The Disheartening Downfall of H3H3 Productions

- Ethan and Hila (H3H3 productions and H3 Podcast) - Everyones, (at one point at least) favourite UA-cam couple. Two of the greatest content creators to ever hit the platform, who have had their reputation tarnished over the years. But the real question - Has their downfall been justified? And what could have caused such a downfall? Was it the change in their personality, from a chilled out couple to an angry, bitter pair of creators? Was it all owed to the H3 Podcast? Has their extreme rise in status caused an arrogant personality? This is, The rise and fall, of H3H3 Productions (H3 Podcast / Ethan and Hila).

Ethan literally became one of the people he would make fun of
yup
he's got a wife, a healthy baby, and is making a shit ton of money off youtube and their clothing line. who care.
@@samoflegend738 Obviously, Ethan does, and it shows. He's very insecure.
@@samoflegend738 You do apparently. You saw his comment didn't like it and got flamed enough to list off things Ethan's done like that means anything to anyone but you. OP's statement is still true.
@@samoflegend738 but he doesn't look healthy
Heila doesn't seem even to enjoy it. She just sits there, sometimes saying "yeah", but overall feeling like she just kinda zones out whenever Ethan goes on another one of his rants
It's like the chick gets mogadon injected into neck every morning..she's not even in the room..😵💫
I also don’t know why they put on the show. She is sweet and gentle person, put she never has any interesting inputs or insights to the discussions
She has that dead-eyed Kardashian vibe. Pretty creepy and a little psychopathic looking tbh
She seems like a genuine person which makes all her comments on point. Ethan is constantly trying to hype her up and to push her to open up which is also a sweet thing to look at. Her takes are few but she can as well make solid points even though I'd agree that her introvert behavior is not as entertaining as Ethan's.
They make a perfectly ballanced team in the end in my opinion.
Ethan's insecurity and bitterness is the only thing that pushed me away from their channel.
She doesn't seem to like it anymore, but her original appreances were a HUGE deal. She used to be insanely shy to be on camera, and eventually would be on it, but would hardly talk.
Eventually she began to open up thanks to Ethan hyping her up so damn much.
But on the podcast and the longer it went on, she appeared to be less than thrilled about a LOT of the takes Ethan had. And felt like she just no longer wanted to be apart of the podcast. She, clearly, loves Ethan with all her heart and soul, but doesn't enjoy what type of person he has become.
Or maybe she is reverting back to her old self that doesn't like the camera or anything to do with being in front of it.
“You were supposed to destroy the sith, not join them” that one always hits hard.
Imagine being that jealous of a person online..
@@j22563Are you talking about Ethan? If not you're nuts lol

The thing that made me like Ethan in the past was the fact that he didn't take himself seriously. The boy band skit was the funniest Ethan has ever pulled off all because he got nostalgic over a 90's boy band.

I don't think jealousy/disapproval of wealth is the reason behind H3H3's decline, but rather the attitude change that occasionally comes with it. A lot of formerly famous UA-camrs rose in popularity as a result of their humility, authenticity and relatability, and at some point they evidently developed an ego that would become so inflated that they became unable to, or indifferent towards hiding from their viewers.
I don’t think it’s Hila who changed. When Ethan goes on a rant you can tell how uncomfortable she is.
She doesn't even talk as much as he do...like why is it considered a two man job when all Ethan do is talk 90% of the time
Her inputs/contributions have the same substance as a TV guide
She always looks like that. It's hard to pull anything from it
Ethan is one of the worst interviewers on UA-cam and the internet in general.
I don't think it's a good idea to think that you can understand anyone from videos they upload to the internet. Acting like you know and understand them is part of the problem.
ethan is a perfect example of a normal person transitioning to a chronically online person. it’s easy to become a pessimist and bitter person when you’re online 25/8. i pray he finds his peace
I 100% agree. I think it’d be wise for him to take a step back. Just reflect. Now he’s had Bruce and he keeps bringing up the fact he could have left for longer to be on paternity leave. He could have and he should have. And now it’s being shoved in supporters face that he’s staying. Any good fan should want him to leave for a bit. I think it’s becoming unhealthy for him.
Hila even has a term for it: vlogitis.

What made me stop watching H3 was the realization that Ethan’s negativity was literally making my days worse off. His cynical perspective and nasty take on everything was rubbing off on me and just all around making me suck to be around whenever I had just listened to their podcast. So it was an easy choice. Super toxic energy. No place in your life if you want to support positivity and happiness.
Thats facts
Hell yeah man, there is so much shit in the world, just quit anything that makes you unhappy
He was negative about everything...except Apartheid Israel. Total shill for human rights violations.
Foreal, I’ve always come to UA-cam for an escape from reality and the world but instead he became political and bringing up the negatives in life.
It was smart of you to remove that from your life when you recognized what it was doing for you. I personally felt like this after watching Hasan Piker for like a month and cutting him out made me feel a million times better.
H3H3 is a good example of how a format change can ruin a creator. When they were making edited and curated content, even as a reaction channel, they had the time to do research, get a full picture, and spend time on topics.
Today H3H3, and Ethan in particular, have put content frequency and persistence over everything. This has resulted in a complete flip, there is no nuance, no intelligence, heck no research anymore. The end result is H3H3, as creators, are defined by lazy takes, trend chasing, and toxic behavior. Which is depressing when you consider just 5-6 years ago, they were debateably the face of the small creator on UA-cam. Standing up for fair use, calling out bullshit... But now, let's be honest, they are Keemstar in every way except the name.
They've gone from a creator I felt embodied the best aspects of UA-cam to assholes that I wish would stop. What's even worse is they are basically beyond redemption. As a community, we were apologized to three times and the best that has come out of it is a few months of change before they go even deeper into their hole. It was one step forward, wait 3-6 months, 5 steps back for 3-ish years.
At keemstar was always shit and nv tried to hide how horrible he is. I have some respect for that
They’ve found an audience that loves them now
@@user-ci6hi5qx7w IDK if I'd say "love," but they have found an audience.
I recently discovered H3 a few months into the writer's strike, due to the majority of studio produced content being put on hold. I wasn't won over immediately, but I did eventually become a fan, and have been voraciously consuming their back catalogue over the last six weeks.
Even as a fan, I can appreciate this nuanced commentary on the show, and agree fully with your assessment of their "frequency over substance" show style.
While I enjoy their more produced and planned segments, I find it unfortunate that the majority of their content solely relies on Ethan rambling about stuff. Often, he doesn't even take the time to properly understand the timeline or context of events, before he starts rambling on with his hot takes. It's painfully obvious when he hasn't properly previewed the media content prepared for him by his staff, and he's consistently unable to play a video for longer than 6secs without interjection. Honestly, he can't even be bothered to slow down enough to enunciate; properly pronouncing names just normal everyday words, is entirely too much for him. At first, I chalked this up to some sort of reading/speech disorder, but it's not nearly as prominent in the early days of H3 compared to the later pods. It's getting markedly worse, as if the content is getting SO LAZY, basic enunciation is too much effort.
The consent lean on forced drama, while entertaining in small doses, is an obvious crutch. It definitely lends itself to toxicity, and generally, the fixation becomes tedious.
I think they'd put out a remarkably improved product if they cut the show down to once, maybe twice, weekly. I can't believe people actually pay for the member's only streams, which is solely just Ethan rambling without even the crew involvement for added entertainment.
Keemstar > H3H3

That's just how it is when there's a new generation and a new way of thinking and doing things and it seems they can't handle being left in the past so they keep getting into trouble with what they say.
Never...ever...ever...apologize. Simple as that.
In the case of ethan, I would agree with that. Sometimes, there are UA-camrs who's very nature would make apologizing seem dumb, UA-camrs who are just meant to be brash and out there, no matter how offensive they are. Sometimes, there are UA-camrs who try to not be so harsh, and when they screw up, they have to apologize for that because, again, their nature is to be kind, when they aren't kind, they have to make up for that. But Ethan wasn't one of those youtubers, he was going to be brash and rude and if you weren't into that content style, just stay away from him. Sure, he could have some opinions that would be deemed as offensive and politically incorrect, but that was the point, he's just a guy saying what's on his mind. People trying to force him to apologize is pathetic.
For me the golden era of h3h3 was between 2015-2017. Ethan and Hila were more or less playing fast and loose with absurdism and satire and there was such a cool, fun unpredictability factor to their content. Moving from the YT video format to the podcast was a mistake (among many) - there was a notable tonal shift in Ethan - more crotchety and cynical, less fun - and I think that’s when I stopped tuning in.
definitely don't think it was a mistake to make the podcast, considering he's gained more fans and views. people grow and change, not a bad thing. plus he didn't like the incels his old channel was attracting. sometimes you need to branch out with new, different content and that's obviously working out pretty well for him
@@itsjustamyj Totally agree. It’s unreasonable and unrealistic for people to not evolve and change over time, especially on these platforms. He is now earning extreme amounts of wealth. He has also made a (mobile?) game and advertised it on his channel. His content has changed dramatically. He has made mistakes and has genuinely apologized and worked on making himself better for his fans.
He is still loved.
Pewdiepie is the example to follow.
And Jacksepticeye as well (could never watch his earlier stuff but the more successful hes gotten the more i like his content).
Vape nation, the scooter people stuff, and watching ethan lose it to a guy pinching his nuts were my favorite h3 memories.
The rise of Hila Klein’s Teddy Fresh brand is the obvious missing piece here. They didn’t want to tarnish such a cash cow brand with controversial youtube/internet dramas. This is what they don’t want you to know... That brand is so big it reaches children who don’t even know who h3h3 is...
Also having a kid and him on anti depressants

"There's no shortcut to having wealth"
So many rich people got there with shortcuts.
His whole intro monologue is mindblowingly dumb. "There's no shortcut to having wealth... therefore making it one of the only real indicators of an individual's ability to perform better than anyone else". Every piece of this sentence is wrong.
Followed up with: "Government policy, public protests, and more recently, youtube videos all of which follow a similar toxic narrative" - Government policy's been cutting taxes on the rich & businesses for the past like 6 presidents. And absolutely losing my mind by him citing "youtube videos" as like a huge third facet in society.
"The hatred of those with the ability to accumulate wealth" - No, people hate billionaires that are paying workers such small wages they have to rely on foodstamps to survive, while raking in massive profits.

Frenemies was actually a fresh air for H3. It gave ethan a spot to play the sane man (to counter balance trisha who was the mad man) and putting him back on track of being funny without exaggerating himself. Too bad there was too much drama happening the show just ended.
& now he tries to keep the show going with different drama, he saw what brought in the views
That's when I stopped watching, actually. Capitalizing on the drama created by someone who is clearly mentally ill is disgusting.
I loved that show, I felt like it was doing both of them a lot of good. Too bad the drama took over.
I watched every episode of frenemies. I noticed that near the end of frenemies, trisha actually rubbed off on ethan. I stopped watching his shit shortly after frenemys when ethan started calling everybody pedophiles and talking about "SA" constantly. It just isnt fun to watch anymore. To be honest, Ethan has always been an insecure guy. That’s not a dig to him, I love Ethan. But his care free attitude wasn’t because of his inner security
That is true for virtually every person on the planet. Everyone has some kind of insecurities. That care free attitude was during 2014-16 era when being an edgelord was cool and trendy, which gave rise to wannabe cool braindead incels like leafy and actually cool incels like filthyfrank, idubbbz etc. And while some content creators from that era matured up, some never moved on from that phase, just like a lot of commentors here.
You grow up, you have a life, you have kids. And that changes you a lot. And when you have a talk show for several hours in a week you're bound to say some stupid shit every now and then. No one's perfect. Everyone has said or done things that they are not proud of.
You can meet someone and say they are is the nicest person you've ever met. You live with them as a roommate for 5 years and you will definitely find a lot of flaws in them. and that is natural because the longer you know someone the more you know about their personality.

For me as a hardcore H3 watcher since 2015 (and dying off in 2017), his ‘meeting DJ Khaled’ video was where I got my first hit of over the top arrogance from him. At one point he says something like “you’ve never heard of us? We’ve got a few million subscribers on youtube”, and seemed to genuinely feel offended that Khaled didn’t know who he was.
Then he starts hanging with Post Malone (who i love but it felt his chainsmoking and drinking on lazy uploads were almost flaunting and taking his newfound fame for granted rather than being astounded he was around stars like that), starts that podcast where he shows his impossible ignorance about the world constantly every episode, and his whole semi-joking image about himself being a fatass that’s too lazy to really do anything with himself, really started becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. He posted this video explaining why the main H3 channel was too much of a hassle and too much stress to make videos on and spend so much time making, which is why the podcast and Ethan & Hila channels got more attention (again showing the lazy, low-effort content was more comfortable for him as a person).
And while I stuck around through a couple of his angry drunken, chainsmoking rants on his podcast over topics he surprisingly had almost zero exposure to and knew next to nothing about, consistently- episode for episode showed his vast ignorance- I kept watching because I knew he was a human like all of us and it was hopefully just a phase.
But that arrogance, that “I’m better than you”, that animalistic chasing the dollar mindset, came to a head when he posted that ‘mansion showoff’ video thinly veiled with some pretend self-aware sarcasm on top. That was so over the line that I stopped everything with them. No more subscribing, watching, nothing. Not even on the main channel. Out of principle. He went from an ‘everyman’ to a ‘I’m gonna be real nasty to the butler because I’m better than him’ in less than 2 years. The success went to his head. And I couldn’t take anything about him anymore.
So from a long-time H3 fanboy, that’s the timeline of where it stopped for me.

Love the modern warfare music in the background at around 18:00.
Man I feel like all of these “downfall” UA-camrs have to do with letting their audience get to them, and making poor decisions based on it. It’s good to be active with your audience, but know that a lot of people aren’t going to agree and just keep doing your thing. If you fall off, you fall off, there’s not much to gain from trying to fight back against your community. It’s straightforward and sucks, but there are also many ways to come back without having to fight back.
Coming from a former fan of theirs, it may be true for many others, but with Ethan it's not it - he's just really shit as a human being. People just didn't see this side of him when they only made heavily edited reaction videos, -- seeing a character instead of the person behind it.
However, once they moved on to their podcast, people could see who he really is. The fact that there was nobody to hold him back in since he's the (pretty egotistical and self-righteous) boss made his ego grow even further, while piling up wealth grew the disconnect between him and the audience while also magnifying everything negative about him. Pretty qucikly it became apparent that whatever bullshit Ethan says, everyone on the podcast would nod their heads in agreement, and if not - they'd be ridiculed and pushed into agreement. Soon, nobody would ever disagree with him, which for an egomaniac like him is a huge ego boost in itself.
All of that and more while utterly neglecting the very format that made them rich and famous in the first place, - no wonder his subscribers would get disappointed. So yeah, it's really not about the audience getting to him. It's actually the other way around: him not caring about his audience anymore - because why would he, he's already rich, famous and just built different.
Pewds is an impressive case yet again, Marzia did well to go off record
You have to do content that you love...but they seem to be doing just fine. I know they've been successful I was genuinely shocked to see that video of them in the back yard with their pool...I always thought of them as modest people but that illusion has been shattered: that how is absurdly large. I hate conspicuous wealth overall...give back to your community, don't just feed off of it.
@@iamsatanjr The podcasts that H3H3 produces largely seem empty and time-fillers. "Leftovers" is a very apt title to describe what H3H3 is putting out "fresh" today. It's the remnants of a once great creative endeavor. I sincerely hope they continue to be humbled by their remaining viewers, who hopefully dwindle down. They've been plowing the podcast field for too long without enough new adventures. I cling on as a subscriber because the early stuff was so great...but Ethan and Hila would have to be delusional to think they're producing the same high level of content that they were in 2015. It's just not there.
