  • Ethan and Hila (H3H3 productions and H3 Podcast) - Everyones, (at one point at least) favourite UA-cam couple. Two of the greatest content creators to ever hit the platform, who have had their reputation tarnished over the years. But the real question - Has their downfall been justified? And what could have caused such a downfall? Was it the change in their personality, from a chilled out couple to an angry, bitter pair of creators? Was it all owed to the H3 Podcast? Has their extreme rise in status caused an arrogant personality? This is, The rise and fall, of H3H3 Productions (H3 Podcast / Ethan and Hila).

She seems like a genuine person which makes all her comments on point. Ethan is constantly trying to hype her up and to push her to open up which is also a sweet thing to look at. Her takes are few but she can as well make solid points even though I'd agree that her introvert behavior is not as entertaining as Ethan's.
They make a perfectly ballanced team in the end in my opinion.
Ethan's insecurity and bitterness is the only thing that pushed me away from their channel.

    • @GeekedOutNeckbeard

She doesn't seem to like it anymore, but her original appreances were a HUGE deal. She used to be insanely shy to be on camera, and eventually would be on it, but would hardly talk.
Eventually she began to open up thanks to Ethan hyping her up so damn much.
But on the podcast and the longer it went on, she appeared to be less than thrilled about a LOT of the takes Ethan had. And felt like she just no longer wanted to be apart of the podcast. She, clearly, loves Ethan with all her heart and soul, but doesn't enjoy what type of person he has become.
Or maybe she is reverting back to her old self that doesn't like the camera or anything to do with being in front of it.

I don't think jealousy/disapproval of wealth is the reason behind H3H3's decline, but rather the attitude change that occasionally comes with it. A lot of formerly famous UA-camrs rose in popularity as a result of their humility, authenticity and relatability, and at some point they evidently developed an ego that would become so inflated that they became unable to, or indifferent towards hiding from their viewers.

H3H3 is a good example of how a format change can ruin a creator. When they were making edited and curated content, even as a reaction channel, they had the time to do research, get a full picture, and spend time on topics.
Today H3H3, and Ethan in particular, have put content frequency and persistence over everything. This has resulted in a complete flip, there is no nuance, no intelligence, heck no research anymore. The end result is H3H3, as creators, are defined by lazy takes, trend chasing, and toxic behavior. Which is depressing when you consider just 5-6 years ago, they were debateably the face of the small creator on UA-cam. Standing up for fair use, calling out bullshit... But now, let's be honest, they are Keemstar in every way except the name.
They've gone from a creator I felt embodied the best aspects of UA-cam to assholes that I wish would stop. What's even worse is they are basically beyond redemption. As a community, we were apologized to three times and the best that has come out of it is a few months of change before they go even deeper into their hole. It was one step forward, wait 3-6 months, 5 steps back for 3-ish years.

I recently discovered H3 a few months into the writer's strike, due to the majority of studio produced content being put on hold. I wasn't won over immediately, but I did eventually become a fan, and have been voraciously consuming their back catalogue over the last six weeks.
Even as a fan, I can appreciate this nuanced commentary on the show, and agree fully with your assessment of their "frequency over substance" show style.
While I enjoy their more produced and planned segments, I find it unfortunate that the majority of their content solely relies on Ethan rambling about stuff. Often, he doesn't even take the time to properly understand the timeline or context of events, before he starts rambling on with his hot takes. It's painfully obvious when he hasn't properly previewed the media content prepared for him by his staff, and he's consistently unable to play a video for longer than 6secs without interjection. Honestly, he can't even be bothered to slow down enough to enunciate; properly pronouncing names just normal everyday words, is entirely too much for him. At first, I chalked this up to some sort of reading/speech disorder, but it's not nearly as prominent in the early days of H3 compared to the later pods. It's getting markedly worse, as if the content is getting SO LAZY, basic enunciation is too much effort.
The consent lean on forced drama, while entertaining in small doses, is an obvious crutch. It definitely lends itself to toxicity, and generally, the fixation becomes tedious.
I think they'd put out a remarkably improved product if they cut the show down to once, maybe twice, weekly. I can't believe people actually pay for the member's only streams, which is solely just Ethan rambling without even the crew involvement for added entertainment.

Sometimes, there are UA-camrs who try to not be so harsh, and when they screw up, they have to apologize for that because, again, their nature is to be kind, when they aren't kind, they have to make up for that. But Ethan wasn't one of those youtubers, he was going to be brash and rude and if you weren't into that content style, just stay away from him. That care free attitude was during 2014-16 era when being an edgelord was cool and trendy, which gave rise to wannabe cool braindead incels like leafy and actually cool incels like filthyfrank, idubbbz etc. And while some content creators from that era matured up, some never moved on from that phase, just like a lot of commentors here.
You grow up, you have a life, you have kids. And that changes you a lot. And when you have a talk show for several hours in a week you're bound to say some stupid shit every now and then. No one's perfect. Everyone has said or done things that they are not proud of.
You can meet someone and say they are is the nicest person you've ever met. You live with them as a roommate for 5 years and you will definitely find a lot of flaws in them. and that is natural because the longer you know someone the more you know about their personality.

For me as a hardcore H3 watcher since 2015 (and dying off in 2017), his ‘meeting DJ Khaled’ video was where I got my first hit of over the top arrogance from him. At one point he says something like “you’ve never heard of us? We’ve got a few million subscribers on youtube”, and seemed to genuinely feel offended that Khaled didn’t know who he was.
Then he starts hanging with Post Malone (who i love but it felt his chainsmoking and drinking on lazy uploads were almost flaunting and taking his newfound fame for granted rather than being astounded he was around stars like that), starts that podcast where he shows his impossible ignorance about the world constantly every episode, and his whole semi-joking image about himself being a fatass that’s too lazy to really do anything with himself, really started becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. He posted this video explaining why the main H3 channel was too much of a hassle and too much stress to make videos on and spend so much time making, which is why the podcast and Ethan & Hila channels got more attention (again showing the lazy, low-effort content was more comfortable for him as a person).
And while I stuck around through a couple of his angry drunken, chainsmoking rants on his podcast over topics he surprisingly had almost zero exposure to and knew next to nothing about, consistently- episode for episode showed his vast ignorance- I kept watching because I knew he was a human like all of us and it was hopefully just a phase.
But that arrogance, that “I’m better than you”, that animalistic chasing the dollar mindset, came to a head when he posted that ‘mansion showoff’ video thinly veiled with some pretend self-aware sarcasm on top. That was so over the line that I stopped everything with them. No more subscribing, watching, nothing. Not even on the main channel. Out of principle. He went from an ‘everyman’ to a ‘I’m gonna be real nasty to the butler because I’m better than him’ in less than 2 years. The success went to his head. And I couldn’t take anything about him anymore.
So from a long-time H3 fanboy, that’s the timeline of where it stopped for me.

Coming from a former fan of theirs, it may be true for many others, but with Ethan it's not it - he's just really shit as a human being. People just didn't see this side of him when they only made heavily edited reaction videos, -- seeing a character instead of the person behind it.
However, once they moved on to their podcast, people could see who he really is. The fact that there was nobody to hold him back in since he's the (pretty egotistical and self-righteous) boss made his ego grow even further, while piling up wealth grew the disconnect between him and the audience while also magnifying everything negative about him. Pretty qucikly it became apparent that whatever bullshit Ethan says, everyone on the podcast would nod their heads in agreement, and if not - they'd be ridiculed and pushed into agreement. Soon, nobody would ever disagree with him, which for an egomaniac like him is a huge ego boost in itself.
All of that and more while utterly neglecting the very format that made them rich and famous in the first place, - no wonder his subscribers would get disappointed. So yeah, it's really not about the audience getting to him. It's actually the other way around: him not caring about his audience anymore - because why would he, he's already rich, famous and just built different.

everything i couldn't put in words, you put it here. i loved his videos in the early days, but for like last 2 + years, i felt like nothing he had to say was interesting anymore. and she was pretty much there just a "wtf" face to whatever he had to say. like i am still subbed to both of their channels, but i havent clicked onto their videos for a while even if it popped up on my feed. just like uninteresting, like whatever they have to say is like, meh whatever, i dont need to hear it. lmao

This has always been the flow with UA-camrs. Also, someone needs to tell Ethan he is not Howard Stern, he is such a try hard and condescending person now. Loved it when Bill Burr got under his skin, he can't take anything at all.
