    I titled this a "FIRST LOOK" instead of the usual "review" After watching back the footage, I just didn't do a proper review... this trail was just so technical I could never get into a rhythm in terms of talking about the bike... The trail was so demanding I had to stay focused and not talk as much... I will be riding this bike again soon. Needless to say, the Mach 6 is one of my very favorite bikes I've ridden this year. I was planning on purchasing the Mach 6 or Ibis HD4 to replace my Santa Cruz Nomad... this Mach 6 is incredible!!!

      Maybe because you were thrown into the fire with an unfamiliar bike, speaks volumes for its capabilities!Love your vids, and have come to really value your reviews and opinions.

      Mitch Moe, thank you for the support! Love the Mach 6 but this trail.... eashhhh. Wish you guys could watch the footage unedited... I was getting super frustrated with this never ending trail of death...

    Great vid! Came over from BKXC. I have a 2016 M6 and was considering updating to the 2018, been waiting for a chance to test ride. Your review just confirmed I need to go jump on one! Also watched your review on the Wreckoning, how do they compare? Keep up the good work!

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 років тому +2

      Welcome, glad you made it over here! Dude, go ride the new Mach 6 asap! You won't be disappointed! I almost bought the M6 after this day of riding it... ended up with the Ibis HD4 instead but safe to say, these are my two favorite 27.5 wheel sized bikes I've ridden this year! The Wrecker is a completely different experience so it's difficult to compare the two... they just do things differently. The M6 climbs better then the Wreck but deciding on a long travel 29er will make easy work out of just about any trail... it's ridiculous. I had a lot of fun on the Wreckoning but for me, long travel bikes are 27.5 all day, every day! I know the 29ers are fast, hold speed and roller over.... but, I have more fun on long travel 27.5 bikes. I should mention, I'm on the short side at 5'8"... I have a short travel 29er also! Enjoy, thanks for commenting and stick around and share in any way you feel comfortable. Lot of good information here so please feel free to add to it!

    • @FULLmontyAC
      @FULLmontyAC 6 років тому +1

      MTB yumyum thanks! I'm right there with ya only 5'10" and also have a short travel 29er. I'm guessing I probably agree with your sentiment on the long travel 29 vs 27.5 but I have not got on a 29 LT yet. Thanks for all the info and I agree lots of good info!

    I demo'd that bike as well before settling on the SB5. It is absolutely awesome and so good on the descents. Patiently waiting for that review to see what you think and if it aligned with what I though. My decision was really between the Mach 6 and the SB5 and what sold me was the climbing ability of the SB5. I thought it was a better climber and could get just as rowdy descending. I'm curious what your thoughts are between the two as well.

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 років тому +1

      Interesting. Glad you found your bike dude! Everyone has their own bike out there... that's fits them, their terrain or riding style best. This Mach 6 is easily one of the best bikes I've ridden this year. I would say in the Yeti line-up, the SB6 is a better comparison to this Mach 6. The SB5 is a more playful and snappy bike... I'll try and get it uploaded in the next few weeks!

  • @johnnnewmex
    @johnnnewmex 6 років тому +2

    C'mon...you're in Moab and you mention Jacob's ladder???!! Moab is the prime place to test the kinds of bikes you ride. That Mach 6 is meant to eat up that type of terrain. Seeing a 160mm bike fly down a flow trail is like watching a Ford Raptor ride down the interstate. Thanks for posting the review on its intended terrain!

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 років тому +2

      hahaha calling me out! That's awesome. Yeah, honestly I need to get out and ride more places. Moab and St George are about 3 hours drive, American Fork Canyon, Park City/Canyons/Deer Valley are all with 45 minutes drive... The Mach 6 was rad! Trail was incredible with lots of tough terrain and the bike was right in it's element! Thanks for the comment and hope you stick around for future videos!

  • @Mountain_Town_Dave

    MTB yumyum, what where the reasons you choose the HD4 over the Mach 6?

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 років тому +1

      I could have gone either way because they were both just so good... easily my two favorite bikes so far! This may sound odd but I liked the color more on the HD4, wanted to try the new 2.6 tire trend and honestly, I asked for a discount from both bike shops and got a little better deal on the Ibis... Again, these have been my two favorite bikes so far and I've been super happy with the HD4 and really glad I got the bike with the 2.6 tires... it's been a lot of fun and feel like I'm a better rider after having ridden this HD4 more than 300 miles already!

    Whoa! Nice riding. Dang it, I bought the switchblade and ride it in 29er with the headset cup still in, I love it. However, that mach 6, hummm, wish I through a leg over that one before I bought.

    Nice ride and a great impressions of that bike. I tend to believe that a trail like this shows a lot how capable a bike is. Especially with lots of technical climbing in between.

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 років тому +1

      That's true for sure! I would liked to have had more time on the bike at higher speeds... over 25 mph to get a better idea of the stability... bike felt rad and just did everything well!

    Hey. I had a look on that vid as at some point I am going to build me an Allmountain/Not-RaceEnduro as backup for my thunderbolt 2019 for the harder trips. How would you compare that bike to the Altitude? Head Angle is less aggressive though it should be more of an Enduro as the altitude. And how about DW compared to Smoothlink. My VPP similar experiences were not that good due to high pedal kickback, while the Smoothlink is more active but gets deep in the travel/uncomfortable on climbs for the altitude (while brilliant on the thunderbolt). I really like the idea of building a pivot from this with airshock but mrp ribbon coil fork... And the frame is affordable for a pivot

    How does it compare to the Firebird? Huge difference in ride feel? 🤔

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 років тому

      Great question... When I first rode the Firebird over a year ago I fell in love with it! Incredible bike but I just couldn't justify it... I didn't need a bike that big. Well, the Mach 6 does everything the firebird does only I think it's more nimble and climbs better. If you're smashing park days all year get the Firebird... but if this is your only bike or just ride park on occasion, this bike will blow your mind! The and the Ibis HD4 are my top 2 bikes of the year!

      I'm about to that point myself... I rode today but there was a dusting of snow on the trails... I leave my bikes inside the house. I'm always afraid I'll forget to close the garage one night and wake up to my bikes missing. So, inside the house they stay!

    I guess you would have liked the 5.5 as well if it came with a pair 2.3 DHFs. It comes alive with narrower rubber.

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 років тому

      Yeah, that might have been the case... hard to say without giving it a try... I like the HD4 with 2.6 tires...

    • @cosmicheretic8129
      @cosmicheretic8129 6 років тому

      I was wondering that when I demoed it. Not a fan of 2.6's...felt muted and squirmy in the corners. The SB I demoed was better I'm almost certain because of the narrower tires.

    • @stephanchilla8965
      @stephanchilla8965 6 років тому +1

      Shane Kweens I guess it comes down to riding conditions and personal preferences. My trails here in Germany are as far from Moab as possible: due to permanent rain its almost always wet and muddy, i.e. not the place for 2.6s to shine. But my best riding buddy still prefers his Fatbike where I love my Shorty/DHF 2.3 combo on the 5.5...

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 років тому +2

      Totally.... I get asked all the time how I'm able to talk so well while riding... well, goes to show how well I know my trail system that I usually review bikes on including how flow trails are compared with this incredible amount of tech. Fun though... just wasn't sure what I was getting myself into. I love tech trails but probably not best for reviewing a bike. Some higher speed stuff would have been nice!

    You mention below that your favorite 27.5 bikes of the year are the M6 adn the HD4, and your two favorite 29ers are the Rocky Mountain Instinct and the SC HT/LT. Do you have a review in the queue for the RM instinct? I really enjoy your work and trust your reviews. Thanks!

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 років тому

      Yes, I'll be uploading the Instinct video soon... I don't have a schedule per say, but it should be in the next 3-5 weeks! I demo'd it about a month ago and it is without a doubt the best climbing 140mm 29er bike out there... I felt the same way about the Altitude... These Rocky Mountains just climb so well.

    That would be the kind of trail you'd buy that kind of travel for. There's very few trails I see the need to go beyond my 2018 Tallboys travel. Reminds me a lot of my two closest trails. Rocks and more rocks! I almost would prefer more bottom bracket clearance than any other attribute in very rock terrain.

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 років тому

      Honestly, this is one of the most technical trails I've ever ridden... it just didn't stop. up, down, up, down... square edge after square edge... tough riding for sure! There are a lot more "fun" trails out there... This was my first time on deadmans, longbranch and killer bees... killer bees was awesome though!

      Moab has every level of riding. One thing that is different though if you don't normally live in the desert is that there are few trees (shade) and you are often on rock surfaces rather than dirt. It is a wonderful place to ride with unique scenery and extensive well-marked trails.

    I’ve been told the Firebird climbs well enough that giving up the travel for the Mach 6 isn’t worth it. Thoughts? Also, I’m currently torn between the HTLT and the Firebird/Mach 6 as a one bike owner. We ride mostly big climbs and rowdy descents (priority) in the PNW. How much downhill love will I miss going with the HTLT? Cheers

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 років тому +1

      You wont miss too much "downhill love" going with the LT... it's an excellent do everything 29er. I'd say pick a wheel size. So, to make your decision more complicated, I liked the Mach 6 better than the Firebird for a trail bike and I like the Firebird and Mach 6 better than the Hightower LT overall but... BUT!... If I could only have one bike, I'd have to be a 29er... so :) Hope that helps! If it were me and I could only have one bike, it would be either an Ibis Ripley or Rocky Mountain Instinct just depending on how much travel I really thought I needed for the trails/terrain I ride most often. Good luck!

      Thanks for the feedback. I checked out the Instinct BC this week, it would have been my 1st choice of 29ers. I’ve decided my riding style and size best fits a 27. We ride steep, tight, rugged trails, not much XC, so I’m looking for more travel. Going with the Firebird! Looking forward to your reviews of future long travel 29ers. Seems like they’re evolving like the 27’s have, more travel, yet better climbing and handling. Should be a big crop over the next year or two. Cheers!

    Wow what a great video Jay. Really good perspective on what you were feeling out there. I was surprised you could talk as much as you did. That was epic rough. My 2014 Mach 6 is still one of the best bikes I’ve ridden so I can only imagine what the new one is like. And to think you like the HD4 even better!

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 років тому +2

      Dean, this was some rugged terrain for sure! Yeah... I went with the HD4 but honestly I could have gone either way... where it was so close it really came down to the little stuff like, the fit was a little better on the HD4 with a slightly shorter reach and I went with a size Medium and 40mm stem. Also liked the color just a bit better... my Nomad was black and I sorted wanted a bright bike.. the blue on this Mach 6 was about the same as the Switchblade (if not the exact paint code) so I wanted something different and the Fireball red HD4..... theres just nothing like it! Last of all, I sort of wanted to try out this latest crop of 2.6 larger "standard" tires... also, you can get the HD4 with an X2.... I was sold! These bikes are so similar it's crazy. I feel like they climb better than any other bikes in the category... I put them in the same category as the new Nomad and Firebird... they're just about as capable on the down hill but overall better trail bikes in my opinion. Also, slightly slacker hta on the Ibis. That was long... sorry!

      thanks for the comment, your comments are as good as the videos. Thanks for taking the time to respond to people. I've been torn between the mach 6 and hd4 myself. I think I'm leaning towards the hd4 for the same reasons, x2, reach and fit, wide tire (some like it, some Don't) . I think the 160 mm post mount is an advantage for the hd4, Its hard to get a fox transfer down all the way on the mach 6 . I don't care for the high rollers that come on the mach 6. The spec is perfect on the hd4 imho. eagle, fox transfer -no reverb!, xt brakes. The red, and silver lime are awesome. My only question is, did you spring for the 742 carbon wheels?

    How does the Mach 6 compare to the Firebird? I had the first version Mach 6 then got a new Firebird. Had the Firebird 15 months. Looking at possible going back to the Mach 6 as my do everything bike. Any feedback would help.

      The Mach 6 and the Ibis HD4 are my two favorite bikes I've ever ridden. I also really loved the Firebird but the trail manners are a little better on the Mach 6. Between the current Mach 6 and Firebird, I'd go Mach 6. I'd also try and demo the Ibis HD4... both incredible bikes and I'd be happy with either. I ended up buying the HD4 good luck!

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 років тому +1

      Honestly, I felt like they climbed equally well. I wouldn't say one's better than the other... I got along better with the M6! Super fun bike that just did everything better than I though it would.

    • @johnk7390
      @johnk7390 6 років тому +1

      Excellent video! You have some Mad-Skillz. I can't believe how you handled that trail. Was in Moab in Sept for the first time. Some of those trails are real eye-openers. Took my 2016 - Mach 6. It was a lot of fun.
      However I am seriously considering selling my M6 as Geo has never worked for me. I'm 5'10" with just under 34" inseam and have always felt it was a little too short. Was seriously considering the 5.5 (like the new Geo), but still not sure. Watched your test ride on it and it appeared you liked it a lot. However you seem to like it less after the M6. Can you elaborate a little on why? Your input would be appreciated.

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 років тому +8

      Yeah, it would be best to demo both if you've narrowed it down to just these two bikes... The Mach 5.5 is a great bike but these are my gripes. They've built it to feel and act like a big bike but it's not. It doesn't have that snappy poppy feel that you'd think a 140mm bike would have. The Bronson is more poppy than the M5.5 I think they list the Mach 5.5 on the Pivot website under the XC/Trail bikes category... I honestly can't think of a single person on this planet that would want the M5.5 as a XC bike... seriously, it's laughable. If you want a bike that feels almost like a Firebird but with slightly better trail manners skip the 5.5 and get the M6. It climbs better than the Firebird and about the same as the M5.5... maybe better?! If it's a lively fun poppy mid travel 27.5 bike you're after look to the Santa Cruz 5010 or the Ibis Mojo 3... The Mach 5.5 is cool looking and a nice bike but who would buy it?! Sorry.... rant over... that was bad sorry. Not deleting it though...

    Hi. Nice review! I am looking at a firebird, but have started looking at a Mach 6 as well. I do have quite rought trails in my backyard that would suit the firebird perfectly. • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 років тому

      Honestly, I think that Mach 6 is just about the perfect long travel bike! Depends if you can have two mountain bikes at a time? If you can only have one mountain bike at a time, go with the Mach 6... it is more "trail" friendly....

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 років тому

      Interesting you would ask... I was torn between the two bikes. I've been looking for a longer travel 27.5 bike and had settled in on the M6 or HD4. I ended up buying the HD4 in Fireball Red. (follow me on Instagram as my UA-cam is a good 2 months behind real life)
      Why I went with the HD4... You can get it with the Fox Float X2 stock, It has a slightly shorter reach than the M6, I'm 5'8" on a Medium with a 40mm stem, I love the Red Ibis paint job and wanted to try a bike with the new 2.6 standard tires... so, that's it! Could have gone either way. I knew I wanted DW link, long travel, water bottle in the triangle after that's it was just a matter of finding a bike with total stability and high speed confidence with the most amount of lively, poppy feel to it.... That was the list and the HD4 and Mach 6 were the top choices for me. HD4 is incredible... The M6 is a very close second place for me! Hope that helps!
