appreciate this retry system very much. And for those with pride who don't wanna use it, the choice is all up to you, so everyone wins

"can't wait until the next kirby game is set in an active warzone"
ok but hear me out- 2 Interplanetary forces with some obscure rivalry clash, Pop Star becomes their battleground, kirby and co trying to break it up and keep their land in tact. Could involve fun double fights with bosses, fighting enemies from both sides at once, return the arena similar to Forgotten Land's, and drop a Meta Knight+Dedede tag team fight to fit the rest of the games bosses as a side-boss to test Kirby's skill to stop the ongoing war.

The last Tornado it's really good even without the usual invulnerability.
If you cancel the attack after suck some enemies or objects, they will fly like homing missiles to the nearby enemies. This applies to the stars for bosses. Also when you stop the spin, the attack finish with a AoE that not appear if you simple wait the end of the spin.

i want to give special props to morpho knights theme in this game, for not only being a great remix on the original theme but for having a seamless transition from that to the main theme. Every pseudo final boss theme generally has an "oh shit" feeling. That's certainly an accurate reaction to have, but this one in particular, despite the fact it's not the true final boss nor is it the most complex theme in the game, makes it feel like you ARE fighting a final boss. i hope future themes of alike bosses are like this.

I just thought about this now - Forgotten Land's setting is the inverse of Planet Robobot's! It consists of nature overtaking civilization, rather than civilization overtaking nature. You see almost every structure being overgrown with lush greenery (except for the desert and volcano areas, obviously) and even flowers are blooming in many places. In fact, it's almost a constant struggle for us to maintain our gray, stolid cities, as nature is constantly working to wear it down in one fashion or another.
It reminds me that if all humans were to disappear from the world right now, the forces of nature would obliterate all traces of our existence and find equilibrium again in about ten thousand years, which is the evolutionary and geological blink of an eye. It would not be the equilibrium it had before, but it would be a balance. And I honestly find that rather comforting.
